We're roughly $600 shy of hitting $30,000, and there's only three days left in the drive.  That's super intimidating, but we're giving it our all.  The overall goal is $40,000, and we need to hit it to get the transmitter.  Making the $30,000 mark would be massive, both financial and team spirit-wise.  Please consider donating now!  We're looking for new members, renewing members, and folks that can maybe spare a little bit more.  We'd love to hear from you!  Any amount makes a massive difference.

Monday, April 27, 2015

What a tremendous start to the pledge drive!  The marathon was a blast, and by the end of it KMSU has raised over $26,000!  THANK YOU!  We're entering the final five days of the drive, and we still have a long way to go, so please consider pledging if you haven't already done so.  If you have pledged - first off, thank you! - and you can spare a little more, we'd be totally and completely grateful.  You guys are all radio heroes, and during this last stretch we're hoping to hear from as many of you as possible!  507-389-5678 or 1-800-456-7810 are the numbers to call and make a difference.

As you have no doubt heard, and will continue to hear, KMSU desperately needs to raise money to get a new transmitter.  The one we have is on its last legs and we can't even get new parts for it.  THE GOOD NEWS:  By hitting this pledge drive goal we'll FINALLY have the money needed to get this thing!  It has been our main mission and goal over the last several years, and that transmitter is within our reach.  This is an exciting prospect, and the entire reason we are this close is because of the amazing generosity from listeners like you.  You guys are the best, and don't for a minute think we aren't grateful for all you do.  Everybody at KMSU sings your praises.  You are the best.

THE BAD NEWS:  Without your financial support we cannot continue to bring you the unique local programming you've come to know and love, and we won't be able to get the necessary gear we need to keep broadcasting.  Keep in mind that not only do your pledges help keep us on the air, but they also act as a vote of confidence in the station.  The University notices these things.  This is huge in an era of budget cuts.  It shows the folks that run the works that KMSU is valued by you and that we're an asset to the community.

Any amount makes a huge difference, but we have some great swag available at different pledge levels to hopefully nudge you towards making a contribution.  And now...

Mr. Specific strikes again with another DVD featuring his unique video forays into the fringes of society, and this one promises to be the creepiest yet!  Every Spring, just in time for pledge drive, a nondescript brown paper bag with an unmarked DVD arrives at the Shuffle Function office door.  Don't miss out on the 8th weird installment!

We've had a lot of fun shirts over the years, but this one takes the cake.  Conceived in a fever dream of Shelley's and brought to life by amazing artist Kaitlin Baumann, this shirt is crawling with Shuffle Function fanaticism for all things bizzaro.  Check out these details!

Kaitlin dun good.  All the cool kids will be wearing the new shirt, so obviously that means you!  Available in S to 2XL.

$50 - KMSU HAT

For only $50 you can wear your KMSU pride dramatically on your noggin!  This hat features the KMSU logo across the front, and comes in Small/Medium and Large/Extra Large.  It's a nice classy grey, so it goes with casual togs or with that tux/gown you're gonna be wearing to the opera.  Fits on even the biggest head!

For the thrifty listener who wants to save a buck but score some sweet premiums!  You will receive the new Shuffle Function t-shirt PLUS the Crypt of Underground Neanthropic Television #8 DVD.  It doesn't take a math genius to see that this is one heck of a deal!

KMSU is one of the rare spots on the dial to carry World Cafe, and this CD collects some of the recent amazing in-studio performances from both old and new musical favorites!

The Cadillac of premiums, this allows you to join us during the morning show for two hours and control the playlist!  You bring your music collection and get to play DJ and we just push buttons and talk too much.  With this you also get the brand new Shuffle Function t-shirt, the new Crypt of Underground Neanthropic Television #8 DVD, and CD copy of your two hours of radio infamy to share with family and friends.

When it comes to the British Invasion the most common question asked is Beatles or Stones?  First off, why would you have to chose, and second off, HOW ARE YOU LEAVING OUT THE KINKS?!!  Sure, they didn't dominate the top of the U.S. charts like those bands, but their catalog is loaded with hits, and the rewards for exploring their catalog are profound.  Perhaps it's because they are often overlooked when considering the major impact of the British Invasion, but their body of work is filled with new favorite songs just waiting to be discovered.  We want you guys to discover these songs, too.

