Wondertwins Power Activate - form of a volunteer!!!

As Shyboy Tim would so elegantly put it, here's the thing. We have a new poster for Shuffle Function, and we would like your help taping them up at your favorite coffee shops, record stores, and any other music geek hang-out that comes to mind. Tim and I have no problem hitting the Mankato/St. Peter area, but it's a big world out there and we could use your help. If you live "out and about", and would like to volunteer your time for the cause of free form radio, just drop us an email. Be sure to include your mailing address, and the number of posters you would like, and we will drop them into the mailbox and send them on their way. When you are tallying up the number of posters you can use, please keep in mind that these expenditures come out of the pockets of Tim and I, so please don't use the fuzzy math!!!

thanks -

Shelley

HARRY MERRY WEEKEND!

In case you missed it, Friday morning we declared the weekend of Nov 4th - 6th "Harry Merry Weekend". So, you may ask, what the heck is a Harry Merry? How is this relevant to me in 21st Century America, with the videos and the podcasts and the DVD players and the making with the happies? I'm glad you asked.

This past Wednesday the Shuffle Function Contingent went to see Quintron at the 7th Street Entry. Perfect venue to see the wild eyed volcanic organ work of a man who would probably be an evil genius had he chosen a different line of work. We had already expected to see a different kind of show knowing it was Quintron, but we had no idea what the other acts on the bill would be like.

Enter Harry Merry.

Harry entered the room dressed as a "dutch boy" with the classic Dutch Boy haircut, likely a nod to his Netherlands heritage. He walked on his heels, probably to emulate the look of wearing clogs. His gear: A keyboard and CD player. Harry would cue up a backing track on the CD and accompany it on keyboard, singing in a thick northern European accent songs like "My Friend Superstar", "Rock and Roll Post Man", and "The Appetite Gets Satisfied Each Bite". He looks a little like Crispin Glover, and his stage act definitely has that kind of sensibility to it. Sometimes he'd cue up the wrong track on the CD player and then fiddle with it, apologizing and saying "eet eez a nuisance, isn't it?"

By the end of the set I had purchased his CD. Folks might not believe me otherwise.

Thursday we were all spazzy over Quintron, but the real buzz in our brains was Harry's set. We ended up talking about him for most of the show and then we debuted on the show "Moody Bus Driver", our favorite track on his CD "Well... Here's Another Nice Mess You've Got Me Into" from the Tocado label. Five minutes of unhinged keyboard and vocals about a busdriver with a gambling problem who is.. well, moody, and treats his passengers shabbily. During the song a listener called and said that he had never turned his radio completely off in the car before, but made an exception for Harry Merry.

Needless to say, we were hooked.

The kicker is that all that night and the first second I was awake on Friday, I had "Moody Bus Driver" running through my head. I met Shelley at the station and said "all night I've had..." and she finished my sentence with "Moody Bus Driver". Good to know I'm not the only one. We spent the whole of Friday's show talking about Harry again. His music is odd, yet very catchy. We debuted his track "Alright, Rebecca!" and now I have that song stuck in my head, too. At somepoint, I'm not sure when, we decided that if we were going down then everybody else was coming with us. HARRY MERRY WEEKEND WAS DECLARED!

The bands page of Tocado has a Harry Merry entry that includes an mp3 of Moody Bus Driver. Download it and listen to it. Play it for friends. It has an In The Mouth Of Madness brilliance to it. You may not take to Harry at first, but give it a chance. After a while you won't be able to get it out of your head. While you are listening, go to harrymerry.com and check out the gallery, read the bio, immerse yourself in Harry's world.

We here at Shuffle Function have gone deep. We are now Harry Merry fans. Join us, won't you?

Shyboy

PODCAST? THAT'D BE TOO CONVENIENT!

We get e-mails and calls from folks all the time about podcasting. Believe me when I say we would love to podcast. There's just one problem: Licensing. We'd have to license every second of music we would broadcast via podcasting. I've looked all over trying to find that one loophole that would allow us to get away with a music podcast, but it would be financially disastrous. Oh sure, we could try and get away with just doing it, but KMSU and Shuffle Function would be screwed legally. And we all know how painful that can be.

I'm guessing the only folks that can afford the luxury of music podcasting are commercial radio networks, and it would certainly be in their interest to keep the cost of licensing prohibitive for independent outlets. Sigh. Sometimes it is tough to be the good guys.

Anyway, if anybody knows of a legal way for us to do this and not shaft the musicians and ourselves, let us know. We're certainly open to suggestions. We'd love to make the show more accessible for the folks that can't hear us live.
