SHUFFLE FUNCTION 24 HOUR PLEDGE DRIVE A-GO-GO 2012!

THE SHUFFLE FUNCTION 24
HOUR PLEDGE DRIVE A-GO-GO!

24 HOURS OF TWO FISTED SLEEP DEPRIVED
PUNCH DRUNK FREE FORM ROCK AND ROLL!

Starts:  Thursday, April 26th @ 6pm
Ends:  Friday, April 27th @ 6pm

The Spring Pledge Drive starts on Wednesday, April 25th.  Pledge early and pledge often.  If you're one for waiting, though, Shuffle Function will be LIVE ON THE AIR FOR 24 STRAIGHT HOURS beginning Thursday, April 26th @ 6pm!  There's no sleep for the wicked or radio hosts, as we survive only on the basic human needs of caffeine, rock and roll, and your pledges to KMSU.  Sleep is for suckers and commercial radio, kids.

This year marks TEN YEARS that we've been performing this grandly stupid act of radio pledge drivery, and we still never know what to expect.  Some years are a breeze, and some years are a disaster right out of the gate.  The one thing that always gives us a shot in the arm and inspires us is when you guys call and give generously to the station.  It means the world to us.  For reals.

We're going to have lots of stuff planned, and lots of amazing swag that will be available.  But beyond the big marathon, we have...

RECORD STORE DAY GRIND-FU!

RECORD STORE DAY JUST GOT BIGGER!

Grind-Fu Cinema Presents
JANDEK ON CORWOOD
and VINYLMANIA!

RECORD STORE DAY
Saturday, April 21st @ 7:00pm
Wiecking 220 Auditorium
Minnesota State University, Mankato

FREE!  FREE!  FREE!  FREE!

Record Store Day is already like Second Christmas to us.  It's a great day to get new music, as well as support your Mom and Pop Record Shop.  Shuffle Function will be at Tune Town playing Shuffle Function Radio Roulette LIVE in the store, providing the awesome/regrettable soundtrack to this celebratory day.

But now... Record Store Day just got bigger.  We are having a special Record Store Day Grind-Fu Double feature that has been assembled especially for the music geeks in the audience.  That evening we will be screening Jandek On Corwood, as well as VINYLMANIA: When Life Runs At 33 Revolutions Per Minute.

JANDEK ON CORWOOD (2003)

Jandek On Corwood is a gateway documentary.  It sucked me into the world of Jandek, at which point I went out and bought everything that was ever released on Corwood.  That number has grown by about 20 titles in only 9 years, and I've long since given up on trying to keep up.  But the music grabbed hold of me, and now we feature him during every Shuffle Function 24 Hour Pledge Drive A Go Go.  This is a haunting and mysterious film, and it will probably leave you with more questions than before you saw it, but that's just because you'll want to know even more.

 VINYLMANIA (2011)

What could be more appropriate for Record Store Day than a documentary about record collectors?  A documentary about record collectors being shown on the same night as Jandek On Corwood, that's what!

GRIND-FU CINEMA IS FREE!

CHECK IT OUT! WITH DR. STEVE BRULE: SEASON TWO

The first two episodes of Check It Out Season Two have only just aired, but they have set a pretty dark tone for the rest of the season. Yeesh. CHECK IT OUT!

WHAT MOVIE COULD YOU ACTUALLY STAND TO BE IN WITH ROBIN WILLIAMS?

So... what movie could you actually stand to be in with Robin Williams?  This was the question posed this morning on the show.  Shelley and I decided that anything we would be in would be because of the other people involved, like Popeye, because of Robert Altman, or The Fisher King, because you could hang out with Terry Gilliam and Jeff Bridges.

In a quest to find a better answer to the question, I went to IMDB to check out his resume.  It was then that I discovered an entry for Mork and Mindy/Laverne and Shirley/The Fonz hour, an animated saturday morning cartoon I had never heard of.  The first half was Mork and Mindy as teens, and the second was actually the second season of ANOTHER animated series I had never heard of, called Laverne and Shirley In The Army.

One youtube search later, and we have video proof that Laverne and Shirley In The Army existed.  It was basically Private Benjamin, but with an anthropomorphic pig military officer (voiced by TVs Ron Palillo).  How could you possibly go wrong?

