A They Might Be Giants super fan transcribed the phone interview we had with John Linnell during this years They Might Be Playing They Might Be Giants day. In case you were unable to tune in to hear it, you can now read it! Thanks so much to Rachael Jones for her hard work. Follow this link and enjoy!

btw, Rachael is in a They Might Be Giants Tribute Band called The Puppet Heads. Check out their cover of Dinner Bell.

If the Black Friday sales and endless Christmas decorations haven't tipped you off to what time of year it is, then this blog post surely will. IT IS TIME TO WISH THE LEGENDARY STARDUST COWBOY HAPPY HOLIDAYS! The Ledge is family to us, so we ask that you include him in your season's greetings mail list. He doesn't have any family members close by, so he usually spends his holidays alone. Way back when, in the early days of Shuffle Function, we asked him if he had any plans for the holidays. He told us he'd be doing what he always did - going to a Seven-Eleven to eat a turkey sandwich, drink a slurpee, and then go home. We knew then that we had to do something, and the idea of the card shower was born. This was our chance to let him know he wasn't alone, and that he is loved all over the world.

We'll be giving out his mailing address a bunch on the radio show between now and then, but here it is for your convenience. You can decorate the envelope however you like, but he likes lots of stars and spaceships.  Here is his address:

Norman Carl Odam
Legendary Stardust Cowboy
P.O. Box 730742
San Jose, California

If you're feeling adventurous, include a self addressed stamped envelope. We can't guarantee that you will hear back from The Ledge, but the odds are better if you do. If you do hear back from him, drop us an email and let us know. He has been very inventive with his replies in the past and we love hearing about it.

We can't thank you enough for making our favorite cowboy happy. He means the world to us, and we love to hear the excitement in his voice when he calls us during the morning show to let us know about all the cards he is getting. For his birthday this year he told us he got so many cards that the ladies at the post office couldn't believe it! This made him so happy, and a world with a happy Legendary Stardust Cowboy is a better world to live in. Thank you, Radio Heroes!

Ledge he said he'd like all the kiddies out there to send their favorite holiday recipes!  He's never asked for that before, so maybe he wants to assemble a fan club cookbook or something.  In any case, that sounds like a really nice touch for such a great guy.  LEDGE WANTS YOUR RECIPES, GANG!

There are still copies available of the Legendary Stardust Cowboy Christmas card with his rendition of 'Twas The Night Before Christmas on a gorgeous red flexi.  They're guaranteed to make the folks on your Christmas card list feel loved and super special.  Visit for details and ordering!

As I am sure you have already heard, the day that we honor the life of James Ensor (Belgium's famous painter) by playing 12 hours of music by They Might Be Giants is just a day away! I just want to remind you of the three things that are definitely going to happen on that day.

And last but not least:

Send us your requests or questions for the Johns any of these ways:

One of my favorite radio days of the year is just a little over a week away - They Might Be Playing They Might Be Giants. On November 17th we will be playing music from the band They Might Be Giants from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. - THAT'S TWELVE HOURS OF PERFECT POP MUSIC GEEKS! This promises to be the biggest year yet as we have extended our on-air time and we will once again be hearing from both John Flansburgh and John Linnell. Flans will be calling us at 9 a.m. and Linnell will be calling in around 2 to 2:30 pm. Each year we have asked for listener requests, and I know that last year that made up 99% of the day's playlist (I chose the first and last song). This year we anticipate more of the same - which I love. Hearing from all the TMBG fans worldwide is what I love about this day. Often the requests come with great stories and personal anecdotes making this day even more special for Tim and I. This year we will also be joined the entire twelve hours by Tom and Chantill, our Day Sponsors. They are the reason for our TMBG season, and none of this would have happened without them!

So how does this work? You can reach us a number of ways with your requests. The easiest way is to go to Tom and Chantill's website for the big day. You can find it here at Here you can not only request a song or two, but you can submit questions for the Johns when we interview them. Every year we hope to get requests from all 50 States and from all over the world, so if you request a song please be sure to let us know where you are requesting from. We have a giant map in the studio that we put a pin in to mark the locations of all our listeners, as you can see from photos from last year. You can also call or text us at (507) 389 - 5678. You can request on Twitter at @TMBPTMBG
and last but not least you can email us all of your requests at Last year we heard from over 13 countries worldwide, and we would love to crush that! In fact - we'd love to get all 7 continents, so if you know anyone in Antarctica tell them to request a TMBG song!

