Today's blogpost is all about the amazing Grind-Fu Cinema marathon that we have planned for this month. It's the final Grind-Fu of the season, PLUS it's the Halloween edition, which means there's going to be all kinds of gruesome... plus cake!
Here are the start times for the films so you can plan accordingly. You should really catch the whole day, but if you can only make one or two that's okay. We'll still be your movie friends.
ALL START TIMES ARE APPROXIMATE! Math is hard...
NOON - HERSCHELL GORDON LEWIS: GODFATHER OF GORE
This 2010 documentary about the life and movies of Herschell Gordon Lewis is really fun to watch. HG Lewis has had a fascinating career, and he really knows how to make a dollar. From the early advertising days, though the nudie cuties, and on to the legendary works of horror he created, Lewis' ideas have had a major impact on film, whether he intended them to or not. They may not be the greatest films in the world, but they sure are fun!
1967's Blast-Off Girls is a crazy trip into the ethically challenged music business. We see Boojie Baker, a music manager and svengali, discover a band and shape them into a hit making machine. The band is beside the point, because Boojie's in it for the cash and the power. If you took a rock and roll movie and ran it through a strainer, the pure stuff that runs through it would be A Hard Day's Night, and the crud left in the strainer would be Blast-Off Girls.
The band in the film is The Faded Blue from Chicago, and the music's pretty good. One major claim to fame is that the movie also features a cameo by Kentucky Fried Chicken's Colonel Sanders. Sanders was apparently a real pain, and he wanted to direct his own scene. In any case, I think H.G. Lewis got KFC to feed his cast.
3:40 - SOMETHING WEIRD
The psychedelic and psychic worlds collide in this crazy LSD-sploitation film from 1967. A man suffers a horrible electrical accident that leaves him disfigured, but also leaves him with psychic abilities. He strikes a deal with a hideously ugly witch who agrees to restore his looks on the condition that he becomes her lover. While the rest of the world sees her as a breathtaking beauty, his psychic abilities mean that he still only sees her real appearance.
It all goes down hill from there.
Around 5:00pm we'll have an intermission so folks can stretch there legs, grab some food, and go get any special Grind-Fu Cinema cakes they may have laying around. Be sure to come back, though, because you don't want to miss...
7:00 - BLOOD FEAST
This is it! The big daddy, the numero uno, the Gone With The Wind of splatter movies! Blood Feast is by no means the best horror movie ever made, but it is unquestionably the first splatter movie ever made. Many films may have crossed the line of what might be tasteful to show in a movie, but this was the first film to say "Lines are stupid. Here's a bunch of blood and entrails."
Blood Feast has been a favorite of Shyboy Tim's since he purchased a used big box VHS of it at a video store when he was in high school. From there on out he's been an unapologetic Herschell Gordon Lewis fan. Don't even try to get him to apologize for it. The heart wants what it wants.
Yes, Blood Feast is gory, but it's all relative. Some films spare no expense, but when you don't have the money to spend you find ways around it. Butcher shop leftovers and mannequin parts have their big day on the screen in this one. Acting ability would be nice, but it was clearly not required. What you need to really know is that THIS IS A FUN MOVIE. This is the one you need to make a point of catching.
8:10 - GRIND-FU CAKE
Because Halloween is our favorite holiday around these parts, and because the Halloween Grind-Fu is the biggest shindig of the film season, we go over the top and bring you the weirdest cakes you will ever see. Each and every one has been made with deranged love by Amber, our cake artist. The creations she has made for Grind-Fu have gotten her international acclaim, and she has gotten to work with some really cool organizations as a result. Check out some of her masterpieces:
Come for the movies but stay for the cake, you guys!
8:35 - THE WIZARD OF GORE
The Wizard of Gore is the story of Montag the Magnificent, a magician that performs horrific magic tricks on volunteers from the audience. Really horrible things are depicted, and then afterwards the person seems fine. Later, however, the volunteer dies from the same horrible thing that was depicted in the magic trick. Two people that attended Montag's shows start to think there's a connection. DO YOU THINK?!!!
The Wizard of Gore came out in 1970, and by this time EVERYBODY was cashing in on the gore genre that Herschell Gordon Lewis created. What you see in The Wizard of Gore is H.G. Lewis upping his game, and working to out-gore the others. THIS IS A GROSS MOVIE. Again, is it high quality? No. But man... it's really gross. You've been warned.
THIS IS THE FINAL GRIND-FU OF 2015!
Don't miss this colossally fun day of movies! It's free, for crying out loud, plus there's cake! Bring your friends, bring some snacks, AND COME IN COSTUME, for a really fun day of movies. Drop us an e-mail at email@example.com if you have any questions.
