Grind-Fu Cinema presents

and

Saturday, July 29th @ 7:00 p.m.

Minnesota State University, Mankato

FREE! FREE! FREE! FREE! FREE! FREE!

UPDATE:  Another organization has booked the Grind-Fu theater for the entire month of June, meaning we've had to cancel our free double feature for that month.  We have rescheduled Grind-Fu Cinema for Saturday, July 29th, so mark your calendars!

Oh my goodness... this July Grind-Fu Cinema is a killer.  You wanna talk iconic movies?  You wanna talk movies that capture a decade?  You wanna talk brilliant soundtracks?  There's SO MUCH TO TALK ABOUT when it comes to the July Grind-Fu!  Let's begin...

Valley Girl (1983)
Directed by Martha Coolidge

Remember when Nicolas Cage was cool?  It's kind of a distant memory, but before he started buying castles and albino snakes and starring in blockbuster cash-cows, Cage was one of those names that you could expect great work from.  That reputation started all the way back in 1983 with Valley Girl, his first starring role.  Also starring the uber cool Deborah Foreman, Valley Girl was made to cash in on the valley girl trend made popular by the song Valley Girl by Frank Zappa.  The slang and fashion left the Valley and swept the nation, and soon every girl in every mall was on board.

Unlike many cash in projects, this one actually had a heart and was pretty damn good.  Valley Girl captures the pop culture spirit of the 80s perfectly, and this extends to the soundtrack.  The songs featured  in the film are exceptionally cool, and this extends to the live performances by legendary California band The Plimsouls.  SO GOOD.  Fun fact:  The scenes with The Plimsouls were filmed in a club that later became Johnny Depp's Viper Room.

But yeah, Nicolas Cage is really good as Randy, the punk that falls in love with Foreman's Valley Girl Julie Richman.  It's yet another take on Romeo and Julie, but there's a reason the story keeps getting recycled, right?  Valley Girl is a great start to this Grind-Fu double feature, which continues with...

Dazed and Confused (1993)
Directed by Richard Linklater

It may have been made twenty years too late, but Dazed and Confused is a seventies film through and through.  Written and directed by film legend Richard Linklater, Dazed and Confused takes place on the last day of school in May 1976.  For some of the students it marks their transition into High School, while others are facing an uncertain adult hood.  The movie captures the reckless energy of youth perfectly, and for many, regardless of their generation, it depicts experiences that are very familiar.

This movie is one of those rare films where virtually every actor and actress in it went on to bigger and greater things in their careers.  There are at least three academy award winners in minor roles, and one of them didn't even receive a credit in the movie!  In addition, the look of the movie is perfect, and the soundtrack is verging on definitive for seventies classic rock fans.

Roger Ebert gave Dazed and Confused four out of five stars, and it has a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.  That sounds about right.

Don't miss these two amazing movies on Saturday, July 29th @ 7:00 p.m.  ADMISSION IS FREE!  Bring your friends, bring snacks and sodas, and dress in layers (because sometimes the temp is unpredictable) and enjoy a great double feature with an amazing Grind-Fu Cinema audience.

I'm the new boy in town!  Where can I go?

VOTE FOR YOUR 2017 SMASH HIT SONG OF THE SUMMER!

The voting begins NOW for your 2017 Smash Hit Song Of The Summer!  We started asking you for song suggestions about a month ago, and what we got was an avalanche of really great music.  The songs were all so great that it made the process of narrowing the selection down to a final four exceptionally difficult.  Now, after much hand wringing, heated discussion, and having to play The Allman Brother's Whipping Post AT LEAST four times, we have arrived at the final selections.

THE 2017 SMASH HIT SONG
OF THE SUMMER CONTENDERS!

SHSOTS CONTENDER1: FITKISTO - MANKATO

SHSOTS CONTENDER 2: NOISE ADDICT - BABY SHOES

SHSOTS CONTENDER 3: ERIC COPELAND - FUN DINK DEATH

SHSOTS CONTENDER 4: DION LUNADON - FIRE

Which one sounds like your Summer soundtrack?  Vote now!  There are several ways you can do this:

1) Send an e-mail to shufflefunction@hotmail.com.
2) Send a text to 507-389-5678 during the morning show.
3) Leave a comment on the Shuffle Function Facebook.
4) Call us during the morning show at 507-389-5678 or 1-800-456-7810.
5) Leave a comment on this blog post.

