Here's something that the Misties in the audience might have missed!  I was looking at the BluRay of The Heat the other day to see what extras are on it.  Lately all the good stuff is on the BluRay, you know?  So I see that there are FIVE COMMENTARY TRACKS, which seems excessive for anything other than a David Fincher movie.  The cool thing, however, is that one of the was labelled as being by Mystery Science Theater 3000.

It turns out that Joel Hodgson, J. Elvis Weinstein, and Trace Beaulieu recorded an MST style commentary track for the movie!  Paul Feig, the director, is a huge MST3K fan, and he has worked a bit with Joel Hodgson in the past, so this makes a bunch of sense.  Here's what he had to say about it in an interview on

"It’s Josh Weinstein and Trace Beaulieu and Joel Hodgson doing it.  They just came in for one day.  They didn’t even write it.  They just came in and did it as a favor with us for an hour or an hour and a half (laughs)."

So now I feel like I have to buy The Heat on BluRay, a movie that I was amused by but felt it was trying a little too hard.  Ugh.

Oh, as a bonus, here's a clip of Joel Hodgson appearing on the 8th Annual Young Comedians Show sometime in the 8os.  This was the first time I ever saw Joel, so it's kind of crazy to see it again after far too many decades.  Also, is that a laugh track?