I know this is a lot to take in - but if you take one thing away from this blog post let it be that this is the best day of the year to be a They Might Be Giants fan. You can listen to their music for twelve hours, participate in asking them questions, and request your favorite song. It's a special day and I hope you can join us for it all. If you can't find us at 89.7 fm on your radio dial, you can tune in on-line at , just click on the LISTEN LIVE button below the picture stream. You can also find KMSU "The Maverick" on your TUNEIN RADIO app. If you have more questions please don't hesitate to go to the website I mentioned earlier, TMBG.LOVE . You can request a song, submit an interview question for the Johns and soooooo much more.

We will see you soon TMBG fans - I can't wait to hear from you!

This Thursday, November 9th, we'll be remembering the life of Paul McCartney, who died on that day in 1966.  We'll also be celebrating the incredible sacrifice made by William Campbell, a Canadian Paul McCartney lookalike that stepped in and became McCartney as part of an elaborate international cover-up.  Why the cover-up?  Because if the world found out that the "cute" Beatles died there would be an unprecedented wave of sorrow sweeping the globe.  That sorrow would result in the potential suicides of scores of teens.

MI-6 engineered the cover-up and swore The Beatles to secrecy, but they couldn't handle the guilt over deceiving their fans.  The band decided that they would let the world know what really happened on that cold November night, but through secret messages communicated via album covers and songs.  Beatles fans started decoding the messages three years after Paul's death, and the story broke worldwide.  Finally, the world would know that Paul was dead.

Flash forward to 50 years later, and Shuffle Function did a day long expose on KMSU that revealed the facts about Paul's death.  Shyboy Tim did a series of blogposts that detailed all of the clues, allowing you, the listener, to decide for yourself if Paul was really dead.  We're publishing links to them in this post so that you can read them and come to your own conclusions about this incredible rock and roll mystery.

Tune in on Thursday, November 9th, between six and nine a.m. for the most incredible conspiracy in Rock and Roll history!

Shuffle Function plays
Kiss' "Music From The Elder"

Friday, November 10th, 2017
Six a.m. to nine a.m.
KMSU 89.7 fm/KMSK 91.3fm/

For years I would read about Kiss' album "Music From The Elder" and wonder just how bad it could be. You have to really dig to find anyone being kind to the album.  Even Kiss fans have a strong dislike for it.  A quick search for Kiss The Elder comes up with an article called "35 Years Ago: KISS Hit Rock Bottom With 'Music From The Elder" that talks about the band coming off a failing album and believing that only a concept album could restore their credibility. The idea was to come up with something that could accompany a film on the scale of Pink Floyd's 'The Wall', but as Paul Stanley said,  "It's us overstepping our goals and tripping over our own feet".  The label was confused by it, as were the fans.  "Music From The Elder" debuted at 75 and quickly fell off the charts, finding its home in cutout bins not long after.

For years this was an album that I never actively sought out, but I swore that if I ever came across it I'd pick it up, if for no other reason than to find out if it was as bad as EVERYONE said it would be.  A few years ago I came across a copy at Tune Town and added it to my collection.  The verdict:  It's just as bad as its reputation.  "Music From The Elder" is an album that aspires to be great art, but it swings and misses.  The Kiss music that preceded this record was at the very least fun, but there's nothing fun at all about this.

KISS has put out some great volumes of live and archival video under the name Kissology.  The first one covers the years 1974 to 1977, which could be considered the classic Kiss era.  The second volume covers 1978 to 1991, and this is the one that I picked up.  The main reason was because it had the European theatrical edit of their legendary film "Kiss Meets The Phantom Of The Park".  That movie was aired on US TV to savage reviews, and the band was so horrified with how they came off that they wouldn't allow any of their associates to talk about it for years.  To the band's credit, they included it on this collection, and they also did commentary for it.  It's amazing.

