<br />
Merry Christmas, true believers! IT'S TIME TO WISH THE LEGENDARY STARDUST COWBOY HAPPY HOLIDAYS! The Ledge is family to us, and we'd love it if you include him in your season's greetings mail list. He doesn't have any family members close by, so he usually spends his holidays alone. Way back when, in the early days of Shuffle Function, we asked him if he had any plans for the holidays. He told us he'd be doing what he always did - going to a Seven-Eleven to eat a turkey sandwich, drink a coffee, and then go home. We knew then that we had to do something, and the idea of the card shower was born. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3-ObR2G2OLeHwB-sTbJim1EOlBoGiJZRHdwEigQp0uJEZloWGAHQFDWXbUyJlEmyg7XwH2NthsXyKsL5lyO5w6uNTARKiA4WJUJ0eGZJXEYNVueQcsTjnVHZkajLuJLHDViYrsQ/s1600/388903_10150403305428247_691353246_8233085_8397406_n.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3-ObR2G2OLeHwB-sTbJim1EOlBoGiJZRHdwEigQp0uJEZloWGAHQFDWXbUyJlEmyg7XwH2NthsXyKsL5lyO5w6uNTARKiA4WJUJ0eGZJXEYNVueQcsTjnVHZkajLuJLHDViYrsQ/w640-h480/388903_10150403305428247_691353246_8233085_8397406_n.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">This year the card shower will be a little different. Ledge recently stopped using a P.O. box for his mail, because the price of gas was driving him nuts, so we're asking that you send your seasons greetings to this address:</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b><span style="font-size: x-large;">LEGENDARY STARDUST COWBOY</span></b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b><span style="font-size: x-large;">c/o KMSU Radio</span></b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b><span style="font-size: x-large;">AF 205</span></b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b><span style="font-size: x-large;">Minnesota State University, Mankato</span></b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b><span style="font-size: x-large;">Mankato, MN 56001</span></b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">We will collect the cards, letters, etc and deliver them to Ledge as we receive them. With the documentary on the horizon, it's important to maintain the privacy of his home address while we can. It won't be so easy to do when the rest of the world is hip to his magic!</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">
If you're feeling adventurous, include a self addressed stamped envelope. We can't guarantee that you will hear back from Ledge, but the odds are better if you do. If you do hear back from him, drop us an email and let us know. He has been very inventive with his replies in the past and we love hearing about it.<br />
<br />
We can't thank you enough for making our favorite cowboy happy. He means the world to us, and these cards and letters really lift his spirits when times are tough. A world with a happy Legendary Stardust Cowboy is a better world to live in. Thank you, Radio Heroes!<br /><br />

<br />
This Thursday, November 9th, we'll be remembering the life of Paul McCartney, who died on that day in 1966. We'll also be celebrating the incredible sacrifice made by William Campbell, a Canadian Paul McCartney lookalike that stepped in and became McCartney as part of an elaborate international cover-up. Why the cover-up? Because if the world found out that the "cute" Beatles died there would be an unprecedented wave of sorrow sweeping the globe. That sorrow would result in the potential suicides of scores of teens.<br />
<br />
MI-6 engineered the cover-up and swore The Beatles to secrecy, but they couldn't handle the guilt over deceiving their fans. The band decided that they would let the world know what really happened on that cold November night, but through secret messages communicated via album covers and songs. Beatles fans started decoding the messages three years after Paul's death, and the story broke worldwide. Finally, the world would know that Paul was dead.<br />
<br />
