IT'S A LEGENDARY STARDUST CARD SHOWER!

If the snow on the ground and having to scrape the windows of your car hasn't tipped you off to what time of year it is, then this blog post surely will. IT IS TIME TO WISH THE LEGENDARY STARDUST COWBOY HAPPY HOLIDAYS! The Ledge is family to us, so we ask that you include him in your season's greetings mail list. He doesn't have any family members close by, so he usually spends his holidays alone. Way back when, in the early days of Shuffle Function, we asked him if he had any plans for the holidays. He told us he'd be doing what he always did - going to a Seven-Eleven to eat a turkey sandwich, drink a slurpee, and then go home. We knew then that we had to do something, and the idea of the card shower was born. This was our chance to let him know he wasn't alone, and that he and his music is loved all over the world.

We'll be giving out his mailing address a bunch on the radio show between now and then, but here it is for your convenience. You can decorate the envelope however you like, but he likes lots of stars and spaceships.  Here is his address:

Norman Carl Odam
Legendary Stardust Cowboy
P.O. Box 730742
San Jose, California
95173

If you're feeling adventurous, include a self addressed stamped envelope. We can't guarantee that you will hear back from The Ledge, but the odds are greatly increased that you will. If you do hear back from him, drop us an email and let us know. He has been very inventive with his replies in the past and we love hearing about it.

We can't thank you enough for making our favorite cowboy happy. He means the world to us, and we love to hear the excitement in his voice when he calls us during the morning show to let us know about all the cards he is getting. For his birthday this year he told us he got so many cards that the ladies at the post office couldn't believe it! This made him so happy, and a world with a happy Legendary Stardust Cowboy is a better world to live in. Thank you Radio Heroes!

THE 2015 TURKEY DAY MARATHON!

Hey, kids.  Hope you were able to over-do it this year for Thanksgiving.  Me, I played a buttload of Beatles Rock Band with the nieces and nephews, and then collapsed in bed with 12 hours of MST3K to look forward to.  The dream would have been to watch the Turkey Day Marathon live, but luckily we can watch it on demand via Yahoo Screen.  Yes, Yahoo Screen sucks, but even a flawed screening of Mystery Science Theater 3000 is better than no MST3K at all.

Here's this year's lineup. I don't know how long they'll be available, so watch them while you can!

HELP RESURRECT MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000!

If you're a sci-fi geek, a bad movie fiend, a comedy nerd, or a combination of all three, you're probably also a fan of Mystery Science Theater 3000.  For eleven glorious seasons MST3K brought the world of terrible cinema into the living rooms of unsuspecting earthlings worldwide and turned the act of watching bad movies into an art form.

Since the show left the air the impact of Mystery Science Theater is still being felt, and in these uneasy times, when we could all use a laugh, it seems like MST3K is needed more than ever.  But what can we do about it?  The show was cancelled years ago, right?

HERE'S WHAT YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT!  You can chip in and help resurrect the Satellite of Love from the television scrap heap!  Joel Hodgson, the creator and original host of Mystery Science Theater, is running a Kickstarter campaign to bring the show back with new hosts and a new roster of movies ripe for the riffing.  How cool is that?

In the first 24 hours of the campaign Joel raised enough money to produce three new episodes of the show.  As the contributions increase they'll be able to increase the number of episodes.  The dream is to have TWELVE NEW EPISODES of Mystery Science Theater 3000 for the world to love.

They've just announced most of the new cast members:

  • Jonah Ray will be the new host on the Satellite of Love
  • Felicia Day will be one of the new Mads (brilliant casting)
  • Hampton Yount will be the voice of Crow T. Robot
  • Baron Vaughn will be the voice of Tom Servo
They still haven't announced the final Mad, but so far the casting has been perfect.  There's only 18 days left to raise the funds for a full 12 episodes, so swing by Kickstarter page and do your part!  THE SATELLITE OF LOVE NEEDS YOU!

In other news...