NEW TENACIOUS D!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY RUFUS THOMAS

I went on a Rufus Thomas bender this morning to mark his birthday, and once again I implored you to watch Wattstax. He steals the show - as does so many of the performers in the show - but you can see some of it for yourself! Here is Rufus Thomas performing live at Wattstax "Breakdown" and "The Funky Chicken".

WARNING: CLEAR OUT THE FURNITURE AND SURROUNDING OBJECTS. YOU ARE GOING TO NEED TO DANCE!!

And if that wasn't enough to wet your whistle, then how about this!! Johnnie Taylor sings "Jody's Got Your Girl And Gone".

I   KNOW,  RIGHT?!!

This isn't the full version of the song that I played on the show this morning - it is over 9 minutes long -but you can get a taste of how devastating he is!! Okay - I'll let you go and add Wattstax to your cue or order it on-line now.

SPINAL TAP ON SNL

Around the time that This Is Spinal Tap hit the theaters, Spinal Tap made their national television debut on Saturday Night Live.  The episode, hosted by Barry Bostwick, featured live performances of Big Bottom and the previously unreleased Christmas With The Devil.  Sadly, neither performance is archived on the SNL website, and youtube has been a bust.  SNL does have a short interview with the band on the website, and it's pretty funny stuff.

THE FACES TO REUNITE!

The Faces will play together for the first time in 19 years at the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony this April!  I can't get enough of The Faces lately.  They were a group I had always heard of when I was a kid, but didn't really dig into until the last ten years or so.  If you like The Stones, then it is an easy transition.  They're kind of like the little brothers of The Stones, I guess, and it doesn't hurt that Ron Wood was in the group.

Another thing to note about The Faces, if you are new to them, is the vocal amazingness of Rod Stewart.  It's easy to dismiss him as a purveyor of oldies albums and Do Ya Think I'm Sexy-type songs, but the dude can wail.  Like, REALLY WAIL.  If you've been dismissing Rod for years, give The Faces a listen.  He's rocking some serious pipes.

Here's some favorites from The Faces, as well as a 40+ minutes performance.  Get ready to become a fan.

UPCOMING MOVIE APPOINTMENTS

There's a lot of great movie possibilities in the near future for anybody that is film minded and doesn't mind the occasional road trip.  First off, let me direct you to the photo at the beginning of this post, because...

According to somebody that posted on the Vali-Hi Facebook, they are tentatively planning to open on Saturday, April 7th.  If you have never been to a drive-in, then the Vali-Hi is a great place to go for your first drive-in experience.  They get everything right, and you get three first run movies for the price of one.  Plan on a late evening, as the movies don't start until sunset, but you will not regret it.  The Vali-Hi is a fantastic movie experience.

Wednesday, March 28th - Apocalypse Now
As part of the Minneapolis Landmark Theatres Obsession Film Series, they are screening Apocalypse Now at The Lagoon.  It looks like it's the original version, too, and not the Redux.  Possibly the greatest Vietnam film ever made.

April through May - Alfred Hitchcock Series
Hitchcock is always great, but it's a special thing to see him on the big screen.  The Trylon and The Riverview are sharing the responsibilities for the screenings.  Here's the schedule:

April 16th - To Catch A Thief (Riverview)
April 23rd - Strangers On A Train (Riverview)
April 30th - Rebecca (Riverview)
May 4th-6th - Saboteur/Torn Curtain Double Feature (The Trylon)
May 7th - Spellbound (The Trylon)
May 14th - Frenzy (The Trylon)

Sports Movies at The Trylon
April 13th-15th - Rocky/Raging Bull Double Feature
April 20th-22nd - Bad News Bears/Slapshot Double Feature
April 27th-29th - Hoosiers/Rudy Double Feature

Beginning March 30th at The Lagoon - The Raid!

The Raid is already being called the greatest action movie ever made, and every review I've read has been breathlessly enthusiastic.  Put his film on your shortlist.

Beginning April 6th for one week only - The Ballad Of Genesis and Lady Jaye

The epic love story of Genesis P-Orridge and Lady Jaye, and their quest to look exactly the same.  The trailer looks pretty emotional, and blurs the line between love and art.

That's about all I'm coming up with this morning, but it should keep you busy for a while.  HAVE A GREAT TIME AT THE MOVIES!