One extra bonus on this collection is the above clip of Kiss live on the the TV show Fridays performing three songs from "Music From The Elder".  The band also does a commentary track for these clips, and they're very honest about it.  They talk about how they thought they were hot stuff and would show all the label people that the new album was a masterpiece.  They left the studio, got in their limos, drove off thinking they were on top of the world.  They soon realized that they were incredibly wrong.

For years we've talked about playing "Music From The Elder" in its entirety on the nighttime show, and the subject came up again a few months ago.  It was just something that we never got around to, but we realized we should finally do it so we can get it out of the way and never do it again.  Looking for a reason to explain why we'd play the whole thing, we found that the original release date was November 10th, 1981.  Folks, if it came out on November 9th, we'd just be playing it during the one hour Thursday night show, but no... it came out on a day when we're on for three hours in the morning.  That's why we've decided to play it ONCE EVERY HOUR.  We'll be playing "Music From The Elder" THREE TIMES that day.

So this is your BIG head's up.  We're dong this on Friday, November 10th, so you a week to condition yourself with whatever music and media you need to get through this thing.  You didn't like it when we played the two hour and 45 minute version of Barry Manilow's Mandy?  Maybe this will be more your speed.  In any case, this is real.  This is really happening, and Friday, November 10th will be here sooner than you expect.

You have been warned.

What a tremendous morning!  Our annual Polka 'Til You Puke show took place today, and we shattered the record that we set last year for polka pledging.  We raised $5690 thanks to amazing listeners like you and a generous anonymous matching grant, and this allowed KMSU to end its Fall pledge drive! THANK YOU, RADIO HEROES!  Your generosity means everything to us, and we're so grateful that you support a station that gleefully plays three hours of polka during its pledge drive.  That's pretty amazing.

A huge radio thanks to professional Polka fans Maude and Katie Jo, as well as to Ambrose and Charlie for bringing their concertinas in to play live Polkas for the show.  Also, big thanks to Gully and Karen for coming in and answering phones, and to Weggy's for providing breakfast for much needed Polka fuel.

Thanks again for your generosity, Radio Heroes!  We truly believe that you are the best radio listeners on the planet.

"Timeless in its joyous roar" - Allmusic
"This, readers, is what you take to feel alive" - Independent

This is essential stuff right here.  Don't deny yourself this genius.  Yours when you pledge $100 to KMSU!

$100  Premium Pledge  - Program Director For The Day on Shuffle Function

Have you ever wanted to play radio? Here's your chance! Join Shyboy Tim and Shelley on the Shuffle Function morning radio show and dictate the playlist for the day. You choose the songs from your own collection and you get to hang out with us on the air for two hours as well. You will also receive a KMSU hat, a Finders Keepers 15 CD and a CD copy of your show to play over and over again for your friends who couldn't wake up early.

We enjoy offering this premium so much because it allows us the opportunity to meet our listeners and get a chance to find out what music they are into. It is also the biggest bang for your buck in Shuffle Function land!

Seriously, this is a lot of fun, and we only offer a limited number of these, so don't miss out!  Join us on the show!

$100 Premium Pledge - KMSU Record Expedition

For the fourth year in a row, KMSU will be embarking on an expedition to some of the best record stores in the Twin Cities, and we want you to join us!  An army of KMSU DJ’s and listeners will be hopping on a bus and and scouring some legendary record stores for the stuff that vinyl dreams are made of.  Want lists will be checked off, and collecting itches will be scratched.  To top it all of, we'll be riding in one of the legendary green buses used by the Govenaires Drum & Bugle Corps!  Massive thanks to The Govies for supporting KMSU!

The week after the Record Expedition we’ll all get the opportunity to justify our hardcore record binging by taking over the airwaves of KMSU and playing all the amazing new finds on the radio!  YOU GET TO PLAY RADIO ON YOUR FAVORITE RADIO STATION!  BUT WAIT! THERE’S MORE!  You’ll also get one of the super sweet KMSU hats to make all your friends jealous.

The KMSU Record Expedition is a blast, and we hope you’ll join us!  Pledge $100 to KMSU and hop on the bus to vinyl nirvana. Here are some photos from expeditions past to get you in the mood to pledge!
