A LEGENDARY THANK YOU TO OUR KMSU RADIO HEROES!

What a weekend, right?! I am still in recovery mode. I want to thank all of you who made it out to the 70th Birthday Bash for The Legendary Stardust Cowboy. The Altamont Boys wanted us to be sure to pass along all kinds of kudos for the extraordinary party and to thank you all for your enthusiastic love of The Ledge. As the Ledge's drummer Joey put it, "This was the best birthday party he'd had since puberty"! The Spectors, Ledge and The Altamont Boys all told us they had an amazing time, and that was because of you KMSU Radio Heroes. Thank you for letting The Ledge know how much you love his music. Thanks for dancing and screaming at the tops of your lungs. Thanks for taking selfies with The Ledge and getting autographs. Thanks for wearing birthday party hats and singing along to the songs. You are all the best, and The Ledge felt the love. This morning he called and told me that he missed Minnesota so much that he cried all the way home to San Jose.

     Thank you Radio Heroes!

LEDGE TURNS 70 ON TUESDAY! SEND HIM A BIRTHDAY CARD!

Poster designed by Jason Knudson

THE  LEGENDARY  STARDUST  COWBOY TURNS  70  ON  SEPTEMBER  5th!

Every year we throw a card shower for the Legendary Stardust Cowboy's birthday!  We love him and he's been a great friend to Shuffle Function and KMSU for well over a decade.  He's a guy that has wanted to entertain people his entire life, and we want to make sure that he knows we appreciate him! This year it's an even bigger deal because KMSU is throwing The Ledge a big 70th birthday bash, and he's coming to town to perform!  What's that?  You don't know what we're talking about? Well here it is...

KMSU presents

THE LEGENDARY STARDUST COWBOY
with THE ALTAMONT BOYS!

with special guests
THE SPECTORS!

Saturday, September 16th @ 8:00 p.m.
Hooligan's Bar & Grill
1400 Madison Avenue
Mankato, Minnesota

FREE ADMISSION!

This is going to be the biggest and best birthday card shower yet!  Ledge is coming to town, and you can let him know that you can't wait to see him!  PLUS, he's turning 70!  The big seven-oh! Everything about this is monumental.  Take a moment and drop him a line so he has a great birthday. Fan letters mean the world to him, and your birthday wishes will make his day, as well as get him psyched for the big birthday show in September.

Grab a birthday card from your secret stash, get everyone you know on earth to sign it, and mail it off to the address we're about to share with you. Are you artsy fartsy?  Feel free to make a card for the Ledge. He likes horses, space, and the weather. Follow that DIY feeling and personalize your birthday greetings.  He also loves to get cards from children, and his fan club will often post pictures them on their Facebook page.

Please share this post on your Facebook page or pass it along to other music geeks in your life. The more cards that arrive in The Legendary Stardust's Cowboy's mailbox the better. Hearing from his fans always makes him happy.

In case you can't read the address above (on an actual plate that he threw into the crowd when he rocked Mankato in 2010), here it is in big text:

NORMAN CARL ODAM
LEGENDARY STARDUST COWBOY
P.O. BOX 730742
SAN JOSE, CA  95173

Don't forget to put stars all over the envelope! If you are feeling adventurous, feel free to include a self addressed stamped envelope with your card. We can't promise that you will receive anything in return, but it doesn't hurt to try.

Thanks Music Geeks!  Your cards mean a lot, and they're the perfect way to gear up for Ledge's Mankato appearance in September!  Let's make The Ledge's 70th Birthday a day he will remember forever!

TWIN PEAKS TALK ON MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 4th!

TWIN PEAKS TALK
Monday, September 4th, from 6-9 a.m.
KMSU 89.7 fm/KMSK 91.3 fm/kmsu.org

The miraculous return of Twin Peaks in 2017 has been something to behold.  Viewers have experienced virtually every single human emotion during the episodes, and reaction has run from rage to rapturous.  We're on the rapturous side because we've always felt that David Lynch had something grand in mind, and that certainly seems to be the case.  This has been a series filled with WTF moments, but suddenly, in the space of two episodes, everything seems to have had a purpose.  It has been a total thrill to watch.

