GRIND-FU TONIGHT! LEGENDARY BAD FILMS TO MAKE YOU LAUGH!

This is a Grind-Fu double bill that the gang has been dreaming of since virtually day one.  Grind-Fu presents two environmental disaster films that are so astonishingly BAD that they'll deliver a laughter apocalypse!

There was a time when the words "From the mind of M. Night Shyamalan" weren't followed by "you say that like it's a good thing"!  That time was LONG before the arrival of 2008's The Happening, starring Mark Wahlberg, Zoey Deschannel, John Leguizamo and a host of other actors that normally can be counted on to deliver a capable performance.  It's almost like their direction was "imagine that you're an acting robot... an acting robot that is terrified OF PLANTS!"  Yes, it's just that good.

The Grind-Fu gang has found great joy in watching the cinematic shame that is The Happening, and now they finally get to share it with you!  Just look at this picture:

RUN, MARK!  IT'S A PLANT!

Yes, you can thrill at HOURS of scenes just like this one, and they all came from THE MIND OF M. NIGHT SHYAMALAN!

The Happening is a big budget film by an arrogant Hollywood film maker, and that's part of where the perverse joy in its failure derives from.  Birdemic, on the other hand, is an entirely different bad film experience.  2010's Birdemic is a sincere attempt at environmental horror, and it stumbles and trips over itself from start to finish.  James Nguyen's terrifying vision of a world where nature strikes back is as low budget as it gets, and as low everything as it gets.  It's an unintentionally funny film, and that actually makes you kind of root for it.

Birdemic is in the same class as films like Plan 9 From Outer Space, where things like a lack of money and talent never get in the way of attempting a good story.  Despite its numerous shortcomings, Birdemic is an abundantly entertaining film, and you need to make a point of seeing it.  You will leave with a smile on your face, learn a little bit about ecology, and maybe... learn a little bit about yourself.

These films occupy spots one and two on Cracked's 7 Most Unintentionally Funny Movie of the Decade list!

I'm the new boy in town!  Where can I go?

Ladies and Gentlemen.........dig the hamster, MAN CAMP.

We just named the hamster that runs the fancy new texting machine that KMSU got.

We decided that his name is MAN CAMP.

Every time you text KMSU at 389 - 5678, a light flashes in a little room in the basement of the Alumni Foundation Building. MAN CAMP is trained to jump on his hamster wheel and start spinning. Your text then pops out of the texting machine on a tiny piece of paper (similar to a fortune cookie) and is funneled to us via an elaborate tunnel system similar to the one in the film Brazil.

MAN CAMP
Keep MAN CAMP occupied, otherwise he just sits idly by collecting stamps and shooting hoops.  Text KMSU at 389 - 5678.

anybody have one of these lying about?

LAST WEEK TO SUBMIT FOR THE SMASH HIT SONG OF THE SUMMER!

SMASH HIT SONG OF THE SUMMER!

It's that time of the year, and the deadline is drawing near!  We need your suggestions for Smash Hit Song of The Summer 2014!  E-mail us your suggestion or call us during the morning show and let us know what you want it to be!  Deadline for submission is Friday, May 30th (GRIND-FU EVE).  We'll vote all the next week, and we'll announce the winner by the end of the show on Friday, June 6th.

What exactly is a "smash hit song of the summer"? To be honest, it is difficult to nail down just exactly what it takes to transform an ordinary song into a "smash hit song of the summer". You kind of just know it when you hear it. You could picture it being a light-hearted affair, something that is mindless but catchy as hell.  The key word is catchy.  Past years have seen new songs selected as the SHSOTS, but the last couple of years have had older songs as contenders.  Last year's SHSOTS was off a Ktel album from the late seventies called Rock Fantasy.  Now THIS is a Smash Hit Song Of The Summer:

As you can see, Fantastic also has an official dance.

So send us your suggestions for Smash Hit Song of The Summer 2014! We'll have open voting the first week of June, and we'll declare YOUR SHSOTS on the 6th!  Then all you'll have to do is call/e-mail/text "Hey, play me that Smash Hit Song of The Summer" and we'll know exactly what you're talking about.  It's just that simple!

Here are Smash Hit Songs of The Summer from years gone by to give you an idea of what to look for...

BOB DYLAN (NOT HIS REAL NAME) TURNS 73 ON SATURDAY!

HEY!  Bob Dylan has a birthday this weekend!  How are you gonna celebrate it?  If you're a show on KMSU, you'll celebrate it by playing nothing but Bob this Friday! From six to nine a.m. we're going to play nothing but The Bard From the North Country, so be sure to send us your request.  We're pretty well stocked for the day, so go ahead and stump us!  Somebody always does, despite my decades long quest to try and get everything I can possibly get from the man.

KMSU will be playing him throughout the day, too, so continue listening until you can't stand it anymore.  Is there such a thing as too much Dylan on the radio?  I'm pretty sure... yeah, no.  No there isn't.

