Grind-Fu Cinema presents

THE FILMS OF FRITZ LANG
featuring
METROPOLIS and M

Saturday, July 27th @ 7pm
Wiecking 220 Auditorium
on the campus of Minnesota State University, Mankato

FREE! FREE! FREE! FREE! FREE!

We're always proud of our Grind-Fu Cinema line ups, regardless of film quality.  This month we're really laying some quality on you with a double bill of Fritz Lang films!  We'll be showing Metropolis and M, and we couldn't be more proud.  These films not only stand as a testament to the genius of Fritz Lang, but they also stand amongst the greatest achievements in film.  No Z-grade horror or kung fu this time around.  This month it's a double bill of genius.

Metropolis
(silent, 1927)

Not only is Metropolis an amazing story about the triumph of humankind in the face of oppression and technology, but it's still, to this day, a visually stunning piece of film making.  The sets should be in museums.  It's hard to imagine a story of this scale being told today without computers, but the grandeur that Lang gave us in the 1920s rivals some of the CGI orgies that we see in theaters now.  Metropolis is a remarkable achievement, and you really need to see it.  If you have seen it but not in a theater, then here is your chance.  It's amazing.

M
(German w subtitles, 1931)

M was the first "talkie" from Fritz Lang, and it is riveting.  Lang uses silence as effectively as sound in this film.  The first 10 minutes will leave you breathless with suspense.  This was Peter Lorre's first film, and his portrayal of the villain was so effective that it type cast him as a weirdo for his entire career.

Join us for this incredible double feature!  Remember, GRIND FU CINEMA IS FREE!  Bring your own friends and snacks and enjoy a great night of film with like minded movie geeks.

I'm the new boy in town!  Where can I go?

COUSIN OLIVER-NADO!

SCENE: A bus full of kids is surrounded by all the sharks that have been blown inland by a tornado.  The bus driver is reassuring them that help will arrive soon.  The one thing the kids don't know is that this bus driver KILLED THE BRADY BUNCH!

In a world filled with finger pointers, Cousin Oliver was the Yoko Ono of the Brady Bunch.  Of course, Yoko didn't break up the beatles and Cousin Oliver didn't kill the Bradys.  I actually never had a problem with Cousin Oliver.  I am to hardcore of a Brady Bunch fan for that nonsense.

THAT'S BESIDE THE POINT!  The real point is the the Bus Driver in that scene from SHARKNADO was played by Robbie Rist, the actor that played Cousin Oliver!  Robbie is also a power pop maniac, and as luck would have it, he plays in a band with Anthony Ferrante, THE DIRECTOR OF SHARKNADO!  The band is called Quint, and... wait for it... THEY PERFORM (THE BALLAD OF) SHARKNADO!

Sometimes... sometimes life is amazing.

MOVIE GEEKS: CRITERION SALE STARTS TODAY!

FOURTH CHRISTMAS IS HERE!*  The bi-annual Criterion sale begins at Barnes & Noble today.  Criterion Collection DVDs are 50% off in store and online.  If you're a serious movie geek you know that these discs are spendy propositions, and this is the moment in time where they do the least amount of damage.  Damage is a relative term, because this sale was a bit heavy on the wallet, but still...

*For those of you playing at home, First Christmas is Christmas, Second Christmas is Record Store Day, and Third Christmas is Black Friday Record Store Day.

JANDEK: THE SONG OF MORGAN

Look what showed up at the station!  Brand new music from Jandek!  The album is called The Song of Morgan, and it's nine cds with one piano piece on each.  You can see from the times on the packaging that it's not exactly set up for air play, but we'll be featuring snippets from them on the July 2nd show.  We're excited!

If you are ready to let Corwood Industries into your heart, go to corwood.org and browse the catalog, then send off your order.  We're happy to give you pointers if you don't know where to start.  Jandek can be challenging, but if you stick with it you will be amazed.

This guide is old, but it gives some pointers if you're looking for direction with Jandek.  I'd definitely add Maze of Phantoms (0808) and the INCREDIBLE Atlanta Saturday (0809).  And of course, The Song of Morgan (0811).

Bang! you are missing out on some seriously weird and funny stuff.  Host Scott Auckerman and his sidekick Reggie Watts bring loads of the funniest comedians around to your TV set starting July12th.  Season one of the show is available on Netflix RIGHT NOW, and that will allow you to play catch-up before the second season rolls around.  ENJOY!
