No Orbs Here....

I didn't get to take a lot of pictures this morning during our Second Halloween festivities, but I did document the Houdini shrine we built for him in hopes of his making an appearance. Houdini was dedicated to debunking those who claimed to speak to the spirit world, but after his mother passed away he tried in vain to contact her. He made a pact with his wife that if he were to die, he would do everything in his power to reach out to her from the other side. If it could be done, the master escape artist was sure he would do it. Halloween was designated to be the day he would reach out, and for years and years seances were held in attempt to do so. All of them were unsuccessful.

As far as we know. nobody has ever tried to contact Houdini on Second Halloween, so we gave it a shot this morning. We left a microphone open for him - just in case he wanted to join the conversation. We also offered him his favorite food, "Farmer's Chop Suey".

We didn't hear a peep from Houdini this morning but we had a blast. Thanks to all of the trick or treaters who joined us in the studio - and for all of the great Second Halloween requests. Shyboy Tim has a bunch of photos that he will share soon, so check back for more.

UPDATE:  Here are Shyboy Tim's photos!  BEST.  SECOND HALLOWEEN.  EVER!

Radio hero Robyn didn't let Second Halloween pass her by!

Do spirits return?

Henry blows out Houdini's candle.

Thanks to all the Trick-Or-Treaters that stopped in to make this the best Second Halloween on record.  It's just a shame that it only rolls around every four years!  We didn't have any luck contacting Houdini, but there's always next Leap Year.

Cool side note:  Second Halloween was mentioned on somebody's Twitter feed!

Wednesday, February 29th
Six a.m. to eight a.m.
KMSU 89.7fm/KMSK 91.3fm/

Second Halloween only happens on February 29th, so you've been waiting four long years for your chance to celebrate it.  Your pals at Shuffle Function are up to the task, and we're gonna live it up big time!  We'll be in costume, we will have candy for trick or treating, and we'll be playing all of your favorite Second Halloween songs and requests.

This year, we're adding something new to our celebration...

This year we will be leaving a microphone open for the spirit of Harry Houdini, should he decide to grace us with his presence.  For many years his wife would hold a seance on Halloween to try and contact Harry's spirit, and these attempts were never successful.  COULD THIS BE THE YEAR THAT HARRY HOUDINI BREAKS THROUGH FROM THE SPIRIT WORLD?!!

Join us from six to eight a.m. on Wednesday, February 29th, as Shuffle Function celebrates SECOND HALLOWEEN!  It won't happen again for four years, so don't let this opportunity pass!

The fifth in a series highlighting  the seemingly endless pop culture crushes of Shyboy Tim.  In this installment:

Lee Meriwether, Eartha Kitt, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Anne Hathaway.  What do all these actresses have in common?  NONE OF THEIR CATWOMAN PERFORMANCES WILL EVER BE AS EPIC AS JULIE NEWMAR'S!

I think I learned more about sex from watching Julie Newmar on TVs Batman than I ever did on the playground.  That's not true, but it's pretty easy to understand just why Batman so easily fell under her spell.  Could it be that I developed my fascination with bad girls at such an early age from watching Batman after school?  Huh.  I never really thought about that before...  TO THE BAT PSYCHIATRIST!

So here's a whole bunch of Julie Newmar, one of the many loves of Shyboy Tim.

ON MARCH 15H @ 7:00pm!

The second half of Community Season Three returns!  We don't know if there is a Season Four in the works yet, but for now let's rejoice the return of this Thursday night Gem.

Because NBC is run by pinheads, there is a dark side to this.  When Community returns, Parks and Recreation will go on a FIVE WEEK HIATUS.  WTF NBC?  By the way, somebody should make WTF NBC shirts right now.

Anyway, please watch this show!  Our lives are filled with memories of too many legendary shows that met the axe.

The fourth in a series highlighting the seemingly endless pop culture crushes of Shyboy Tim.  In this installment:

I first saw Sue Galloway in the role of Sue Larouche-Van der Hout, a writer for The Girlie Show on 30 Rock.  She's usually spotted sitting around the writer's table, where she'll get the occasional line that steals a scene.  She has featured prominently in a couple of episodes, like when Tracy adds her to his entourage, or the one where we find out she's a notable psychic investigator in her homeland.

Also, she rocks out in a band called Stickerbook.

So here's a bunch of Sue Galloway, one of the many loves of Shyboy Tim.

It has been YEARS since Guitar Wolf has come anywhere near Minnesota.  Maybe ten years?  Eleven?  In any case, it has been way too long since roofs and ears have been blown out by these Japanese rock gods.  DO NOT MISS THIS OPPORTUNITY!  It's an 18+ show, and that room is small and built for maximum rock and roll buttobase jet rocking.  We're gonna be there, and we know a few other current and former KMSU folks will be joining us.  It's gonna be life changing.

Morrissey is re-releasing a remastered "Viva Hate" soon, with a special 10" picture disc release on Record Store Day (April 21) of a remix by Sparks of Suedehead!!

If Shyboy Tim doesn't list the "Dangerous Minds" website as one of his many loves soon, then I will. They are a goldmine of videos and pop culture, and after watching the concert footage I am about to share with you, I want to hug them and kiss them and name them George!! This is The Talking Heads at their zenith - 1980 in Rome. I have watched lots and lots of videos and footage of this band over the years, but this one just knocked my freakin' socks off. I have never seen a performance of 'Born Under Punches' before, and the lazy slow introduction to 'Cross-eyed And Painless' had me drooling. Enjoy for yourselves, and as "Dangerous Minds" suggests -  TURN IT UP!

