The Legendary Stardust Cowboy turns 68 years old in less than a week!

I think that Andrew Pejack says it short and sweet - PUT A CARD IN THE MAIL! A big thanks to all of you who have already done so. We brought a big card up to Grind-Fu Cinema last night, and we got a bunch of signatures. We plan on taking that card with us to the State Fair too. But honestly, the more cards and letters that The Ledge receives the better. He loves hearing from his fans. Don't believe me? Then why would he throw paper plates with his mailing address out at his concerts?

He doesn't own a computer, he only utilizes snail mail. I know that sitting down to write a letter and then dropping it in the mailbox takes up more time than simply writing "Happy Birthday" on a facebook page, but please make the effort. I feel like The Ledge is a part of my family, and I know that many of you feel the same way, so let's put a smile on his face and shower him with birthday greetings!

Thank you Radio Heroes! Oh - if you receive a reply back from the Legendary Stardust Cowboy, and you feel like sharing it with us, please drop us an email and include a picture if you can. We love seeing what he has sent back to his fans!

  and

FREE! FREE! FREE! FREE! FREE!

Grind-Fu gets all moody and atmospheric for August!  Get ready for two amazing Film Noir movies FOR FREE!  Let's take a look at what's on deck this month:

THE HITCH-HIKER (1953)
Directed by Ida Lupino

One of the taglines used to promote The Hitch-Hiker was "When was the last time you invited death into your car?"  For me it would be never, but the folks in this movie weren't so lucky.  Directed by actress Ida Lupino, The Hitch-Hiker is based off a true story of abduction and murder that took place in 1950.  The details of the real case were so gruesome that Lupino had to tone the movie down just to appease the censors.

The Hitch-Hiker is a real chiller, and it's a thrill to share it with the Grind-Fu audience.  FYI, in 1998 it was added to the national Film Registry as a film that needs to be preserved.  Not too shabby!

SUDDENLY (1954)
Directed by Lewis Allen

We all know Old Blue Eyes is the Chairman of the Board and force to be reckoned with, and now here's your chance to see him play a cold blooded killer.  Frank Sinatra plays a kill crazy criminal with his crosshairs on the President of the United States.  He takes over the home of a family in the city that the President is passing through and puts his plan into action.

The story goes that Lee Harvey Oswald saw Suddenly on TV a few nights before the assassination of President Kennedy, but conspiracy obsessive are unable to find a TV station in the Dallas area around that time that screened the film.  Another story goes that Sinatra was so devastated by the similarities between Suddenly and Kennedy's assassination that he had the film pulled from circulation, and eventually it lapsed into the public domain.  Frank's family, however, has gone to great lengths to deny that there is any truth to this.

Join us on Saturday, August 29th, for another great Grind-Fu Cinema!  Bring your friends, bring snacks, and get ready to enjoy a couple of great films FOR FREE!  Send any questions you may have to shufflefunction@hotmail.com.  See you there!

I'm the new boy in town! Where can I go?

A MUSIC GEEK HEADS UP SHUFFLE FUNCTIONEERS!

My deluxe Yo La Tengo "Stuff Like That There" set arrived in the mail today from Matador Records, and I am a happy camper. I just sent a text to Shyboy Tim asking if he'd be up for playing the entire album on tomorrow morning's Shuffle Function radio show, and he replied "HELL YES!". That's exactly how I feel about it. If you listen to the radio show, you know how much I love this band - in fact I declared them my favorite band last year, a title not given lightly. We have also made it our mission to play Yo La Tengo every morning on the show, and being 8 months into the year I think we have only missed maybe ten mornings. Right now I find myself  in the midst of that wonderful agony of  wanting to listen to it right freakin' now yet wanting to wait and listen to it with all of you on the air tomorrow. It's requiring all my will power to not flip the record on to my turntable right now. But I love being able to listen to albums and music like this with all of you, sharing that experience together like we are all sitting in bean bag chairs at one big record listening party. And so I will wait. But this isn't cheating, Yo La Tengo released this teaser video a few weeks back. So posting their cover of The Cure's tune "Friday I'm In Love" will help tide me over until tomorrow morning's radio show.

We will play Yo La Tengo's new album in it's entirety and on vinyl tomorrow morning in the second hour of the show, after 7 a.m. You can tune in at 89.7 fm or listen in on-line at www.kmsu.org This is going to be a blast, and I invite you all to join us! SUPER SECRET NOTE: if we can figure out how, we will also play the cassette only bonus tracks!

CONTEST: DESIGN THE KMSU FALL PLEDGE DRIVE SHIRT!

DESIGN THE NEXT KMSU SHIRT!

CALLING ALL ARTSY KMSU LISTENERS! Have you ever dreamed of having your artistic vision splashed across the chests of discriminating radio listners? Sure, we all have. KMSU is looking for a new design for the Fall 2015 KMSU shirt/sweatshirt, and we'd like to give you that chance to design it!

Feel free to go nuts. This will be the identity for KMSU for the Fall pledge drive, so we're looking for something that is dynamic and will get listeners excited. KMSU staff will look over the submissions to select a winner, and that design will be splashed all over KMSU swag. Very exciting stuff.

The winner will get the swag that KMSU puts out with the design, PLUS they'll be loaded up with lots of cool music. It'll be pretty sweet.

REQUIREMENTS
  1. THE DESIGN MUST BE ORIGINAL. It cannot include ANY copyrighted images.
  2. The Design cannot be wider than 9” across.
  3. The design must include the words “Minnesota State University, Mankato” somewhere in the design. You can also include the Minnesota State University, Mankato logo, if you would like.
  4. It would be great if the number of colors used is minimal. Each color screen costs extra, and KMSU is a Mom and Pop radio station. Gotta pinch those pennies!
  5. The color purple must be incorporated into the shirt somewhere. This could be the shirt color, or it could be in the design. It just has to be in there somewhere.
  6. The shirt must be in one of these colors: white, natural/off-white, sand, tan, ice gray/light gray, gravel/medium gray, charcoal, black, purple or gold.
  7. Digital art must be at least 350ppi resolution. Acceptable file types: Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, PDF (Portable Document Format)
  8. RAW, Tiff and EPS file types are recommended.
  9. It would be best if the design was not dated in some way. For instance, it could only be used in the Fall if it says “Fall Pledge Drive”, but it it's just a design that expresses the station image it could be used over and over. A design that could be reused would be best.
  10. It must clearly say “KMSU” and 89.7fm on it. Other station designs have also integrated KMSK 91.3fm and kmsu.org into the image.
One thing to keep in mind is that there always seems to be some kind of surprise that pops up during the printing process, so we may need change elements of the design. That's just the way these things seem to go, so please don't take it personal. In fact, the guidelines may change as soon as these rules are posted, so check back!

OH! The deadline for submissions is September 18th.

Come up with a super cool design for KMSU and submit it to shufflefunction@hotmail.com. If your design isn't digital, you can mail it to
KMSU Radio

Have fun!  For reference, here are some designs that KMSU has put out for previous pledge drives.  Please note that some of these designs were done before color choices were regulated.

UPDATE:  Please don't use Comic Sans.  It's just makes good radio sense.
