END OF THE YEAR SHENANIGANS!

It's the end of the year, so we have a couple of special programming notes for you:

Thursday, the 27th of December, on Shuffle Function: UNBOUND (six p.m.) we're rebroadcasting our first ever year end show. It's from Year One of Shuffle Function: 2001, post 9/11, less than a year on the air. That first year we were on the air we started the ugly trend of creating lots of labor intensive shows that we ultimately love but take loads of time that we don't have. This particular show is no exception. It's a flashback show, looking back at our very first radio experience. You'll hear a VERY young Shyboy Tim and Shelley spinning their favorite tunes. We think you'll get a kick out of it.

THEN...

On New Years Day (six to eight a.m.) we're going to be out of the office, so we're rebroadcasting our April Fools Day show from Year One of The Shuffle Function Morning Show. Yes, it's the return of The Safe FM, a show where we changed our format to the "best" in soft rock. We thought the joke would be pretty apparent right off the bat, but the volume of concerned and angry calls and e-mails we received that day told us otherwise. Tune in and hear our own personal "War of the Worlds". It's a horrifying vision of a world without the KMSU you know and love. GIVE AT PLEDGE TIME!

Have a great 2008!

I LEARNED A NEW TRICK

I have some free time on my hands, since my family is getting together next week to celebrate Christmas, and I am going to use it to show off my new skill set - posting You Tube clips. It is a high tech world, and I am a high tech girl!!!

This is a two-fer-one deal. This first clip is from the classic Jack Nicholson flick 'Five Easy Pieces'. This is your reference point for the following clip.
(Oh - for those EXTREME Shuffle Function listeners playing along at home, you may recall our out of context use of Jack's line about holding the chicken in our Pop Music Pajama Party spoofing of 'The Shining' called 'The Shuffle Functioning')

The following clip was last years second place winner for the Premium Grain Belt Commercial Contest. It stars Rich Kronfeld from the short lived brilliant TV show that would still be on the air if I won the lottery, 'Let's Bowl'. I miss that show, and still curse Comedy Central for their stupidity. But I digress..........enjoy!!!

YOUR CHRISTMAS MORNING SOUNDTRACK

Just a reminder, ShyBoy Tim and I will be live from 6 to 8 am both December 24th AND Christmas day. We will be spinning Christmas tunes and taking your requests so email them to us anytime at shufflefunction@hotmail.com or call us at the station at 389 - 5678 or 1-800-456-7810. We have not been live since the first year we were on the morning show and nobody told us that it was okay to sleep in, but that was an amazing year. We heard from soldiers listening online in Germany, and got some excellent requests, so we are looking forward to this Tuesday morning.

In the holiday spirit, I came across this clip at a blog and can't stop watching it. If this was a number of years earlier, an Atari, and the little boy was a girl...............well this would be me.

Happy Holidays everyone. Safe travels and rest to you all - Shelley

I just updated the playlist for the last month and so if you surfed over this way to find the Legendary Stardust Cowboy's mailing address, here it is in a nutshell.

Send your holiday war whoops to:

There is something to be said for expensive T.V. channels. The LAST (?!!!??) episode of "Extras" airs on H.B.O. or Showtime or some other channel that I don't have this weekend. Just like they did in "The Office", Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant are giving us only a few seasons and a goodbye show ala the Christmas Special. You can watch a sneak peek of the last "Extras" episode here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=krwFU_g21D0

Now that "Extras" is done, what is next for these guys?

Last but not least, I want to give you a big heads up to a very special song we will be sharing with you this week. I picked it up at a thrift store this summer, and have been dying to play it ever since. I'll give you a hint..............................it's a Christmas song. That's all I can tell you !!!! Tune in this week to the morning show to hear it - you don't want to miss it for the world.

Shelley

COWBOYS NEED LOVE FOR THE HOLIDAYS!

Long time listeners to Shuffle Function know that we love love LOVE the Legendary Stardust Cowboy. He's an original in every sense, and he's always been very good to our show and to the station.

A few years ago we started a tradition to help make The Ledge's Xmas season a little brighter. He's always loved getting fan mail, and he's never bashful about giving out his mailing address so that people can contact him. This time of year we like to make sure that Norman (his real name) knows that his fans in Southern Minnesota, Northern Iowa, and The World want him to have a happy holiday season. If you would like to send Season's Greetings to our favorite cowboy, please send your card or letter to:

Legendary Stardust Cowboy
P.O. Box 36305
San Jose, CA 95158

Put stars all over the envelope, as he loves stars. Also, if you are interested in a reply, maybe send a self-addressed, stamped envelope, too. It'll make things easier for him, if he's up for a reply.

A few years ago The Ledge received so many cards and letters that a scrapbook was started for them, so let's add to the book! Make his season bright, won't you?

Thanks.

We'll we're airing the show, so that's gotta be a good sign, right? Seriously, we actually discussed whether or not we'd even do this again if it turned out as bad as last time. Dodged a bullet this year, I guess!

RADIO ROULETTE! THURSDAY, OCT. 25th @ 6 pm!

The day of reckoning is at hand...

What you see above is the nerve center of the Shuffle Function Conglomocorp. This impenetrable space is the home of Shelley's vast collection of Ktel compilation LPs. Four hundred of them, to be exact. We roll them out twice a year: During the 24 Hour Pledge Drive a-go-go, and at Halloween time. Yes, Halloween time, because leaving our playlists up to the radio gods is the scariest thing we can imagine.

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 25th AT SIX p.m.! IT'S SHUFFLE FUNCTION RADIO ROULETTE!

What is Shuffle Function Radio Roulette, you may ask? Well, we take Shelley's previously mentioned collection of Ktel compilations and throw our destiny to the random determination of dice and drawn numbers. We have absolutely no idea what we will be playing, because it is all determined by chance.

