FREE! FREE! FREE! FREE! FREE!
Join us for a kick-ass half day of movies! Grind-Fu Cinema presents a FREE twelve hour film marathon filled with choirs, zombies, shotguns, buckets of blood, lone gunmen and a special purpose. There is nothing the Grind-Fu gang loves more than spending loads of time in a theater with a great crowd watching a schedule of weird and hilarious movies, so you need to join us if this is your idea of kicks!
It's near impossible to choose a favorite in this lineup, as it is composed of several titles that have been on our wishlist since the very beginning. If you are looking for pointers we'll do what we can, but your best bet would be to bring a ton of snacks, a blanket, and a bunch of friends and then settle in for the entire schedule. You're not gonna want to miss a minute. Grind-Fu crowds have been some of the best crowds we've ever watched films with, and the stuff in this lineup is programmed for maximum reaction.
Here's the schedule (all start times are approximate):
NOON - DONDERO A CAPPELLA CHOIR CONCERT HIGHLIGHTS
This is one that we ran last season and it got a tremendous reaction. We featured the Dondero A Cappella Choir and Pop Concert Instruments on our 10th anniversary show, and ran an extensive interview with Rick Hartsoe, the man behind these wonderful concerts out of Royal Oak, Michigan. An unexpected bonus of our interview with Rick was that he loaned us his complete video archive of several years worth of these concerts, and from that we were able to assemble a tribute that is filled with loads of unexpected joy and humor and emotion. It even became an audience participation show!
1:30 - MANKATO: CASEFILE 56001 (Locally produced Zombie short film)
Sometimes people will attempt a short film and it will fall flat. It'll have humor or moments that really only appeal to them as an inside joke, and the work will simply not... erm... work. That's not the case with Mankato: Casefile 56001. This short film has all the feel of folks that said "Hey, let's make a movie!" but with some really fun moments. It was a crowd pleaser the last time we ran it, and we really think you guys will get a kick out of it. It's the pregame for...
1:50 - PATHOGEN (written and directed by a 12 year old from Texas)
It'd be easy to dismiss a film that is described as being made by a 12 year old from Texas, but Pathogen is a lot of fun. It's an honest to goodness feature film directed by Austin native Emily Hagins, a girl that was born to be a film maker. Her latest feature, My Sucky Teenage Romance, was just picked up for distribution, and she's only just turned 18. Not too shabby. Pathogen is ambitious and funny and a good time.
3:10 - DUCK SOUP
One of our favorite Marx Brothers films, and still gut-bustingly funny after EIGHTY YEARS! If you have never seen a Marx Brothers film, then this is the perfect opportunity. It's gonna be a blast watching some of the most anarchic humor ever committed to film with a Grind-Fu audience. It's amazing, but after eight decades this film still manages to point out the hypocrisy and insanity of politics and war. Amazing and a little depressing that so little has changed. One hell of a funny film.
4:35 - A BUCKET OF BLOOD
A Roger Corman production filled with all the dark humor and murder you'd expect from such a thing. Dick Miller is great as the bumbling busboy that just wants to be accepted by the cool beatnik crowd. He gets the praise he wants when he discovers a dark secret for creating great sculpture. We're saying this for everything, it seems, but this is a fun film!
5:00 - INTERMISSION
We'll take a 45 minute break to stretch or get food or see a man about a horse. During this time we'll run lots of short films and oddball things that were laying around the Grind-Fu projection booth.
5:45 - THE JERK
Steve Martin's first film, and one that still stands out as a favorite from his career. Martin plays Navin Johnson, a guy that has never fit in. He ventures out into the big world to make his mark and find his special purpose. Hilarity ensues.
7:15 - HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN
The Grind-Fu gang all had the same reaction when they saw this movie: THIS WAS MADE FOR GRIND-FU CINEMA! Hobo With A Shotgun is full of gore and violence and humor, and it is over the top in every single way. A blood splattered revenge epic, starring Rutger Hauer as a Hobo. He has a shotgun.
9:25 - TAXI DRIVER
We've wanted to show this since the beginning, and the stars have finally alligned. Taxi Driver is a dark masterpiece from Martin Scorsese, starring Robert DeNiro in the title role. This is Shyboy Tim's favorite Scorsese film, as well as his go-to insomnia film. The tone of Taxi Driver could be summed up by this line from DeNiro's Travis Bickel: Someday a real rain will come and wash the scum from the streets.
Please do your own research regarding ratings and content. We'll answer any questions you may have, but many of these films are inappropriate for children. The most family friendly titles of the bunch would be the Dondero A Cappella Choir Highlights and Duck Soup. You're on your own with everything else.
It's gonna be a great day of film, and we hope you'll join us. Drop us a line at email@example.com with any inquiries.
