The Hills are Alive with the Sound of POP MUSIC PAJAMA PARTIES

This Thursday night, August 2nd, we will be kicking off the Shuffle Function Pop Music Pajama Party season!!!! Not quite sure what that means - then let me give you the skinny. Every August Tim and I choose a few of our favorite bands and artists, and we feature their music. In between the tunes we offer some home made radio dramas for your listening pleasure. These dramas feature the Shuffle Function Wrecking Crew, and their contents remain TOP SECRET until the night they air, but the music is not a secret.

GRAB A PEN, GRAB YOUR CALENDER, AND WRITE THESE DAYS DOWN:

Thursday August 2 at 6 p.m. - our COVERS SHOW. Bands playing the songs of other bands. It's really that simple. The Covers show has always kicked off our Pop Music Pajama Party season.

Thursday August 9 at 6 p.m. - music of THE CRAMPS. Lux and Ivy in all of their rockabilly, shockabilly, monster singing glorious madness. Take those rubber pants out of the closet and color your hair jet black, and turn it up. Way up.

Thursday August 16 at 6 p.m. - music produced by Joe Meek. The first Brit to have a number one hit in the good old U.S.A. with "Telstar". The first of two Music producers featured in this years Pop Music Pajama Party season.

Thursday August 23 at 6 p.m. - music of XTC. Their album Skylarking would make my island top 5 record list. And if that doesn't do it for you, I have heard this band BOTH name checked AND played on the late great Gilmore Girls T.V. show. I rest my case.

Thursday August 30 at 6 p.m. - music produced by Phil Spector. Don't remember him just for his hair cuts and court cases, this man had his hands in some of the most important music ever made, let alone the best Christmas album EVER.

So there it is. Write it down, memorize it, and tell everyone you know - POP MUSIC PAJAMA PARTIES HAVE COME TO SHUFFLE FUNCTION TOWN!!!!

see you there -

Shelley

THREE YEARS: THE VINYL ANNIVERSARY

O.k., admittedly ALL anniversaries are the vinyl anniversary in the Shuffle Function universe, but it still bears repeating. ANYWAY... this Friday, July 27th, the Shuffle Function Morning Show turns three years old. Three years of giving up the sleep for rock! Three years of trying to get airplay for bands that you'll never hear on commercial radio outlets! Three years of morning radio for people that hate morning radio!

This little show would not exist if not for you guys. Without your support, KMSU would not exist. As a thank you for all that you guys have given to this station, we've assembled some gift bags. Life Style Enhancers, we like to call them. We'll be giving one of these Life Style Enhancers away every half hour between six and eight a.m., but of course there is a catch.

To win one of these buggers you will need to sing the Shuffle Function Morning Show Theme LIVE on the air! Listen for the rooster crow, then be the first person to call us at 389-5678 or 1-800-456-7810. If you can sing the whole theme for us over the phone, then you win one of these sweet bags-o-fun!

http://www.suturesound.com/stwpt/tracks/0075_shuffle_function_theme.mp3

The above is a link to the theme song. Download it. Study it. Sing it.

Here are the lyrics:

0075. THEME FROM SHUFFLE FUNCTION

Your alarm clock goes off and it's way to early to get up.
I know you were out late or something, and should really hit the snooze,
'cause it's too early in the morning.
Boy, would another few minutes of sleep really do it!

Just sleep in today.
I'm sure you have some sick days left at work.
Tell them you've got the plague.
It works every time. Every time!
And I'll cover for you, 'cause I'm that kind of guy.

Well, no I'm not, but I listen to Shuffle Function
with Shyboy Tim and Shelley
(enemies of commercial radio).
Their show is almost as good as sleep.
It's pop music as pornography.

.atsap tseb eht sekam nataS

Tell them your car broke down.
Tell them you're all snowed in.
Just get your sleep. Just get your sleep.
Tell them your car broke down.
Tell them you're all snowed in.
Just get your sleep,

or at least listen to Shuffle Function
with Shyboy Tim and Shelley
(two music geeks on the radio).
Their show is almost as good as sleep.
It's pop music as pornography.

So come listen to Shuffle Function
with Shyboy Tim and Shelley.
It's pop music as pornography.

Oh, Shuffle Function!

READY? O.k.! Good luck, Music Geeks!

KMSU HOSTS, VOLUNTEERS, AND EMPLOYEES NOT ELIGIBLE!