One vote per listener, one song per listener.  Just like a real live election, you cannot place multiple votes! Another thing the SHSOTS campaign has in common with real elections is that there might not be a single candidate you want to vote for, which is fine.  It's just for fun.  You need to vote if you want your favorite song to win, though, so please do so!  FINALLY, please make sure you take this entirely too seriously.  Any rage about a particular song not being chosen is in no way misplaced.

The polls close at 8:45 a.m. on Friday, June 2nd, so time's a-wastin'!  HAPPY VOTING!

GRIND-FU CINEMA THIS SATURDAY! THESE MOVIES ARE REAL AND THEY'RE SPECTACULAR!

Grind-Fu Cinema presents

NETWORK
and
NIGHTCRAWLER

Saturday, May 27th @ 7:00 p.m.
Wiecking 220 Auditorium
Minnesota State University, Mankato

FREE! FREE! FREE! FREE! FREE!

The May Grind-Fu Cinema is packed with critically acclaimed performances and screenplays that get more and more relevant every day.  One film is 40 years old and its themes will make you mad as hell, if for no other reason that things are still so messed up after four decades.  The second film is in some ways an extension of the cruel world that its Grind-Fu companion foretold.  Both films are chilling, and they're also FREE to see!

Network (1976)
Directed by Sidney Lumet

Every day that we read the news, or hear about some fresh new madness that's going on in the world, it's hard keep from following the lead of Network character Howard Beale.  You just want to throw open your doors and windows and scream to the world "I'M MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GONNA TAKE IT ANYMORE!"  This was the world that Network existed in when it was released, and if anything the world has gotten more cynical.  The themes in this movie have become more prophetic since its release, and it will be interesting to see it in a world where truth is in the mind of the beholder, fact is anything we want it to be, and ratings are king.

Network won academy awards for Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Original Screenplay, and it was nominated in six other categories.  The two Writers Guilds of America declared the screenplay one of the ten greatest in cinema history.  The American Film Institute ranked it 64th in its list of the 100 Greatest American Films, and in 2002 it was added to the Library of Congress' National Film Registry for preservation as a culturally significant film.

Guess they must have been on to something.

Nightcrawler (2014)
Directed by Dan Gilroy

"If it bleeds, it leads" is the mantra of TV news in Nightcrawler, which could be seen as a natural extension of Network's anything-for-ratings mindset.  It stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a freelance video stringer, someone that shoots footage of crimes and events and sells it to TV stations.  Gyllenhaal delivers a disturbing performance in an already a dark film.  Some critics see it as an indictment of the Media and consumer culture, but director Dan Gilroy was pointing the finger directly at the people who encourage this programming by watching it.  However you view it, there's no denying that Nightcrawler was one of the best films of 2014, and it's the perfect second half of this amazing Grind-Fu double bill.

Join us for a great FREE Grind-Fu double bill on Saturday, May 27th @ seven p.m. in Wiecking 220 Auditorium on the campus of Minnesota State University, Mankato.  Bring your friends, bring some snacks, and dress in layers (because the theater temp is a world of extremes) and watch two incredible movies with one of the best audiences to see movies with.

with your host Cap'n Carl
Friday, May 26th, 2017
six a.m. to one p.m.

KMSU 89.7 fm/KMSK 91.3 fm/kmsu.org

Friday, May 26th is a very special day for a couple of reasons.  First, It's Tune Town Hero Carl's birthday!  Second, he's celebrating by playing a yacht load of Yacht Rock that day!  Set sail for a day of smooth music, and send him your requests!  And remember:  "When a friend is drowning in a sea of sadness, you don't just toss him a life vest,  you swim one over to him."

WEDNESDAY THE 24th IS BOB DYLAN'S BIRTHDAY!

BOB DYLAN'S BIRTHDAY
on 89.7 The Maverick

Wednesday, May 24th, 2017

One of the longest running traditions on KMSU is the annual Bob Dylan Birthday Celebration.  Our Day Sponsor Diane has been sponsoring this for as long as we've been on KMSU, and it's something that the DJs and listeners always look forward to.  For Shyboy Tim of Shuffle Function it gives him an excuse to bust out all the Dylan vinyl he's been accumulating for most of his music geek life.  It completely justifies his acquisition of all things Bob, which can be a blessing and a curse.

On Wednesday, May 24th, KMSU will be celebrating Dylan's birthday with a day full of Bob.  Shyboy Tim will be on the air from six a.m. to one playing anything he has laying around, and he'd love to take your requests.  This is a day tailor made for deep cuts and personal faves, and they will be played.  You can e-mail them to shufflefunction@hotmail.com or text them to 507-389-5678 on the 24th.

KMSU and its listeners:  Together we make great radio!

