A Musical Countdown To Halloween Blog Post #15

I plead a whole lot of ignorance when it comes to the band Einstuerzende Neubauten, which translated from German to English means "Collapsing New Buildings". I of course am familiar with the band's cool logo, the cave painting of a person. It would show up painted on the back of someone's jean jacket or drawn on a patch back in the day. You might recognize it as well.

Last year Nick Cave sat down with Marc Maron for his WTF Podcast, and he told a story about this band that has stuck with me. At the time Nick Cave was in the band The Birthday Party along with Blixa Bargeld, vocalist and guitar player for Einsturzende Neubauten. He told of going into the studio where that band was working on recording an album. In one studio there was a dead animal of some kind that was being utilized for it's sonic qualities. Microphones were in and around the carcass, and the musicians were punching it in order to get the sound they desired. Apparently they'd been unable to find a willing participant to be punched over and over! Nick Cave said that Einstruzende Neubauten's  eccentric traits was even too out there for him, AND HE IS FRICKIN' NICK CAVE!

I came across this video of the band, and it caught my attention immediately. The found sounds they came up with certainly makes for some great Halloween background music!

You can listen to the entire podcast here at Marc Maron's WTF website - and you should, if only to hear Nick Cave's crazy fantastic screenplay for the follow-up to the film Gladiator!
