IT'S A LEGENDARY STARDUST CARD SHOWER!

If the snow on the ground and having to scrape the windows of your car hasn't tipped you off to what time of year it is, then this blog post surely will. IT IS TIME TO WISH THE LEGENDARY STARDUST COWBOY HAPPY HOLIDAYS! The Ledge is family to us, so we ask that you include him in your season's greetings mail list. He doesn't have any family members close by, so he usually spends his holidays alone. Way back when, in the early days of Shuffle Function, we asked him if he had any plans for the holidays. He told us he'd be doing what he always did - going to a Seven-Eleven to eat a turkey sandwich, drink a slurpee, and then go home. We knew then that we had to do something, and the idea of the card shower was born. This was our chance to let him know he wasn't alone, and that he and his music is loved all over the world.

We'll be giving out his mailing address a bunch on the radio show between now and then, but here it is for your convenience. You can decorate the envelope however you like, but he likes lots of stars and spaceships.  Here is his address:

Norman Carl Odam
Legendary Stardust Cowboy
P.O. Box 730742
San Jose, California
95173

If you're feeling adventurous, include a self addressed stamped envelope. We can't guarantee that you will hear back from The Ledge, but the odds are greatly increased that you will. If you do hear back from him, drop us an email and let us know. He has been very inventive with his replies in the past and we love hearing about it.

We can't thank you enough for making our favorite cowboy happy. He means the world to us, and we love to hear the excitement in his voice when he calls us during the morning show to let us know about all the cards he is getting. For his birthday this year he told us he got so many cards that the ladies at the post office couldn't believe it! This made him so happy, and a world with a happy Legendary Stardust Cowboy is a better world to live in. Thank you Radio Heroes!

LEDGE WANTS YOUR RECIPES!

We spoke to Ledge earlier and he said he'd like all the kiddies out there to send their favorite holiday recipes!  He's never asked for that before, so maybe he wants to assemble a fan club cookbook or something.  In any case, that sounds like a really nice touch for such a great guy.  LEDGE WANTS YOUR RECIPES, GANG!

Commemorate This Year's They Might Be Playing They Might Be Giants Day

The great people at They Might Be Giants Headquarters wanted to commemorate KMSU's fantastic day sponsorship this year, and so they collaborated with our very own Tom Royer to design this one of a kind t-shirt. The last two years we have managed to get requests from all 50 States, with this year being our biggest year yet with 14 International Countries participating as well! It was an outpouring of They Might Be Giants love and KMSU was smack dab in the middle of it. I love it that the band is so willing to help let the world know about how cool KMSU is. Just in case you can't make out the text on the back of the shirt, here is a close-up:

These shirts are only available through the Holidays on the merch page of the They Might Be Giants website. You can follow this link to find it. It is available in men and women's sizes. Wave your freak flag high with this amazing t-shirt and let the world know how amazing KMSU is!

THE LAST WALTZ TURNS 40!

The Last Waltz occurred on Thanksgiving in 1976.  It was an epic concert featuring The Band in what would be their last performance with the original lineup, along with a who's who of music legends joining them on stage.  The day even included ballroom dancing and 5000 Thanksgiving dinners.  I don't know what tickets cost, but it seems like folks got their moneys worth.

A few years ago somebody posted The Last Waltz on YouTube, but not the Martin Scorsese version you're used to.  This is the ENTIRE Last Waltz concert, including songs not available anywhere else.  Even better, it's the original soundboard recordings, so no overdubs here.  It's stunning.  We were listening to some of it at the station the other day, and it knocked us out.  You even get the full Dylan set .  The video is solid, though it is from a single camera at the back of the room.  Bill Graham recorded all the shows that he produced, so this is most likely from the Winterland archives.

These guys really knew how to throw a farewell bash.

Thank You TMBG Fans! Thanks Johns!

