NOTHING SAYS HAPPY NEW YEAR LIKE AN 129 SONG MEDLEY!

We've been doing the nighttime edition of Shuffle Function for nearly 15 years, and for many of those years we've tried to do something interesting for the last show of the year.  Quite some time ago - at least a decade - we played one of the oddest recording to ever grace KMSU's broadcast signal.  It's a recording that we were first introduced to via Songs In the Key of Z, a great book and CD series published by Irwin Chusid.  It was our gateway to the fascinating world of Outsider Music, and became a major corner stone of Shuffle Function.  The recording we're talking about it by Jack Mudurian, and it's called Downloading the Repertoire.

In 1981 David Greenberger overheard a resident at the Duplex Nursing Home singing at a talent show.  The singer was Jack Mudurian, who boasted that he knew more songs than Frank Sinatra.  Greenberger challenged him to prove it, so he set up a recorder and proceeded to capture a breathless 45 minute medley of 129 songs.  The recording was issued by Arf! Arf! Records in 1996 and it went on to become a cult classic.

We love this recording, but for some people it may be an endurance test.  To get a feel for it, listen to this excerpt from the first Songs In the Key of Z compilation:

Like that?  There's 41 more minutes of it, and we'll be playing all of them TONIGHT on Shuffle Function for our last show of 2015.  Tune in at six p.m. CST for a truly unforgettable recording.

LEMMY: KILLED BY DEATH AT AGE 70

Here I am on my sickbed and I see this unbearably crappy news about Lemmy dying.  Indestructible guys like him aren't supposed to die, but then something like "an extremely aggressive form of cancer" proves otherwise.  Considering the balls-to-the-wall Rock and Roll life that he lived, it's pretty impressive that he hit 70.

The first time I ever saw Motorhead was when I first saw the show The Young Ones.  It was the University Challenge episode, which I can still virtually recite from memory, and they were the interstitial music act.  Holy crap did they make an impression, but of course a song like Ace Of Spades isn't worried about whether or not it makes an impression.  Ace Of Spades could give a crap what you think of it, because it's friggin' Ace Of Spades!

RIP Lemmy.  I'm sure there's gonna be a bunch of noise complaints wherever you end up.

A SHUFFLE FUNCTION FIRST

Sick Shelley

In all the years that we've been doing radio, we have never been sick at the same time, but it looks like their is always a first time for everything. We will be broadcasting archival Shuffle Function shows both Tuesday and Wednesday morning. Unfortunately we have had to postpone our Program Directors For the Day for both days. A big thanks to Jenny, Possum Willy and Regis, Teresa and DJ Lil' Miss for being so understanding! We hope to be back on the radio soon. Send us your good health mojo if you can!

XMAS PROGRAMMING NOTES: IT'S GONNA GET BEATLE-Y!

The Shuffle Function crew is taking Christmas Day off, so we have some special programming lined up for you!

Six a.m. - THE BEATLES CHRISTMAS RECORDS!
We've been playing them for the past week and a half, and now you can hear them in one big clump!  Every Beatles Christmas Record from 1963 to 1969 will be airing during the first hour of the show.  Did we miss any Paul Is Dead death clues?  If you hear any, send them on a postcard to

KMSU RADIO
Attn: Paul Is Dead
AFB 205
Minnesota State University, Mankato
Mankato, MN 56001

Seven to nine a.m. - JOHN LENNON: THE FINAL INTERVIEW
John Lennon's final interview was on December 8th, the day he died.  For the first time in over 30 years the journalists that conducted that interview talk about that day and we'll hear excerpts from the interview.  It's a pretty great radio special, so we hope you guys enjoy it.

Merry Christmas, folks!
Shyboy Tim and Shelley

WHERE'S SANTA AT, YOU GUYS?

Kid, it's Santa!  Chill!  Some of us can't wait for him to arrive!

If you're one of those that can't wait for that jolly ol' fat man to arrive, then you should check out the special site that NORAD has set up for you.  The official NORAD Santa Tracker let's you see exactly where Santa's at during his annual journey.  You also get to see just how many presents he has delivered!  As of eight a.m. on Christmas Eve he has delivered over 923 million gifts to boys and girls around the globe!

As exciting as it is to see where Santa's at, it's important to remember that you need to get right to bed tonight, kids!  He knows when you are sleeping and he knows when you're awake, so don't mess with the omniscient elf.

THAT ONE TIME CAROL BRADY SAVED CHRISTMAS WITH A SONG

The Brady Bunch seem to have incredible luck with Christmas miracles.  Remember that one time that Cindy asked Santa to give Carol her voice back so she could sing at church?  That was a good one.  SPOILER ALERT:  Carol gets her voice back.  Get ready for the waterworks, kids:

Then there was that one time that Carol paid that miracle forward with her voice.  Mike had to run down to the construction site because a shady businessman cut corners and part of the building collapsed.  He's able to free two trapped security guards, but an aftershock causes him to be trapped in the wreckage.  The whole family runs down to the site, and in the end there's only one thing that can save Mike's life...

What a call back! Oh Come All Ye Faithful, y'all!

Hope everybody had a great Holiday season.  Did you send a card to The Legendary Stardust Cowboy?

SEASONS GREETINGS FROM THE LEGENDARY STARDUST COWBOY

The Legendary Stardust Cowboy has been a good friend to Shuffle Function and KMSU for as long as we've been doing the show.  A few years ago he was kind enough to record this special Christmas greeting for you, and he nailed it.  Did it in one take, just like Ol' Blue Eyes!  Hope you guys enjoy it.  It's pretty great.

