As I mentioned previously, Shyboy Tim and I have a collection of movie clips that we watch the afternoon before the 24 Hour Pledge Drive A-Go-Go in order to get us psyched up for the challenge ahead. I like the idea of sharing these with the group, so to speak, so you can gear up for the big day along with us. This particular clip is near and dear to me because it comes from one of my favorite music related films, Wattstax. This 1973 film contains soooooooo many amazing performances, in fact we might see another one show up as inspiration before next weeks marathon, but this musician steals the show. This is the one and only Johnnie Taylor singing "Jody's Got Your Girl and Gone".
Several years ago Stax records released the full show from where this smoking hot performance originated (Live at THe Summit Club). The liner notes explain that it was an all around difficult night. The musicians were not in sync with Johnnie Taylor, and you can actually hear Taylor hollering at them from time to time. If you are familiar with the original single of "Jody's Got Your Girl and Gone", it is recorded at a much slower groove. The video above is alot quicker. The musicians kicked it off fast and just never stopped. It is a beautiful mistake, because Johnnie Taylor just grabs on to that tempo and never looks back!
