TODAY IS THE DAY!!!

Today, Monday February 30th, marks the beginning of some great radio on KMSU. Between the hours of 2 and 3 p.m., you will have the opportunity to hear eight new radio shows, hosted by local music geeks not unlike Tim and I. Having heard what is in store for our listening audience, I have been counting down the days until today - so let me run down what's in store for you.

MONDAYS
Two hosts will trade off every other week on Monday. Today begins with:

THE MAVERICK SLIM HOUR, with your host Maverick Slim a.k.a Gary. The title of Gary's show is still up in the air, but the format isn't. It's roots music all the way. While discussing the focus of his show Gary explained that the term 'roots music' would also mean "playing The Sex Pistols and The Clash, the whole punk thing.", to which I happily said "Yes, please!!!" Seriously folks, the music and knowledge that Gary brings to this show has literally made me gasped. I know you are going to love it.
next Monday -
SOUL JUNCTION, with your host The Prez. We are all in for a treat when Prez brings his music collection into the studio. Unsung heroes could be the theme of Soul Junction. The great jazz and blues artists who have received little to no airtime are getting their just desserts. When you listen to Prez talk about this music, you are transformed to the Chicago of his youth and you are right here with him, cruising around from club to club, soaking up the music and the atmosphere.

TUESDAYS
WE WANT THE AIRWAVES, with your host Dan. Those of you who catch Shuffle Function's morning show are familiar with Dan, as he has been Program Director for the Day a number of times. The one thing to know about Dan is that he has a big record and music collection, and he is not afraid to use it. Expect to hear lots of deep cuts from some of your favorites from the 60's and 70's peppered with the new music of today. Just to give a heads up, if you are a fan of "guitar rock", you will want to tape Dan's show. It's one of his many specialties.

WEDNESDAYS
"33 1/3" , with your hosts E-Man, E-Lars and Big W. Three St. Peter boys made good, the name of their show says it all. Expect to hear alot of vinyl on this show. As we have noted on the air, the vinyl quotient for the station has "blown the roof off the sucka", which makes us very excited in Shuffle Function land. Lots of album cuts from the 60's, and 70's as well as music from E-Lars favorite record labels, Drag City and Kill Rock Stars. It's a healthy blend of the old and the new.

THURSDAYS
FREE FORM FREAKOUT, with your hosts - Tune Town Heroes Carl and Dave. Their goal is to expose you the listener to the best of the new music. That being said, when you add Dave to the mix, it is a given that you will also be hearing the best of the kind of music you read about but never get to hear. My guess is that if you read our blog you are familiar with Tune Town, which means you are also as excited as I am at the prospect of Carl and dave having their own show!!
(secret trivia question: What prompted both Shyboy Tim and Carl to go into radio? The answer, WKRP in Cincinnati)

FRIDAYS
This is another day in which the hosts will be trading off.

TREASURES AND GUILTY PLEASURES, with your host Deb. Shuffle Function listeners will recognize Deb as her alter ego, Deb A-Go-Go. When it comes to bubblegum music and Minnesota garage bands, nobody knows more than Deb does. If you like your power pop and sweet hooky riffs, this is the place for you every other Friday afternoon at 2 p.m.

SCARY COUNTRY with your host Joe. The name pretty much tells you what it is, you will hear spine tingling, shiver making country and alt. country music when Joe takes over. This is the kind of music perhaps you grew up with, hating, but now find yourself drawn to. This is where you will hear the country music that doesn't make it onto those "other" radio stations. Both old and new, Joe doesn't discriminate, they just have to scare the crap out of you!!!

THE ZAPPA HOUR again with your host Joe. The legendary show is returning to KMSU's airwaves when Joe ducks into his Zappa collection. We know that alot of you dig your Zappa, so now you must mark your calendar for this day.

So these are the new shows.
We are really excited about the variety and the depth that this new line up brings to KMSU, and we welcome all of the hosts into the Music Geek Family. If you have any questions about the line up, or a new show, please don't hesitate to ask. Drop us an email, or give us a call at the station, (507) 389 - 5113. Keep the radio tuned to 89.7 !!!

HOLY CRAP! JOHN CALE IS ALREADY OUT!

