Levon Helm passed away after a long battle with cancer yesterday.  He was 71.

"Levon Helm passed peacefully this afternoon.  He was surrounded by family, friends and bandmates and will be remembered by all he touched as a beautiful musician and a beautiful soul."

I grew up hearing songs like "Up On Cripple Creek" and "The Weight" on the radio and loved them from the get go, but I really fell hard for them after watching the film "The Last Waltz". As Tim said on the show this morning, you saw these guys who looked like they'd just stepped out of the Dust Bowl and onto the stage. Decked out in hats and their Sunday best suits they seemed to be from a different era, but one that you wished to be a part of. It is impossible for me to hear their voices and not join in. That was their magic, and Levon Helm in his quiet way was the center of it.