Close up of the TMBPTMBG Map
Where do I begin? This last Friday's They Might Be Playing They Might Be Giants was one of the funnest days I've had on the radio. This was the third time we'd been asked to honor James Ensor's death by our Day Sponsors Tom and Chantill. Every year has been bigger than the last, and the listener response has only grown and grown. We knew going into this that we'd be hearing from TMBG fans world wide, but even that knowledge didn't prepare us for the onslaught. Walking into the station at 5:45 we already had text requests waiting for us. Before we even played one request Friday morning we had already heard from TMBG fans in 16 different States. Six a.m. came, Meet James Ensor began and we were off to the races. The requests started flooding in immediately and we were crazy busy trying to keep up with them! The picture below shows just the requests that were coming in on twitter!

The Twitter requests were piling in.
It was exciting to see the song requests roll in like this and it made the ten hours just fly by. The love of this band by their fans was clearly evident, and this year we managed to hit our goal of getting requests from all 50 States with almost two hours to spare. In fact we even heard from Puerto Rico!

New map for a new year.

The official State and International list at the end of the day.
By the end we had more than tripled the number of International Countries that we'd heard from last year - with many more requests coming in from the UK, Germany, Canada and Scandinavia. New Countries included: Zimbabwe, Taiwan, Australia, Mexico, Israel, and Russia. The world is filled with They Might Be Giants fans, and I fond that very comforting.

From Left to Right: Our Day Sponsors Tom and Chantill, Shyboy Tim and Shelley
And as if all of that weren't enough, we were joined by both John Flansburgh and John Linnell during the day. We asked for questions from you and we were able to ask many of them. I apologize if we didn't get to one of yours - we will hold on to them for next year if the opportunity arises again. We want to thank both of the Johns for taking time out of their busy schedules to check in with us, and for helping get the word out among the fans. Every time Flans tweeted for requests we were flooded with them - which was really exciting! As a long time fan of this band it is always a thrill to have an opportunity to speak to them, and I am glad that we got to include your questions in the interviews.

The playlist - by the end we had played 151 songs!
We are still trying to recover from such an exciting day. We want to thank our Day Sponsors Tom and Chantill for such an amazing day and for supporting community radio on KMSU. Thanks to our station manager James "Gully" Gullickson for helping out with the technical difficulties we encountered and for allowing ten hours of They Might Be Giants on the air. Thanks to all of you who requested music, helped me find the songs I couldn't find, sent in questions for the Johns, or just listened in and shared your love of the band with us. I played as many of your requests as I could, and you all made for a great play list. And last but certainly not least thanks to John Flansburgh and John Linnell, not only for making some of my favorite music ever, but for being so gracious with your time and energy. You are the best!

We will see you all next year - I don't know how we begin to top this years They Might Be Playing They Might Be Giants, but we will do our best!

Cheers - Shelley

six a.m. to four p.m

KMSU 89.7 FM/KMSK 91.3 FM/kmsu.org

Have you been trying to figure out the best way to remember the life and art of James Ensor?  Leave it to KMSU to help!  On Friday, November 18th (the day before the anniversary of James Ensor's death), the gang from Shuffle Function will be on the air for TEN STRAIGHT HOURS playing only They Might Be Giants music!  Ten solid of hours that are destined to be stuck in your head all day long.  That's the Shuffle Function guarantee.

We'll be joined by Grandmaster Flash Tom, who is the brains behind this day, and he'll be our Twitter Czar for the event.  We'll also be joined at some point by ACTUAL TMBG MEMBER John Flansburgh via telephone!  He called us a few times last year during the day, and this time we want to be prepared for him.  Do you have any questions that you would like to ask John F?  About life, art, music, etc.?  We would like to ask them!  Send them to shufflefunction@hotmail.com, or leave them on the They Might Be Playing They Might Be Giants Facebook page.

We would also love to have your requests!  Last year the requests started flooding in immediately, and it was almost entirely requests for the full TMBPTMBG day.  Folks from all fifty states and four nations listened in and sent us their stories and favorites, and it turned into a wonderful community of fans nerding out on this wonderful band.  Send them to shufflefunction@hotmail.com, leave them on the FB page, or tweet your requests to @TMBPTMBG with the hashtag #TheyMightBePlayingTMBG.

Friday is gonna be a blast, so tune in, request, and join the TMBPTMBG family!