Each of Shelley's albums has a number on it. That number is then thrown into an actual magic hat. We draw numbers to determine what record we will play, then we flip a quarter to determine whether we play Side A or Side B (it is all vinyl kids!). After that, it takes a roll of the ten sided die from my magic bag of holding, and we are able to find out what we are playing.

Sounds like fun right? Well, usually it is. Last year, however, the show's songs were SO BAD that we actually decided to tape a "do over" show to see if we couldn't be spared. We left an offering of sweets and flowers at the radio tower, and prayed that it would be better the second time around.

It wasn't. It was the roughest show we've ever endured.

So pray for us this coming Thursday. We think we've been very good to the Radio Gods this year, and hopefully we'll be rewarded with a stellar playlist that can only be delivered by randomly selected songs off of Ktel records.

Good luck, people.

Also, don't forget to swing over to twelvehourfilmfest.blogspot.com for info about the KMSU Twelve Hour Film Festival! We had a great response for it during the pledge drive, but there are still a few seats left and we'd like to fill them for the inaugural year. Twenty bucks gets you six great films from noon to midnight, Saturday, November 3rd. The t-shirts are gone, guys! You had to pledge to become a shirt wearin' VIP during the pledge drive, but you can still see the films.

THANK YOU RADIO HEROES

A big thank you goes out to all of you that called or emailed in your pledge for the KMSU Fall Pledge Drive. It is always great to hear from our listeners, and this Pledge Drive was no exception. We thought we'd try something a little different this time around.- the KMSU 12 Hour Film Festival. As if we didn't have enough to do with our mission to save radio, we wish to save cinema too.

To those of you who will be joining us Saturday November 3rd, a big hearty THANK YOU. In fact a thank you doesn't really seem to be enough. We intend to make the Film festival an annual Fall event, and your enthusiastic support speaks volumes in making this happen. So when we see you at the movies don't be suprised to see Shhyboy Tim and I break out in tears of happiness!!! Well, okay probably not Tim - but he will have a big smile on his face as he fights back the tears!!!

KMSU means the world to us; and your pledge of support shows just how important KMSU is to you too. Together we really do make great radio.

SWAG-O-RAMA!

You may have noticed that the pledge drive is upon us. We do this a couple of times a year to raise funds to keep KMSU on the air, and then the rest of the year you don't have to worry about being plagued by our desperate pleas for your help, let alone commercials!

So why should you donate? Well, if you find that KMSU is a part of your day, then you probably realize that this station is the kind of station that is hard to come by. Most of its programming is locally produced by people from your communities and do this because they love what they do. Yes, this station truly is a labor of love, and we think that comes through in the music we play and the subjects we present.

Unfortunately, this labor of love is expensive to keep on the air, even if it is manned mostly by volunteers! Because we are a public station we cannot sell our airtime for advertising. We're funded by businesses that underwrite our airwaves, and by the generosity of folks like that you that appreciate the kind of diversity and unique programming that you can only find on 89.7/91.3 fm.

Also, there's swag!

So you know how we're always whining about how you can never see a good movie in this town? You know how we're constantly going on and on about how badly we wish we could see simply great film being screened without having to drive 1 1/2 hours to find a theater that does that? Well, KMSU has decided that now is the time for action!

PRESENTING:

THE KMSU TWELVE HOUR FILM FESTIVAL!

Six Films! Twelve hours! Bathroom Breaks!
Saturday, November 3rd - Noon to Midnight!

KMSU goes out of it's way daily to provide listeners with music and content that they cannot find anywhere else on the radio dial. Now we are extending that mission to the world of cinema!

What are the films? Good question. Because of the regulations regarding non-profit screenings of films, we are unable to mention them on this blog. We can, however, have a separate page dealing with them. GO HERE NOW: twelvehourfilmfest.blogspot.com.

A BERGMAN FILM? ON CAMPUS?!

Wow. I don't know the last I saw a film shown on the MNSU campus that wasn't a lame second run screening of a film I never wanted to see in the first place. I thought the days of exotic and challenging cinema beeing screened on campus was a thing that only our ancestors were able to enjoy. But check this out:

Film evenings to honor Ingmar Bergman, Michelangelo Antonioni
Two of Europe's greatest film directors
2007-08-31

The Department of English and the Scandinavian Studies Program will sponsor two film evenings to honor Ingmar Bergman and Michelangelo Antonioni, two of the greatest European film directors of the 20th Century who died on July 30.

Swedish director Bergman will be honored Tuesday, Sept. 4, with a showing of "The Seventh Seal" (1957). Italian director Antonioni will be honored in the first week of October, featuring the film "Blowup" (1966). Both events are free and open to students, faculty, staff and the public.

"The Seventh Seal" (1957) will be shown at 7 pm in Wissink Hall 285. Donald F. Larsson, professor in the Film Studies program and a Bergman specialist, will say a few words in memory of Bergman. "The Seventh Seal" (Swedish: "Det sjunde inseglet") is an existential film that tells the story of a medieval knight who returns from the crusades, thoroughly shaken in his faith, only to find his homeland ravished by the plague. In his despair, he challenges death himself to a game of chess, his life resting on the outcome. This amazing and suspenseful film has long been regarded one of the masterpieces of 20th century cinema.

More information about the Antonioni event will be available in coming weeks.

If you guys are bored tonight and want to see some great cinema, then go to this screening! If folks turn out for something like this, then maybe more great cinema will be shown on campus. It would be fantastic if the Mankato area had more opportunities to see really great films, wouldn't it? Hopefully, if this receives support from the community, we'll see those opportunities present themselves.