And don't forget!  You can still send send Season's Greetings to Ledge!  Here's his address:

My Recommended Binge Watch: Making A Murderer

I spent my day off binge watching the new original Netflix series Making A Murderer, and I think you should too! Wait - let me clarify this statement a bit. This is an amazing documentary comprised of over a decade of filming and research and filming by Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos. Through interviews with those involved, news reports and trial footage they tell a story that is disturbing on so many levels. Making A Murderer is a violent story too, and they do not pull their punches in the telling of it. So if the true crime genre isn't for you, I would stay away far way from this. But if you can't get enough of podcasts like This American Life's "Serial", or HBO's series "The Jinx", or Errol Morris's amazing book "A Wilderness Of Errors", then put ten hours aside and watch this now! The first episode is available to watch on YouTube below. After that you will have to stream it on Netflix.

I am not going to go into great detail surrounding the events depicted here, because I want you to experience it with fresh eyes. Just know that once they get their hooks into you, it is hard to stop watching this series. This documentary is shocking in it's detail, and what happens to the Avery family will leave you frustrated, frightened and anxious. We may never know what really happened, but there will be no spoilers here.

I will give you this heads up though, have some tissues near by when you watch. This story is not just about one man - it's the quiet moments spent with the Avery family as the story unfolds that will break your heart, no matter how you feel about the question of guilt. So I will let you go now. You have a long and fascinating binge watching day ahead of you!

THE SECOND RELEASE FROM ROUND BALE RECORDINGS IS HERE!

Maybe you guys missed this, but Dave Perron from Free Form Freakout started a record label called Round Bale Recordings.  The first release came out last Spring, and the second release just hit the streets today.  It's a gorgeous looking lathe cut 7" from Troy Schafer called Untitled No. 4.  Here's what the the Round Bale Recordings website has to say about it:

We are pleased to announce that the second release on our in-house label, Round Bale Recordings, is now available to order. Due to the limited nature of this 7″ mono lathe, we will only be selling this release directly through our website at this time. A digital version, however, is available through our Bandcamp site, and your purchase of Untitled No. 4 will unlock both a stereo mix and the mono mix used for the physical release. Please note the additional bundle option below to purchase three of the four current Untitled releases in print at a reduced cost. Please feel free to get in touch if you have any questions.

The pressing is EXTREMELY limited and it's only available through the Round Bale Recordings website, so don't dilly dally!

YULE LOVE THESE YULE LOGS! (See what I did there?)

Christmas is just over a week away?  How did that happen?  I hope your prep is going well.  Checklist:
I think Shuffle Function can only really help you with the card for the Legendary Stardust Cowboy and the Yule Log, so I'm going to post a bunch of out of the ordinary video Yule Logs to make your season perfect.  THE NEW HOLIDAY TRADITIONS BEGIN HERE!

Nick Offerman played Ron Swanson, TV's greatest living American, and I think part of why he was so amazing in that role is because I think there's an awful lot of Ron in him.  Just read his books if you need proof.  He's a pretty interesting guy.  So it stands to reason that he would give the world a Yule Log that's just as manly as his persona.  Mmmm... whiskey and a fire sounds good right now.

Lil Bub!  YAY FOR LIL BUB!  Such an adorable kitty, and OH THE PURRING!  Did you know that Bub has an album?  Because Lil Bub.

And finally, because there's literally nothing else going on in the world other than Star Wars, I give you the FIVE HOUR Star Wars Yule Log.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS, EVERYBODY!

THE LEGENDARY STARDUST CARD SHOWER RAGES ON! NOW WITH RECIPES!

If the snow on the ground and having to scrape the windows of your car hasn't tipped you off to what time of year it is, then this blog post surely will. IT IS TIME TO WISH THE LEGENDARY STARDUST COWBOY HAPPY HOLIDAYS! The Ledge is family to us, so we ask that you include him in your season's greetings mail list. He doesn't have any family members close by, so he usually spends his holidays alone. Way back when, in the early days of Shuffle Function, we asked him if he had any plans for the holidays. He told us he'd be doing what he always did - going to a Seven-Eleven to eat a turkey sandwich, drink a slurpee, and then go home. We knew then that we had to do something, and the idea of the card shower was born. This was our chance to let him know he wasn't alone, and that he and his music is loved all over the world.

We'll be giving out his mailing address a bunch on the radio show between now and then, but here it is for your convenience. You can decorate the envelope however you like, but he likes lots of stars and spaceships.  Here is his address:

Norman Carl Odam
Legendary Stardust Cowboy
P.O. Box 730742
San Jose, California
95173

If you're feeling adventurous, include a self addressed stamped envelope. We can't guarantee that you will hear back from The Ledge, but the odds are greatly increased that you will. If you do hear back from him, drop us an email and let us know. He has been very inventive with his replies in the past and we love hearing about it.

We can't thank you enough for making our favorite cowboy happy. He means the world to us, and we love to hear the excitement in his voice when he calls us during the morning show to let us know about all the cards he is getting. For his birthday this year he told us he got so many cards that the ladies at the post office couldn't believe it! This made him so happy, and a world with a happy Legendary Stardust Cowboy is a better world to live in. Thank you Radio Heroes!

LEDGE WANTS YOUR RECIPES!

UPDATED:  We spoke to Ledge earlier in the week and he said he'd like all the kiddies out there to send their favorite holiday recipes!  He's never asked for that before, so maybe he wants to assemble a fan club cookbook or something.  In any case, that sounds like a really nice touch for such a great guy.  LEDGE WANTS YOUR RECIPES, GANG!