Oh Happy Day

Greetings from VacationLand,

I have been in the Twin Cities visiting with family most of the week, and yesterday I had a chance to visit a couple thrift store and vinyl shops. I found something at Hymie's Vintage Records in Minneapolis (don't know about this place? you need to !!!! here is a link to a great article: www.mnblues.com/review/2001/hymies-al.html ) that I have to tell you about. I have been looking for a copy of WattStax ever since falling in love with Stax and it's music. You must have heard me go on and on about the movie by now, if you listen to the show. I have often found really beat up copies, or copies with one record missing, but yesterday I found a great copy at Hymie's for $6.66 !!!! I bought some more treats (that I will be sharing with you all probably next week) but when I went to check out, the always awesome and helpfull owners said these magic words, "I have a copy of the second soundtrack in the basement, would you like that too?"

I couldn't help myself, I did a little handclap and jumped up and down!!! The owner just laughed, explained that she often got that reaction, and went down to fetch me the album. So I now own both WattStax albums on vinyl!!! It makes for a happy Shelley.

See you on Monday -

Shelley

DARK DAYS FOR WEB RADIO, or why the politicians just don't get it.

Well, the new legislation for higher internet broadcasting royalty payments does into effect on the 15th. NPR's move to get a stay on the new rates has been shot down, and this was sort of the last hope for independent web radio broadcasters to stay in business. What is this all about?

the U.S. Copyright Royalty Board (CRB) and SoundExchange have established new royalty rates for anyone broadcasting music on the internet. This includes web only stations and terrestrial stations that simulcast on the internet. These new rates are oppressive and will result in the end of many internet only stations, as well as the termination of web service by many non-commercial stations that simulcast on the internet. Stations like KMSU.

The people most effected by this new royalty scheme will the independent media voices: The voices that are not controlled by stock holders and commercial interests. The outlets that do answer to those parties already have all the money in the world, and will likely have no problem paying these excessive new rates. As it it, the new royalties required to be paid would exceed the total income for the independent stations trying to get their voices heard.

This is a desperate moment for internet radio. Even though we are only days away from these changes, it isn't too late to speak up. To find out who you can talk to to get your voice heard, go to http://www.savenetradio.org/ and find out who in Washington you can contact.

Only time will tell what this will mean for KMSU's webcast. I know we have loads of people listening to Shuffle Function all over the country, and the world for that matter. These new royalties have the potential to cut off that audience.

In a nutshell, that sucks.

BIG BRAINED BROADBAND TIME WASTERS!

It's not a big secret around these parts that the folks at the Shuffle Function Conglomoplex have grown to love Yoko Ono. Yeah, she's abrasive and often inaccessible, but it's not often revealed that she's also written some amazing pop songs. The recent collection of collaborations with uber hip indie folks, Yes, I'm A Witch, is a pretty good place to start if you'd like to explore her stuff a bit more. The versions of her songs on this collection are reimagined and many times more pallatable than her original versions, and make an excellent gateway to the world of Yoko Ono.

Much less palatable are her works you can find on Ubuweb, a fascinating internet archive of films and sound recordings. You can find some of Yoko's less accessible recordings on here, as well as a collection of her short films. Even better, you can download them. Shweet.

Other fascinating sound recordings:

John Cale (with The Velvet Underground)

Aw, the list goes on and on. Go check them all out.

A few fascinating films on Ubuweb:

Now how much would you pay? The answer: NOTHIN'! Now go waste some time, kids!

HAPPY 4TH, MUSIC GEEKS!

All American music from an All American boy: Tom Wilson!

For Scooter Polanski...

Mow that lawn, All American Boy
Rake those leaves, All American boy
Rake Those Leaves
And, oh, how you can ride a bike
brush your teeth
take a hike
brush them till they shine
wear braces to get them in a line

he bravely has a his tonsils out
He earns the badge of an Eagle Scout
In Sunday school he is devout
All American, all american, all american

Cook a meal, all american boy
get your sleep, all american boy
get your sleep
and oh, how you can jog so far
wipe your nose learn guitar
and for a smile sincere
have check-ups twice a year

he shines his shoes if they have a scuff
he turns his head if he has to cough
he never tears a fly's wings off
all american all american all american

Swim those laps, All-American boy
make that call, All-american boy
Make that call
And how you pay your bills on time
Write that song
Save a dime
sometimes take a loss
and don't forget to floss

He pays his rent, he pays his tax
he wins a hand with a pair of jacks
he eats his meals between his snacks
All American, all American, all American

buy the food, All american boy
Read a book, all american boy
Read a book
And oh, how clean you keep your clothes
comb your hair
strike a pose
sail into the wind
and don't be so thin skinned

And Oh how well you pay your dues
Dry your eyes
read the news
Write your friends tonight
Be careful what you bite
Let yourself be good
And don't do what you should
All American, All American, All American, All American boy

Have a great fourth of July, everybody!