WILLIAM CAMPBELL POST #8: THE SOLO MATERIAL EVIDENCE

The world knew all about Paul's death and the massive cover up by the time The Beatles split as a band.  They began looking at the photographic evidence and noticing things like how pre-crash Paul parted his hair to one side, while post-crash Paul parted it to the other side.  They noticed how real Paul had attached earlobes, while Faul had detached earlobes.  How this mean anything other than that there had to be two different Paul McCartneys!

At this point there was no need for The Beatles to continue to release evidence, as they had moved on to their solo careers.  Still, the guilt ate at them, and they felt compelled to continue releasing evidence.  The first solo clue appeared on George Harrison's All Things Must Pass album, released in 1970.  George had built up a huge backlog of songs over the years and this resulted in a triple album of all the stuff he couldn't get recorded by The Beatles.  One song was called It's Johnny's Birthday, and it was written for John Lennon's birthday.  It's a herky jerky and joyful song, and one wouldn't think it held any deeper significance beyond well wishes.  In fact, if you play it backwards you hear an astonishing secret message...

A much more blunt message was sung by John in his song How Do You Sleep. While it seems to be a pretty straightforward song of bitterness towards "Paul McCartney", it also includes the damning line "Those freaks was right when they said you was dead...".

The most incredible solo Beatles clue actually comes from "William Campbell" himself.  Paul McCartney released his album Memory Almost Full in 2007, and on it is a song called Gratitude.  The lyrics express gratitude for everything he has been given, and how he would like to show his gratitude.  Could this be William Campbell expressing his gratitude for all that his sacrifices have brought him?  Before you answer, listen to the backwards message in the song.  It couldn't be more obvious.

He literally sings "Who is this now? I was Willie Campbell!"

How's that for the truth?

Thanks for listening to my daylong indulgence marking the 50th anniversary of the death of Paul McCartney.  It was all in good fun.  THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE!

WILLIAM CAMPBELL POST #7: ABBEY ROAD

By 1969 The Beatles were tired of being The Beatles.  They had tried to recapture the magic of their early days by attempting to write and record an album of music that they could take to the stage, but the experience only served to illustrate how broken they were as a unit.  It was decided that they would go back into the studio and record one final masterpiece so they could go out on a high note.  George Martin was convinced to return as producer, and the band created Abbey Road.  This was also The Beatles' last chance to get clues to their fans.

Lyrically there isn't a lot in the way of clues.  One of the clues is sung by John during Come Together.  He sings the words "One and one and one is three", which some interpret as revealing that there are only truly three Beatles.

A more obscure clue is in the song Sun King.  The Sun King in French history was Louis XIV, and in Alexander Dumas' The Vicomte de Bragelonne or Ten Years Later  Louis is replaced by his twin brothers.  Is it possible that the band is referring to Paul's replacement by a look alike?

The most compelling evidence of Paul's death is found all over the cover.  The band is depicted walking across the street, and Paul is walking out of step with the other three.  He is also barefoot, and allegedly some cultures buried their dead without shoes.  He's also carrying a cigarette, which are sometimes referred to in British slang as "coffin nails".

Then there's the procession, which some people feel depicts a funeral procession.  John is dressed in white, symbolizing the clergy, Ringo is dressed in black, symbolizing the undertaker, and George is dressed in work clothes, symbolizing the grave digger.

In the background we can see a Volkswagon parked close by.  The license plate says LMW 28IF.  Some interpret this to mean Paul would have been 28 had he lived, while others would argue that he would actually have been 27.  Some cultures begin counting birth years at 1 from birth, which technically would make 28 the correct age.

The Beatles, knowing this would be their last chance to tell the truth about what happened to their fallen bandmate, also included clues on the back cover of the album.  The first clue deals with the crack running through the band name.  Some feel this indicates that the band was no longer intact after Paul's death.

To the left of the band name there are eight dots.  Some believe these actually make the number three, which creates "3 Beatles" across the back of the cover.

Then to the right of the band name there is a shadow that is in the form of a skull.  Is this meant to depict the skull of fallen Beatle Paul?

By the time Abbey Road hit the streets in September of 1969, The Beatles were essentially over as a functioning band.  It wouldn't be long before the clues would all be discovered, however, so their fans could finally know the truth about Paul McCartney dying and being replaced by William Campbell, a Canadian.  There was no need to release any further clues.

Still, they released more clues in their solo material.