Thanksgiving means many different things to people, but for the ones that couldn't give a crap about football there's the Mystery Science Theater 3000 Turkey Day Marathon!  The crew of the Satellite of Love started this tradition in 1991, and for years their marathons of terrible movies were the perfect side dish for Thanksgiving meals.

Joel Hodgson brought the Turkey Day tradition back a couple of years ago, and this year's marathon should be extra special since the Kickstarter campaign is underway.  They haven't announced the lineup of classic MST3K episodes they'll be running, but it'd be hilarious even if they just drew the shows out of a hat.  You can't go wrong with MST3K!

The whole shebang will be screening at bringbackmst3k.com starting at 11a.m. CST on Thanksgiving Day.  Don't miss hte hilarity!

WE'RE GIVING AWAY RIFFTRAX TICKETS ON WEDNESDAY!

We're giving away tickets!

Rifftrax Presents
SANTA AND THE
ICE CREAM BUNNY

Thursday, December 3rd @ 7pm
Cinemark Movies 8
River Hills Mall, Mankato

Listen to the show this Wednesday for your chance to win passes to see the Rifftrax fellas mercilessly riff the so-not-a-classic film Santa and the Ice Cream Bunny!  How much damage can they do?  Well, the movie only rates 1.3 stars on IMDB, so it sounds like they'll have plenty to work with.

If you have never attended a Rifftrax event you're in for a treat.  The group is composed of Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett, who were the hosts of Mystery Science Theater 3000 in the second half of its run.  They take terrible movies and make fun of them, and the results are always more hilarious than the film, especially if the movie isn't a comedy to begin with!

Listen between six and nine a.m. for your chance to win!  When you hear the rooster crow, followed by the Legendary Stardust Cowboy saying "wakey wakey! Eggs and Bakey!  It's Shuffle Function!" be the fifth caller at 507-389-5678 or 1-800-456-7810 and you'll get a pair of passes!*

*Passes are non-transferrable and will be delivered via e-mail.  Since you're reading this on a computer, you probably have e-mail, but if you don't have e-mail you won't be able to get the passes. Please don't call if you can't use the passes.

THE BIG BIG MAP OF REQUESTS

Man, we're really wiped out after playing They Might Be Giants for eleven hours yesterday!  Thanks to everybody that requested music yesterday, and thanks to folks across the country (and world) for allowing us to get all fifty states represented in the playlist.  That was pretty cool, and John Flansburgh was pretty excited about that.  Next we need to get folks from EVERY CONTINENT!

Here's the big map filled with pins.  It's tough to see the heads against the map, but if you zoom in they should be visible.

And now back to the show!

If you are from one of the remaining States, please don't hesitate to contact us with your request. HEY USA! We are talking to you TMBG fans!

This Thursday November 19th we celebrate the life of James Ensor (Belgium's famous painter) by playing They Might Be Giants all day long on KMSU. All of the festivities are courtesy of Tom and Chantill, our KMSU Day Sponsors. As we have previously mentioned, we heard from a bunch of They Might Be Giants fans last year when we did this for the first time. But here's the thing, This year Shyboy Tim and I would love to top that.

It is our goal to receive a They Might Be Giants
request from every
single state in the United States.

I think we can totally do this but we need
your help Shuffle Functioneers.

PLEASE HELP US GET THE WORD OUT!!

Listeners can also text their
They Might Be Giants requests to (507) 389 - 5678.

Requests can also be emailed to us at shufflefunction@hotmail.com

Share this post with your music geek besties! Post it on your Facebook page. Join the event page here  or go to this link for more information on the tumblers. Tweet the news across the land. Snap Chat the hell out of it or use a crazy filter on Instagram to let the people know. We want your They Might Be Giants requests at KMSU. There will be a map of the United States hanging in the studio and we will stick a pin with a TMBG big head into every state we receive a request from. Hopefully, by the end of the day we will have a full map! Last but not least, feel free to request as many songs as you like - it is too hard to pick just one favorite by this amazing band!

See you Thursday -

THEY MIGHT BE PLAYING THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS ON NOVEMBER 19th!

THEY MIGHT BE PLAYING
THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS!