This Spring we're offering a collection of music from The Kinks that will cover all the bases and provide you with some of the most essential and influential music in popular music.  The music of The Kinks is catchy, tuneful, hilarious, and often bitingly observant.  Ray Davies is one of those song writers that you may not have heard of, but the musicians you love most certainly have, and his songs left a deep impression.  And let's not forget about Dave Davies.  His guitar playing is killer!  As David Lee Roth once said, "Without The Kinks there would be no air guitar."  One listen to You Really Got Me is all the evidence that statement needs to back it up.

For a pledge of $100 you will get Essential Kinks, as well as last year's deluxe reissue of their classic Muswell HillbilliesEssential Kinks is a stellar career overview of the band, and it's filled with all the hits and hidden gems you'll need to become a died in the wool Kinks fan.  Muswell Hillbillies was ignored by the public when it came out in 1971, but has since become regarded as a milestone in their career.  Its view on a changing world is just as relevant today as it was then, and it has had a tremendous influence on Americana music.  Muswell Hillbillies features bonus tracks, plus a companion DVD featuring great BBC TV performances from the era.  Don't go another day without letting The Kinks into your life!

You can sponsor an entire day of radio on KMSU with this premium.  Commemorate a birthday or anniversary, surprise the music geek in your life, treat the new graduate, or celebrate the music of your favorite musician!  These are just a few ways that you can use a KMSU Day Sponsorship.  A personalized message will also be read throughout the day so the whole world knows that you are a super cool person that supports independent radio!

There's the swag!  Drop us a line with questions, but most of all drop us a line with your support! Remember, the 2015 Pledge Drive THIS WEDNESDAY at six a.m.!  Give early and give often!  We are counting on you!

CALL 389-5678 OR  1-800-456-7810 AND MAKE YOUR PLEDGE, OR MAKE YOUR DONATION ONLINE!  (Don't forget to specify KMSU as your pledge recipient!)

Thanks for being the best listeners in the world!

This Wednesday a bunch of show hosts will be hijacking KMSU for a record party!   From six to ten on April 29th you'll get folks from all over the schedule stopping by to spin some favorite records and hopefully convince you to contribute to the big cause.  We did this last Spring and it was a lot of fun, so we hope you'll tune in and see what the hosts are up to.

LISTENERS = YOU.  APPRECIATION SHOW = KILLER LIVE MUSIC FOR FREE.  Put them together and you have the formula for a buttload of fun. KMSU is throwing a party at Patricks on 3rd and you're all invited.  Two great bands will be playing, and you're not going to want to miss them.  Click the link and check out the lineup.  We want to celebrate the conclusion of the pledge drive, but mostly we want to celebrate YOU GUYS for being the best listeners any station ever had.  Seriously, let us thank you in person.

The Kinks Tribute From the Twin Cities
Full On Gram Parsons Tribute from 'Kato

Saturday, May 2nd from 8 to Midnight
Patricks On 3rd
125 South 3rd Street, Saint Peter, MN

Have we told you lately how cool you guys are?  I feel like we haven't told you enough.  YOU GUYS ARE COOL!  Super cool.  That's why KMSU is throwing a little post-pledge drive fiesta to say thank you for all your support.  Join us at Patricks on 3rd in Saint Peter for a great night of live music.  Two great bands FOR FREE!

Kinda Kinky is a four piece band outta The Twin Cities.  They rock the hell out of the music of The Kinks.  We saw them play at a benefit show about a month ago, and they were amazing.  They feature alumni from some killer bands:  The Spectors, The Floorshakers, The Mighty Mofos, and Moody Daughters to name a few.  They're so much fun, and their set list is vast and diverse.  They cover all the eras of the band, and they do it well.  DON'T MISS OUT!