Flash forward 50 years later, and Shuffle Function did a day long expose on KMSU that revealed the facts about Paul's death. Shyboy Tim did a series of blogposts that detailed all of the clues, allowing you, the listener, to decide for yourself if Paul was really dead. We're publishing links to them in this post so that you can read them and come to your own conclusions about this incredible rock and roll mystery.<br />
<br />
Tune in on Thursday, November 9th, between six and nine a.m. for the most incredible conspiracy in Rock and Roll history!<br />

The weekend I chose to travel north was the 44th anniversary of the night that Deputy Sheriff Val Johnson encountered a large ball of light on the road to the south of him. He was on patrol at almost 2 am on the night of August 27th, 1979 at the intersection of Marshall County Road #5 and Minnesota State Highway 220. When he looked to the south on Highway 220 he saw what looked to be a 8 to 12 inch long ball of light (which would have been a huge spacecraft). </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizrhAZFJvu83UiECzELYlU_g95d9YKdjBn9NSPSX_y2wArc2au4kby_Hxj4G8uWBzQeH4R0l4F0rVA59Uu6OK349DVV267mVfoSNPYrlTNfBXMSPnkm_wqzA3Df7l5DwX1kytUWAJxslwFSsN7jIEySINYN8JI_FagUTtbhYc-hQv_Di2I5SUq/s1000/368066312_6516821078440789_7248333549960273193_n.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="750" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizrhAZFJvu83UiECzELYlU_g95d9YKdjBn9NSPSX_y2wArc2au4kby_Hxj4G8uWBzQeH4R0l4F0rVA59Uu6OK349DVV267mVfoSNPYrlTNfBXMSPnkm_wqzA3Df7l5DwX1kytUWAJxslwFSsN7jIEySINYN8JI_FagUTtbhYc-hQv_Di2I5SUq/w300-h400/368066312_6516821078440789_7248333549960273193_n.jpg" width="300" /></a></div><br /><p>His initial thought was plane crash, and so he took off on Highway 220 at high speed. He was approximately 1.3 miles down the road when the light went from being down the road to inside the car with him. He heard glass shatter and went unconscious. His patrol car slid 100 feet to a stand still alongside the road, although he doesn't remember applying the brakes. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmwNsepie_9wJQ01KUnwzgAwuwg3poSOjH5540mR0Sqps09feasPkYHmvjZUZl5Qa-OU6WekDFfuaz94oeZnX8RrLkWrZryNUwfUjy-QvzpL4G3lEqs_dJhYZ1FVZchc_71CVCqNVuOB9vd6OFZ2NgCy49zsYCstKdC60X5aHYJS3ZnlRLNZ4w/s373/MNWARufocar_prov06.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="373" data-original-width="280" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmwNsepie_9wJQ01KUnwzgAwuwg3poSOjH5540mR0Sqps09feasPkYHmvjZUZl5Qa-OU6WekDFfuaz94oeZnX8RrLkWrZryNUwfUjy-QvzpL4G3lEqs_dJhYZ1FVZchc_71CVCqNVuOB9vd6OFZ2NgCy49zsYCstKdC60X5aHYJS3ZnlRLNZ4w/s320/MNWARufocar_prov06.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><br /><p>Val Johnson was unconscious for 39 minutes after intercepting the ball of light. When he awoke he immediately radioed in for help. He was in a state of shock and would later find out that he received mild "welders" burns to his eyes and had to be blindfolded overnight. Those type of burns occur when someone is subjected to bright lights at night, which correlates with Johnson's experience. His teeth were also broken at the gum line, and he had a light bruise on his head. He doesn't recall hitting the steering wheel - he described it as "being hit by a 400 pound pillow". There was quite a bit of damage done to the car as well, and I will get into that in a bit. It was also noted after the fact that both Val Johnson's wrist watch and the clock in vehicle had lost 14 minutes of time!</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJ3yi4PKFYj9sd3SjRvFhmpEnnNLi_n63lbAj12690RmbxB61yfLeE4gEwhTUvcQNaHNBDvios13LVuuIflxbcT2OXmB_kvi8bVaevC5K_OuBvTXipyPzic9Kvup2PWdzyQ6CRdzfGXLFlfWGilr5Qw44E6603sV9M9Y0e2qPuMFRoSIdoGZcK/s1000/368076683_722612029739192_4882159980947396980_n.