IT'S CANADA DAY ON FRIDAY, JULY 1st!

This Friday we're celebrating Canada Day on Shuffle Function!  July 1st, 1867, is the day that three colonies were united into the nation of Canada within the British Empire, so there's good reason to celebrate!  Our neighbors from the north have so much to celebrate, including loads and loads of great music, and that's where our show comes in.

Thursday night at 6:00 PM we'll be playing lots of Canadian Garage music, including quite a few that are sung in French!  We apologize in advance to our friends in Quebec for murdering the French language.  You can shake it off by listening to Gary's Thursday night jazz show, and you'll be a better person for it.

Friday morning we'll have three hours of Canadian musicians (plus some BJ Snowden) during the morning show.  As an added bonus we'll be joined by a real live Canadian!  We're living in a golden age of radio collaboration with our friends from the Great White North!

KMSU PRESENTS THE BLIND SHAKE ON JULY 9th!

KMSU Presents
THE BLIND SHAKE
with Weakwick and Rhythmaplex

Saturday, July 9th
The What's Up Lounge
701 Riverfront Drive, Mankato, MN

$5 cover! Starts at 8:30!

This show is gonna rock.  KMSU presents The Blind Shake, with guests Weakwick and Rhythmaplex, on Saturday, July 9th, at the What's Up Lounge!  The cover is only five bucks, too, so you don't have to sweat much.  Let's rephrase that:  You're gonna be sweating A TON because this show will rock!

The Blind Shake have been touring the world, and they will finally be making their way to Kato!  The City Pages named them the best live band in Minneapolis, too, so it stands to reason that this rule could apply to this town, if only for one night.  SF Weekly describes the band as "at once spacey, primitive futuristic, and brutal: a kind of backyard extraterrestrial minimal surf-punk party.  One Guitar, one baritone guitar, a f**kload of reverb, and a drummer who deserves an Olympic Medal."

SOUND GOOD TO US!

Weakwick is an explosive noice-rock duo from Minneapolis, whose racket provides a fresh-faced update on classic Midwestern scuzz previously heard from labels like Amphetamine Reptile and Touch and Go Records.  Their new album just came out, so the timing is right for their sound to be unleashed on Mankato ears.

Rhythmaplex is making a rare appearance, and they always deliver.  They bring an amazing detuned garage clank to the show, PLUS, they feature KMSU's Edgar Burn from the MN Music Network!

This is going to be a show for the ages.  You know how you hate it when you miss a show and people tell you how great it was?  Don't let that happen again! Join us for an explosive night of music!

SEE THE FIRST CASE LANG VEIRS CONCERT RIGHT NOW!

Case Lang Veirs is one of those "super group" projects that makes you nod your head in agreement, because it makes total sense.  All three women are great songwriters and performers, and their voices sound great together.  Have you heard it yet?  I'M LISTENING TO IT RIGHT NOW!  It's so good, you guys.

CLV... WAIT!  That sounds too Emerson Lake and Palmer-y.  Case Lang Veirs will be playing at the Minnesota Zoo on August 10th, but if you can't wait for that show you can watch them on the interwebs!  NPR filmed their first ever live performance, and they do the entire album, so you no longer have an excuse for not listening.

I can't find an embed code for the video, so click the photo below and enjoy!

THE JULY GRIND-FU CINEMA GIVES YOU AN OFFER YOU CAN'T REFUSE!

The Godfather photo tumblr_ld62j6Dj1D1qcnhhzo1_500.gif

Grind-Fu Cinema presents

THE GODFATHER (1:00 PM)
and
THE GODFATHER PART II (7:00 PM)

Saturday, July 23rd
Wiecking 220 Auditorium
Minnesota State University, Mankato

FREE! FREE! FREE! FREE! FREE! FREE!

Grind-Fu Cinema has got something special for you for July!  It's more than just a double feature.  This time it's a SAGA.  A SPRAWLING SAGA.  And it's completely free.  Check another one off the Grind-Fu Bucket list!

The Godfather (1972)
Directed by Francis Ford Coppola

If you've never seen it, you can't understand why it's so hard to talk about The Godfather without sounding hyperbolic.  It is, quite simply, one of the greatest films ever made.  The American Film Institute ranks it second on their top 100 films of all time list, behind Citizen Kane.  It won the Oscar for Best Picture - Drama, Best Screenplay, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Original Score.  It also won five Golden Globes, setting a record that has yet to be beaten.

