It's an all Jazz day on 89.7 The Maverick, courtesy of our day sponsor Nikko.  We've been starting each hour with Sun Ra, as this is also the day he died, but we just got into a discussion about Thelonious Monk.  He's such an interesting figure, musicially and personally.  There was a great book that came out about five or six years ago by Robin Kelley called Thelonious Monk: The Life and Times of an American Original.  It's a great big book, and worth the time spent with it.  Monk lived with a lot of demons, and his struggles fueled certainly fueled his art.

Another great source for the Thelonious Monk story is the 1988 documentary Thelonious Monk: Straight No Chaser.  In addition to all the great interviews with Monk's many fans and contemporaries you'll see in it, there's also LOADS of incredible footage of Monk in action, both on stage and in the studio.  It's riveting stuff, and it's also on YouTube!  The quality is low (of course) but it'll wet your whistle and make you want to chase down a better copy of it.
