SPEECHLESS FILM FESTIVAL: MAY 3rd & 4th!

SPEECHLESS INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL
MAY 3rd & 4th
MANKATO, MN
Presented by Bethany Lutheran College

This weekend is the first ever Speechless Film Festival, right here in Mankato, MN.  It will be held at the old Mankato Place Theaters.  You might remember them as the cheap seats theaters, or The Mall 4, if you're an old timer.  The entries for the festival were submitted from around the world, and cover a wide range of themes and styles, and the overall program is pretty exciting.

Shelley and I were honored to be asked to act as judges for the festival.  We have never had a chance to do something like this before, so the opportunity to flex our movie geek muscles was very welcome.  The entries ranged anywhere from a few minutes to an hour and a half long, and they were all fascinating.

While all the award winners were deserving of their accolades, the film that we both really adored was called Native Boy.  In our opinion it was the finest out of the bunch, and it received an honorable mention.  It was beautifully filmed and acted, and it reduced us both to tears.  The website for the festival isn't clear as to what is showing when, but if they are showing Native boy you should make a point to see it.  Hands down the most rewarding film we saw.

GRIND-FU INTERWEBS: ANDROGYNY

Shyboy here...

We had a lot of different double bills daydreamed up when there was funding for Grind-Fu Cinema.  Now that the money has dried up we're still left with the daydreams, and so you've been seeing these daydreams materialize on the blog as a proxy.  If you can't enjoy them in a theater, enjoy them on your laptop!

One double bill that I thought would be great was an androgyny double bill, featuring an influence and the son/daughter of that influence.  First up would be Hedwig and the Angry Inch, which was one of the first movies I ever picked up on DVD.  I only knew it by reputation, but I wasn't disappointed when I finally saw it.  It looks great, the music is tops (Wig In A Box was a big influence on the Shuffle Function Morning Show Theme), and it's an exciting movie from start to finish.  The fact that it was John Cameron Mitchell's first film (based on his off broadway production) is pretty awesome, and it's also cool that Hedwig was a big reason that Bob Mould finally came out of the closet.  Anything that motivates a person to do something that liberating is a good thing.

So I wanted to put the film on here, but I couldn't find it.  What I did find was video of the original off broadway production.  The sound is a little dicey, but it's an interesting artifact.

So that's the influenced.

The second half of the bill would be D.A. Pennebaker's Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars:  The Motion Picture.  When it comes to the big daddy androgynous rock and roll icons, nobody is bigger than David Bowie, and his glam is all over Hedwig.  Since he just released his first album in ten years (It's called The Next Day and you should totally buy it), it seems like an appropriate time to feature Ziggy.

PLEDGE DRIVE A-GO-GO: THE AFTERMATH

Even after mass quantities of sleep it's still difficult to process just how successful the 2013 Shuffle Function 24 Hour Pledge Drive A-Go-Go was.  By six p.m. on Friday the 26th you guys brought the total to a whopping $31,005.33!  We assume the .33 is courtesy of 3 1/3. After subtracting the pre-marathon totals, KMSU listeners and area businesses contributed over $26,000 during the entire marathon!

Think about that:  $26,000 in the space of 24 hours.  Not only is that the largest amount raised during a marathon, but that's better than a large amount of the pledge drives we've participated in during the 12 years we've been at KMSU!  To say that your generosity is humbling is a gross understatement.  Thank you doesn't seem strong enough for how grateful we are to have you guys as listeners.

Now comes the hard part.  The pledge drive runs until May 5th, and we still need $4000 to hit the pledge drive goal.  That'd be a sneeze for larger Public Radio Stations, but we know from past experience that the home stretch is the hardest part.  We had so many pledges during the first three days of the drive that it's hard to believe there is anybody out there that hasn't yet contributed.

We know you are out there, though, and we're talking to you.

Statistically speaking, only about 10% of people that watch or listen to public media actually contribute.  That's a shockingly small amount, but I get it.  I was one of those folks for most of my life.  It's free to watch or listen, so what's the big deal?  Well, I can tell you that it is a very big deal.  Being up here and involved in a small independent station is pretty eye opening.  The struggles we deal with just to keep on the air are costly, both money wise and labor wise.  To make things worse, funding and grants get smaller and smaller, and the cost of operation and syndicated programming gets larger and larger.  We just found out that the prices for things like World Cafe are going up, and that's an incredibly large and valuable part of our schedule.  We can't afford to lose it, but we're worried we won't be able to afford it.

We're not asking for the world.  We know that times are tough and people are counting their pennies.  Honestly, that's life at KMSU!  If you could just throw in a few bucks... maybe ten or twenty dollars... it would really help.  The small pledges are just as important as any other pledge, and they all serve the same purpose.

If you have it in you, please call us at 507-389-5678 or 1-800-456-7810 and contribute to the Spring Pledge Drive.  You can also pledge online at kmsu.org.  The goal we have for this drive is the largest we've ever had to stare down, and we are so close to kicking its ass.  We REALLY want to kick its ass.

Shyboy

Also, join us at Grind-Fu Cinema tonight so we can thank you in person!

