ATTA BOY, LUTHER!

Don Knotts 1924 - 2006

I was pretty sad to hear that Don Knotts had died. I think it was a year ago that I picked up a kick ass four pack of his movies on DVD, simply because it included "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken", my all time favorite of his films. One of the first things that my family did when we first moved to Mankato years and years ago was go to the Twin Star Drive In, and that film was on the bill that night. It was classic Don Knotts, all twichy and rubbery faced, with some suspense and supernatural overtones. Check it out if you haven't seen it.

I remember seeing an interview with Jim Carrey not long after he started to hit it really big. He was asked what all the sudden fame was like and he described it as being completely exhausted at three in the morning and you turn the channel, discovering that "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken" is on, and you are compelled to finish watching it. I thought that was a great explanation anyway, but to use a film like that just slayed me.

Also, watch The Private Eyes. The combination of Don Knotts and Tim Conway will always be comedy gold in my book.

Just wanted to share.

PLEDGE DRIVE A GO GO IV: THE VOYAGE HOME

It's coming, kids! We've been talking it up on the air for a few weeks, but this is the official blogosphere announcement for the fourth 24 Hour Pledge Drive A Go Go! Starting at six p.m. on March 30th, Shelley and I will be LIVE on the air for 24 hours straight to raise money for your public radio station, KMSU. True believers that we are, we'll exist only the basic human needs of caffeine and Rock & Roll, spinning tunes and desperately begging for your support. It'll all come to a screeching halt on March 31st @ six p.m. when we drag ourselves outta the studio and collapse at the nearest bar.

Pledge Drive means more than just incessant begging, however. It also means PREMIUMS! We'll have a new t-shirt for you, another glorious comp, some really cool Ktel comps, as well CDs that were sent in a box with this label:

HOLY CRAP KIDS! JANDEK PERSONALLY SENT US CDs TO USE AS PLEDGE DRIVE PREMIUMS! SHUFFLE FUNCTION SCRAWLED IN HIS HAND!

I feel like we've been blessed or something.

We'll be announcing the full 24 hour line up March 2nd @ six p.m. on "Shuffle Function: Unbound", so mark your calendars. In the meantime, rest up, take your vitamins, and set aside donating funds for the Shuffle Function 24 Hour Pledge Drive A Go Go IV: The Voyage Home!

"AINT NO SUNSHINE WHEN IT'S GONE," says Shelley...

Arrested Development is gone. Two solid hours of genius popped a cap into it this past Friday and we're in full on grieving mode around the Shuffle Function Conglomoplex. There is word that Showtime is seriously interested in picking the show up, but the creator of it isn't sure if he wants the show to go on. Apparently three years of working his butt off creating a hilarious and critically acclaimed show that nobody watched has taken it's toll. Sigh. Who can blame him?

In station news, we want to thank everybody that has been calling in to let the two o'clock show folks that they are digging what they do. They are all working incredibly hard and having a blast, and we think it shows. Keep listening and let the folks up here know if there is something they are doing that you like. They are doing this for the love of radio, and your thanks and feedback means a lot to them.

STUFF RELATED TO THE FRIDAY SHOWS!
This coming Friday you're gonna be hearing the second show of Treasures and Guilty Pleasures, with your host Debbie-a-go-go. She plays lots of Bubblegum music and Garage rock, as well as "other neat stuff." Here's some Bubblegum and Garage clips from my new favorite website, youtube.com.

The Standells - Dirty Water
13th Floor Elevators - You're Gonna Miss Me
The Osmonds - Crazy Horses
Shadows of Knight - Gloria
Electric Prunes - I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night
Pink Floyd - See Emily Play

When Deb isn't on you'll be hearing Joe Tougas and his two great shows, Scary Country and The Zappa Hour. Both excellent shows and absolutely worth making an appointment to hear. Here's some scary country and Zappa clips, also from youtube.com.

Hank Williams - Hey Good Lookin'
Loretta Lynn - Don't Come Home a Drinkin' (with lovin' on your mind)
Johnny Cash & Carl Perkins - Blue Suede Shoes
Dolly Parton & Porter Wagoner - The Right Combination

Frank Zappa on The Steve Allen Show, 1963
Frank is soooooo young in this clip, and really pretty humble.
Frank Zappa on Crossfire, 1986
If you weren't old enough to experience the horrors of "THE EIGHTIES" then this clip will give you one great example of why they sucked and nostalgia for them is misguided. The senate hearings on music censorship, where they were actually advocating government censorship of speech and expression, still make me reel. You'll get the idea from this clip about how screwed up these hearings were. Even scarier is the fact that you'll see that NOTHING has changed since then. As they say, the more things change, the more they stay the same. Zappa was the posterboy for free speech at this time, and he put up with an awful lot of crap. Honestly, if it wasn't for his bold stance there might actually be government suppression of art and literature simply because somebody somewhere had a bug up their ass.

Anyway, thanks for everything, gang. We'll get an announcement with the dates for the Pledge Drive a-go-go coming soon. It's March 30th through the 31st. Oops. Those were the dates. We'll say more or something later.

ALL THE LOVERS IN THE HOUSE SAY "YEAH"

Hello Radio Land -
Shuffle Function is once again marking Valentine's Day this year with your song dedications. Whether or not you want to share the love, maybe spread the love around, or simply wad up the love into a football shape obelisk and kick it to the corner - you just need to let us know. We realize that playing Valentine's Day dedications is standard fare for a live radio show, but here's the twist. YOU - our listening audience - are not standard fare. You are "better than your average bear" so to speak (you have to forgive the bear reference, I just watched the documentary, Grizzly Man). Last year you put your thinking caps on and came up with some awesomely inventive dedications, and we suspect this year will be no different.
You can email us your Valentine Day dedications at shufflefunction@hotmail.com or give us a call at the station weekday mornings from 6 to 8 a.m. Sooner is better than later, in case we have to enter the Shuffle Function Vinyl Vaults to search out your song.

Thanks for listening, and we look forward to what Valentine's day will bring.

Shelley
