DONDERO COMES ALIVE (or Our Breakfast With Hartsoe)

Today was a long time coming.  This morning we were joined by Rick Hartsoe (aka Mr. Hartsoe) as we geeked out on the music of The Dondero A Cappella Choir and Pop Concert Instruments.  Rick had loads of great stories from his four decades of teaching at Dondero, as well as inside information on what it took to get these Pop Concerts off the ground.  Unbelievably, these shows came together in only eight weeks!  That's a lot of focus and insanely hard work, but in the end it paid off.

Rick and Donna Hartsoe

Rick brought a folder along that was filled with the names of everyone that performed during Pop Concert.  It was a valuable resource as we pondered who played what during the show.

It's kind of heartbreaking that we only had three hours, because there were so many amazing performances that never got played, as well as many stories that never got shared on the air.  Still, the Hartsoe/Shuffle Function summit finally happened!

And afterward we went to Happy Chef.

DONDERO FANS REJOICE! RICK HARTSOE ON THE MORNING SHOW THIS FRIDAY!

When Shuffle Function turned ten a few years ago we celebrated with five hours of programming devoted to the Dondero A Cappella Choir and Pop Concert Instruments.  The centerpiece of the whole shebang was an extensive interview we did with Rick Hartsoe, the guiding light behind the concerts for four decades.  We had been searching for him for years, so for us it was quite a coup, and out of it we've developed a long distance friendship that keeps delivering new and interesting facts about the history of Dondero High School and the Pop Concert experience.

At the time of the interview Mr. Hartsoe said that someday we would meet.  He didn't know when, but he felt it would happen.  Of course we hoped that would be the case, but he's a busy guy in his retirement.  Rick and his wife Donna travel around the country in an RV visiting former students and seeing the sites, and Mankato is one heck of a detour.  On Friday, September 27th, this is gonna change.

Rick Hartsoe will be joining us in the studio for music and memories about Dondero High and Pop Concert.  This is all very unexpected and it came together spontaneously this morning during the show, so we're still trying to wrap our brains about it.

RICK HARTSOE WILL BE ON THE MORNING SHOW SEPTEMBER 27th, 2013!
Listen live from six to nine a.m. CST on KMSU 89.7fm/KMSK 91.3fm (Southern Minnesota and Northern Iowa listeners) or online at kmsu.org!

Here's ALL FIVE HOURS of our Dondero programming, just in case you didn't get a chance to hear it live the first time. Let us know what you think!

FALLON GIVES CHARLIE MURPHY A RUN FOR HIS MONEY

For a few years now Charlie Murphy has held the title for amazing celebrity Prince stories, but recently Jimmy Fallon has changed that.  Recently he was on The Tonight Show and he shared the story of how he ended up playing ping pong with Prince.  It's pretty good.  So who holds the Prince story title?  Is it Charlie Murphy or Jimmy Fallon?  There can be only one winner, and that winner is EVERYONE!

JANDEK: MINNEAPOLIS SATURDAY - THE MUSICIANS

We're thrilled to announce the musicians that will be participating in the Jandek performance on Halloween.  Like the Mankato performance last October, the band will be composed of Minnesota musicians.  The set will be completely improvised, and what occurs in the moment will never happen again.  This is LITERALLY a one of a kind event, and we hope that you will be there.  It's going to be a memorable night.

GRIND-FU CINEMA THIS SATURDAY!

Grind-Fu Cinema Presents
COLOR ME OBSESSED:
A FILM ABOUT THE REPLACEMENTS
and
HIGH FIDELITY

Saturday, September 28th @ 7p.m.
Wiecking 220 Auditorium
Minnesota State University, Mankato

FREE! FREE! FREE! FREE! FREE!

The Grind-Fu staff is nuthin' but a bunch of fanatics!  Obsessed with film, music, vinyl, books, and whatever else you got!  This month's Grind-Fu deals with some serious fanaticism for bands and for vinyl.  We're featuring a numbered, limited edition, 180 gram double bill featuring Color Me Obsessed: A Film About The Replacements, and High Fidelity!  We would be hard pressed to come up with a music geekier line-up than this, so don't miss out!

COLOR ME OBSESSED: A FILM ABOUT THE REPLACEMENTS (2011)
Dir: Gorman Bechard

The Replacements were either the best band in the world or the worst band in the world, depending on the night and the degree of inebriation, and even when they were bad they were pretty damn legendary.  They were a band that should have been huge, but their lack or record sales and their self destructive impulses denied them at ever opportunity.  With time their stature has only grown, and their fans have done their part to spread the gospel of one of the most influential bands to ever crawl out of Minnesota.

