HERE'S SOME KOOKY SHOW RELATED JAZZ

From time to time we get people asking about our theme song. It was performed and crafted by the good folks at songstowearpantsto.com. It's this amazing project where you send them an e-mail and if they like it they will write a song based on it. Some of the e-mails they get are INSANSE but they find the most wonderful solutions to the problems presented. Definitely check it out.

Related to this, here's a website that makes reference to our theme when talking about STWPT. It also links directly to the song, so you can download it and put it on every mix CD ever. Just kidding. But I'm not. Or am I?

Another funny thing is that if you go to askjeeves.com and type in "songs to wear pants to" and "shuffle function" as the search subjects, you get this page that shows the ranking of songs downloaded from STWPT. Check out how friggin' high the theme is ranked. I'm shocked. And stunned. Yeah, shocked and stunned.

I know I keep saying this, but thanks to all of you out there who call and write and especially those of you that pledge your financial support to keep KMSU on the air. If any of you would like to make a New Year's resolution to keep independent radio alive in Southern Minnesota, Shelley and I can certainly point you in the right direction!

Here's to hoping that 2005 is safe and filled with quirky music for you all.

LEGENDARY STARDUST CHRISTMAS

Hey there, kids! Happy Birthday and all the other pimply hyperbole.

Recently Shelley and myself sent our favorite cowpoke The Legendary Stardust Cowboy a birthday card to wish him all around goodness on his big day. In it we told him about how we are thrilled that the KMSU listening area is filled with people that call up and request his music. Have we mentioned lately that you guys rule for that? Because you do.

Anyway, he showed the card to his drummer and the drummer didn't buy it. He's thinks we're lying to our favorite cowboy! It's like I'm trying to convince him that the new William Shatner album is brilliant or something! (It is brilliant, but anyway...)

HERE'S WHAT SHUFFLE FUNCTION WANTS TO DO:

The Ledge has been really good to our show since the early days. He consented to an interview (sort of) for our first anniversary show, and for the last 24 Hour Pledge Drive-a-go-go Marathon he recorded a special introduction to kick things off for us. Beyond that he's given the world some of the craziest mind bending music this side of Lubbock and we spin it like it's going out of style on the show.

Plus Bowie snagged the Stardust from his name for Ziggy. How cool is that?

What we want is to show the drummer that our listeners have kick ass taste in cowboys. What follows is the Legendary Stardust Cowboy's mailing address. If you want to make a genuine wild man of a cowboy happy along with us, send him a holiday card. Tell him he is kick ass and you love his music. Just let him know that we all dig him up here in the great white north.

Here's the stuff:

Norman Odam aka The Legendary Stardust Cowboy
P.O. Box 36305
San Jose, CA 95158

I don't know about getting a reply, as he's busy working on an album right now, but if I were you I'd enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope. With any luck you could get a Legendary Stardust Autograph.

In show related business, don't forget to tune into our Thursday night show on December 23rd @ 6 p.m. We're airing our third annual Wishlist show, where we get folks out in the real world to tell stories about experiences and encounters with rock gods and legends. It is shaping up to be a good one this year, so don't forget to tune in. A splendid time is guaranteed for all.

And write that cowboy!

Shyboy

OH YEAH -

To all the "Program Directors For A Day" folks out there - if you see a mistake in the blog for your playlist, feel free to tell us about it . That way we can change it. Just click on the little "letter" at the bottom of the entry, and jot down the error. Easy as that. And thanks again to all those who have come up to KMSU to share their incredible music collection as well as their enthusiasm for radio. It has been a blast for Tim and I, and an education!!!
And for something completely unrelated, but I just finished watching it for a second time in as many days (this time with commentary by Chuck D of Public Enemy), you must take the time out of your busy holiday schedule to watch WATTSTAX. It recently came out on DVD, and I know Netflix has it. Incredible, Incredible, Incredible. Be on the lookout for Rufus Thomas and the guy with the umbrella, Johnny Taylor's white hot performance of "Jody", and Black Moses himself. I gotta go now, I have to break out my Stax box set and my headphones.

I have seen the face of GOD, and his name is Frank errrr........Charles. Or maybe......Black Francis. I'm so confused.