This is a kick ass film.

We haven't even gotten to the acting:  Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, Robert Duvall, Diane Keaton, James Caan, John Cazale, Sterling Hayden, and about a thousand character actors that own the screen.  The story is epic, the tone is perfect, the everything is spectacular.  Don't miss this film.

We will be showing The Godfather at 1:00 PM and it will run until about 4:00 PM.  This will give you plenty of time to recover and get back by seven for the next incredible feature.

The Godfather Part II (1974)
Directed by Francis Ford Coppola

People love the first Godfather film, but there are many out there that declare that The Godfather part II is even better.  It's hard to argue with them, because both films are so incredible. It won six Oscars, including Best Director, Best Supporting Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Art Direction, Best Original Score - Drama, and it was the first sequel to win for Best Picture.  Again, not too shabby.

Part II not only takes us to the next stage of the Corleon saga, but it delves into its origins.  The story is sprawling, and the movie clocks in at 3 1/2 hours.  A fast and compelling 3 1/2 hours. Pacino gives what could be his greatest on screen performance, and the cast ads Robert DeNiro as a young Vito Corelone, the founder of the Corleone family.  Yet again, not too shabby.

If you're a movie fan, you don't want to miss this Grind-Fu!  If you've never seen them on the big screen, then you can't afford to miss out.  If you've never seen either of these movies, then you need to right a serious wrong.  These are two of the greatest films ever made, and your life as a movie geek is not complete until you've seen them.  Also, you can see them FOR FREE!  Bring your friends, snacks, dress in layers (because it can get chilly) and get ready for an amazing colossal day of films.  You won't regret it.

I'm the new boy in town!  Where can I go?

HOT SCREAMING HOLY GRAIL! MORE FOOTAGE FROM THE DAY THE CLOWN CRIED HAS SURFACED!

THIS IS INCREDIBLE.

In the world of legendary unreleased media, one of the most legendary - maybe THE most legendary - objects of obsession is Jerry Lewis' film The Day the Clown Cried.  If it wasn't for the existence of scripts and set photos, the movie could almost be an urban legend.  It was supposed to be Jerry's masterpiece, but instead it was buried in his vault for the past 45 years.

What is it about this film that has made it the most desired unobtainable film in history?  Mainly, it's the subject matter.  Distilled to the most simple explanation, it shows Jerry Lewis as a clown in a concentration camp, where he ultimately leads the children to their death in the gas chamber.

Yeah.

Only a handful (if that) of people over the years have seen this film, but the most vocal person to see it is Harry Shearer.  Shearer explained that it's as"if you flew down to Tijuana and suddenly saw a painting on black velvet of Auschwitz.  You'd just think 'My God, wait a minute!  It's not funny, and it's not good, but somebody's trying too hard in the wrong direction to convey this strongly held-feeling." Lewis himself, after decades of angrily refusing to discuss the film, finally admitted during a Q&A that the movie would never see the light of day because it simply wasn't good and he's embarassed by it.

We've gone on about this film for years on Shuffle Function, constantly scouring the web for more and more information, and it was pretty much a dead end until the past few years, when footage from the set slowly started to trickle out on YouTube.  First it was behind the scenes footage, and then an interview from the period with Jerry discussing his hopes for the project.  Each sliver of video was incredible to see, simply because this is something that wasn't meant to be seen.  Maybe the film would never be seen in our lifetime, but these fragments gave us a sense that this is, in fact, a real thing.

Last year it was revealed that the Library of Congress acquired the Jerry Lewis archives, and it was revealed in an almost offhanded comment, that this included a print of The Day the Clown Cried.  The catch is that it couldn't be screened until the year 2024.  Again, it's STILL something that many of us may not see in our lifetime, but we now knew that the film is in the hands of an archive that could potentially do something with it.

Today, the unbelievable has hit the internet.  Thirty minutes of footage has surfaced.  THIRTY MINUTES OF ACTUAL EDITED FOOTAGE. It appears to be drawn from a 2016 German documentary called "Der Clown".  How did we never hear about this?  What adds even more excitement to the documentary is that it features Jerry Lewis' first extensive interview on the project in over 40 years.  But enough about that.  HOW'S THE FOOTAGE?

