WHO WANTS TO SEE A MESSED UP MOVIE AS MUCH AS I DO?

The last film the Grind-Fu gang ever saw at the legendary Oak Street Cinema was Crispin Glover's WHAT IS IT?  It was a pretty legendary night for us in many ways.  First off, it began with Mr. Glover himself delivering a reading from several of his manipulated books accompanied by a slideshow.  This was very entertaining, and his performance was exactly what one would expect from him.  Then came WHAT IS IT?

To say that WHAT IS IT? is a difficult film is to put it mildly.  It was easily one of the most challenging films any of us had seen up to that point.  It's hard to explain what is going on in it, so I won't bother.  But it was unsettling and funny and flat out weird.

Was it offensive?  That's up to the viewer, but a large section of the audience that night was very offended, and they didn't try to sugar coat it during the Q&A that followed the screening.  Many in the audience were openly hostile towards Mr. Glover, and he treated their position with respect and did his best to defend his work.  What's more, audience members were openly hostile with other audience members, and at times it seemed like a fight was going to break out.

Whether or not Crispin Glover successfully defended his film is also open to discussion.  I personally felt it was deliberately provocative and without higher purpose, but I do believe he feels strongly that his film is in some ways empowering.

Afterwards he signed copies of his books, and he was very gracious and took time with each person in the very long line waiting for him.

Why am I bringing this up?  Because next week Crispin Glover will be at the amazing The Heights Theater in Minneapolis for two nights, and he's screening the first two films in his "It" trilogy.  What sucks about this?  I WILL BE ON VACATION AND NOWHERE NEAR THE THEATER!  It's up to you guys to go to these screenings and report back on how it went!

Monday, June 3rd - IT'S FINE!  EVERYTHING IS FINE!

I haven't seen this one before, and I'm pretty sure this will be it's first ever Twin Cities screening.  If it is half as provocative as WHAT IS IT? it will make for and interesting discussion afterwards.

Tuesday, June 4th - WHAT IS IT?

If you go to this, please let us know what you think, and PLEASE let us know how the Q&A goes.

Advance tickets are available for both screenings.  If you've never been to The Heights before, well... well, maybe these aren't the movies to introduce the theater to you.  But it's a beautiful and historic theater, and it offers a truly unique movie going experience.

GOOD LUCK!

Shyboy

GRIND-FU CINEMA PRESENTS DONDERO!

For our tenth anniversary we went full on Dondero!  We had five hours of Dondero A Cappella Choir and Pop Concert Instruments performances, featuring a lengthy interview with Rick Hartsoe, the guy behind Pop Concert.  At the end of the week we had Grind-Fu Cinema, and one of the features was a special presentation of Pop Concert highlights drawn from Mr. Hartsoe's archives.  It gave a great sense of what the Pop Concert experience was like, and the Grind-Fu audience was cheering and participating as it went along.  It was definitely one of our all-time favorite Grind-Fu experiences.

Now, three years later, we have FINALLY uploaded the video to youtube, so you can revel in the Pop Concert experience in the privacy of your own home!  We hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

SO LONG, FRED AND BILL!

This weekend was the last Saturday Night Live for both Bill Hader and Fred Armisen.  With the possible departure of Jason Sudeikis and Seth Meyer moving on to Late Night, this will be one of the largest mass exits for cast memberss in ages.  With any luck the transition will be impressive, like when Will Ferrell joined all those years ago.  It couldn't be worse than the Robert Downey season.

Anyway, this show also gave us the final Stefon skit.  At least the last one until Bill Hader hopefully guest hosts the show.  The sketch was filled with cameos by every character Stefon mentioned in his club descriptions, and it was pretty hilarious.  Luckily, Splitsider annotated it, so we can so who all was in attendance.

For Fred Armisen's final bow he broght back Thatcherite punk Ian Rubbish. Dig the cameos in this sketch!

http://numerogroup.files.wordpress.com/2013/02/num040covers.gif

The latest Numero collection came out, and once again it is genius. Also genius is this infomercial that they made and actually ran in Southern markets at three in the morning. Numero, you had me at funk.

WHEN SOME GREAT BAND DIES

There aren't a lot of bands that I've felt truly and deeply sad about their demise.  Maybe Husker Du?  Oh, and Sonic Youth.  I guess there are a couple of others, so scratch that.  But one that both Shelley and I felt deep and profound sadness for was LCD Soundsystem.  Right out of the gate the songs were killer, and to see the band live was life changing.  We saw them play at First Avenue when they toured for the first album, and damn... the rumors were true.