We don't have any photos of The Gram Parsons Project because... well, we don't.  But we do have pictures of The Frye (are you hip to The Frye?) and Ann and Joe are two key players in the band.  You already know that The Frye do amazing covers of Gram Parsons songs, and now you can hear them do it with a full band behind them!  Pretty cool, huh?  Also, this is the first ever gig for The Gram Parsons Project, so get out there and cheer them on!  We're lucky to have them!

The whole thing goes down on Saturday, May 2nd at Patricks on 3rd in St. Peter.  Admission is free!  You just need to be willing to have a great time, which shouldn't be too much of a problem.  Get together with lots of amazing KMSU listeners and hosts, and let's celebrate this amazing radio gem that we have!

If you have any questions, drop us an e-mail at  We'll see you there!

Bruce Lee was one of the biggest stars in the world at the time of his death.  When he died there was a massive void in the martial arts film industry, and there was no shortage of people looking to cash in on it.  Celebrity death has always led to people looking to make a quick buck, and in this case it led to an entire new genre of film:  Bruceploitation.

What is Bruceploitation?  Bruceploitation is a genre that was created for the sole purpose of cashing in on the death of Bruce Lee.  Actors were given stage names similar to Bruce's and movies were given similar titles to his films on the off chance that moviegoers would throw a few dollars away on their product.  Those moviegoers were, more often than not, disappointed.

Notable Bruceploitation actors:
Bruce Li
Bruce Lai
Bruce Le
Bruce Lei
Bruce Lie
Bruce Liang
Bruce Leung
Bruce Ly
Bruce Thiang
Bruce Lea
Brute Lee
Lee Bruce
Myron Bruce Lee (Myron Bruce Lee?  I guess there are only so many variations.)

Notable Bruceploitation films:
Re-Enter the Dragon
Enter Two Dragons
Return of Bruce
Enter Another Dragon
Return of the Fists of Fury
Enter the Game of Death
Bruce Lee's Secret
Exit the Dragon, Enter the Tiger
The Clones of Bruce Lee
The Dragon Lives Again (Bruce vs James Bond and Dracula!)
Bruce Lee Fights Back From the Grave

Come up with a title, throw a Dragon in there, and you've got yourself a film.

The Bruceploitation flick we're interested in is Fist of Fear, Touch of Death.  Made in 1980, it centers around the 1979 World Karate Championships, which were supposed to determine the successor to Bruce Lee.  That's a pretty flimsy premise for an extremely muddled film that mixes reenactments, badly spliced and dubbed interviews, conspiracy theory, and a questionable biography of Bruce Lee.  To make things even worse, it takes about 45 minutes somewhere in the middle of things to insert old footage of Bruce Lee and scenes from Chinese Kung Fu films in a weak attempt to tell Lee's story.

It's all very confusing, and not at all good, but it makes for some incredibly insane movie viewing.  Fist of Fear, Touch of Death is not supposed to be funny, but it turned out to be pretty damn hilarious.

Join us on Saturday, April 25th, as we watch Fist of Fear, Touch of Death, along with the immortal film The Guy From Harlem (which we're screening for the fifth year in a row!)  Both of them are mind-numbingly bad, but you're gonna have a great time watching them.

With second exciting feature

Saturday, April 25th @ 7:00pm

I'm the new boy in town!  Where can I go?

Cosmic Slim Ra (aka Gary Campbell aka Maverick Slim) suggested folks go to YouTube and check out all the remarkable clips of Sun Ra and the Arkestra.  One thing that he spoke highly of is a documentary that came out in 1980 called A Joyful Noise.  The title comes from an encounter Sun Ra had with the police, who went to his apartment to answer a noise complaint.  Ra pointed out that what he was making was a Joyful Noise, because that's what the bible told folks to do.

For your convenience, here's A Joyful Noise.

NOTE:  These passes will be digital, meaning we will need your e-mail to give them to you.  You can print them out or use a smartphone to gain entry via a QR code.  These passes are non-transferrable and winners must show their ID at the box office to receive the tickets.  There can be no names left at will call for this event.

