IT IS GOOD TO BE BACK!

I came back early to the morning show today to surprise Tom and Chantill and their Lovin' Day, and it feels great to be on the radio again even if it was just for two hours. I am back in town for good now, having completed my intensive physical therapy routine. My knee is coming along nicely. My balance is going to need a lot of work however. It turns out that when you limp for years your body kind of forgets how to walk correctly. working on that and building up my strength is going to keep me busy for awhile.
Thank you all so much for watching out for Shyboy Tim while I was gone. I know it's tough to go solo for so long, and for the second time in a year so appreciate your help. We have said it before and I will say it again, KMSU listeners are the best! I look forward to chatting and taking your requests again in the weeks to come, and helping get ManCamp feed.

Before I sign off and want to extend a hearty thanks to Shyboy Tim for all that he does. I have said this before too, there is no better co-host around. Thanks for your hard work Timothy C.!

THE JUNE GRIND-FU IS A WEEP-A-PALOOZA! P.T. ANDERSON'S MAGNOLIA!

Grind-Fu Cinema presents

Paul Thomas Anderson's
MAGNOLIA

Saturday, June 15th @ 7:00 p.m
Wiecking 220 Auditorium
415 Malin Street, Mankato
Minnesota State University, Mankato

FREE! FREE! FREE! FREE! FREE!

Made possible though funding from the Minnesota State Arts & Cultural Heritage Fund

The Grind-Fu gang is populated by Paul Thomas Anderson fans, but we've only shown one other film by him.  That film was Boogie Nights, paired with the Russ Meyer epic Beyond the Valley of the Dolls.  If you missed it, then you missed out on the most amazingly technicolor spectacle of a Grind-Fu Cinema ever!  We're making up for lost time in June by showing another P.T. Anderson movie, and it's such an epic that it's the only film we're showing.  Also, it's a heartbreaker.  You're gonna need Kleenex and anti-depressants, but damn.... it's so amazing.

Magnolia (1999)
Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson

In 1997 Paul Thomas Anderson released the widely praised Boogie Nights.  The film won tons of awards and was responsible for the resurgence of Burt Reynold's career.  Anticipation was high for his whatever Anderson came up with next, but the last thing anyone expected was a three hour epic about coincidence and hardcore existential pain.  Magnolia was loved by critics, but it barely made back its budget at the box office.  That's not to say that there was anything wrong with the film.  The general public just wasn't ready for such a sad and lengthy movie after the triumph of Boogie Nights.

Magnolia is packed with stellar performances from a cast of P.T. Anderson regulars.  Julianne Moore, John C. Reilly, William H. Macy, Philip Baker Hall, Melora Walters, Ricky Jay, and Philip Seymour Hoffman all returned after appearing in Boogie Nights, and they all give some of the best performances of their career.  Philip Seymour Hoffman, in particular, gives one of his most emotional performances.  He's always been a world class cryer, but it's next level stuff in Magnolia, a film that's wall to wall emotion.  Olympian level stuff.

via GIPHY

New to the Paul Thomas Anderson family in this film are Tom Cruise and Jason Robards.  Robards' performance as a dying TV producer reflecting on his life is particularly poignant, as he was battling lung cancer at the time, and Magnolia turned out to be his final film.  Cruise's performance as Robard's estranged son is unexpected after a career of blockbusters, and it's filled with both bravado and devastating sadness.

Have we mentioned lately that this film is a heartbreaker?  Honestly, Magnolia is absolute genius, but it will make you sad, and not in a cheesy Love Story way.  The emotions in this film are raw, and it's impossible to watch without being moved.  The Grind-Fu team is always reduced to blubbering idiocy every single time they watch it, and this time around they're looking forward to blubbering in a movie theater with amazing movie lovers like you.  JOIN US!

Honestly, don't let the emotions scare you!  Magnolia is an amazing movie, and we would love to see you there.  PLUS, IT'S FREE!  Bring friends, snacks, dress in layers (because the theater climate can be unpredictable), Kleenex, and anti-depressants, and get ready for a really powerful night of film.

I'm the new boy in town! Where can I go!

THE MAY GRIND-FU IS INSANE AND IT'S THIS SATURDAY!

Grind-Fu Cinema presents
exceptionally eccentric performances!

TRAVOLTA/CAGE
FACE/OFF

and

CRISPIN GLOVER/RATS
WILLARD

Saturday, May 25th @ 7:00 p.m.
Wiecking 220 Auditorium
Minnesota State University, Mankato
415 Malin St, Mankato

FREE! FREE! FREE! FREE! FREE! FREE!

Made possible through funding from the Minnesota State Arts & Cultural Heritage Fund.

Shelley's gone getting a new robot knee in May, so Shyboy Tim is programming Grind-Fu with a couple of movies he's always wanted to show.  They weird, questionable, and chock full of eccentric performances.  Shall we get into them?  Lets.

Face/Off (1997)
Directed by John Woo

People either love or hate Face/Off.  Is it good?  Is it bad?  It's all in the eyes of the beholder.  Shyboy Tim LOVES this movie, though, and he's not ashamed to say it.  The story of a cop that uses advanced technology to surgically place a super villain's face on his head so he can stop a terrorist attack is ripped from today's headlines is hard to believe, but then again, so are the performances of John Travolta and Nicolas Cage, who are over the top nutsoid.  This is a prime example of cage going FULL CAGE.  Throw the high powered direction of John Woo, and you have a movie that is stupidly fun and out of its mind.  Good thing you don't have to pay (at all) for the full seat, BECAUSE YOU'LL ONLY NEED THE EDGE!

Willard (2003)
Directed by Glen Morgan

What comes to mind when you hear the name Crispin Glover?  Lunatic?  Eccentric?  Genius?  MADMAN???  He's all of this and more in the 2003 remake of Willard.  Glover plays the socially awkward Willard, a young man tormented by his abusive and ill mother.  He's also tormented at work by a cruel and domineering boss (played by R. Lee Ermey) who took over the company that Willard's father ran.  Willard's only real friends are the rats that he starts caring for in his home.  Over time he trains them and uses them for power and revenge.  Does that sound weird?  You don't know the half of it.

Don't forget that Grind-Fu Cinema is free!  Bring friends, snacks, and extra layers to wear (the air conditioner can be domineering, like Willard's mother) and settle in for a double feature of wildly eccentric movies!  The fun times begin on Saturday, May 25th @ seven p.m. in Wiecking 220 Auditorium on the campus of Minnesota State University, Mankato.  Questions?  Drop us a line at shufflefunction@hotmail.com.

I'm the new boy in town! Where can I go?
