FISH FRYE LIVE DURING THE MARATHON!

48 HOUR BAND FESTIVAL IN MANKATO!
Wednesday, March 30, 2011
GOOD... BAD... THE RADIO GODS HAVE THE GUN!

It's tradition that we roll out one of the most popular Shuffle Function activites TWICE during the Shuffle Function 24 Hour Pledge Drive A-Go-Go! It's the world series of random radio during the super bowl of the Shuffle Function calendar year.
At nine p.m. on Thursday and noon on Friday we wheel out Shelley's massive collection of old Ktel records. Each record is numbered, and then we randomly pull numbers out of an authentic magic hat. Then we flip a coin to determine which side we play (it's all vinyl, kids) and then roll a ten sided die from Shyboy Tim's magic bag of holding to determine the track. IT IS COMPLETELY RANDOM! We have no idea what the radio gods hold in store for us, so tune in for what is guaranteed to either be the best or worst radio you have ever heard!
On Record Store Day, Saturday April 16th, Shuffle Function will be doing the first ever in the wild Radio Roulette! We'll haul down a selection of Shelley's collection to Tune Town and play LIVE Radio Roulette during the early morning Radio Roulette activities! Celebrate independent record stores, get some cool Record Store Day exclusives, and help us play Radio Roulette! We've never played this outside the safety of the KMSU studios, so who knows what could happen?

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU CAN'T SLEEP (WHETHER YOU WANT TO OR NOT)

JANDEK: SOUNDS OF INSOMNIA
Two a.m. is the perfect time for exploring the mysterious world of Jandek and his music. For nearly 35 years Corwood Industries has been putting out a seemingly bottomless series of releases from the artist known only as Jandek (or THE REPRESENTATIVE). The music of Jandek can be as intriguing as it can be off-putting, and we will be diving into a huge pile of his output during this hour. You may never be what could be considered a Jandek fan, but you may find that this music is the perfect soundtrack for your insomnia.POST HOLIDAY EXTRAVAGANZA IV!

AN OPEN INVITATION
As I hinted in the last post, Shyboy Tim and I would like to invite all of you to join us for a game of Beatles Trivial Pursuit during the Shuffle Function 24 Hour Pledge Drive A-Go-Go. This is the equivalent of Wimbeldon for Music Geeks, the Stanley Cup of Fab Four Fanatics, and the Indy 500 of stereo and mono trivia games. We will start the game at midnight on April 7th during the marathon and everyone is welcome to join us. You can come alone or form a team - the more participants the better for us.

If I had all this posting to do over I would have reversed the order of events, but it is too late now. Scroll on down for a ton of info on some upcoming events that you are all invited to.I have yet to post something for the Mankato 48 Hour Band Festival. That is coming soon, but if you are on facebook please feel free to check out the event page here. RECORD STORE DAY - APRIL 16th

Vinyl is where it all began for Tim and I. Both of us grew up playing our parents 45 records, which we now each have in our own collections. Because of this, Record Store Day has become a holiday of sorts in Shuffle Function Land. This year Carl asked us to participate down at Tune Town and Tim came up with the perfect idea to mark Record Store Day - Shuffle Function Radio Roulette.
We won't be bringing all of my K-Tel records down to Tune Town, just enough to make it dangerous! We hope you can join us for the festivities, this is the first time that we play Shuffle Function Radio Roulette live in front of an audience. We will have more details about Record Store Day the closer we get to April 16th.
BONUS SOMETHING TO DO : GRIND-FU CINEMA