What's that you say?  A full day of Bob Dylan on the radio isn't enough for you?  How about OVER FOUR HOURS OF THE LAST WALTZ THAT YOU PROBABLY HAVE NEVER SEEN, LET ALONE HEARD?!!!  Sorry about the yelling.  I have the volume cranked as I watch it.  Dangerous Minds posted this a few days ago, and somehow it's still available to watch.  I don't know how long it will be, though.

This is the ENTIRE Last Waltz concert, including songs not available anywhere else.  Even better, it's the original soundboard recordings, so no overdubs here.  It's stunning.  We were listening to some of it at the station the other day, and it knocked us out.  You even get the full Dylan set (skip to the end of part three).  The video is solid, though it is from a single camera at the back of the room.  Bill Graham recorded all the shows that he produced, so this is most likely from the Winterland archives.

These guys really knew how to throw a farewell bash.

NOT ENOUGH?  WHY DO YOU GUYS HATE IDLE TIME SO MUCH?  How about some kick ass footage from the 1966 tour of England?  You know, the one where people were booing off the stage for going electric?  The guy's on fire in this footage, and most likely very high.  I'm talking to you, John Lennon footage!

HAPPY BIRFDAY, PETE!

Happy birthday to Mr. Pete Townshend!  Today would be a great day to start reading his autobiography.  It's a great read, full of humor and humility and history.  A great great rock and roll read.

The first place I ever saw the following clip was at the beginning of the AMAZING documentary "The Kids Are Alright".  It's a great collection of live clips from the band, who tended to own a stage when they hit it.  Violent and explosive and exciting.  Great stuff.

Also, check this out!  EARLY footage of The Who, all skinny and speeded out, live at a little hole in the wall.  Roger is wearing sunglasses because he just got socked in the face.  There's a whole lot of frantic energy in these fellas, and much of it chemically induced.  They're still a long way from stadiums and limos in this one.

Check it out, you guys!  Tune Town made its first ever TV ad!  Pretty cool, huh?

he's back!!

This isn't my first post about T.D. Mischke and I hope to hell it won't be my last, but today marks the return of his presence onto some sort of scene that requires a listening device of some form or other. After his retirement last year from radio, we know that it is not a return to that format that he inhabited for a couple of decades. Mischke is going back to something he tried once before with The City Pages. he is going to jump on the podcast bandwagon. I for one cannot be a happier camper, for I have missed that voice coming through my headphones and car radio. Now we can all check in with him on a weekly basis as he hits the road to find interesting people to talk with. The new podcast is appropriately called The Mischke Road Show.

This very much reminds me of the Interview Project that David Lynch did a number of years back, when he simply went cross country talking to anyone who looked like they could tell a story or two and was willing to share them. If you have never watched any of those - you really should look into them. HERE IS A LINK TO THE DAVID LYNCH INTERVIEW PROJECT. Nobody can interview people better than Mischke (well, maybe Terry Gross), and because of this I can't wait to hear about the mischief he gets up to and the new obsessions he explores. You can keep track of him at his new web site   http://mischkeroadshow.com/  You can download or listen to his podcasts from your computer, and you can also download them on iTunes. Just do a search for Mischke Road Show and subscribe - that way it will download automatically for you.

Best of luck on the road Mischko! I look forward to the next big adventure and Shuffle Functioneers if you see a man broke down on the side of the road that answers to Mischke be sure to help him out and get him back on his way. I and many more listeners will thank you in advance!

MORTON AND HAYES: A FORGOTTEN TV SHOW ABOUT FORGOTTEN COMEDIANS (UPDATED REPOST)

UPDATE: When this was originally posted last year there was only one episode of this amazing show online.  Since then the entire series has appeared, and our lives are better because of it.

22 years ago CBS aired a six episode Summer series that was guaranteed to fail.  Who on earth would run a show filmed in black and white that featured "lost" films from a forgotten comedy duo from the 1930s and expect that audiences at the butt end of the 20th century would embrace it?   The rating supported that suspicion, and the television series Morton and Hayes went on to become as forgotten as the comedy duo they cooked up for the show.

Here's the thing about Morton and Hayes:  It was really funny.  It perfectly captured the spirit of the era of comedy it set out to satirize.  Beyond that, it was presented by people like Rob Reiner, Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, Catherine O'Hara, Joe Flaherty, and Allison Janney.  The people that put it together really know comedy, and they understood the genre they were tackling.

Morton and Hayes will likely never see a video release, which is unfortunate.  I have a VHS of all six episodes taped from the original broadcast, but that doesn't do you guys any good.  Thankfully youtube has FINALLY unleashed the entire run of shows on us, so get ready to waste time!

Native Boy - get a box of tissues folks!

Native Boy: The Film from Native Boy on Vimeo.

Last year Tim and I were asked if we would be judges for the first Speechless Film Festival at Bethany. This meant watching an awful lot of movies, both short, full length, good and not so good. Without a doubt, the film above, Native Boy by Henry Roosevelt, was our favorite. There will be no "spoilers for The Grey" here. It is a beautiful film and the story telling is exquisite, but I am serious about the need for tissues. By the end of it I was sobbing uncontrollably. It's not a bad sobbing jag (if that makes sense) so don't let that stop you from watching it. Before I sign off - some of this was shot in Minnesota, so you may recognize the scenery. Enjoy!