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="750" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJ3yi4PKFYj9sd3SjRvFhmpEnnNLi_n63lbAj12690RmbxB61yfLeE4gEwhTUvcQNaHNBDvios13LVuuIflxbcT2OXmB_kvi8bVaevC5K_OuBvTXipyPzic9Kvup2PWdzyQ6CRdzfGXLFlfWGilr5Qw44E6603sV9M9Y0e2qPuMFRoSIdoGZcK/w300-h400/368076683_722612029739192_4882159980947396980_n.jpg" width="300" /></a></div><div><br /></div>Because this is such a well documented UFO sighting made by a very reliable witness with lots of physical evidence that can't be explained, I wanted to go to the location myself. The fact that I could jump in my car and follow Johnson's route and travel 1.3 miles on the odometer means I could be standing in the exact spot where the Val Johnson incident occurred - which is pretty damn cool! Now Marshall county is really up north - only an hour or so to the Canadian border. When I traveled out to the spot I was relieved that there was little to no traffic. I could easily park and get out of the car and have a look around without attracting any attention, and that is what I did.<div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1Po6Gb_P_w8oNESIv3TONriHlVTHm6GKTVIppAOYYGEGmvVYzON85IM2LmPAzFcwqoc3JjCO1ztnsaWOlYJxD5uAqGbeHuVYJPUVVzv-lbOh90zNkoC2YYppB7kOz_yeeJR1ZbId1PVJ9bhYvB7l6gmkuwV8KW8-bChFNl7zg61W-rw9evxwL/s750/368101557_1058002201879684_4700517197578525508_n.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="209" data-original-width="750" height="178" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1Po6Gb_P_w8oNESIv3TONriHlVTHm6GKTVIppAOYYGEGmvVYzON85IM2LmPAzFcwqoc3JjCO1ztnsaWOlYJxD5uAqGbeHuVYJPUVVzv-lbOh90zNkoC2YYppB7kOz_yeeJR1ZbId1PVJ9bhYvB7l6gmkuwV8KW8-bChFNl7zg61W-rw9evxwL/w640-h178/368101557_1058002201879684_4700517197578525508_n.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>As you can see there is nothing around for miles and miles - just farmland. These photos are approximately where it happened. I don't think I expected there to be any kind of marker or sign to show the exact location, but that would have been fantastic. Marshall County you should look into that!</div><div>These photos show just how clear the horizon is. August 27th, 1979 was a clear night ( so this wasn't some form of ball lightning) and as dark as it would be on this road with no street lights, a ball of light would stick out like a sore thumb.</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2g_Z7rNz0eKZybPUDDS4bI6trxu2MmLfTF7VbCv5BihjIAKH2cLc8JbXcuBssKJM3Nih-KPXdtCqAxSN9hlFyUCBN6kPW4rsRslFICEemJf-7q_m1efG0BRw6WFCCYYxXE7rpkqa075iGOyp0Vn1IjlQTsmUb71RXl_Y9loC__8dEuwUvyPDZ/s1000/370246133_304709539008163_8501899288759723082_n.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="750" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2g_Z7rNz0eKZybPUDDS4bI6trxu2MmLfTF7VbCv5BihjIAKH2cLc8JbXcuBssKJM3Nih-KPXdtCqAxSN9hlFyUCBN6kPW4rsRslFICEemJf-7q_m1efG0BRw6WFCCYYxXE7rpkqa075iGOyp0Vn1IjlQTsmUb71RXl_Y9loC__8dEuwUvyPDZ/s320/370246133_304709539008163_8501899288759723082_n.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><div><br /></div>Fortunately the deputy at Marshall County decided to not fix up the car that Val Johnson was driving, and they stored it away so that experts could have a look at it and try to find an explanation to what had happened. That is why you can still see it to this day at the Marshall County Historical Society in Marshall, Minnesota. It's a wonderful museum and I highly recommend stopping by to visit if you are ever in the area. I set up an appointment to see the car on the weekend (they are open weekdays) and so had plenty of time to take pictures and read about the incident. I will share some of the photos I took and talk about the damage that they depict.<div><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixpZWTDu-o3YzKreAm2SLcV5xVVXrpxhRoqFwPHnPxKFby8n7Z8HpoRNJN4_5fmlv-FClsTh3xunsig_So4yzoXV8AI6D68aEeVSCWyiZPhs0o-zvDW5XYeMLkBNPweDUJ0_GxJz7xzLkClDgd8rQ064LCI2dYFhi1Tghyphenhyphenvkk8Mg5Ymh_C0VKZ/s1000/370311007_828165942387096_1350444789753760109_n.jpg"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="750" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixpZWTDu-o3YzKreAm2SLcV5xVVXrpxhRoqFwPHnPxKFby8n7Z8HpoRNJN4_5fmlv-FClsTh3xunsig_So4yzoXV8AI6D68aEeVSCWyiZPhs0o-zvDW5XYeMLkBNPweDUJ0_GxJz7xzLkClDgd8rQ064LCI2dYFhi1Tghyphenhyphenvkk8Mg5Ymh_C0VKZ/w300-h400/370311007_828165942387096_1350444789753760109_n.jpg" width="300" /></a></div><br /><blockquote