Thursday, December 19th
from six a.m. to four p.m. CST

KMSU 89.7fm/KMSK 91.3fm/kmsu.org

This year it'll be twice as nice!  For the second year in a row we're playing They Might Be Giants music for most of the day to commemorate the anniversary of (Belgium's famous painter) James Ensor's death.  Last year we heard from listeners in 25 states and several countries around the world, and this year we're hoping to hear from even more.  Even cooler, They Might Be Giants has contacted folks in their radio network to make this a worldwide event!  They made special compilations for the day, and they even included two tracks that haven't even been released yet.  You can bet your fingertips that we'll be playing them!

Send us your requests now and we'll get what we can into the rotation.  Last time around the playlist was almost entirely requests, and that's pretty cool when you're devoting a huge chunk of the day to one band.  Call or text 507-389-5678 or  call 1-800-456-7810 or drop us an e-mail at shufflefunction@hotmail.com.  We'd love to hear from you!

RIP GUNNAR HANSEN (THE FIRST AND BEST LEATHERFACE)

Sad news today as we find out that Gunnar Hansen, the actor who played Leatherface in the original (and ONLY) Texas Chainsaw Massacre, passed away after battling pancreatic cancer.  He was 68.

Hansen made his film debut in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre in 1974 and instantly became an iconic horror figure.  He went on to become a poet and author not long afterwards.  His role as Leatherface followed him through the years, and he embraced his legacy by taking acting roles in several horror films later in his life.

The list will vary from day to day if you ask me what my favorite films are, but the top three (in no particular order) are consistently The Godfather, Blood Feast, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.  I first saw Chainsaw at a slumber party when I was 14 and it scared the living crap out of me.  It has this reputation as an extremely bloody film, but there's very little blood.  There's TONS of extreme horror, however.  All these current Texas Chainsaw films are such sad interpretations of the original that's it heartbreaking.  I do, however, recommend the recent 3D one.  It's a laugh riot.

Gunnar wrote a great book about his Chainsaw experience called Chain Saw Confidential, and it's a must read for fans of the film.  Here's a fun video of him recording the audio book version of it.

MONDAY IS THE 49th ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEATH OF PAUL MCCARTNEY!

We're mere hours away from exposing the international conspiracy to hide the death of Paul McCartney from the world.  How did it happen?  Why was there a coverup?  Who is the person we know as Paul McCartney today?  All will be revealed Monday morning on Shuffle Function.

There are far more clues than we will have time to share, so we encourage you to do your own research and decide for yourself.  This is a rabbit hole that runs deep, and it gets intense and weird.  Case in point:  The Winged Beatle.  The Winged Beatle is a documentary from 2012 that exposes tons of stunning clues that reveal Paul's death.  This is a highly obsessive documentary, which makes it both entertaining and beyond belief.  Who has this kind of time?  THANK GOODNESS SOMEONE DOES!

NEVER BEFORE SEEN LIVE FOOTAGE OF THE SHAGGS!

FROM THE "THINGS I NEVER THOUGHT I'D SEE" DEPARTMENT:  R. Stevie Moore just posted the only live footage known to exist of The Shaggs!  Before today we only had their LP Philosophy of the World, a few photos, and some first hand accounts to even prove they existed, but now we have the Outsider equivalent of THE HOLY GRAIL.

There isn't any information available at this time about where the footage came from or who shot it, other than the title "The Shaggs Live, Fremont Town Hall 1972".  One could assume from the nature of some of the shots that the camera person was their father or possibly their brother.  There's a boy that pops up quite a bit, and my gut tells me that's the brother.  But what we get to see here FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER is an actual live performance by The Shaggs.  And who knew they had choreography?  Never would have guessed.  You also get to see the town folks dancing to their performance, and apparently they're having a great time.

This footage is an important discovery in the world of Outsider music.  Apparently the original post that R. Stevie Moore made has already been taken down, but someone else just re-upped it.  Watch it while you can, download if it you can, and cherish this unlikely snapshot of The Beatles of Outsider music.