Michael J. Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbert (all of Mystery Science Theater 3000 fame) will be taking on the "film" The Room. If you have had the pleasure of seeing this movie, you know that this will be a Riff not to be missed.  In fact, this might be the best way ever for your to experience a film like The Room. These tickets are going to go fast! The first five lucky listeners to pledge $50 or more will get to laugh their way through this horrifically bad movie. Six months ago the Mankato Free Press ran a story about the Halloween Grind-Fu Cinema, and this morning they have a great article about the 24 Hour Pledge Drive A-Go-Go, which begins tonight at six p.m.  The photo that accompanies both articles was taken six months ago, and yet I'm somehow wearing THE EXACT SAME THING today.  This was not planned.  I just love my Replacements shirt.

Anyway, tune in tonight to The Shuffle Function 24 Hour Pledge Drive A-Go-Go!  We have a lot of stuff planned, including Radio Roulette at nine p.m. tonight and noon tomorrow.  Stay up as long as you can, and please pledge!  It's gonna be fun.

The Shuffle Function 24 Hour Pledge Drive A Go Go is TONIGHT!  We have loads of stuff planned for the week of the marathon, but we also have quite a bit scheduled for those 24 hours that we'll be lieve on the air!  Here's a handy schedule so that you can plan your sleep accordingly:

Thursday, April 23rd @ nine p.m. and Friday, April 24th at noon!

The game so nice we play it twice!  Tune in for two intense rounds of Shuffle Function Radio Roulette.  We draw numbers to pick the record we play, flip a coin to select the side, and roll a ten sided die to determine the song we play. IT'S COMPLETELY RANDOM RADIO!  We have no idea what the radio gods have in store for us.  Sometimes it's one of the greatest hours of radio ever produced, and other times it makes you curse the birth of Marconi.  Either way, Radio Roulette is full of surprises, so don't miss it!

Friday, April 24th @ two a.m.

Why two a.m.?  Because two a.m. is the perfect time for Jandek, whose songs can inhabit that murky and mysterious hour, and they take you to a haunted and personal place.  We've been featuing Jandek: Sounds Of Insomnia for a number of years now, and it's always one of our favorite parts of the marathon.  We turn off all the lights in the station, and we've left only with the faint flow of the control board and the strobe of the telephone when it rings.  We encourage you guys to tune in, particularly if you aren't already a Jandek initiate.  This could be the time that it all finally clicks.

This year we're featuring a recording that we've never played during Sounds Of Insomnia.  We think it's one of Jandek's most powerful and intimate performances, and its' the one that convinced Shelley that she needed to purchase everything in Jandek's catalog.  Seriously, it's great stuff.

Friday, April 24th from four to six a.m.

Two years we set an hour for Gary Campbell (aka Maverick Slim) to come in and do an all Sun Ra set, but an hour just wasn't enough time.  That's why we've set aside TWO HOURS for Sunrise With Sun Ra!  It's a great way to get your bearings before we head into...

Friday, April 24th from six to ten a.m.

We are going to play nothing but vinyl for four hours Friday morning!  It wakes us up, plus it gives us a chance to dig into some things that might not normally make the playlist.  Both Shelley and myself have been working to find some real gems, in addition to any Record Store Day finds, to play for you guys that morning, and hopefully they will convince you that KMSU is a pretty special place on the radio dial.

At some point we'll also be doing the MacArthur Park sing along, so start flexing those pipes and get ready for the broadway style breakdown!

Friday, April 24th @ 1p.m

Are you kids hip to The Frye?  You will be soon! Ann and Joe will be joining us for an hour of special pledge related programming.  They'll be singing favorites, and spinning a few favorites, too.  Check them out on the interwebs and the Facebooks!!

Friday, April 24th from 2 to 6p.m.

From here on out its us desperately clawing for the finish line!  At this point caffeine is a joke, and the only thing that will help us is your donations!  CALL AND PLEDGE!  And guess what?  Your call may be taken by a real live MAD Girl!  We'll have some Mankato Area Derby Girls at the station taking calls, and we'll try and talk them into hyping their big bout on the 25th!  Tune in and pledge!

Drop us a line if you have any questions!
