The September Grind-Fu double bill lets us check another lineup off our cinematic bucket list!  We've been dreaming of this one for a while, and now it's finally happening.  We're dedicating an evening of film to Warren Oates, featuring two of his most legendary roles.  First on the bill is Monte Hellman's counter culture classic Two Lane Blacktop...

The movie follows two gear heads (Dennis Wilson and James Taylor) as they travel Route 66.  Along the way the encounter Warren Oates, and a rivalry develops.  The film is very minimalist, with limited dialogue, yet it presents a captivating portrait of lost and lonely characters out on the road.  It has become a classic road film, and was included for preservation in the National Film Registry in 2012.

Next up is Sam Peckinpah's Bring Me The Head Of Alfredo Garcia...

They say there's no such thing as bad publicity.  United Artists milked that idea by incorporating the negative reaction that Alfredo Garcia generated into its advertising campaign.  Bring Me The Head Of Alfredo Garcia is dark, violent, gruesome, and nihilistic.  Warren Oates' desperate and haunted portrayal of Bennie has been seen as more than a little autobiographical on Sam Peckinpah's part.  Peckinpah was known for his drink and his penchant for violence, and Oates' character has all of that and more.

But back to the advertising campaign...

Critical reaction was extremely negative, and the film was a major flop.  The performance of Bring Me The Head Of Alfredo Garcia essentially ruined Sam Peckinpah's career.  Despite this, the film has become a cult classic.  Roger Ebert gave it five stars and said:

I think I can feel Sam Peckinpah's heart beating and head pounding in every frame in ''Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia'' (1974), a film he made during a period of alcoholic fear and trembling.... I sense that the emotional weather on the set seeped onto the screen, haunting it with a buried level of passion. If there is anything to the auteur theory, then ''Alfredo Garcia'' is the most autobiographical film Peckinpah ever made.

If it truly is an autobiographical film, then Sam Peckinpah was one F'd up dude.

I feel like I haven't fully expressed just how violent this film is.  SPOILER ALERT FOR THE GREY!  Here's a YouTube clip that will get that point across.

It's gonna be a provocative evening of movies this September, and we hope you guys will join us!  Remember, Grind-Fu Cinema is TOTALLY FREE!  Bring your friends, bring some snacks, and join us for a night of Warren Oates classics!

GRIND-FU CINEMA TOMORROW NIGHT!

Grind-Fu Cinema presents
Rich Kronfeld Night!
LET'S BOWL
and
SIX DAYS IN ROSWELL
Saturday, August 30th @ 7:00pm
Wiecking 220 Auditorium
Minnesota State University, Mankato
FREE! FREE! FREE! FREE! FREE!

The last Saturday in August get all tribute-y, as Grind-Fu Cinema salutes Minnesota hero Rich Kronfeld!  Rich has been a comedy presence in Minnesota for a few decades, and you've probably seen him before with even knowing it.  Maybe you know him as Doctor Sphincter from Twin Cities public access television?

or perhaps you saw him in the movie Trekkies?

Well, you've surely seen him on Comedy Central's Let's Bowl, right?

Well, if you haven't seen him on Let's Bowl, we'll remedy that for you on Saturday, August 30th!  We'll be showing selected episodes of Let's Bowl, which was a hilarious hybrid of Bowling For Dollars and People's Court.  Two people would come in with a grievance and settle it on the lanes, with the winner of the game winning the grievance.  It was all very serious and binding.  Not really.

As if that wasn't enough, we'll be following Let's Bowl with a fantastic movie featuring Rich called Six Days In Roswell.  Rich road trips to Roswell, New Mexico, to see what the big deal is about the alien crash that happened there decades ago.  He takes in the sights, talks to believers, and talks to some high profile experts, too.  It's a really funny movie, but everything that Rich does is amazingly funny.

Join us on Saturday, August 30th for this great night of comedy.  And remember:  GRIND-FU CINEMA IS ALWAYS FREE!  Bring your friends, bring some snacks, and join us for a fantastic night of film.

I'm the new boy in town!  Where can I go?

FRIDAY 8/29: HALF JAPANESE AND STERLING MORRISON

HEY!  This Friday between seven and eight we're gonna be playing the entire new album from Half Japanese!  It's really wonderful stuff, so don't miss out.  Full of hooky guitar and remarkable Jad Fair vocals.  It comes out on Tuesday, so pick it up at a classic record store near you!

========================================================

In other news, Saturday is also the 19th anniversary of the death of Sterling Morrison.  Expect a bunch of Velvet Underground on Friday, but be sure to request any faves.  You know you wanna.

The following clip is of the final performance of the Velvet Underground, when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 96.  They're performing a song called Last Night I Said Goodbye To My Friend that they wrote for Sterling.  I remember hearing about it at the time, but I've never seen a good clip of the performance until now.  They never recorded it together, though Moe Tucker did put it out on one of her albums.  It's a pretty touching song, and I believe it's the only time that these three shared vocal responsibilities.