Color Me Obsessed is a documentary that has no participation from the band and doesn't feature a single note of their music.  What it does have is their story told by the people that it matters to most:  Their fans, their friends, and seemingly everybody that worked with them.  Director Gorman Bechard is a serious fan of The Replacements, and his documentary is a note perfect love letter to this band of beautiful losers.

HIGH FIDELITY (2000)
Dir: Stephen Frears

High Fidelity is a movie that pefectly captures what record collecting is, what kind of person pursues it, and how it creates the soundtrack of a lifetime.  It's funny and heartbreaking and geeky and dead on.  This one is for ALL Music Geeks, or for anybody that just loves a friggin' great movie with friggin' great performances and friggin' great music.

Have we mentioned that Grind-Fu Cinema is FREE?  'Cuz it is.

JANDEK - MINNEAPOLIS THURSDAY

JANDEK
OCTOBER 31st @7p.m.
CEDAR CULTURAL CENTER
MINNEAPOLIS, MN.
Almost one year ago to the day of his historic Mankato show, Jandek is returning to Minnesota courtesy of KMSU and the Minnesota State Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund. If you recall last year's announcement, we spoke of running out of unobtainable goals in bringing Jandek to Minnesota. Never in a million years did we think we'd be able to utter these words a second time, but as Tim said last year,

THIS IS REALLY HAPPENING!!

After months of planning and pinching ourselves to see if it wasn't just a dream, we are pleased to announce that Jandek will be performing October 31st at The Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The doors will open at 7 p.m. and the concert will be begin at 7:30 p.m. This is an all ages show. Tickets are $15 in advance and $18 at the door and will go on sale this Friday (September 20th) at noon.

For those of you lucky enough to have attended last year's Mankato Jandek performance, you are now somewhat familiar with what to expect. But having said that, no two Jandek performances are ever the same. The Representative of Corwood will be joined on stage by a number of local musicians, and together they will undertake a one-of-a-kind improvisational adventure never to be repeated and definitely not to be missed. Personally, last year's concert left me full of nervous excitement, overwhelmed at it's soaring beauty, emotional spent, and flabbergasted all at once. I had never experienced this in a live music setting before, and I anticipate feeling much the same way after the Minneapolis performance.

And as if this news wasn't exciting enough, there is one more element to this performance that we would like to address. Tuning The Pulse is a short film that stems from footage shot during Jandek's Mankato concert. For the first time ever, the camera was allowed to fully participate behind the scenes, therefore giving us a small glimpse into the process involved with a Jandek performance. That project has now expanded to encompass the making of a full length documentary film, one in which Jandek himself is involved. The people behind Tuning The Pulse will be filming the show at The Cedar Cultural Center for inclusion in this upcoming documentary.

We will of course be passing along more information about this in the days and weeks to come, but in the mean time we encourage you to help us spread the word about Jandek's return to Minnesota. Here are some important web sites for you to utilize and share:

Shuffle Function on KMSU

Tickets are available through The Cedar's website, in their lobby during shows, over the phone, at the Electric Fetus record store and at Depth of Field (the futon and yarn shop across the street from The Cedar). As I mentioned before they go on sale Friday, September 20th at noon.

LAST CALL FOR TUNE TOWN T-SHIRT SUBMISSIONS!

DESIGN A COOL T-SHIRT FOR TUNE TOWN'S
20th ANNIVERSARY! YOU CAN WIN A $100 GIFT CARD

I still remember the day I discovered there was a new record store in town.  These things don't happen nearly enough, so one tends to notice events like this.  Right off the bat I knew things were gonna be o.k., because I could get the Yoko Ono Rykodisc box USED.  Why the hell didn't I buy it?  One of many record regrets that will haunt me until my dying day.

So here were are in 2013 getting ready to celebrate the 20th birthday of Mankato's one and only independent record store.  Tune Town has been the site of a lot of great moments for me.  It's where I picked up my first Numero Records Compilation, where I bought Freaks & Geeks at midnight on the night of release, and had endless musical geek outs with the amazing staff.  It's where we met Carl and Dave, who also host Free Form Freakout.  And how could I forget all the EPIC Record Store Day experiences we have had there?  OR WHEN THE FLESHTONES PLAYED AN IN-STORE!

Here's what Carl has to say about the contest:

Just make sure our logo and 20 is on the design. Send us your design through FB, email, mail or just drop it off at the store. The deadline is sept. 20th!