Interviewer:  My eight year old could play that!
Sun Ra:  They could play it, but could they write it?

Here's a great BBC documentary about Sun Ra, appropriately titled "Brother From Another Planet."  Interviews with Arkestra veterans, as well as Archie Shepp, Thurston Moore, John Sinclair, Wayne Kramer and more.

Sun Ra isn't for everybody, but one way or another he'll blow your mind.

If you have been watching The Walking Dead this season, then this guy is a familiar face.

I have posted about Scott Wilson in the past so I won't get too gushy over him again. But I want to share with you the reason why he means the world to me - his portrayl of Captain Billy Cutshaw in The Ninth Configuration. This is written and directed by William Peter Blatty, of Exorcist fame (he even pops up in the film as Fromme).

I admit there are some scenes that have not aged well (the biker gang), but the fears of Cutshaw and his struggles with loneliness and faith hit me like a ton of bricks when I saw this some twenty years or so ago. It still does. So when I hear Herschell raise his voice at Rick in The Walking Dead, I also hear Cutshaw railing against Killer Caine about the "goodness" of man.

Enjoy - this movie isn't for everyone but it is near and dear to my heart. Let me know what you think,

Thanks to Dangerous Minds for pointing the way again!  Here's the complete Space Is The Place, featuring Sun Ra and his Arkestra.  Oh hell yes...

The third in a series highlighting the seemingly endless pop culture crushes of Shyboy Tim.   In this installment:

How can somebody not be in love with Diane Keaton?  She's so funny and quirky, intelligent and bashful.  And that amazing smile, too.  PLUS, she was in a film (although regrettable) with LAUREN GRAHAM!  Oh, and I guess there were all those amazing Woody Allen films.

Anyway, Diane Keaton is an uber crush, and she just gets better with time.  She can wear the hell out of a pair of librarian glasses.

So here's a bunch of Diane Keaton, one of the many loves of Shyboy Tim.

This year is a leap year, and that can mean only one thing:  SECOND HALLOWEEN!  That's right!  On February 29th we're celebrating second halloween!  It comes around every four years, so get into it!  We'll have candy for trick-or-treating, and we'll be playing all your favorite Second Halloween music.

Tune in for this Second Halloween SPOOKTACULAR (eye roll) from six to eight in the morning CST on KMSU 89.7fm/KMSK 91.3fm, or online at!

This coming Tuesday, February 14th, we're featuring the music of Francoise Hardy, one of the many loves of Shyboy Tim, and a perfect candidate for embodying the spirit of Valentimes Day (if you're into that sort of thing). Tune in for loads of dreamy french singing and horribly mangled french pronunciation!

Werner Herzog on Chickens from Tom Streithorst on Vimeo.

If you woke up today saying "I WISH I COULD SEE A FOUR HOUR BOB DYLAN MOVIE RIGHT NOW", then you are in for a treat.  Dangerous Minds just pointed the way to Renaldo and Clara on youtube.  If you've never seen this movie, then... well, I can't say you are in for a treat.  It feels like a four hour movie.  But there's some great live footage here from the Rolling Thunder Review tour.

This copy is much better quality than the bootleg I picked up, so I might end up watching it again.

In case you missed this last Friday - this scene from Portlandia was made for music geeks.

I love the subtle Phil Collins slam!! On Groundhogs Day we mentioned a couple of times a new show called "Doomsday Preppers" which is airing on the Nat Geo Channel. I have watched the first episode, and don't know what to think. I am fascinated and horrified at the same time, so it may take some time to determine how exactly I feel about this one. If you have some time on your hands, maybe you can see how you feel about it.

here is part one:

here is part two:

here is part three:

and part four:

I am not overly fond of how they handle the "expert opinion" at the end of each segment, but I am intrigued at the amount of time and effort each family has spent thinking about these doomsday scenarios. I have always been a fan of do-it-yourself, be it Foxfire books, making your own bread, or living off the grid, so I admire their efforts in that regard. But where it gets creepy for me is when they show kids putting on gas masks or camping out in the bunkers for a weekend getaway. How do you candy coat the end times for kids? As someone who grew up scared to death of nuclear winter and Reagan's finger on the trigger, I don't know if you can. So that is where I question shows like this. There may be great information here - no doubt, but I can't help but think that if my neices saw a show like this it would scare the crap out of them. I'll have to see what I think after watching the second episode.

Let's end on a happy note, okay. Tonight is the second new episode of Absolutely Fabulous and I for one can't wait to see it! If you have wasted this much time already, why not waste a bit more? This episode has THE BEATLES-ELTON JOHN-APPLE RECORDS-PATSY DANCING JAGGER and YOKO!! and it made me laugh out loud more times than I can count.

The second new episode is supposed to be on teh LOGO channel tonight at 9:30 central time - fingers crossed!!

The second in a series chronicling Shyboy Tim's seemingly endless list of pop culture crushes.  In this edition:

You might not know her name, but my guess is that you've seen her steal scenes in quite a few films and TV shows.  I first saw her as Mel the super fan on Flight Of The Conchords.  I never found the show to be that funny, but I always found Kristen hilarious on that show.

You'll probably find a lot of funny women in this series, by the way.  Funny women are like kryptonite.

So here's a bunch of Kristen Schaal, one of the many loves of Shyboy Tim.
