SPINAL TAP: THE FORGOTTEN ORIGINS

The film THIS IS SPINAL TAP is legendary, but did you know that they first appeared five years before the film came out?  In 1979 Rob Reiner shot a pilot called The TV Show, and the cast included Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer. One of the skits was a parody of Wolfman Jack, and it featured the first ever appearance of Spinal Tap doing a really bad song called Rock and Roll Nightmare.  It's not a good song.  It's just not.  Here it is anyway.

MORTON AND HAYES: A FORGOTTEN SHOW ABOUT FORGOTTEN COMEDIANS

21 years ago CBS aired a six episode Summer series that was guaranteed to fail.  Who on earth would run a show filmed in black and white that featured "lost" films from a forgotten comedy duo from the 1930s and expect that audiences at the butt end of the 20th century would embrace it?   The rating supported that suspicion, and the television series Morton and Hayes went on to become as forgotten as the comedy duo they cooked up for the show.

Here's the thing about Morton and Hayes:  It was really funny.  It perfectly captured the spirit of the era of comedy it set out to satirize.  Beyond that, it was presented by people like Rob Reiner, Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, Catherine O'Hara, Joe Flaherty, and Allison Janney.  The people that put it together really know comedy, and they understood the genre they were tackling.

Morton and Hayes will likely never see a video release, which is unfortunate.  I have a VHS of all six episodes taped from the original broadcast, but that doesn't do you guys any good.  Thankfully youtube has ONE solitary episode available for us.  It's entitled Society Saps, written and directed by Christopher Guest (who also cameos with a song and an appearance at the end of the show).  The quality is TERRIBLE, but it's all that I could find.

So sit back and enjoy Chick Morton and Eddie Hayes in Society Saps!

THE MASTER DOES APPROVE!

We hope everybody had a great time at the Rifftrax encore presentation of "Manos": The Hands of Fate tonight!  We'll be giving away tickets next week to their encore presentation of Plan Nine From Outer Space, so be sure to tune in for your chance to win.  Until then, here's the EPIC Mystery Science Theater 3000 version of "Manos"!

THE MANKATO ROLLER DERBY IS LOOKING FOR YOUR HELP

This is the Mankato Area Derby Girls - or the MAD Girls and they are looking for some volunteers to help with their upcoming season. They are just getting on their feet - or skates if you want to be realistic - and could use our help. There are a number of ways that you can get involved, and if you have any questions don't hesitate to contact the team through their facebook page here.

In addition to volunteers - they are still accepting skaters - so grab your wheels and get down to a practice! They practice every Monday and Thursday night from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. I am not sure where they are meeting - I think at the YMCA, but you can contact them for more details.

 HOW  CAN  I  GET  INVOLVED?

YOU CAN HELP THE TEAM OUT DURING THEIR BOUTS.  The first hometown bout takes place March 30th in Mankato at the Verizon Wireless Center and is called "How The Rookies Rumble". The doors open at 6 p.m. and the bout starts at 7 p.m. The MAD Girls could use some help with projects like taking tickets, running the merchandise table, ushering in the fans, etc. Volunteers will still get to cheer on the Roller Derby Girls so don't worry about missing out on any of the fast wheeling action!

NOT SO GREAT ON SKATES?  THEN BECOME A NON-SKATING OFFICIAL. This is right up my alley! I have not had rolling skates on since the 80's when Skating World was all the rage, but I still would love to get involved. You can become a member of the MAD Girls (which does include paying dues) and help out with running the penalty box, being a time keeper and helping out with the scoring. The best part is that you would also get to pick out a Roller Derby name!! You must also pass a test  to become a NSO, and you are required to attend 25% of the practices a month, but you are also then an official team member and official bad ass!!

LAST  BUT  NOT  LEAST - BE A FANATICAL FAN.  We have a lot of great attributes to our city of Mankato, but it is groups like the Mankato Area Derby Girls that really make our community stand out above the rest. They are in their infancy as an organization, and so they need your support more than ever. Tell your friends and neighbors about the Derby, pack the seats at the bouts, and scream like a banshee for your hometown team. That last part will just come naturally - Roller Derby is a blast to watch!!

Tomorrow night you can support the team financially and hear some great local bands too. 5 bucks gets you in the door, and you can probably chat with team members about signing up as volunteer, skater, or NSO.  They have a facebook event page with all of the details here. Bring a bunch of friends with you, and have  Derby name while you are there!

KATO SHORT FILM

On Saturday, January 18th, Shuffle Function, along with Ton from The Five Count, judged the first annual Landlocked Film Festival.  The films ran from horror to humorous to sentimental to artsy, and all of them had to incorporate Mankato somewhere in the content.