Shyboy

P.S.:  Thursday night at six p.m. we are announcing the dates for the Shuffle Function 24 Hour Pledge Drive A-Go-Go, PLUS A SPECIAL POST MARATHON GRIND-FU!  The lineup is fantastic, so tune into Shuffle Function: Unbound for more information!

YACHT ROCK: THE COMPLETE SERIES!

Yacht Rock.  That smooth sailing sound, often characterized by the use of yachts on album covers.  Loggins & Messina, The Doobie Brothers, Steely Dan, Michael "Silver Fox" McDonald... all of them masters of the Yacht Rock genre.  Wouldn't it be great if the story of the smoothest music to ever hit the airwaves could be told?

WELL, IT HAS!  Get ready for the shockingly obscene untold story of YACHT ROCK, hosted by Hollywood Steve.  This twelve part series will make you laugh and cry, but mostly laugh.  It also reveals the universal truth:  Jimmy Buffet is mellow but not smooth, and he's kind of shitty.

Give yourself an hour to watch the entire series, and then give yourself another hour to rewatch it.  It's just that awesome.

GARTH MARENGHI'S DARK PLACE (or why I sold my soul to Matt Berry)

This isn't a new show, but you've wasted your life if you haven't already seen it.  Garth Marenghi's Dark Place aired on the BBC in 2004.  The entire run wasonly six glorious episodes, but it became one of those shows that everybody tells you to watch and you are forced to buy import DVDs and then you can't play them because they are region 2 discs and your player can only play region 1.  One of those shows.

THANKS, INTERWEBS!  Here's three episodes from Adult Swim.  If you aren't already a Matt Berry fan, this will seal the deal.

BOB ODENKIRK ALERT!

Hey!  There's a great show on adultswim.com that's from Bob Odenkirk (Mr. Show, Breaking Bad).  This might be the ONLY episode, but maybe if we all band together and watch it we'll get more!

LET'S DO THIS!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, VIV!

Happy birthday, Viv Stanshall!

To celebrate, watch this great BBC documentary that came out in 1995 as a tribute following his death.  It's hosted by John Peel, so it's got that going for it, which is nice.

And for the sake of being completists, here's the clip where most people I know first saw The Bonzos.

THE LAST DAYS OF TINY TIM

I'm a fan of Art Chantry on Facebook, and lately he's been posting a lot of great music clips.  One that he posted today was of Tiny Tim on The Ed Sullivan Show performing Earth Angel with an all girl band.  This led me to a youtube search, where I uncovered this short film by Max "Bunny" Sparber, who is writing a play about Tiny Tim's life.  It's a sad story, but pretty interesting.

Here are a few clips of Tiny Tim doing what he loved most.

TINA FEY AND THE SECOND CITY: THE EARLY YEARS

Here's an interesting documentary about Second City that was filmed long before Tina Fey and Rachel Dratch hit Saturday Night live.  You can see them, as well as several other familiar faces from 30 Rock, performing in this particular version of the Second City cast.

Sorry about the four part youtube thing.  That's life.

THE MANY LOVES OF SHYBOY TIM #4 REVISITED

Here's an interesting article about how Sue Galloway, Many Love #4, turned what was essentially a background player role on 30 Rock into a fleshed out featured character on the show.

The Many Loves of Shyboy Tim will be going on indefinite hiatus, as the busy season has hit for Shuffle Function.  There are marathons to prep, Grind-Fu Cinemas to program, shirts to design, my wife to murder, and Guilder to frame for it.  I'm swamped!

Yours,
Shyboy

THE MANY FOOD LOVES OF SHYBOY TIM # 1 (AS TOLD BY HIS CO-HOST SHELLEY)

If the title of this post hasn't made things crystal clear yet - I just want you all to know that Shyboy Tim did not write this. I did. And to be honest with you, I am not going to write much. I am going to let the pictures do the talking for me.
On Friday morning, courtesy of the gift bag that Fish Frye gave us, we learned that one of the many food loves of Shyboy Tim is SOUR CREAM. He ate it with donut holes and then he ate it with a chocolate covered Peep. But don't take my word for it - you can see for yourself below.

Thanks to Ann and Joe for making Shyboy a happy boy too!

