MANKATO SATURDAY COVER ART CONTEST

I have always been attracted to the cover art of Jandek's releases. They are diverse in their range of subjects - buildings, nature, furniture, instruments, landscapes just to name a few. But the Representitive of Corwood Industries himself is often pictured, offering us a rare glimpse into his world. I have spent hours looking over the cover art and imagining elaborate back stories for each.

We have been holding Jandek Study Group meetings for months now and have created six radio specials devoted to Jandek's varied discography that have been airing every Friday night in preparation for the show - but we wanted you all to get involved visually with his music as well. After Jandek performs live he often times will release a recording of it, typically titling the albums using the name of the town he played and the night of the show. Four or five years from now a MANKATO SATURDAY Jandek album may be released.

What do you think it will look like?

Grab your camera and start looking a bit closer at the world around you. Shyboy Tim and I know that we have some very creative listeners out there and we want to see what you come up with. We challenge you to take a photo that you feel is perfect for the Mankato Saturday album and send it to us. We will post them on the blog, and three submissions will be chosen as winners. They will win Shuffle Function t-shirts and Jandek CDs. The deadline is Thursday October 18th and the winners will be announced during the morning show on October 19th. One entry per person please, and please note that this is just us having fun with the upcoming performance - by no means will these photos be utilized by Corwood Industries.

Here is a photo I took recently in Mankato. When I saw this couch I immediately thought "Jandek Cover!"
We will be mentioning this a lot on the radio show, but if you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact us. Send your photos and questions to us at shufflefunction@hotmil.com . Beginning tomorrow October 1st I will also be posting daily as we count down to Halloween, so be sure to check back daily for that and Mankato Saturday submissions.

Good Luck!

Shelley

TAKE MY MONEY, NUMERO GROUP!

We've been preaching the gospel of Numero for years now.  With each release they put out, Numero Group gives tons and tons of love to the failed and forgotten.  They unearth gems that were neglected when they were released, that were instantly obscure, and they give them the respect and love that they never ever had.  Love that they might never have had if it wasn't for an amazing record label like Numero.

Spin Magazine followed the Numero guys around Louisiana while they went on a trip trying to hook up with some of these forgotten musicians, and the article really details how much work goes into any one of their releases.  There's dead end after dead end, and loads of lost opportunities along the way.  When the work pays off, though, it really pays off, and the end result is always something wonderful.

Read this article and know exactly why I began accumulating everything I can find from the label.  I pick up their releases on reputation alone, because I know that their taste is impeccable and what they do is more than simply churning out an oldies collection.  They are curators and historians.  Numero friggin' rules.

Shyboy

READ THE SPIN ARTICLE!
This article really gets into how much work these guys put into each relase.

READ THE NUMERO GROUP BLOG!
This is where they promote upcoming releases, as well as torture vinyl geeks and music fanatics with teasers about what kind of magic they are whipping up.  It's a slippery slope, gang.

BUY AMAZING NUMERO GROUP STUFF!
Browse all their wares, get their shirts, break the bank.  Sometimes they will have website bonus records, too.  You can get the forthcoming Numero Omnibus release on this site.  They are only producing 1500 of these, and the first 500 preorders get a bonus single.  DAMN YOU, NUMERO GROUP!

FREE SCREENING OF JANDEK ON CORWOOD OCTOBER 13th

On Saturday October 13th at the Wiecking 220 Auditorium on the Campus of Minnesota State University Mankato we will be screening Jandek On Corwood. This falls exactly one week before Jandek himself performs live in Mankato. If you have yet to see this documentary, then I cannot stress enough how important it is that you do. NONE OF YOUR QUESTIONS WILL BE ANSWERED - you will only have more. But you will be hooked. The story of Jandek is intriguing, and Jandek On Corwood features a number of rock critics and Jandek fans that manage to summarize completely that which is undeniably a mystery and remains so.

Jandek will be playing in Minnesota for the first time on October 20th, and we have been doing our best to bring everyone on board and up to speed with Jandek's discography and mystique. We have held a number of Jandek Study Groups where we have listened to complete albums. We have been airing one hour radio specials every Friday night at midnight called Jandek Study Group Overnight with interviews and special music as well. This documentary is another great opportunity to dive into the world of Jandek - and we encourage you to do just that.

Jandek tickets are still available  - and if you get them before October 16th you can save yourself a five spot. Follow this link to the website where you can purchase them. If you have any questions about this event or Jandek's performance don't hesitate to drop us an email at: shufflefunction@hotmail.com

If you would like to bid on the paintings, you can do so by visiting James' website howlween.autumnnightbooks.com.  Drop him an e-mail or give him a call with your bid.  The money goes to a great cause, plus you get awesome art!

A big thanks to TD Mischke for having us on The Night Show on 'CCO last night.  We spoke to him for an hour about Jandek and the upcoming Jandek concert on October 20th in Mankato.  It was a lot of fun, and thankfully Tom (of Tom and Chantill fame) recorded it and put it on SoundCloud.  Here's the whole darn thing!