How this escaped from me I'll never know, as it was probably my favorite album of 2005 (as an import), but the new John Cale is out in the U.S. on Astralworks! Much sooner than I expected, and I'm about three months late, apparently!

Go to Tune Town and give Carl the business... NOW! SUPPORT INDEPENDENT MUSIC RETAILERS!

John Cale related youtube.com finds:
The Velvet Underground - Sunday Morning
Nico - I'm Not Saying
Edie Sedgwick collage

End communication.

Shyboy

Yep. Rick Springfield.

Here's Miriam subjecting Rick "Jesse's Girl" Springfield to fashion transgressions. Thanks, Miriam! Be on the look out, kids, for celebrities that are also asking for this sort of treatment. Grab a snapshot of them with a Shuffle Function t-shirt and send it our way.

All sorts of stuff going on in Shuffle Function land, including the impending announcement of the 24 Hour Pledge Drive A-Go-Go dates. We'll let you know when it is happening on the February 2nd edition of Shuffle Function: Unbound, which airs at six p.m. Thursdays. Mark your calendars!

In addition to prepping for that, you soon notice a plethora of new and wonderful programming airing at 2 p.m. weekdays on 89.7 The Maverick. I'll save the full line up and descriptions for their own blog post, but for now...

LINK FARM!

YACHT ROCK!
Yacht Rock is the name of a web t.v. series on channel101.com, and it is a back-handed look at that dreadful dreadful era in music where album cover photos always seemed to feature yachts and folks were singing about sailing and islands alot. The main characters in the series are Michael "Ya Mo Be There" McDonald, and Kenny "Theme From Caddyshack" Loggins, if that gives you any indication of where this show is coming from. Anyway, it is hilarious. Another great show on channel101 is...

COMPUTER MAN!
Computer Man is the story of a man and his computer and their action filled adventures. Did I mention the computer is played by Jack Black, who wears only Fruit Of The Looms and a computer monitor shell? Yep. Trivia buffs will also note that the theme to Computer Man is being hummed and strummed by J.B. in School of Rock just before the girls tell him the name of the band.

Nose around channel101.com for lots of other interesting programming.

MUSIC/VIDEO GEEK NIRVANA
youtube.com has lots and lots of video. Cool video. Rare video. FORBIDDEN VIDEO. The quality isn't great, but there's a lot to see. Here's some of the cool stuff I found while nosing around:

Public Image Ltd. on American Bandstand, and they couldn't care less.

The Pixies performing "Gigantic". 'Nuff Said.
A bunch of Smiths videos, including:
How Soon Is Now?

The Boy With the Thorn In His Side
and then there's
The Yardbirds peforming Heart Full Of Soul
The Stooges LIVE 1970. The iconic peanut butter incident!
Talking Heads performing Psycho Killer on The Old Grey Whistle Test.
Tom Waits:
I Don't Wanna Grow Up
Downtown Train
Blow Wind Blow
Eggs and Sausage on Saturday Night Live
Goin Out West
Kentucky Avenue and Small Change on the BBC, 1979
Cripes, there's a lot more Waits. Check it out.
The Rolling Stones:
Mannish Boy with Muddy Waters
Loving Cup
Sympathy For The Devil live at Altamount
Jumping Jack Flash
I GOT YOU BABE! Miming the Sonny and Cher song!
Respectable
There's a Ton of Stones Stuff, too, as you can see.
Also:
MC5 performing Kick out the Jams
Television performing Foxhole
Husker Du video for Makes No Sense At All/Love Is All Around
Husker Du performing Could You Be The One on the Joan Rivers Show
Bauhaus' video for Bela Lugosi's Dead
Sex Pistols live performing Anarchy in the UK
Sex Pistols performing No Fun at Winterland, 1978
The Cramps performing Tear It Up
The Cramps performing at the Napa State Hospital

Uh... did I miss anything? If you happen to see any other cool videos while you nose around youtube.com, please send the link to us and we'll post it.

Well, there goes an afternoon! Keep posted for a complete line-up of the two p.m. KMSU shows, as well as snapshots documenting "A Day In The Life of the Legendary Stardust Cowboy".
