Jameson from Variety Pack (Thursdays at 3 on KMSU) has been involved with a really cool release that Light In the Attic is putting out in August. Years ago, Jameson was digging around in a Memphis thrift store, when he came across a cassette by Johnny Frierson. Johnny had a history with Memphis music, having played on some releases put out on the Stax imprint Hi Records. He played with his sister Wendy Rene, who scored some hits for the label. Johnny's career was sidelined in 1970 when he went to Vietnam.
The cassette is a low fi home recording of Frierson playing guitar and singing gospel songs. The performances and very personal and intimate, and the end result of beautiful. The album was probably sold at corner stores and music festivals around Memphis, but the copy that Jameson found appears to be the only one in existence. It's that copy that provides the source material for the Light In the Attic release.
Several of the hosts on KMSU (including Shuffle Function) have been playing tracks from the album, which is coming out on August 19th. It's really great stuff, and you can pre-order it now from the Light In the Attic website. FYI, the vinyl version is apparently a limited run, so don't waste any time!