So when they drew the curtain at the big final show, it was sad.  Really sad.  But they went out guns blazing and at the top of their game.  It was a celebration.  Honestly, watch Shut Up and Play The Hits, the documentary about the end of the band.  It's great and really emotional.  Plus, the DVD also comes with the COMPLETE final show, so you can kiss three hours of your life away.

Oh hell... HERE'S THE ENTIRE FAREWELL SHOW!

But here's a much shorter documentary about their lable, DFA.  Great band.  Great story.

SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE AND THE END OF SHOW CONCEPT SKETCH

Most Saturdays it seems like Saturday Night Live top loads the show and then gives up after Weekend Update.  Every once and a while, if you are persistent and can sweat out the throwaways, you are rewarded with a sketch that is so weird and left of center that it makes staying up until a stupid hour of the day completely worth it.

My previous end of night favorite was one that featured  Will Forte as a psychotic HR person that is hiring astronauts for NASA.  He's also obsessed with potato chips.

Last Night, there was an end of night skit that had a surprisingly elaborate setup, and when the payoff came at 11:55, it was TOTALLY worth it.  The sketch featured Zach Galifianakis as the host of a public access show called Darrell's House.  The concept of the show is that we are seeing the first time anybody gets invited over to Darrell's House, and as Zach does the show he is constantly giving editing direction to his producer about where cuts will be made and where there should be added effects.  As a skit it felt like a failure.  It seemed like it required intimate knowledge of both public access programming and how they are made.  Basically, when it aired at 11:30, it seemed like the beginning of the "let's pad out the show" skits.

The payoff came at the end of the show.  It's moments like this that make me keep watching SNL

BIRDEMIC 2 INVADES YOUR HOME/DEVICE!

Oh hells yes.  The official site for Birdemic 2 is up, and you can purchase the film from it!  Birdemic was massively entertaining (for all the wrong reasons) and I'm hoping the sequel is just as entertaining.  The new trailer seems to indicate that the director is still steering the ship in the same direction, so that's a good thing.  Anyway, there are all kinds of packages available on the site, featuring things like posters, shirts, Eagle puppets and lunch with somebody affiliated with the film.

Eagle Puppets.

NICK DRAKE: A SKIN TOO FEW

Thanks again for all of the amazing support you guys gave us during the pledge drive.  We're just getting the pledge forms back from the billing office, and the premiums will be sent out soon.  We hope that the folks who pledged for the Nick Drake Collection will be as thrilled with the music as we are about being able to present it to you.  It's amazing stuff, and we truly feel that it will be your new favorite music.

To get you ready for your new favorite music, here's a wonderful documentary that was produced a few years ago about him.  A Skin Too Few: The Days of Nick Drake serves as a great primer to Nick, and it gives great insight into the man and his world.  It's beautiful and sad, and a tremendous film.

hands down - our favorite film at The Speechless Film Festival this weekend.........................Native Boy

As we mentioned earlier on the blog and on the air, we were a part of the judging team fro the Bethany Speechless Film Festival which is going on this Friday and Saturday. We had an opportunity to screen and judge about 65 films for this event, and hands down this was our favorite. Henry Roosevelt is the man behind  Native Boy, and he describes it as a film about a boy's search for the sun, but it is so much more than that. By the time I finished watching this I was reduced to a blubbering sobbing state. A story about regrets, loss and heroism - this is not to be missed. I will try to find out when it is being screened, if at all and will let you know, but for now here is a sneak peek at the trailer.

HOLY CRAP AND THANKS!

Unbelievable.  At the start of the day we had $1200 left to raise in order to reach the $35,000 pledge drive goal.  By 8:30 we had it beat.  Basically, you guys freaking rule.  Thanks a ton!

When the goal was announced to KMSU volunteers a few months ago, we were more than a little freaked out.  Shelley and I didn't even acknowledge it for several days, because we couldn't bear talking about it.  All the while we knew that if anybody could help us hit the goal, it was the KMSU listeners.  They always come through, and they are true believers.  Once again, you surpassed all expectations.

Today is also Shelley's birthday, so she decided to spin 45s.  As per the new tradition, Cult of Amanda sang Happy Birthday for her.  Once again, they are available for weddings and bar mitzvahs.