THE WALKING DEAD - MY BEST GUESS SPOILER ALERT FOR THE SEASON FINALE

Sunday night is the end of season two of The Walking Dead, and I fear that a blood bath is what's in store for us. If you have a look at the cast picture above, we have already lost some key players. It began with the discovery of  Zombie Sophia, daughter of Carol and object of half the seasons many searches. In the first show of season two she fled from the main group as several walkers pursued her into the surrounding woods. Rick was fast on her heels, but as we all know, to no avail. Sophie was already dead and shambling around in Hershel's barn.

Another early, and shocking crucial death was Otis. He was a new addition to the cast, having accidentally shot Carl (back when I actually cared about Carl). Lacking the medical provisions to save Carl, Otis agreed to join Shane on a mission to town in an attempt to find the supplies necessary to save Carl's life. We all knew that Shane was pretty shady, but what he did to Otis was a red flag. Wherever Carl or Lori were concerned, Shane was going to do whatever it took to save them. That meant shooting Otis and leaving him as a snack distraction to make good his escape.

There have been several close shaves since the season started, but a couple of weeks ago we lost the voice of reason and humanity in the group, Dale. Many saw this coming, and even I thought that Dale would end up being Shane's second victim, but I was wrong. Just when I thought that the biggest enemy the group now had was other members and survivors, Dale gets killed by a walker. After he'd spent the day pleading to save the life of an outsider in the end he was the one to die in a mercy killing at the hands of the group (Daryl).

And then in last week's episode, courtesy of Lori who gave Shane the one chance in hell that he needed to think he could get her and Carl back, we saw Rick kill Shane. And then we saw Carl kill Shane again. It was a shocker to say the least. Having read the Walking Dead Compendium Volume One, I knew that Rick's character would survive - in the graphic novels, Shane didn't even make it out of Atlanta. But I just didn't see this kind of confrontation happening - and when Rick screamed out in pain and fear "This isn't who I am!" it chilled me to the bone.

As the end of the "Better Angels" episode showed, Hershel's farm is about to be over run by walkers. In the distance we see hundreds of zombies ambling their way towards the group, having been alerted by the noise of Carl shooting Shane. Tomorrow night is the last episode of season two, and I think the last time that we will see may of the survivors that we have come to know and love (or hate).

Here are my predictions for who won't make it to season three of The Walking Dead.

Even though I am familiar with how the book ended this portion of the story, that doesn't mean anything. The TV series has strayed far away from the original storyline, and so I am simply going with my zombie gut on this one folks. SO BUCKLE UP - THIS IS ABOUT TO GET MESSY.

T-DOG, PATRICIA, BETH, JIMMY

This is a no brainer. The last three have only been with the show since the group arrived at Hershel's farm and they should have all been wearing Security Red Shirts from Star Trek since day one. I add T-Dog to this list because when I saw him a few weeks ago standing in the background I'd actually forgotten that he was still in the show! I think he has been background fodder all along, and so he will not make it to season three.

ANDREA

At first I felt sorry for her, having lost her sister back in Atlanta. But then she started to flake out with Dale and got gun happy. She shot Daryl for goodness sakes!! But I really lost any respect for her after she told a suicidal Beth (Hershel's daughter) to essentially "Sh*t or get off the pot". Once she finds out that Shane is dead she will flip out, but given that the walkers are fast approaching, it doesn't really matter. I think that Andrea will be swarmed by zombies and will take things into her own hands. An ironic ending to say the least.

CAROL AND DARYL

I hate to say that Carol is an obvious pick, but after losing Sophia, she is no longer really essential to the story. But it saddens me to add Daryl's name to this list. If it weren't because of his feelings for Carol he would have left the group long ago. Daryl was the redneck hillbilly that worked his way into our hearts, and I am afraid that he will die in the season finale trying to save Carol's life. See! I am already talking about him in the past tense! I hope that I am wrong about this, believe me. But the zombie gut is strong with this one.

GLENN, MAGGIE and HERSHEL

Oh boy does it hurt me to say this, because it has been a treat to watch Scott Wilson every week play Hershel, but I am afraid he is the Captain that goes down with the ship. In the preview for the finale he says as much, when he says "I'm not leaving my farm". We know that Hershel has accepted Glenn into the family as Maggie's boyfriend and I think that he will sacrifice himself for them in some way. It may be that Glenn and Maggie escape, Shyboy Tim thinks they will, but in the end I think that Maggie won't be able to leave her father behind and Glenn will stay to protect her. This will be their downfall.