Tonight we're unleashing the dreadful fury that is The Guy From Harlem!  For the third year in a row, Grind-Fu Cinema presents this unintended comedy masterpiece BECAUSE YOU DEMANDED IT!  You have nobody to blame but yourselves.  If you have never seen The Guy From Harlem you really should.  It's the best worst movie you'll see this year (until the next M. Night Shyamalan movie comes out.)
After the pure and unadulterated TGFH experience, get ready for The Guy From Harlem: Rifftrax Edition!  Mike, Bill, and Kevin really sink their teeth into this one.  I mean, The Guy From Harlem requires no running commentary to be hilarious, but the Rifftrax gang let loose with diabolical glee!

Also, Grind-Fu Cinema is FREE!  Bring snacks, your friends, and dress in layers (because the theater suffers from climate related mood swings) and enjoy a night of fun and questionable cinema!

I'm the new boy in town!  Where can I go?

2013 SPRING SWAG! CALL NOW!

WE'RE APPROACHING THE HALF WAY POINT!CALL NOW WITH YOUR SUPPORT!

We're up against the biggest goal we've ever faced, and we're desperately counting on you folks to chip in and help us keep KMSU on the air!  Without your financial support we cannot continue to bring you the unique local programming you've come to know and love.  Not only do your pledges help keep us on the air, but they also act as a vote of confidence in the station, and the university notices these things.  It shows the folks that run the show that we've valued by you and that we're an asset to the community.

Any amount makes a huge difference, but we have some great swag available at different pledge levels to hopefully nudge you towards making a contribution.  And now...

THE SWAG!

$25 - KMSU MUG

Combine two of life's greatest pleasures - coffee and your favorite radio station - all in one attractive mug!  The bright yellow color also helps wake you up to catch your early morning or late night favorite KMSU programs!

$25 - CRYPT OF UNDERGROUND NEANTHROPIC TELEVISION #6 DVD

Mr. Specific strikes again with another DVD featuring his unique video forays into the fringes of the society.  Every Spring, just in time for pledge drive, a nondescript brown paper bag with an unmarked DVD arrives at the Shuffle Function office door.  Don't miss out on the 6th weird installment!

$50 - 2013 SHUFFLE FUNCTION T-SHIRT

Shyboy Tim has struck again with this new t-shirt design that highlights on of our signature events:  Shuffle Function Radio Roulette!  HELL HATH NO FURY LIKE A RADIO GOD SCORNED!  Available in S to 2XL.

$65 - RAG AND A COASTER COMBO
For the thrifty listener who wants to save a buck but score some sweet premiums!  You will receive the new Shuffle Function t-shirt PLUS the Crypt of Underground Neanthropic Television #6 DVD.  It doesn't take a math genius to see that this is one heck of a deal!

$60 - WORLD CAFE CD
KMSU is one of the rare spots on the dial to carry World Cafe, and this CD collects some of the recent amazing in-studio performances from both old and new musical favorites!

$100 - SHUFFLE FUNCTION PROGRAM DIRECTOR FOR A DAY
The Cadillac of premiums, this allows you to join us during the morning show for two hours and control the playlist!  You bring your music collection and get to play DJ and we just push buttons and talk too much.  With this you also get the brand new Shuffle Function t-shirt, the new Crypt of Underground Neanthropic Television #6 DVD, and CD copy of your two hours of radio infamy to share with family and friends.

$100 - NICK DRAKE 3 CD COLLECTION

During his short life Nick Drake put out three of the most spectacularly unappreciated albums ever released.  Each one is a masterpiece of musicianship and expression, and each one strikes a familiar chord with whomever hears them.  For a pledge of $100 you will receive all three of these albums, each of which received five out of five stars from allmusic guide.  If you aren't already familiar with the stunning work of Nick Drake, then you are in for a treat.  He will be your new favorite musician.  This isn't an exaggeration.  This is music that will make you wonder where it has been hiding all your life.

$100 - KMSU DAY SPONSORSHIP
You can sponsor an entire day of radio on KMSU with this premium.  Commemorate a birthday or anniversary, surprise the music geek in your life, treat the new graduate, or celebrate the music of your favorite musician!  These are just a few ways that you can use a KMSU Day Sponsorship.  A personalized message will also be read throughout the day so the whole world knows that you are a super cool person that supports independent radio!

$250 - SHUFFLE FUNCTION RADIO ROULETTE HOME GAME
Exclusively offered during the 24 Hour Pledge Drive A-Go-Go!  Now you can play Radio Roulette in the comfort of your own home!  You'll get a turntable, 20 records, dice, coins... the whole shebang!  We've already had one walk out the door, so there are only four Home Games left!  Don't miss out on this unique premium.  The Shuffle Function artisans worked hard to put this together for you!

$500 - ORIGINAL KMSU RELATED ART FROM AMANDA WIRIG!

For the last few pledge drives we've had terrific contributions from Amanda Wirig, local artist and KMSU supporter.  She has created original works of art that people have snapped up almost as fast as we have posted them!  The above work, entitled "As The Record Turns", is her latest contribution, and the largest one she's ever done for us!  It measures 24" X 36", and it looks even more striking in person.  If you want to be a supporter of independent radio, as well as support the local art scene, this is the premium for you.  We're also throwing in a couple of Shuffle Function t-shirts to sweeten the deal.  Don't miss out on this one of a kind item!

There's the swag!  Drop us a line with questions, but most of all drop us a line with your support!   Give early and give often!  We are counting on you!

CALL 389-5678 OR  1-800-456-7810 AND MAKE YOUR PLEDGE, OR MAKE YOUR DONATION ONLINE!  (Don't forget to specify KMSU as your pledge recipient!)

Thanks for being the best listeners in the world!
