TWO AMAZING UPCOMING FREE SHOWS FROM AMAZING NEBRASKA MUSICIANS!

There must be something the Omaha water, because that city has produced some great great music over the past few years.  Two of the musicians responsible for this great music will be rolling through the area for a couple of amazing FREE shows, and it's all courtesy of your pals at 89.7 The Maverick!

David Nance rolled through town a couple of times last year and gave us killer shows.  His last album grabbed my attention immediately, resulting in a Nance binge on Discogs.  I HAVE NO REGRETS!  He comes from a home recording DIY background, but his new album 'Do The Negative Boogie' was done in a studio and it generating significant buzz.  The songs are great, and they sound like they'll be amazing live.  Speaking of live, his band on this tour is being compared to CRAZY HORSE, so that kicks up the excitement level considerably.  Don't miss this FREE SHOW at The Nakato on Saturday, August 5th!

"Omaha has given us the reigning heir to Henry Miller's dark emotional mirror, Townes Van Zandt's three-chord moan, and Lou Reed's warehouse minimalism: his name is Simon Joyner."
                      — Gillian Welch

"Pound for pound Simon Joyner is my favorite lyricist of all time. He has shades of all the greats (Van Zandt, Cohen, Dylan) but exists in a space all his own ... He truly is an American songwriting treasure. It is my hope that more people will discover his music and share in the unique joy that it brings."          — Conor Oberst

That's some heavy praise from some heavy hitters, right?  Simon Joyner has had a massive influence on the Omaha, Nebraska music scene.  The Saddle Creek/Bright Eyes scene gives him massive props, and Beck included one of his albums in a ten favorite albums list for Rolling Stone.  British DJ John Peel loved Joyner's 1994 album 'The Cowardly Traveler' in it's entirety on one of his shows, in an incident often referred to as the "Peel Incident".  When you're impressing someone like John Peel you know you're doing something right.

Simon Joyner will be passing through town in Friday, August 18th, and there is also no cover for the show.  In an interesting big of music news, his backing band will be almost entirely composed of members that will play with David Nance when he plays on the 5th.

ARE YOU GOING TO THE JULY GRIND-FU CINEMA? IT'D BE A LOT COOLER IF YOU DID!

Grind-Fu Cinema presents

VALLEY GIRL
and
DAZED AND CONFUSED

Saturday, July 29th @ 7:00 p.m.
Wiecking 220 Auditorium
Minnesota State University, Mankato

FREE! FREE! FREE! FREE! FREE! FREE!

Oh my goodness... this July Grind-Fu Cinema is a killer.  You wanna talk iconic movies?  You wanna talk movies that capture a decade?  You wanna talk brilliant soundtracks?  There's SO MUCH TO TALK ABOUT when it comes to the July Grind-Fu!  Let's begin...

Valley Girl (1983)
Directed by Martha Coolidge

Remember when Nicolas Cage was cool?  It's kind of a distant memory, but before he started buying castles and albino snakes and starring in blockbuster cash-cows, Cage was one of those names that you could expect great work from.  That reputation started all the way back in 1983 with Valley Girl, his first starring role.  Also starring the uber cool Deborah Foreman, Valley Girl was made to cash in on the valley girl trend made popular by the song Valley Girl by Frank Zappa.  The slang and fashion left the Valley and swept the nation, and soon every girl in every mall was on board.

Unlike many cash in projects, this one actually had a heart and was pretty damn good.  Valley Girl captures the pop culture spirit of the 80s perfectly, and this extends to the soundtrack.  The songs featured  in the film are exceptionally cool, and this extends to the live performances by legendary California band The Plimsouls.  SO GOOD.  Fun fact:  The scenes with The Plimsouls were filmed in a club that later became Johnny Depp's Viper Room.

But yeah, Nicolas Cage is really good as Randy, the punk that falls in love with Foreman's Valley Girl Julie Richman.  It's yet another take on Romeo and Julie, but there's a reason the story keeps getting recycled, right?  Valley Girl is a great start to this Grind-Fu double feature, which continues with...

Dazed and Confused (1993)
Directed by Richard Linklater

It may have been made twenty years too late, but Dazed and Confused is a seventies film through and through.  Written and directed by film legend Richard Linklater, Dazed and Confused takes place on the last day of school in May 1976.  For some of the students it marks their transition into High School, while others are facing an uncertain adult hood.  The movie captures the reckless energy of youth perfectly, and for many, regardless of their generation, it depicts experiences that are very familiar.

This movie is one of those rare films where virtually every actor and actress in it went on to bigger and greater things in their careers.  There are at least three academy award winners in minor roles, and one of them didn't even receive a credit in the movie!  In addition, the look of the movie is perfect, and the soundtrack is verging on definitive for seventies classic rock fans.

Roger Ebert gave Dazed and Confused four out of five stars, and it has a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.  That sounds about right.