Sunday is series finale of Twin Peaks: The Return, and we're on the edge of our seats with anticipation.  The cherry pie is most definitely gonna hit the fan as all roads lead to Twin Peaks, Washington, for what appears to be a final showdown between all the good and evil that has been dwelling in the town for the past 25 years.  So many questions left to be answered, and many of them will likely be left unanswered, but damn... that David Lynch is a genius.  We'll buy the ticket and take the ride every time.

On Monday, September 4th, we'll be dedicating the entire three hours of the show to Twin Peaks Talk.  Heck, we've been devoting huge chunks of the show to this season already, so why not get it all out of our system during one big show?  We'll be playing music from Twin Peaks and the David Lynch universe, and trying to fully wrap our brains all the tears, thrills, and torment that this season has generated.  It should be exceptionally confusing and chatty.

Have you been watching the show?  Want to join us and talk it all out?  Stop buy KMSU between 6-9 a.m. during the morning show and help us sort through things on the air.  We'll have decaf coffee (bring your own if you want the real deal), donuts, and cherry pie to go along with the theme.  If you can't make it up to the station, text us at 507-389-5678, or e-mail us at shufflefunction@hotmail.com, with any questions or comments you may have.

See you Monday!

WE PLAY BRAND NEW KELLEY FREAKIN' STOLTZ THURSDAY NIGHT!

We've been fans of Kelley freakin' Stoltz ever since we got a promo copy of his Sub Pop EP 'The Sun Comes Through' in 2005.  Every release since then has been cause for celebration, because as far as we're concerned he has never put out a bad album.  It's all pop gold, and he's one of the few artists we can think of whose name is a virtual guarantee of quality.  We stand by that.

In recent years we've taken to playing every new release he has on the air in its entirety.  We don't even listen to them first, because we want to experience them for the first time together with our listeners.  This is what we did this past Monday when we opened a brand new copy of Kelley freakin' Stoltz's new album 'Que Aura' and played the whole thing on the show.  In case you are wondering, yes, it was amazing.

This Thursday night we're going to play the whole darn thing on the air again.  We're doing this because we want the folks that listen to the Thursday night show at six p.m. to get the opportunity to hear this great album, but also because we just want to listen to it all again!  If you're already a Kelley Stoltz fan you'll want to tune in, and if you aren't already you will be by the end of the show.  It's Kelley freakin' Stoltz!

Here's a video he made for the song 'Same Pattern' off the Que Aura album.  It's so good. Just wait until you hear the rest of the record!

GO TO THE SEPTEMBER GRIND-FU CINEMA, YA HOSER!

Grind-Fu Cinema presents

STRANGE BREW

and

HEAVY METAL

Saturday, September 30th @7:00 p.m.
Wiecking 220 Auditorium
Minnesota State University, Mankato

FREE! FREE! FREE! FREE! FREE! FREE!

The September Grind-Fu Cinema is going to be a blast of Great White North amazingness!  Join us on Saturday, September 30th for a double feature that's up to its neck in SCTV talent.  The first film is the most obvious, as it features characters developed for that show, but the connection on the second film may be a little less obvious.  Let's get into it...

Strange Brew (1983)
Directed by Dave Thomas and Rick Moranis

It's kind of strange that the breakout characters on a TV show filled with amazing comedians would be a couple of every day hosers that love beer and celebrate Canada, but that's exactly what happened.  Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas initially created the characters of Bob and Doug McKenzie to fill show space and mock regulations that demanded a certain percentage of Canadian programming be devoted to Canadian content.  Their mostly improvised Great White North skits both celebrated and lampooned Canadian culture, and over time they became a big hit with viewers.  NBC demanded that more of them be made for the U.S. broadcasts of SCTV, and the popularity spawned a hit comedy album.  It also resulted in the only major motion picture based on SCTV characters.