The three judges unanimously agreed on the first place winner:  Jesus by Grey Light Media.  I guess the rest of the films will be making their way onto the internet some time soon, so you should check them out if you get a chance.

"Jesus" from GreyLightMedia on Vimeo.

And this is the second place winner:

HERE IS WHAT I WILL BE READING FOR THE NEXT FEW MONTHS

This year marks the 50th Anniversary of JFK's assassination, which has prompted me to do something that I have always wanted to do, read all the conspiracy and history books on the subject that I can find!! Here is a photo of the stockpile I have accumulated already. This is no small task I've decided to undertake. The subject of Kennedy's death has been scrutinized a thousand times over, with every detail debated and belabored. But that is just part of the fun. I am always looking for reading suggestions - if there is a title you think I need to find please don't hesitate to drop me an email at shufflefunction@hotmail.com. I am trying to keep an open mind when it comes to the conspiracy aspects of that fateful day in Dealey Plaza, so be it mafia, coup d'etat, lone gunman or multiple shooters, I am interested. Thanks!

Shelley

For Your Consideration...............

We had a great request come in this morning for The Rutles. The caller had never heard them before, and had only read about them in Michael Palin's excellent Diary Series of books. You have probably heard us geek out over our favorite Python's books before, but we can never say enough about what a splendid read they are. SO............Shyboy Tim suggested we all get on the same page with the Beatles and Rutles. He suggests you first watch this documentary, The Complete Beatles first.

You now have a working knowledge of all things Beatles, and so some of the subtle jokes you are about to watch won't fly over your head. Here they are, the Pre-Fab Four, The Rutles!

Need a suggestion for your reading list? Pick up Michael Palin's two Diary books, Micheal Palin's Diaries 1969 - 1979: The Python Years and Michael Palin Halfway To Hollywood Diaries 1980 - 1988.

SPREAD YOUR TINY WINGS AND FLY AWAY...

OH MAN!  I HAVE BEEN
LOOKING FOR THIS FOREVER!

Years ago, after Kids In The Hall,  Bruce McCulloch wrote for Saturday Night Live.  During this period he produced some wonderfully strange short films.  One of them has been missing in action for ever, because SNL keeps pulling it from Youtube and wherever.  BUT NOW I HAVE FOUND IT!  Watch this before it vanishes again.  Classic Bruce McCulloch.

THE H IS O: WATCH THIS, BUT ONLY IF YOU HAVE FIVE MINUTES!

OAK STREET CINEMA: WHY DO ALL THE GOOD THEATERS GO AWAY?

We've been talking a lot about The Uptown Theater and its recent remodeling.  I was profoundly disappointed by it.  The reserved seating sucks, the balcony costs more, and the sound system is terrible.  When we saw The Master there on opening weekend we could only understand half of what was said.  The Master was PROBABLY one of the best movies I've seen this year, but I can only be fifty percent certain.  Shelley's probably going to give it another shot, but I won't be going back any time soon.

Anyway, thinking about The Uptown has made me reflect on great movie going experiences I've had.  The original Uptown was my favorite theater around, but there was once another theater that rivaled virtually any other for the quality of films and the variety of programming it would provide:  The Oak Street Cinema.  The greatest films in history were projected on their screen, and I saw some things there that I had never dreamed I would see in a theater.  It was worth the two hour drive home at midnight just to see the things they would show.

The last thing I saw there (with Shelley and Scooter Polanski) was a presentation in 2008 of What Is It? featuring its director and star Crispin Glover.  The film was difficult and the Q&A was angry and menacing, but it was the last in a long series of memorable film experiences I had there, and in some ways the most memorable.  In 2011 the Oak Street Cinema was torn down, and along with it went a very important chapter of Minnesota film history.  RIP Oak Street.

Here are some of the memorable films I saw at The Oak Street.  In my dreams Grind-Fu is this good.

HEAR THE NEW YO LA TENGO ALBUM THIS MORNING

This beauty just arrived in the mail folks and I am going to play it for you during tomorrow morning's Shuffle Function show. Yo La Tengo is one of my favorites and I bet they have a soft spot in your heart too. If they don't, then my guess is you just haven't heard them yet. The new album is called Fade and it is 10 tracks long.

Just to give you a heads up, I plan on starting the album after our first talk break in the 7 o'clock hour and I'll play the whole damn thing without interruption. So be sure to tune in and be sure to tell your friends to do likewise. You can catch us on the radio dial from 6 to 9 a.m. every week day ( and at 6 p.m. Thursday nights) on 89.7 fm or if you prefer you can listen via the "on-lines" at www.kmsu.org
just click on the listen on-line option.