style="border: none; margin: 0px 0px 0px 40px; padding: 0px;"><div style="text-align: left;">This is the front view of the vehicle. They brought in experts from Ford to look at the broken window damage. The experts said they had never seen such spider web like damage and concluded that there was a number of impacts on the window, not just one. Their conclusion was that the damage was "from mechanical forces of unknown origin" and that the crack patterns on the front window "seem to be due to inward and outward forces acting almost simultaneously". This wasn't after just a casual examination either, they spent days looking over the vehicle! Experts from Honeywell were brought in to try and explain the bent antennas but they also were perplexed. The only conclusion they came to was that it was impossible for them to have been bent by human force and that they appeared to have been caused by high velocity air bursts. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhg9KeZMBoWUnHYYzoY3Bs8tTI6tLnGKjj6WbakMngTWXYE2NF02ARGxBD0t0GUDxp75mY4GbN6GxFPw6_lCGN_wDuGjazQ9YdA3yMgFp_UtUu6CW57wGFJ6iJCI9qAQ3R3xagvuwSmcpj7LvXnSN0yLRScpqdjaDZMttS7-DGqN9MFvzO_AYHX/s750/371547529_1006651413922713_4725348601195299124_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="563" data-original-width="750" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhg9KeZMBoWUnHYYzoY3Bs8tTI6tLnGKjj6WbakMngTWXYE2NF02ARGxBD0t0GUDxp75mY4GbN6GxFPw6_lCGN_wDuGjazQ9YdA3yMgFp_UtUu6CW57wGFJ6iJCI9qAQ3R3xagvuwSmcpj7LvXnSN0yLRScpqdjaDZMttS7-DGqN9MFvzO_AYHX/w400-h300/371547529_1006651413922713_4725348601195299124_n.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div style="text-align: left;">There has been many theories shared concerning the 14 minute loss of time but no explanations whatsoever. Johnson's watch and the clock in the trooper car were both 14 minutes behind, a fact that wasn't noticed until the next day. All in all there has never been a reasonable explanation as to what happened to Val Johnson on that evening. Some might say that he faked the entire event, but I don't believe that to be true. Initially he did quite a bit of press and tv appearances, but he never once said he believed it to be a UFO, just that it was something he couldn't explain. Eventually he stopped doing interviews and he and his family moved away from the area, claiming they were tired of being the center of attention. If he had faked this for attention, he certainly wasn't milking his 15 minutes of fame.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmGvUmCbyxbvXLL275i1jiZlGnmzTy6hONFpwUERrdgY7AIBE8Ts-oKubMV_6HX4pQq0XKLFUNvl2oywJ7g-ZzM8un_tSfYTdLkH7Dl0aQtPxzfzFHPTFGs53eUPTvX_ysYCOdrS5W6Eog_GXvPIiCVOO41NoeGxMTF182LMtLCglVsZHi3M49/s1000/373457836_668947311996833_4939443317777042729_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="750" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmGvUmCbyxbvXLL275i1jiZlGnmzTy6hONFpwUERrdgY7AIBE8Ts-oKubMV_6HX4pQq0XKLFUNvl2oywJ7g-ZzM8un_tSfYTdLkH7Dl0aQtPxzfzFHPTFGs53eUPTvX_ysYCOdrS5W6Eog_GXvPIiCVOO41NoeGxMTF182LMtLCglVsZHi3M49/w300-h400/373457836_668947311996833_4939443317777042729_n.jpg" width="300" /></a></div><br /> Something clearly happened to Val Johnson in 1979. <br /><div>FROM THE DESK OF SHYBOY TIM: </div><div><div><br /></div><div>We geek out over Halloween on Shuffle Function, but that's probably pretty obvious by now. I mean, we do these daily Halloween blogposts, but we also start playing spooky music immediately on October 1st. There are songs that listeners regularly request, like <b>Werewolf Bar mitzvah</b>, Leslie Hall's <b>Zombie Killer</b>, and Jacob The Bard's <b>I Will Survive The Zombie Apocalypse</b> that are in permanent rotation throughout the month. We even play Judson Fountain radio "drammers" every day as a countdown to Halloween, then on Halloween we play Lux Interior's Purple Knif show, because The Cramps are essentially the house band of Halloween.<br />
<br />
We have many traditions.<br />