Strange Brew follows Bob and Doug McKenzie on their quest to get free beer by claiming there was a mouse in their bottle of Elsinor beer.  They end up getting jobs inspecting beer at the brewery, but bumble their way into the middle of a massive conspiracy involving beer and world domination.  Also, it's loosely based on Hamlet.  We could tell you more, but it'd just come off as absurd, and we wouldn't want that to happen.  Co-starring with Moranis and Thomas, who reprise their roles as Bob and Doug, is genuine acting legend Max Von Sydow as the villain.

FUN KATO AREA FACT:  In 1995 Max Von Sydow was an artist in residence at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter.  Despite the fact that students kept asking him about the film, Von Sydow claimed he didn't remember doing it.

Our second film of the evening will be...

Heavy Metal (1981)
Directed by Gerald Potterton

This INSANE Canadian/American animated anthology film is based on the INSANE international magazine Heavy Metal.  The magazine itself is a collection of illustrated stories with graphic violence and sex, which basically means it would make the most amazing animated film ever.  Maybe not ever, but the final film became a box office smash, and it became a cult classic.  And yes, it's chock full of graphic sex and violence.  THIS ONE IS NOT FOR THE KIDS!

Heavy Metal was animated using the Rotoscope process.  This means they shoot film and then draw animation over it.  The end result gives the on screen characters a realistic presence, which can be kind of surreal, especially with a crazy film like Heavy Metal.  The stories are a real trip, too.  "A step beyond Science Fiction", as the poster says.  Futuristic, fantastic, gory, bleak, hilarious... these are all words that successfully describe this film.  Also, the soundtrack is amazing.

THE SCTV CONNECTION:  The voice casting draws heavily from SCTV!  John Candy, Joe Flaherty, Eugene Levy, and Harold Ramis are featured throughout the film.

HEAVY METAL IS NOT FOR KIDS!
YES, IT IS ANIMATED, BUT IT IS
DEFINITELY NOT FOR KIDS!

See both of these amazing movies FOR FREE!  Bring your friends, bring sodas, and dress in layers (because the air conditioning can be aggressive) and settle in for a really fun time.  Questions?  Drop us an e-mail at shufflefunction@hotmail.com

I'm the new boy in town!  Where can I go?

GRIND-FU CINEMA IS THIS SATURDAY!

Grind-Fu Cinema presents

NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD
(RIP George Romero)

and

GET OUT

Saturday, August 26th @ 7:00 p.m.
Wiecking 220 Auditorium
Minnesota State University, Mankato

FREE! FREE! FREE! FREE! FREE! FREE!

The gang around the Grind-Fu Cinema headquarters was saddened to hear about the passing of George Romero a few weeks ago.  His movies rank as some of our favorite horror movies of all time, and his skills as a social commentator were uncanny.  Beyond that, he virtually created the modern zombie movie.  All arguments about whether or not zombies are fast moving or slow moving begin with Night Of The Living Dead, his first and arguably most important film.  For the record, Romero was firmly in the slow moving camp, though he was reportedly planning a movie featuring race car driving zombies.  Maybe we dodged a bullet on that one?

Anyway, when we heard the news about the passing of Romero we knew that we wanted to show Night Of The Living Dead as soon as possible.  We've show NOTLD a few times over the years, and it's always a thrill to watch.  The slow building dread and moments of unspeakable horror never fail to terrify.  While the actual gore in the film may be relatively tame by today's standards, it generated quite a bit of controversy.  Since then it has built a reputation as a cornerstone of modern horror, and the film has been preserved in the Library of Congress National Film Registry.

So great... we have an evening that starts with one of the most important films ever produced.  What on Earth can we possibly follow it with?  How about...