What you'll see isn't anywhere close to complete, and occasionally title cards will be inserted to give a sense of context.  The footage is presented in chronological order, so you have a basic idea of what is happening. The thing that is most compelling is that footage was shot recently with the same (much older) actors from the film to pad out the missing sections.  It's very intense, and the bed music they add to the scenes is haunting.  While it is shocking to even see this footage, it's all the more shocking because it includes what has been widely reported as the final footage of the film.  You just need to watch it.  It's crazy stuff.

Seeing this footage in this context presents The Day the Clown Cried in a more palatable context, so it probably takes quite a bit of edge off the so-wrong-and-it-gets-more-wrong that the movie reportedly has in full.  Does it diminish the legend of the film?  Absolutely not.  If anything, the added proof that the film is out there makes it larger.  Furthermore, if these bits and pieces are floating around, it makes one wonder how much longer it'll be before even more makes its way out into the world.

Watch this now, because who knows how much longer it'll be available?  At the same time, the Internet always finds a way...

YO LA TENGO AND AESOP ROCK JOIN FORCES TO ROCK FACES!

This is pretty cool!  Aesop Rock made his television debut on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and his backing band was a little group that goes by the name of Yo La Tengo!  We've been known to play YLT on the show (you may have noticed) and we've played Aesop Rock when he's with with Hail Mary Mallon.  Together they're like the Reese's Peanut Butter Cup of music!

MICHAELSHIP HAS ITS PRIVILEGES!

Did you guys hear Jenny on this morning's show?  Fun birthday playlist, huh?  You may remember Jenny from Intergalactic Bacon Day 2016, when she came up and made custom shaved ice for us, courtesy of Gypsy Ice.  She even created three custom flavors for the day, which was pretty awesome of her.

Via Gypsy Ice we have a real live benefit to being a card carrying Michael of the Michael MiMcDonald Society of Silver Fox Impersonators (Takin' it to the streets since 2014)! If you swing by the Gypsy Ice stand at the Farmer's Market outside the St Peter Food Co-op and Deli, you can actually order the three custom Shuffle Function flavors: Lookee Here, My Boy Shyboy, and Legendary Stardust Sunrise!  PLUS, if you show your Michaelship card you can get a medium sized shaved ice for the price of a small!

Gypsy Ice has lots of great flavors, but the Shuffle Function flavors are fancy off the menu treats made if requested.  SUPER ELITE TREATS, YOU GUYS! Never leave home without your Michaelship card!

MacArthur Park is a song that looms large in Shuffle Function's legacy.  More specifically, Richard Harris' version, the first and greatest version, looms large.  When we first started the show 15 years ago Shelley swore up and down that it was the greatest song ever recorded.  This was not an argument that I bought into, but eventually the song wore me down.  It's a great damn song, and we relish the opportunities to sing along with it on the air, high note or no.

It has always been a dream of ours to find actual footage of Harris performing the song live.  In 1968 he did it live on The Tonight Show for the first time (after which the song jumped from #21 to #1 on the charts) and then he toured for the album.  He references the performance and the tour in this entertaining clip from Carson's final week on the Tonight Show.  Jump ahead to 12:00 to hear about the song, but you should really watch the whole clip.  Richard Harris is a master storyteller.

Anyway, we looked and looked, but there was never any footage of the Tonight Show performance popping up.  Finally, a few years ago, a clip surfaced from some kind of countdown show, and it had brief segments of Richard performing the song with a full orchestra on stage.  The bad part:  There are a bunch of talking heads walking all over it, so you only get bits and pieces here and there.  Still, it was actual performance footage, and beggars can't be choosers.

Recently, Dangerous Minds posted a MacArthur Park Megapost, and it was FILLED with incredible performances by a variety of artists. including Jimmy Webb (the writer of the song) and Glen Campbell.  I was excited enough to see the post, because any new performances of the song are welcome, but then I scrolled down the page and saw something that made me yell "HOLY S**T!" in the studio (mics off, thankfully).  Shelley had no idea what the deal was, because I was frozen staring at the screen unable to even describe what I was seeing.  Right there in the post was HOLY CRAP OH MY GOD RICHARD HARRIS PERFORMING MACARTHUR PARK LIVE!