Don't miss these two amazing movies on Saturday, July 29th @ 7:00 p.m.  ADMISSION IS FREE!  Bring your friends, bring snacks and sodas, and dress in layers (because sometimes the temp is unpredictable) and enjoy a great double feature with an amazing Grind-Fu Cinema audience.

I'm the new boy in town!  Where can I go?

THE LEGENDARY STARDUST COWBOY RETURNS FOR A 70th BIRTHDAY BASH ON SEPTEMBER 16th!

Seven years ago KMSU threw a party for its listeners that is still spoken of in awestruck tones.  That night The Legendary Stardust Cowboy with The Altamont Boys and The Fleshtones put on one of greatest shows that Mankato has ever seen, and it was completely FREE because KMSU listeners are the best listeners in the world.  Over the next several years this radio community built up an international reputation as the largest concentration of Legendary Stardust Cowboy fans in the world (verified by his fan club, wikipedia citations, and this Vice article) and it continues to show its love by sending Ledge cards and letters on his birthday and during the Holiday season.  That's pretty cool.

Shyboy Tim escorting The Legendary Stardust Cowboy back to the Red Sky Lounge.

2017 is a pretty major year in Ledge's life.  This September 5th he's turning seventy, and a landmark like that deserves a world class shindig.  That's why this September 16th KMSU is bringing the Legendary Stardust Cowboy with The Altamont Boys back to Mankato for one heck of a birthday bash. Be at Hooligan's Bar & Grill (1400 Madison Avenue #210, Mankato, MN) at eight p.m. for a show that will celebrate 70 years of Norman Carl Odam (Ledge's real name),  50 years of Ledge music, and all of the amazing listeners that KMSU has.  By the way, THIS SHOW IS FREE!

Jay Rosen, Klaus Flouride, THE LEDGE, Joey Meyers

A legendary birthday bash deserves a legendary opening act, and that's exactly what we've lined up for you.  Kicking off the festivities that night will be the amazing Minnesota Mod/Freakbeat/Garage band The Spectors!  The Spectors were only around for about four years in the 90s, but in that brief time span they built a reputation for pummeling audiences (and sometimes LITERALLY themselves) with their insane performances.  They don't play together very often, so this is a real treat for anyone that appreciates killer live music.  DO NOT MISS THIS SHOW!

Once again, this is a COMPLETELY FREE performance!  Show Ledge some birthday love, get your face rocked, and have a live show under your belt that you'll talk about for years to come.  Questions? Send them to shufflefunction@hotmail.com.  See you on September 16th!

NUMERO GROUP TEASES HUSKER DU PROJECT, DEMANDS OUR MONEY

Numero Group has been teasing the world with glimpses of their upcoming Husker Du reissue project over the past year or so, and each glimpse drives me closer to emptying my wallet.  It's not even a question of whether or not it makes good fiscal sense.  It's Numero Group, my favorite reissue label, giving Husker Du, one of the vital bands of my life, the deluxe treatment.  Food can wait.

The big question right now is what will be in the reissue project.  The answer:  NO ONE KNOWS.  Numero is playing it close to the vest, but it's safe to assume from the photos that there will be unreleased live material.  We also know that they are remastering the album that will be in the project.  They have posted photos of SST album master tape boxes, leading us to believe that the albums will be spruced up for the 21st century.  Last month they released a remastered version of Husker Du's debut album Everything Falls Apart on Spotify, and that made the world lose it.

The recorded history of Husker Du has been complicated.  The SST years were always clouded with record label mismanagement, and moving to a major label never simplifies matters.  It appears that Numero Group has sorted through these issues, at least where SST is concerned, because all the band members are on board and the label has let Numero use their materials for the project.

It has always been in my mind that the project would focus solely on the SST years, probably because of what Numero Group has fed us, but also because I just assumed that Warner Brothers would hold onto anything they had for future exploitation. My opinion has shifted today, because Numero Group just released a career spanning Spotify playlist, announcing it with "You're gonna want to follow this playlist".  There's material in it from ever album represented, and it's a great mix.  Is everything here remastered?  My ears aren't perfectionists, but it sounds really good.  The material from records that I thought sounded rough seems improved, though that could just be my excitement over the entire project.

When is the release coming out?  Numero Group isn't saying anything other than it's coming soon.  They also describe the project as MASSIVE.

MASSIVE.

There's a MASSIVE Husker Du project on the way, and when it hits we'll be playing every damn note on the show.  This is so exciting.  A better label couldn't happen to a better band.  Stay tuned.

THE NEXT GRIND-FU CINEMA IS IN JULY! DON'T FORGET!