Get Out (2017)
Directed by Jordan Peele

The Horror genre, while popular, is usually very formulaic and predictible, so it's cause for celebration when a truly original and effective Horror film is released.  Get Out is one of those films.  It's funny, smart, unpredictible, and terrifying.  On top of that, it says TONS about the state of race in "post racial America".  This is your chance to see it if you missed it when it came out earlier this year, and if you've seen it you're probably making plans to get your but in a seat for the screening.

Get Out has more notable things going for it besides being a kick-ass horror film.  It was the first film written and directed by Jordan Peele from Key & Peele, for one thing.  It's also the first film to break the $100 million dollar gross mark by an African-American director, the highest grossing film by an African-American director, and it's the highest grossing debut film based on an original screenplay and story in U.S. history.  Not too shabby.  Don't miss this film!

Grind-Fu Cinema is always free, so bring your friends, grab some snacks, DRESS IN LAYERS (because the AC can get power mad sometimes) and get ready for a fantastic night of movies with a fantastic movie crowd!  Drop us an e-mail at shufflefunction@hotmail.com if you have any questions.

I'm the new boy in town!  Where can I go?

Are you tired of hearing total eclipse of the heart? Try this Quintron alternative tomorrow.

The eclipse has been on everybody's mind for weeks and weeks, and tomorrow is the big day. If you are like me, you are sick and tired of hearing Bonnie Tyler's Total Eclipse Of The Heart mentioned hand in hand with this big astronomical event. I can promise you that on tomorrow's Shuffle Function morning show there will be no mention of Ms. Tyler, but if you happen to be on a Royal Caribbean Cruise tomorrow afternoon, you can hear her sing it live. Will you hear some Klaus Nomi on the show tomorrow? Yes!

If you are searching for an alternative soundtrack for tomorrow's big eclipse I suggest you check out musician Quintron's Weather Warlock site. Quintron built a weather controlled drone synthesizer that is housed in their hometown of New Orleans. The music you hear is directly caused by the weather the Warlock is experiencing at the time. They will be broadcasting during the eclipse, and I am interested to hear what the differences may be before, during and after the eclipse.

You can find the Weather Warlock at this website: http://weatherfortheblind.org/  I would recommend tuning in before the eclipse begins so that you can hear what it sounds like when it's "normal" and when the eclipse is happening. The weather for New Orleans tomorrow is a high of 91 and partly cloudy. There is a 20% chance of rain. I will be tuning in for sure!

Shelley

THIS JUST IN: The Weather Warlock will actually be performing live from atop the roof of Third Man Records in Nashville, Tennessee!. Weather for Nashville? 93 degrees and clear - plenty of sunshine! Perfect!

SEND A BIRTHDAY CARD TO THE LEGENDARY STARDUST COWBOY!

GRIND-FU CINEMA IS NEXT WEEKEND!

ON WEDNESDAY WE REMEMBER THE KING

This Wednesday is the 40th anniversary of the death of Elvis Presley.  Forty friggin' years.  Elvis' death was the first big "where were you when you heard" moment of my life.  I was only seven, but I was already a big fan because of my obsession with Dad's 'Jailhouse Rock' 45.  I played that thing relentlessly, and it became part of my music geek foundation.  Dad and I went to the old Goldfines store in Mankato I picked up a copy of Elvis Gold that I still have in my collection.  The memories run deep for me.

Anyway, August 16th was a rough day for millions of people, and it continues to be.  That's why we pay tribute to Elvis every year on this day, and we ask you to send us your requests.  Elvis is one of those artists that has a zillion albums and singles, and folks love the deep cuts as much as the hits, so give us a head's up with your choices.  It might take us a bit to track them down, and we want to do right by you and The King!

Thanks in advance, and thanks for being the best listeners EVER!

THE ONLY SLOW MOVING THING ABOUT THE AUGUST GRIND-FU IS THE ZOMBIES!