The clip is the one that was mined for the countdown special, except that the talking heads weren't messing with it.  It's full on glory.  Richard Harris is over the top, the orchestra is bringing all the pomp and grandeur, and it's everything that one could dream of.

I refuse to even write more about the performance.  It's only been on YouTube for four weeks, and all I'm doing is keeping you from watching it.  FOR PETE'S SAKE, WATCH IT!

HERE'S A SHORT FILM THAT SHYBOY TIM MADE ABOUT TUNE TOWN!

Hey, Gang!  I've been working on some video content for KMSU, and the first project I worked on was this film about Tune Town and Record Store Day.  Tune Town is a regular haunt, and I'm a sucker for anything RSD, so it seemed like a good subject for me to shoot.  Since I've never made any videos or films (unless you count the Public Access Kung Fu movies I made when I was 15.  I know they're around here somewhere...) I thought it would be a relatively forgiving setting for me to learn just how little I know about making this kind of thing.  It was, but mostly Carl was forgiving, because I had a comical amount of technical issues happen that required me to get in his face with a lens over and over.  THANK YOU, CARL!

Anyway, it's pretty sloppy and the auto focus became sentient and decided to act in its own best interest, and I didn't shoot nearly enough footage, but I finished it.  Now I can work on not screwing up in all the ways that I did during this project.  Hope you enjoy it, and if you don't there's always cat videos to turn to.

THE 2016 SHUFFLE FUNCTION 24 HOUR PLEDGE DRIVE A-GO-GO IN CONVENIENT VIDEO FORM!

The Spring 24 hour marathon was less than two months ago, but in some ways the time span feels like an eternity.  That initial blast of radio mania comes and goes so fast that we barely have time to consider all the things that happened, and before you know it we've moved on to the next thing.  We spend four months planning and prepping for it and it's over in what seems like an instant.  It's so weird.  Time is so weird.

During the marathon we were joined by the gang from True Facade Pictures, and they shot a bunch of footage of all the things that went on throughout it.  The end result is this fun four minute short film that really captures the energy and excitement of the marathon, as well as how amazing it is to be a part of KMSU and to have such incredible listeners.  We think it turned out great, and hopefully you guys like it, too.

As always, thanks for your support.  KMSU is nothing without you.

CHRIS GETHARD, BRETT DAVIS, AND THE ART OF COMMITTING TO THE JOKE

We've been preaching the gospel of The Chris Gethard Show for a while on Shuffle Function.  What started as a primitive gathering of comedian friends on New York Public Access has evolved into a weekly program on Fusion.  Its improv based format is this weird mix of crazed boundary free humor and genuinely heartfelt and supportive connections with the audience.  One gets the impression that the desire to reach just one person, and let them know it's going to be okay, is just as important as having a great time while flipping the bird to anything resembling conventional television.  It's just as important to belong as it is to be an outsider.

The show itself was something of an outsider on the very channel it broadcast from.  MNN seems to be a pretty standard mix of educational programming mixed with eccentric fringy elements, and you would think that a show as crazy as The Chris Gethard Show would fit right in.  One of the problems between TCGS and MNN is that the show had gotten a national following, and with that fame came jealousy.  People on the station began to resent the freewheeling kind of show it was, and they threw around accusations of preferential treatment and unprofessional behavior.

To his credit, Chris Gethard always wanted to maintain an open dialogue with MNN and the elements in the station that had issues with him.  It was a frequent topic on TCGS, and he wanted to to engage the people with issues so he could defend himself and try to clear the air.  It's a healthier way to deal with personal adversaries than many people might handle it, and on the night of October 23rd, 2014 he took it one step further by inviting one of his opponents to discuss it on the show.

If you're unfamiliar with The Chris Gethard Show, you really should watch the entire episode to understand exactly why things happened the way they did.  If you already watch the show, then just skip ahead to the 40:40 point to see the confrontation.  A gentleman that goes by the name of Smith had been watching the show from the back of the studio, and staring Chris down.  Gethard then invited him to the set for an open dialogue to find out why Smith had a problem with the show, and together they talked about the issues that people at MNN had with TCGS.  The conversation was tense, and by the end of it things spun out of control.  Smith felt provoked and ended up throwing water on an audience member, and then the show turned into chaos.

