LEDGE DRIVE 2005

The Date: September 5th
The Event: THE LEGENDARY STARDUST COWBOY'S BIRTHDAY!

This past December we asked you guys to send Season's Greetings to our favorite cowboy, The Ledge. You responded overwhelmingly and sent enough cards to fill a scrapbook. The Ledge was touched and inspired, and in our little world that is the most important thing. The thought that he has all these fans and listeners out here in Southern Minnesota really fuels him to keep recording and playing.

Let's keep the guy happy.

His birthday is this coming Labor Day. If you would like to send birthday greetings to one of the most unique musicians ever to grace your radio dial, you may do so by writing to him at this address:

Norman Odam
The Legendary Stardust Cowboy
P.O. Box 36305
San Jose, CA 95158

We can't guarantee that he'll write you back, but maybe the odds will increase if you include a self addressed, stamped envelope. Also, put stars all over the envelope. He loves stars.

Right now the Ledge's primary creative outlet is gigging, none of which, sadly, is taking place anywhere near here. The album he is currently working on is on hold due to financial concerns. The guy needs to know that there are folks out here to appreciate him in all his uniqueness. Your cards and letters will really mean a lot to him and to us.

In other less Ledgy news, this Thursday is the final Pop Music Pajama Party for 2005, featuring the music of Joy Division. The music rocks, and we're pretty happy with the stupid little skits we have in store for you on this one. Thanks for all your great feedback on the previous PMPJPs, too.

One more thing...

KMSU is putting a pamphlet thingy together to introduce its programming and on-air personalities to the public that may not have heard of us. We need to come up with three or so sentences that describe our show, but we honestly don't know how to pidgeonhole it. Do you have any ideas? We sincerely would love to hear them. We'll scrounge up some CDs or something for the person that has the most interesting and workable idea.

Send your ideas to us at shufflefunction@hotmail.com

TWO OUTTA THREE AINT BAD

Is it a bad thing when I start quoting Meatloaf songs? Just checking.

Yesterday there was a Shuffle Function film expedition to the Twin Cities. This has to happen every once and a while, because there are just some films that will never ever ever hit the theaters in Mankato. As much as I hate road trips, it has to be done.

BROKEN FLOWERS by Jim Jarmusch
This was a great film. Bill Murray was wonderful, and so was the rest of the cast. I'm no critic, so you'll have to tune in to Maverick at the Movies on KMSU Sunday mornings to see if Nathan checks it out. I liked this film, though.

The Aristocrats by Penn Jillette & Paul Provensa
This was one brutally funny film. All the stuff you've heard about it being filled with the most unbelievably obscene and vulgar material ever is very true. If you can get beyond the vulgarity then you will be fascinated. Loads and loads of known and less known comedians meditate on the nature of this joke, its history, and the infinite ways to tell it. As all the press states, the joke is essentially a comedy jazz riff, where there is a set up and a punch line, but in between the comedian is free to unleash his or her own personal creativity (and sickness, as the case may be) to create the body of the joke.

The story that slayed me most was one that a few of the comedians told. Michael O'Donoghue (my favorite humorist of all time) and Chevy Chase used to throw parties based around this joke. The idea was that each humorist would have to take at least one half hour to tell this joke. Legend has it that O'Donoghue (who once said that satire wasn't enough anymore. "you have to drive and ice pick into the brain. Did I say ice an pick? I meant 900 ice picks".) was able to keep the joke going for 90 minutes. I can't even begin to imagine the dark places his version went to.

Do yourself a favor and read up on Michael O'Donoghue. He's the dead dark prince of comedy. Mr Mike: The Life and Work of Michael O'Donoghue is a good place to start. But I digress.

LAST DAYS by Gus Van Sant
Being both a Nirvana fan and a Van Sant fan, I was pretty excited to see this movie. It dwells on one of the great mysteries of recent rock and roll: What the hell did Kurt Cobain do for the last three days of his life? As far as I can tell, Last Days suggests that Kurt Cobain was so bored he was driven to suicide. Why do I think this? Because this film was so boring I am guessing a good chunk of the audience was considering this option, too.

In other news, Pop Music Pajama Parties are in full swing. This coming Thursday is our show dedicated to The Band, and on the 25th we're featuring Joy Division. Lotsa great music to look forward to.

I leave you with this link sent to us by old Shuffle Function pal Toddy. It presents a special kind of torture that only cat lovers can truly appreciate. I give you stuffonmycat.com.

THIS IS JUST A TRIBUTE

You gotta love tribute bands. Out on the road, night after night, doing their best to be best damn band in the world... by proxy. It is a thankless task, I'd say. Their job is a necessary one, at least until bands like AC/DC find the time to play in towns that are outnumbered in population by the total student body of many universities. So here are some links to some fascinating tribute acts:

MINI KISS:
Their promo states "you wanted the littlest, you got the littlest!" Yes, when you need an enormous band, but don't have the head room to spare, Mini Kiss is your act. All the members are Little People. Check it out.

It is interesting to note that there are A LOT of female AC/DC acts. Chuck Klosterman, in a Spin article on female tribute acts, notes that this could be a feminist statement to claim mysogenistic music as their own (or something like that). Here are some links to female AC/DC tributes:
AC/DShe
Hell's Belles
Whole Lotta Rosies
ThundHERstruck

And still some more tribute acts:
The Iron Maidens
Cheap Chick
Lez Zeppelin
Mistress of Reality

Gosh, I have to go to work. If you happen to know of any other unusual tribute act web pages (not of the bluegrass tribute variety. Lame.) send them our way.