Shyboy Tim and I are big movie geeks too - and after staying awake for 24 hours of live radio we like to sit back, relax and watch some flicks. That is why we have held a bonus Grind-Fu Cinema the last few years after the Shuffle Function 24 Hour Pledge Drive A-Go-Go.
This year it is all about Steampunk Cowboy Musicals in Space.
Want a sneak peek? Here you go:
Stingray Sam
American Astronaut
SOMETHING TO DO FOR TWENTY-FOUR HOURS
This will be our ninth consecutive Shuffle Function Pledge Drive A-Go-Go, so at this point we have lost our amateur status. But please don't get me wrong - we are not experts in the field of staying awake and alert for 24 hours of live radio! This type of radio adventure is such a wild card - and that frightens the hell out of two folks who are self proclaimed control freaks. We have some great events planned for the Shuffle Function 24 Hour Pledge Drive A-Go-Go this year, and we will get into the details as we get closer and closer to go time.
Click on this link to hear a world record being made. In 2001 WFMU radio DJ Glen Jones was on the air for just over 100 hours! It isn't real pretty at the end and I can completely understand why. I get pretty out there after only 24 hours. Have a listen and see for yourselves.
STUFF TO DO : first suggestion

This Tuesday night you have an opportunity to hear MPR's Sasha Aslanian, coordinator the Youth Radio Series. This is a free lecture held Tuesday night 7 p.m. at the Ostrander Auditorium in the Student Union on campus. Last summer Dave Engen, host of KMSU's "Listen To Your Folks", and I had an opportunity to spend a week with a group of school kids at KMSU's Radio Camp. It was a first for the both of us, and a challenge to boot, but it has been one of the most rewarding experiences I have had in radio. Being able to pass along to a younger generation a love for community radio and an appreciation for all the work that goes in to that is priceless. I can't wait to hear Aslanian's take on Youth Radio, and I am particularly interested in hearing from some of her young reporters. To find out more about MPR's Youth Radio Series, follow this link. We hope to see you there radio lovers!!

YO LA TEGO ROCKS IT FOR FREE FORM RADIO TONIGHT ON WFMU

We play an awful lot of Yo La Tengo on Shuffle Function, and tonight you have an opportunity to hear them play live in the studios of WFMU. To help raise funds for the best station in the world, Yo La Tengo will be playing your requests. They play the requests regardless of whether or not they know the song - and that is where it gets pretty fun.
If you are hip to the world of technology, I highly reccomend that you get the free WFMU app. This allows you to stream the station live and you can also access their archived shows. It is essential for all music geeks and as I mentioned previously it is FREE! If I found it on iTunes than I am sure that you can.The Yo La Tengo event begins tonight at 8 pm Central Time and runs till at least 11 pm. They will also be streaming the event live on line here at the WFMU website. This is must see/hear radio folks.

We're bigtime movie geeks around these parts, and for movie geeks the ultimate video label is Criterion. For decades Criterion has been the uber fanatical video imprint, putting out remarkable films in remarkable quality with remarkable extras. Shelley and I go on Criterion binges a few time a year to stock up on our must see cinema. I just found out through BoingBoing that Criterion has a page of Top Ten Discs lists from some pretty high profile folks: Wes Anderson, Steve Buscemi, Guillermo del Toro, Ricky Jay, Richard Linklater, John Lurie... I could go on and on. Patton Oswalt, Paul Morrissey, D.A. Pennebaker, Sonic Youth, Adam Yauch... I shant go on and on. Just check out the list and see what you might be missing!

CRITERION TOP TEN LISTS
AS SEEN ON RADIO: STAIRWAY TO STARDOM!
The other day we played a clip of Michael Daniel Baez singing "You May Be Right" on the legendary NYC show Stairway To Stardom. There's no shortage of remarkable recordings from this show, and you can find them all over Youtube. Whatever these clips lack in talent, they more than make up in charm.
GOO! VISUAL PROOF OF HOLY ARCHIVES!

Oh man, you guys gotta go to rollingstones.com and look through their galleries. In addition to loads of photos posters, gear, and Keith, you'll find photos of the stones archives. There's master tapes, film reels, cassette tapes...
I passed out. Sorry. But go there and look at this bit of rock and roll amazingness. I have to believe that the very fact that they are acknowledging this stuff exists means that maybe... MAYBE... they will be putting something out with this material. Gasp...