The events of that episode were an example of just how spontaneous things can get on The Chris Gethard show.  Flash forward to a month later when folks tune into TCGS and suddenly find a new show called Truth or Myth with Smith.  As the show unfolds it appears that the anti-Gethard folks at MNN have won the battle and Smith has taken over Chris' timeslot.  What takes place over the next hour is classic public access that slowly begins to deteriorate, and by the end of it we see Gethard fans charging the studio to demand the return of their favorite show.  Nothing, however, could prepare viewers for just how insane and terrifying the conclusion of the show would be.

As unexpected as the end of Truth or Myth was, it was even more unexpected when it revealed that the two shows were part of an elaborate stunt.  Smith is actually a comedian named Brett Davis, and he worked together with Gethard to create a situation that built on the existing reputation that TCGS had within MNN.  "What you saw on last night's show is what happens when one of the most committed comedians I've ever seen plays it as real as possible," said Gethard in a blog post he wrote about the situation, and it was played very convincingly.  Indeed, it appeared that many of the Gethard Show cast were unaware of what was going on.

Davis fully committed to the character and the situation, and it resulted in something that felt very real.  So real, in fact, that many fans of the show felt like they had been deceived and lied to by a show that they had invested in on a personal level.  Gethard explained in his blog post that he never meant to deceive folks, and that part of the intensity of the appearance was because most of the characters they have on their show are very dumb, like Peg Leg Asaurus, a that limps around on with a horn on his head.  That's the ENTIRE character.  TCGS listeners weren't ready or expecting such a committed and realistic performance on the show.

In 2015 The Chris Gethard Show graduated from Public Access and moved to cable network Fusion.  As a Gethard fan, I followed him to his new TV home, and the transition was pretty seamless.  Season One on Fusion was made up of half hour episodes, but Season Two (which just finished) saw the show doing hour long episodes.  The shows is MAYBE a little bigger, and BARELY more professional, but it retains all the heartfelt absurdity of the Public Access show.

It had never occurred to me to look into what might happen to the TCGS time slot once they moved on, because it was never about the Public Access channel for me.  I only knew Gethard through YouTube, so the changing MNN schedule was irrelevant.  When I was doing research for this blog post I looked into it a little bit, and I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered what had replaced TCGS.

The new show is called The Special without Brett Davis, and it stars Brett Davis, aka Smith.

The Special without Brett Davis is a new and wonderful beast, and in many ways it's completely different than The Chris Gethard Show.  At the very least it's as insane as TCGS, but to me it looks like it's WAY more insane.  It's also appears to be entirely character driven, and the overall feel is more ambitious and developed.  For example, the seventh episode (which aired on April Fools Day) is called "The Chris Gethard Show", and it's a very faithful recreation of the original TCGS, right down to having Gethard regular "Mimi on the Hoops" in the background and The Best Show's Tom Scharpling  sitting around staring at his phone (something he has done on a few episodes of TCGS).

The biggest difference, as you will see, is that the real Chris Gethard Show never suddenly turned murderous.  At one point Chris (played with uncanny accuracy by Brett Davis) takes a call from someone called The Great Darkness who claims "the saddest you will ever be is in twenty minutes".  Sure enough, twenty minutes later The Great Darkness, which turns out to be a terrorist cult, shows up and begins murdering people in the studio.  The whole things is played completely straight, and I would have to imagine that people watching the show would think it was actually happening.  It's a pretty terrifying turn for an otherwise goofy program.  Half the time the humor comes from the fact that there's absolutely NOTHING funny happening.

It also makes total sense that The Great Darkness returned a few episodes later.

This is dark and amazing stuff, and it's played with total sincerity.  I've only just begun watching The Special without Brett Davis, and I'm really impressed.  The devotion to the characters and scenarios seems to have an Andy Kaufman-esque quality to it, and it's completely mesmerizing.  Check out this episode where Davis plays Count Dracula.  It's pretty surreal.

I've only just started discovering The Special without Brett Davis, but this is a show that I'm going to be spending quite a bit of time with.  It's the perfect blend of weird and funny and questionably funny.