To my dying day, I will never forget the sight I beheld Thursday night at the Pixies show. THE MAN himself, a mere 6 feet away, towering over us, bathed in purple light and the smoke of a distant fire, and nodding his head rhythmically to the tunes as he strummed his well worn accoustic guitar (so worn, there was a gaping hole where the pick hit the guitar's body). And can he scream, like back in the day?? Heck yeah!!!! And the world is a better place for it.
Wow, this sounds like a goofy love letter. But then I guess it is. I fell in love with the Pixies at first sight, when they opened for U2 in 1988 or so. They were the first band ever to kick me down to the ground with their sound, only to get back up and beg for more. Then they broke up not long afterwards, much like The Talking Heads had. My hopes of ever seeing them play together again were nill, but you guys listen to the show and have probably heard me wax poetic about the reunion, and the Fine Line show in April - so I won't go on and on as I tend to do.
I assume by now you have read Tim's entry about the show, so I will also avoid repetition in that regard as well. Just know that the drum stick is real. I touched it. And finding the pick was a stroke of luck on my part. I think it best if I just rattle off a bunch of things I remember of that night, in no particular order. It's just easier that way.
***** Having met Frank Black on the street outside of First Avenue a couple of years ago, I was convinced that Tim and I would run into him on the streets when we were walking around. So I kept my eyes open for big bald short guys, i.e. Frank Black. I can't begin to tell you how many men walking around downtown fit that description!!! Every one of them caused me to gasp and elbow poor Tim, who inevitably pointed out that it wasn't HIM. And if that wasn't bad enough - at least 75% of the security working the show looked like Frank Black!!! Tim probably has bruises from all the elbowing he got. Sorry Tim.
*****The Pixies are a very business like band. They rip through their set list barely speaking to each other, let alone the audience, so to see as much interaction as we did was awesome. Of course Kim and Dave are the happy go lucky guys, always smiling. Kim is always quick with a thank - you to the audience. I think if they hadn't have goofed up the set list like they did, we would have missed out. So it just goes to show, mistakes are golden.
*****Joey Santiago plays the guitar like no ones business. End of story.
*****The youth of America are also in love with the Pixies, and they showed their love by pushing every one within arms length around. Now, I was right in front so what did I expect. I know. But I mention it because all the pushing and falling down just made me feel old and annoyed. I just wanted to stare at the band, and instead I spent a great deal of time trying to stay on my feet. But it was all worth it, I wouldn't want it any other way.
*****I think there are no two people who sing with each other better than Frank Black and Kim Deal. End of story on that one too.
There is more. Much more. I will try to add them again when they pile up. It was just one of the best shows I will ever see.

Why I Heart The Deal Sisters, or how I learned to stop worrying and love my Dave Lovering drum stick

Greetings all in a post-Pixies-at-Roy-Wilkins world. Shelley and I were at the Thursday night show (Nov. 11) and were rocked vigorously by the band. We've spewed most of our stories on the show today, but some that deserve to be noted for late risers:

We were maybe six feet away from Frank Black, who can still scream like a muthatrucka after all these years.

Kim Deal looked and sounded great, and still has one of the best smiles in rock. I luvs them Deal sisters! She had a little trouble during the Neil Young cover, but... oh... it was endearing.

During Debaser Dave Lovering busted a drum stick and in the blindness of the light show I was promptly smacked in the chest with it as he tossed it to me. Yes, he tossed it to me, and I think it was intentional, as he likely sensed my intense rock vibe and trendy music geek eyewear.

During Joey's guitar freak-out during Vamos, he began throwing picks out and Shelley nabbed one, despite the best efforts of some semi-literates in our vicinity.

I'm still not sure if the concert is over. There was possibly an ending and maybe an encore, but for all I know it could still be going on. It ended in a wonderful shambles.

We were sent a set list for the Wednesday night show from a listener who won tickets on the morning show and it does appear that they did the same set list only in reverse, starting with the songs they ended with on Thursday. Those kids with their rock and roll and decoder rings and reverse set lists!

Hey, if anyone was at the Thursday show and bought one of the CDs afterward, can we borrow it? We wanna find out what exactly occurred at the end.

Peace out.
Shyboy