WHAT'S BETTER THAN HEARING KISS' THE ELDER ONCE? ALMOST ANYTHING.

Shuffle Function plays
Kiss' "Music From The Elder"
THREE TIMES IN A ROW

Friday, November 10th, 2017
Six a.m. to nine a.m.
KMSU 89.7 fm/KMSK 91.3fm/kmsu.org

For years I would read about Kiss' album "Music From The Elder" and wonder just how bad it could be. You have to really dig to find anyone being kind to the album.  Even Kiss fans have a strong dislike for it.  A quick search for Kiss The Elder comes up with an article called "35 Years Ago: KISS Hit Rock Bottom With 'Music From The Elder" that talks about the band coming off a failing album and believing that only a concept album could restore their credibility. The idea was to come up with something that could accompany a film on the scale of Pink Floyd's 'The Wall', but as Paul Stanley said,  "It's us overstepping our goals and tripping over our own feet".  The label was confused by it, as were the fans.  "Music From The Elder" debuted at 75 and quickly fell off the carts, finding its home in cutout bins not long after.

For years this was an album that I never actively sought out, but I swore that if I ever came across it I'd pick it up, if for no other reason than to find out if it was as bad as EVERYONE said it would be.  A few years ago I came across a copy at Tune Town and added it to my collection.  The verdict:  It's just as bad as its reputation.  "Music From The Elder" is an album that aspires to be great art, but it swings and misses.  The Kiss music that preceded this record was at the very least fun, but there's nothing fun at all about this.

KISS has put out some great volumes of live and archival video under the name Kissology.  The first one covers the years 1974 to 1977, which could be considered the classic Kiss era.  The second volume covers 1978 to 1991, and this is the one that I picked up.  The main reason was because it had the European theatrical edit of their legendary film "Kiss Meets The Phantom Of The Park".  That movie was aired on US TV to savage reviews, and the band was so horrified with how they came off that they wouldn't allow any of their associates to talk about it for years.  To the band's credit, they included it on this collection, and they also did commentary for it.  It's amazing.

One extra bonus on this collection is the above clip of Kiss live on the the TV show Fridays performing three songs from "Music From The Elder".  The band also does a commentary track for these clips, and they're very honest about it.  They talk about how they thought they were hot stuff and would show all the label people that the new album was a masterpiece.  They left the studio, got in their limos, drove off thinking they were on top of the world.  They soon realized that they were incredibly wrong.

For years we've talked about playing "Music From The Elder" in its entirety on the nighttime show, and the subject came up again this morning.  It was just something that we never got around to, but we realized we should finally do it so we can get it out of the way and never do it again.  Looking for a reason to explain why we'd play the whole thing, we found that the original release date was November 10th, 1981.  Folks, if it came out on November 9th, we'd just be playing it during the one hour Thursday night show, but no... it came out on a day when we're on for three hours in the morning.  That's why we've decided to play it ONCE EVERY HOUR.  We'll be playing "Music From The Elder" THREE TIMES that day.

So this is your BIG head's up.  We're not doing this until November, so you have plenty of time to condition yourself with whatever music and media you need to get through this thing.  You didn't like it when we played the two hour and 45 minute version of Barry Manilow's Mandy?  Maybe this will be more your speed.  In any case, this is real.  This is really happening, and November will be here sooner than you expect.

You have been warned.

Shyboy

Is it that time already?  It seems like only yesterday that you guys elected The Monkees' You Bring The Summer to be your Smash Hit Song of the Summer for 2016!  How about a victory lap for The Monkees?

What song would you like as your 2017 Smash Hit Song of the Summer?  We're taking your submissions RIGHT NOW!  We've already received a bunch of fantastic suggestions from KMSU listeners, which is very exciting, and we're looking forward to hearing from you.  Send us your picks for songs you think should be up for SMSOTS2017 and we'll give them a listen.  By the end of May we'll have the pile narrowed down to the final few, and then you guys can vote for the one you think best fits the title of Smash Hit Song of the Summer.

Remember, this election is very serious and should be taken way more seriously than reason would suggest.  Choose wisely, radio heroes.  The fate of civilization is riding on this.

Send your suggestions to shufflefunction@hotmail.com, or text them to 507-389-5678.  Call us during the morning show at 507-389-5678 or 1-800-456-7810.  Just let us know what you think has a shot.  We hope you guys have as much fun with this as we do!  DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS IS FRIDAY, MAY 26th!

GRIND-FU IS MAD AS HELL, AND IT'S NOT GONNA TAKE IT ANYMORE!

I'm the new boy in town!  Where can I go?