ROBIN WILLIAMS ON LOUIE

We went on about Robin Williams quite a bit this morning on the show.  It seems inconceivable, right?  I haven't been a big follower of his career for quite a while, but the last thing I saw him in was unbelievably epic.  It was at the beginning of an episode of Louie, where he plays himself.  He meets Louie at a funeral for a friend, and it touches on some themes that seem pretty poignant at times like this.  Especially the last part of the scene.  Damn.

Ignore the random footage at the end of this clip and just focus on the Louie clip.  It's pretty great.

AUGUST 16th: THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED AGAIN

This Saturday is the anniversary of Elvis' death, and we make a point of paying tribute to him when that day roles around.  Since it's a Saturday we're going to do our tribute on Friday, so if you have any songs you'd like us to play you should let us know!  He's The King, after all.  Call us during the Morning Show at 389-5678 or 1-800-456-7810, or drop us an e-mail at shufflefunction@hotmail.com.  Thanks, gang!

R.I.P Robin Williams

The news world is buzzing with word of Robin William's passing. It certainly comes as a shock to us all. I grew up adoring his work in Mork and Mindy, in fact I owned a pair of rainbow suspenders that I actually wore out in public on occasion. When his HBO special came out in the early 80's I would watch it over and over and over again. My sisters and I would laugh and laugh, and say in unison the lines that we'd come to memorize with all of our repeat views. Over the years I admit to losing interest in his stand up, but I will never forget the countless laughs he gave me back then.

I will always love Robin William's portrayal of Garp in the film based on John Irving's book The World According To Garp. I have read that book maybe five times in my life and I will always associate him with that character. In fact this movie also features one of the few times that I loved John Lithgow in a film!

It's definitely a sad day.

MANCAMP LIVES HERE!

This morning our Program Director was Shelley's twin sister Stacey.  Also on board was their niece Emma.  Emma just got a hamster, so much of our off-mic conversation was about Mancamp, the hamster that runs the texting machine up here at 89.7 The Maverick.  We always talk about how he lives in the basement of the building where the wheel that powers the texting machine is, but I don't think we've ever talked about the entrance to his quarters.  This is the door to Mancamp's home.  I think he must have had a late night, because he didn't even touch the cake and coffee I left for him.

Anyway, don't forget to text your requests to us at 389-5678!  It keeps Mancamp gainfully employed.

NEW HALF JAPANESE ON THE WAY!

Hey, there's a new Half Japanese record coming out!  It's their first collection of songs in 13 years, and my guess is it's just the tonic we need for these troubled times.  You can pre-order it now from Joyful Noise, and then expect it on your doorstep around September 2nd.  While you wait, here's a great short film that Joyful Noise put out about the release, featuring some pretty heavy hitters talking about how exciting this new album is gonna be.  KILL SOME TIME NOW!

BONUS! Jad Fair with Moe Tucker doing The Velvets! Arguably the superior version of this song...

This Friday, August 8th, we'll be giving away passes to see this hilarious event.  MST3K and Rifftrax are funny on the small screen at home, but in a theater full of movie geeks it's next level funny.  Listen to the Morning Show for your chance to win!

WIN COOL COMIC BOOK STUFF ON WEDNESDAY!

Many of you guys know that my day job to support my radio habit is at Barnes & Noble in Mankato.  It's a kick ass job, and they're cool about me having to do the show in the morning.  I'm forever grateful for that.  Barnes & Noble is doing something pretty cool over the next couple weeks called "Get Pop Cultured", and stores around the country are having events with exclusive giveaways and contests related to various pop culture events.  There's some neat stuff, too, and that thrills me.

Anyway, one of the fortuitous things about being connected to both the radio show and the store is that it has put me in the position to get some great stuff to give away to listeners like you!  Over the last couple of weeks we gave away some great DC and Marvel stuff, and this week Shuffle Function has even more.

In honor of Barnes & Noble's Get Pop Cultured promotions, we're giving away a couple of amazing action figures.  That's happening this Wednesday, August 6th.  Check out these puppies:

THE TECHNICALITIES:
  • Because of the size and weight of these items, we are unable to mail them.  YOU WILL HAVE TO COME UP TO KMSU to collect your prize!  Sorry, gang.  Still, free comic book stuff, huh?
  • KMSU hosts, volunteers, and their family members are not eligible to win these awesome things.  If they were, I would be the first one to call.
  • If you won over the last two weeks, you cannot win this week!  Sorry, but we gotta give everybody a shot at these.
I'll give all the details for winning on Wednesday morning, so tune in!  Also, I WILL BE ALONE DURING THE SHOW, so cut me some slack with the phone answering and all.  I'll do the best I can.

OTHER COOL STUFF:
Like I said, there's a lot of cool stuff that Barnes & Noble has available to folks during their "Get Pop Cultured" promotion.  All the events at the Mankato store are available HERE!

Thanks for listening, you guys!
