In 1982 a comedy debuted featuring some of the newest voices in alternative British comedy. As you can see in the photo below, many of those faces became international comedy legends, and at least one got work on the grounds of Hogwarts. The show was The Comic Strip Presents..., and for several seasons it presented short films that were innovative, edgy, hilarious, dry, and very British. And sometimes not funny. But they were always, at the very least, interesting.
The very first episode of The Comic Strip Presents... was entitled Five Go Made In Dorset, and it was a parody of a popular British series that followed a group of kids called The Famous Five. In the episode (seen below) we follow the adventures of Julian (Peter Richardson, creator of The Comic Strip Presents...), Dick (Adrian Edmondson), George (Dawn French), and Anne (Jennifer Saunders) as they ride bikes and solve crimes, all the while spouting outrageous racist and extreme right wing views that were part of the original Famous Five series.
1983 saw the return of The Famous Five in Five Go Mad On Mescalin. The Five go on another adventure and solve crimes, and this time around we find they are possibly Nazi sympathizers.
To mark the 30th anniversary of the series, The Comic Strips Presents... filmed an all new episode reuniting The Five in The Five Go To Rehab. We find out what has happened to the gang over the past three decades as they go on one last reluctant adventure for Dick's birthday.
Anyway... I've had a lot of time to kill today.

Today was an historic day on Shuffle Function. During the morning and night time show we played all of the new Grateful Dead album that Stuart suggested we buy on Black Friday Record Store Day to meet our obligation of his Springtime KMSU pledge. You can read the whole story here.
Stu joined us during the morning show for the epic 15 minute track of the album, and he shared with us an amazing story of life as a Dead Head. There is no way to make a long story short with this, it doesn't do it justice to summarize it with a few sentences, but if you heard Stu this morning than you are probably dying to see what the tape cassettes look like. Here you go!
By the way, the gentlemen in the Grateful Dead shirt is Stu. Every one of those tapes are from the sound board at a bunch of live Grateful Dead shows in the late 1970's.
A big thanks to Stuart for supporting KMSU and for being such a good sport. It is always a treat to meet our listeners, and this was hopefully a once in a lifetime event! We also want to thank Redd and Rusty for their Adult Themed Christmas Special this morning. Ann and Joe are perhaps better known as The Frye, and it is always a treat to have them in the studio.
Tomorrow is the end of the world according to the Mayans, and my Day Sponsorship as well. From 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.I will be at the station playing the final sets from a number of KMSU hosts. When all is said and done, and assuming the Mayans got the math wrong, you will hear from 19 DJs tomorrow. I have an idea of a running order for this big day, but keep in mind that things may change.
Right now here is how it is going to go down:
6 a.m. Shyboy Tim / Shuffle Function
6:30 a.m. Steve / Dreadbeat
7 a.m. Bob / Here There Be Dragons
7:30 a.m. Gary "Maverick Slim" / Cosmic Hour
8 a.m. Shelley / Shuffle Function
8:30 a.m. E Man and E Lars / 33 and 1/3
8:45 a.m. McArthur Park Sing - A - Long
come on up to the station to join us!
9 a.m. Bruce / Folk Scene
9:30 a. m. Dave E. / Listen To Your Folks
10 a.m. Guse / Embrace The Sound
10:30 a.m. Carl / Free Form Freakout
11:00 a.m. Dave P. / Free Form Freakout
11:30 a.m. Mark H. / Blues Before Monday
12 Noon Emily & Stu / Rascal DNA

Hope you can hear it all. Settle in for a great set list for the end times. Call in Apocalypse if you have to!

With The Stones ending their mini-anniversary tour, I thought it would be appropriate to post a couple of legendary documentaries. Both feature Mick Taylor, who made guest appearances at several of the concerts over the last month. The first is Gimme Shelter, and it's pretty intense. We showed it at the very first 12 Hour Film Festival a few years ago, and it left the crowd speechless. The second is the legendary unreleased Robert Frank film C**ksucker Blues, a film so scandalous that even The Stones decided they couldn't release it. Its reputation is greater than the final film, but it gives a great idea of how decadent the 72 tour of America was.

December 21st is our last day folks, according to the Mayans, and I am KMSU's Day Sponsor on that day. I asked a number of KMSU radio show hosts "What would you play for your final set if you knew that this was the end?", and that is what you will hear if you tune in between the hours of 6 a.m. and 2 p.m. December 21st. We had a great request come in from long time listener Michelle for that day, which also happens to be her birthday. She asked that we sing McArthur Park at the end of the morning show, and I cannot think of a better way to end what could be our last show ever.
You are all invited to join Shyboy Tim and I in the studio for the McArthur Park sing-a-long December 21st at 8:45 a.m. Bring along a musical instrument if you are so inclined. The bigger the crowd the better the song so grab all of your friends and family and drag them along as well. If you want to practice up before hand, here are some video selections to use.
Here is the master at work, Richard Harris -
And here is the master again, or is it?!
Plan your last day accordingly folks - you only get one shot at this. Don't say to yourself I will just join them in the Spring when they do it again during the Shuffle Function 24 Hour Pledge Drive A-Go-Go, because that might not happen!!
WHAT: MacArthur Park Sing-A-Long
WHEN: Friday December 21st at 8:45 a.m.
WHERE: KMSU STUDIO
WHO: All Of You
WHY: ask the Mayans