LORI

As you can tell, I am pretty much gutting the entire cast. In the end I think it will just be Rick and Carl that make it away from all the walkers into season three. Lori has never been my favorite, and after her "I just want to thank you for all you did for me and Carl" talk with Shane last week I am not sad to see her go. As much as Carl has annoyed me in the last few episodes - popping up where he has no right to be - I think that perhaps she will die trying to protect him. Maybe Rick will be given a Sophie's Choice between the two and Lori will make his decision easier. Maybe when she finds out that Shane is dead we will learn that Lori loved Shane more in the end and doesn't want to be with Rick after all? I don't know how this story arc will end, other than Lori is toast.

In the end I think we will be back where we all started - with Rick. This time he will have his son with him. There will be hints of what is to come - namely the introduction of The Governor - but we may all need the break between seasons to recover from all this death. I could be drastically wrong about my predictions, and in the case of Hershel, Daryl and Glenn I hope that I am, but we won't know until tomorrow night. SHIRTLESS DUKE

DAN HARMON: THE EARLY YEARS

Community returns tonight after a brutal mid season hiatus.  Hopefully its absence from the Thursday night lineup has created an unbearable sense of longing, and hopefully that will translate into crazy boffo ratings.  If only Parks and Rec was in the lineup, too.  Then a balance would be restored to the force.

Anyway, if you are among the reasonable, then Community is one of your favorite shows.  But long long long LONG before Community there was Channel 101.  What is Channel 101?  I'm glad you asked, you.  Channel 101 is a website that shows short episodic web series, many of which are produced by Channel 101 viewers.  Channel 101 was co-founded by Dan Harmon, who also... YEAH, YOU GOT IT!  DAN HARMON CREATED COMMUNITY!

So, in preparation for Community's triumphant return, let's take a look at DAN HARMON:  THE EARLY YEARS!

One Channel 101 series that I watched (other than Yacht Rock, which is an entirely different post) was Computerman.  Computerman was written by Dan Harmon and Jack Black, and stars both.  Dan Harmon plays a McDonalds webmaster that creates an anthropomorphic computer, played by Jack Black.  Also, the computer is created when Dan Harmon's character bleeds on the keyboard.  Also, they end up on the run from the government.  Also, the series was very cheaply produced, as you'll notice.  STILL, they made something.  That counts for something.

Dan Harmon was also behind a few other Channel 101 series. Honestly, some of them look like they were made during a drunken night with friends.

But... before Channel 101, there was HEAT VISION AND JACK! Dan Harmon co-wrote and executive produced this legendary Fox pilot that was never picked up as a series. So good. Starring Jack Black, Owen Wilson, and Ron Silver.

KNOWLEDGE IS POWER! For real.

NICK DRAKE: A SKIN TOO FEW

I posted this a few months ago as a multi-part youtube thing, but Dangerous Minds just posted this documentary as one big uninterrupted chunk of awesome. If you are a Nick Drake fan, then you need to watch this. As with all things Nick Drake, it is both wonderful and sad, but it will make you appreciate him even more.

RECORD STORE DAY 2012 IS COMING!

OHMANOHMAN!  Record Store Day is right around the corner!  Saturday, April 21st is Record Store Day, also known as Second Christmas (not to be confused with Second Record Store Day on Black Friday, which is Third Christmas... it's all very confusing).

Record Store Day is basically and orgy of record collector music geekness, where you can go out and get lots of amazing limited release music from amazing artists, AND support your local Mom and Pop Record Store.  EVERYONE BENEFITS ON THIS DAY!

Tune Town is your connection in Mankato, and we know that Carl has a bunch of stuff planned for the day.  One thing going on is that Shuffle Function will once again be playing Radio Roulette LIVE for the second time ever.  Stop into the store and pick a number to provide the soundtrack for fists and elbows record store shopping experience.  It was a ton of fun last year, and we're hoping it will be even better in 2012.  Plus, if the Mayans were right, this could be your last chance EVER to play it  AND get kick ass Record Store releases!

RECORD STORE DAY 2012
Saturday, April 21st
Mankato location:  TUNE TOWN!
630 North Riverfront Drive, Mankato, MN