SONNY KNIGHT CELEBRATION OF LIFE INFORMATION

SONNY KNIGHT: A CELEBRATION OF LIFE
Tuesday, June 27th 2017

Visitation at 1 p.m., Service at 2 p.m.
Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church
511 Groveland Avenue
Minneapolis, MN   55403

Secret Stash has just announced the details of Sonny Knight's Celebration Of Life.  Family, friends, and fans are all invited.  My gut tells me that this will be a well attended memorial.  Minnesota loved Sonny, and music geeks far and wide are grieving hard.  Sonny's story was a powerful one, proving that dreams don't have to die.  Sometimes they're just delayed for a bit.  The fact that his music was so INCREDIBLE just made the story that much more amazing.  He will be missed.

Goodbye Sonny

I want to share with you a couple of stories that immediately come to mind when I think about Sonny Knight.

I am not a dancer. Sure, I may be the inventor of the chop chop dance, but that is essentially a chair dance. At a concert I am big into bouncing my head and tapping my toes in time, but I will never be one to participate in a Flashdance scenario. I think it's safe to say that Shyboy Tim feels the same way as I do, but there was one time when we both not only danced, but we sang too. AND we did it all on a stage in front of a camera crew shooting a commercial! You may have heard us on the radio refer to the "Google commercial shoot" that we were a part of. The commercial sadly never made it out into the real world, but participating in the project was one of the most amazing things I've ever been apart of. Google was shooting a commercial about our "mystery record" search and how we discovered the band Haze. Part of the commercial was filmed up at First Avenue, and Haze reunited for the first time in many decades to perform. One of the songs they did was 'Are You Free?', and when the band heard Tim and I singing along in the audience they invited us up on the stage with them. That is when we found ourselves smack dab between Sonny Knight and Willie Ternoir. We all shared two microphones, and sang backup. Sonny and Willie insisted that if we were to be on the stage with them, then we had to dance as well, which we did, and it was amazing. I will never ever forget that moment, being surrounded by some of the best voices you'll ever hear and being a part of Haze. Somewhere out there in Google land this footage probably still exists, but that happy image will forever be stuck in my memory.

Flash forward several years, and Sonny Knight now has his own band and has released an amazing album on Secret Stash Records. It's the Rockbend Folk Festival in St. Peter and Sonny Knight and The Lakers are on fire. He has all of us in the crowd in the palms of his hand and he is whipping us into a frenzy. It is one of those shows that you will brag about being at our lie and say you were. That's how good Sonny Knight is, or I guess I mean was. At one point during a song he instructs the crowd that we are all going to jump up and down a specific number of times, and we do. We count our jumps out loud and cheer when we finish. He then starts picking out random members in the crowd to pick a number for us to hop to. Most folks say five or eight, but when he points to a friend and asks how many jumps should we do she yells out a ridiculous number like twenty-nine! Sonny looks incredulous, but he leads us all through it and we jump and bounce twenty-nine times to the music. It was crazy fun! After the show Tim and I are talking with Sonny who is grinning but looks exhausted. It is then that we find out that the day before he had badly sprained his ankle performing at the State Fair. He shows us his swollen ankle wrapped up in an ace bandage. We are flabbergasted! He just played for almost two hours, dancing and jumping around like a man half his age, and he did it on a gimpy leg! The show must go on, he told us, it is all about the show.

This morning Secret Stash Records shared with us the sad news that Sonny Knight lost his battle with cancer. My heart was broken. Longtime Shuffle Function listeners know the story behind the "mystery record" and the Twin Cities band Haze (if this isn't ringing any bells, please click on this link) . It was during this time that we first met Sonny Knight. He was incredibly shy and soft spoken in person, but on the stage he was a force of nature. I am so happy that our paths crossed like they did. We didn't get to see Sonny often but when we did he always had a big hug for us and he would thank us for our part in the re-discovery of Haze. When we saw Sonny playing at the record release for Secret Stash Record's Twin Cities Funk & Soul album we had no idea that we were witnessing the birth of what would become Sonny Knight and The Lakers. I don't have the words to describe how happy I was to see someone from Haze stepping out and succeeding, and especially someone as talented and amazing as Sonny. His dream came true in the end, and for the last few years of his life he was the star he'd always dreamed of being. It just shouldn't have ended so soon.

On Monday morning's Shuffle Function show Tim and I will be celebrating his music, spinning his records, and missing him madly. From 6 to 9 a.m we will be playing Haze and Sonny Knight and The Lakers. Tune in to hear this great music, and if you want to share your own stories about Sonny we would love to hear them. There are some great link and articles about Haze further back on our blog, including the City Pages article, You can find those here.  The great T.D. Mischke did an interview with Sonny awhile back that I highly recommend as well. You can find that here under episode 17 Soul Singer Sonny. So hang in there Shuffle Functioneers. Monday morning is going to be tough and sad but I am glad that I've got the KMSU radio community to be there with me. If you want to email us requests or stories please feel free to reach us at shufflefunction@hotmail.com
