PLEDGE DRIVE A-GO-GO: THE RUNDOWN!

Hey everybody! As promised, here's the official line-up for the Pledge Drive a-go-go. In case you have missed all the relentless self promotion we do on both the a.m. and p.m. editions of the show, the whole shebang kicks off on Thursday, April 7th, six p.m., and comes to a screeching halt Friday, April 8th, six p.m. During that time Shelley and I will exist only on the basic human needs of caffeine and rock and roll, broadcasting LIVE without sleep while urging you to support KMSU/KMSK financially.

Drum roll...

April 7th, six p.m.
THE 24 HOUR PLEDGE DRIVE A-GO-GO KICKS OFF!
At this point please fasten your seatbelt, praise the good folks that invented vacation time and alarm clocks, and get ready for 24 hours of rocket fueled bliss.

April 7th, nine p.m.
SHUFFLE FUNCTION RADIO ROULETTE!
Long time listeners know that one of the most anticipated events on the Shuffle Function yearly calendar is our annual Shuffle Function Radio Roulette. We broadcast this every year at Halloween time because it is one of the scariest things you could ever possibly submit to.

How scary? Well, we number Shelley's vast collection of As Seen On TV records (which are wonderfully inconsistent in their song quality and selection) and throw the numbers into an actual magic hat. We then draw numbers to determine which record to play, then flip a coin to determine which side of the record to play, then roll a ten sided die from my magic bag of holding to determine the track we broadcast. We have absolutely no idea what we will play, as it is all random and left completely up to the radio gods.

Not Scary enough? Do you have any idea how much Air Supply is on these things?!

We will be joined by the always entertaining Lisa, who runs ktelclassics.com, the ultimate online K-tel resource. Lisa knows more than anyone has a right to know about K-tel compilations and we love her for it. Check out her amazing website for more info and surprises regarding the minefield that is K-tel.

MIDNIGHT
LIVE MUSIC FROM THE RHYTHMAPLEX PROJECT!
One of Shuffle Function's favorite Mankato bands is The Rhythmaplex Project. They don't sound like any other band in town and they literally bleed for their music. No lie, last year when they played during the Pledge Drive a-go-go there was bloodshed. The cause: ROCKING TOO HARD! The broadcast studios aren't really set up for live music, so we just point the microphones and duck and cover as they tear the roof off the joint.

April 8th, two a.m.
JANDEK: THE SOUNDS OF INSOMNIA!
I'll spare you the rehash of who and what Jandek is, and give you this link to an earlier post I made about my personal relationship with his music. To say Jandek is unusual and difficult is like saying Napoleon Dynamite impersonations are "a little annoying". It would be the understatement of the century. That's why Jandek is the perfect music for two in the morning, a time where only the night shift, serial killers, and radio show hosts are still awake.

We'll spend an hour discussing him and playing music from his 39 cds. Some would say that isn't enough time, and still others would say that is entirely too much time. Kurt Cobain once said that Jandek isn't pretentious but that people who like Jandek are. I don't know if any of this is true, but we're going to find out.

April 8th, five a.m.
365 DAYS PROJECT: THE FAVORITES!
During 2004 Otis Fodder initiated a project called The 365 Days Project. For one year he had a different person curate his website each day and post a sound file they selected. The files were at times crazy, funny, sad, boring, and... different. During this time the world was given a fascinating selection of sounds, and we're taking the five a.m. hour to highlight some of our favorites. It'll be worth getting up early for, or if you're like us, staying up late for.

April 8th, six a.m.
THE SHUFFLE FUNCTION MORNING SHOW: VINYL EDITION!
We here at Shuffle Function proudly use the turntables at KMSU on a daily basis, and we're giving them a two hour workout during our usual morning show time slot. If you have any requests they had better be on vinyl between six and eight! Tune in for more hiss and pop than a snake in a popcorn factory. VINYL FEVER! CATCH IT!

April 8th, noon
SHUFFLE FUNCTION RADIO ROULETTE: REDUX!
The game so nice they played it twice. People respond so positively to Shuffle Function Radio Roulette that we always get a bonus round in during the Pledge Drive a-go-go. To say it is fun is like saying Napoleon Dynamite impersonations are "a little annoying". It would be the understatement of the century. Wait... why is that so familiar?

DAMN YOU, JANDEK!

From here on out it is rock and roll and denial, with the last couple of hours being all about self preservation and, of course, fund raising. Afterwards, maybe a beer and some Playstation.

We have some pretty sweet swag lined up for the music geek in all of us, and we'll be announcing the details the week of the pledge drive, which officially kicks off Wednesday, April 6th. Please please please help KMSU out with your financial support. Stations like this are a dying breed, and when we have one in our own backyard that gives a damn about the community and presenting a unique and diverse playlist we need to do whatever we can to keep it alive. The only way that it can stay alive is through the continued financial support of generous listeners like you that are incredibly good looking, potent, have great taste in music, and respond well to flattery.

Thanks for your time, your requests, and all your input. As Shelley said recently when she was filling in for Gully: Together we make great radio. Truer words were never spoken. Except for the whole "ask not what your country can do for you..." speech, or that one about "a date that will live in infamy". Come to think of it, the lyrics to "Won't Get Fooled Again" ring pretty true...

So I guess there are really quite a few true words when you get right down to it. Shelley's words may not be the truest words ever, which I guess was implied. That's just crazy. But it is true that together KMSU and its listeners make great radio.

Shyboy

P.S.: By the way, the truest words ever are "I like pizza". I said them just last night.

EASTER EGG ALERT! At some point, between one a.m. and five a.m., we'll be playing the full 17:27 minute version of The Velvet Underground's Sister Ray and the full 17:05 minute version of Iron Butterfly's In A Gadda Da Vida. Isn't that radio worth supporting?

STOP DRAGGIN' MY HEALTH AROUND

Shyboy Tim here, checking in from the sofa. I've been hit by a nasty strain of whatever this unending illness is that's hitting everybody, but me and Mr. Show have a lot of catching up to do, so it all works out in the end.

Anyway, I think the only real cure for what ails me is to have my portrait drawn with Stevie Nicks.

Scroll through all the examples of Stevie Nicks art and tell me that the one of her with Paul Stanley isn't the greatest thing ever.

Buuuuut... if you also seem to think that 200 bucks for a black and white graphite drawing of Shyboy with Stevie is a waste of cash, let me just remind you that KMSU's pledge drive is coming up. That is definitely not a waste of money.

More details on the pledge drive, swag, and the 24 hour pledge drive a go go to follow.

ENDURANCE VS. PSYCHOSIS!

Hey, gang! We've mentioned it on the show but I thought we should put a formal post on the blog.

THE SHUFFLE FUNCTION 24-HOUR PLEDGE DRIVE A-GO-GO STARTS APRIL 7TH AT SIX P.M AND RUNS UNTIL APRIL 8TH, SIX P.M.!

This will be the third year that we're doing this to raise funds to keep KMSU, your on air bastion of corporation free broadcasting, up and running. Shelley and I will be on the air for 24 hours straight, rocking the airwaves and begging for your financial support to keep public radio public.

We have some great pledge drive premiums that are simply to sweet to announce so soon, but they are tailor made for the music geek in all of us. Feel free to let your resistance grow weak and give in to the sweet sweet swag we will be laying before you!

More info to come, but until then:

THE THIRD ANNUAL SHUFFLE FUNCTION PLEDGE DRIVE A-GO-GO!
Starts: April 7th, six p.m.
Ends: April 8th, six p.m

Wear something pretty.