JANDEK IN MANKATO: 10/20/2012

JANDEK
LIVE IN MANKATO

Saturday, October 20th @ 7:30pm
Halling Recital Hall
Minnesota State University, Mankato

$20 advance/$25 at the door
On sale NOW!

Tickets are now on sale for the historic first Minnesota performance of Jandek.  Seating is very limited, so please don't hesitate if you are considering going.  This is a one of a kind performance, and it is sure to be talked about for years to come.  There has been interest rolling in from around the state and country, and it would be a beautiful thing to have lots of tickets going to KMSU listeners!

This evenings performance will include a group of regional musicians:  Charles Gillett (electric guitar), Craig B. Mataresse (electric bass), Adam Patterson (drums, percussion) and Brian DeGayner (brass).  The Representative from Corwood Industries will be playing piano.

We're pretty thrilled that The Rep will be playing piano for this performance.  He played piano when we saw Jandek play at Grinell in 2007, and it sounded wonderful.  It will surprise you.  Here are some examples:

This is going to be a fantastic show.  Don't miss this rare opporunity to see one of the most mysterious and engimatic performers in contemporary music!

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT - we are spinning Dylan's new album again tonight

This morning on Shuffle Function we played all of Bob Dylan's new album Tempest. It has a lot of buzz surrounding it, and after hearing it I know why - IT IS FANTASTIC! So if you were unable to join us early, tune in tonight at 6 p.m. to hear most of the album for yourself. You will be glad you did.

Here is a new video for the single (and my favorite track at first listen) Duquesne Whistle.

back from the woods

the start of the trail back to my tent
Having spent most of the last four days in the woods of Minnesota with the BFRO 2012 Minnesota Expedition, I find that I am still trying to re-cooperate. Many of you who tune into the show know that I have been gearing up for this since last February, which has given me ample time to prepare myself both physically and mentally. Boy am I glad that I did.

Dead End Camp - my tent is on the right
There were three things I promised myself I needed to do for this trip:

#1) Do absolutely everything that is offered on the expedition - always volunteer.

#2) Tell myself "Not every noise that I hear in the woods is a bigfoot" continously.

#3) Listen and ask a ton of questions.

With that in mind, I anticipated late nights and early mornings and running myself ragged, and that is just what I did. I think over the three nights I was there I slept all of twelve hours (and that might be stretching it a bit). But when are you ever going to have a chance to do this again?

Dead End Camp was to the right - this is where it got REALLY dark on the night walks

I plan on putting together a radio show to air on Shuffle Function in October that will highlight some of my experiences and share with you what I learned. In fact as I type I am listening to the audio from my last night when I left the recorder running. There is a lot of noises (most of which came from fellow snoring campers!) but coyotes, owls, birds, geese, and more can be clearly heard. It is amazing. When you hear it on the show I will be compiling you have to imagine yourself alone in a tent, in the middle of the woods, and you are looking for bigfoot. I have learned that your imagination can sure get the best of you if you let it.

I will let you know when the show will air - and thanks again to Tim for filling in two days while I was out in the woods living a childhood dream. I am not ashamed to admit that I am hooked. There are some great people doing this kind of research in our state, and their skeptical and scientific approach to this subject is just what I was hoping to find. I also love that it is certainly a great excuse to get out into the woods and get some fresh air and exercise, which never hurt anyone.

I'M BORED! WHAT CAN I DO?

STUFF TO DO THIS WEEKEND

9/7 - Indigo Girls with THE FRYE!
Tonight The Frye opens for Indigo Girls!  This is a huge opportunity for them, so we hope you guys will show up early and catch them at 7:00pm.  It's at the Vetter Stone Amphitheater.  Pretty sure there are still tickets.  Anyway, good for them!

9/8 - 9/9 - ROCK BEND FOLK FESTIVAL
This September tradition is always a blast, and it sounds like the weather is gonna be perfect for it.  Two days of great music, food and being lazy.  That sounds like a kick ass weekend.

9/8 - BENEFIT FOR NEW ULM ROLLER DERBY LEAGUE
We're super stoked about Roller Derby coming to the area.  The Mankato league just had a big to-do to raise funds, and now the Goosetown Roller Girls are throwing one this Saturday night!  Even more interesting is the fact that the fund raiser is a Murder Mystery play written by an area writer!  AND THEN you can pay money to force the Derby Girls to sing karaoke songs afterwards.  Sounds like a hell of a good time.  Click on the above link for details.  SUPPORT LOCAL ROLLER DERBY, YOU GUYS!

CHECK YOUR MAILBOX!

Jandek tickets are being delivered to lucky music geeks around the country.  Having them in hand makes the event even MORE real, and the anticipation is killing us.  We hope it lasts.

Don't hesitate to order tickets!  We'd hate for people to miss out on this rare and historic performance!  Clear your calendar on Saturday, October 20th, as Jandek performs for the first time in Minnesota.  It's going to be something special, and it will be a moment that can never be repeated.