<br />This morning we played one of our creepiest traditionS. It's a very intense and terrifying recording of a prank that was pulled live on the air in 1952 by the Armed Forces Radio Network. What really freaks people out about this prank is the genuine terror it presents, and that's what people heard during the broadcast of this prank. You hear the very real panic in the voice of an unsuspecting reporter inserted into a terrifying situation.</div><div><br /><div class="tenor-gif-embed" data-aspect-ratio="1.46789" data-postid="18799197" data-share-method="host" data-width="100%"><a href="https://tenor.com/view/stormy-night-frankenstein-rainy-night-strong-rain-castle-in-the-hills-gif-18799197">Stormy Night Frankenstein GIF</a>from <a href="https://tenor.com/search/stormy+night-gifs">Stormy Night GIFs</a></div> <script async="" src="https://tenor.com/embed.js" type="text/javascript"></script></div><div><br />On Halloween Night in 1952, Armed Forces radio decided to broadcast live from the actual Frankenstein Castle that is credited with inspiring Mary Shelley to write the classic novel Frankenstein. AFN sent reporter Carl Nelson into the decaying castle to do a special Halloween broadcast. Nelson was the new guy, so the crew decided to play a prank on him. There was no light in the castle, other than the moonlight streaming in when the clouds broke, and Nelson's flashlight. The environment was basically designed to let the imagination run wild.<br />
<br />
Nelson entered a room in the castle and begins describing what he sees, when there's suddenly a very loud bang. He is started, and you can hear in his voice just how unnerved he is by the scare. As he continues talking his panic doesn't waver, and Nelson starts explaining how crazy it is for him to be so upset because he doesn't believe in monsters or the supernatural. It becomes clear, however, that he's doing more than just talking to the audience. Nelson is actually trying to psych himself up so he'll believe that there's nothing unusual going on.<br />
<br />
Nelson then gasps. After a pause he registers disbelief, because he believes he just saw a statue of Frankenstein's Monster move. Then he sees it move again. It's at this point that his fear is out of control, and he realizes he needs to leave immediately. He runs to the door but soon finds it locked. We hear his desperate pleadings for help in the distance, as he dropped his microphone while making a hasty retreat.<br />
<br />
The entire recording is riveting. Honestly, he's so terrified that one has to believe that it was lucky he didn't suffer a heart attack. It's because of the intensity of the recording that we get requests for it every year, but it only gets one airing during the Halloween season. Luckily, YouTube has your back. <br />

I admit that I was pretty anxious about the movie lineups after last years disappointing experience. I know that most likely I'm not going to enjoy all four films, but last year I didn't really care for any of the movies (one of the movies last year was just a collection of trailers which got old really fast). So I will share with you now what the lineup was.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTXzE_dP8Cp4wpJwHxM9RYKJ4AUSyTyzLB78dnN51_S8uqpQkZhdrjB0yYmC68RITQ5DDzU3aVcRTWNPOPEtDv6fq37PlChbx93wCPZ628CCVX0zw_K0gX_q3uVJwBbPY0zbGWnDxBvldWWEHnMKSIXDbPrU1WAWj0kwifH-Sjm5kIS_Bfctms/s1280/messiah%20of%20evil.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="1280" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTXzE_dP8Cp4wpJwHxM9RYKJ4AUSyTyzLB78dnN51_S8uqpQkZhdrjB0yYmC68RITQ5DDzU3aVcRTWNPOPEtDv6fq37PlChbx93wCPZ628CCVX0zw_K0gX_q3uVJwBbPY0zbGWnDxBvldWWEHnMKSIXDbPrU1WAWj0kwifH-Sjm5kIS_Bfctms/s320/messiah%20of%20evil.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><p>The first movie was Messiah Of Evil from 1974. This film featured unsettling artwork and annoying rich brats who were unable to out run attackers that moved no faster than a casual stroll. It isn't a great film, but it was fun to watch and a solid start to the day. It had a brief cameo by Elisha Cook Jr. from House On Haunted Hill, so that was fun to see. During this movie I had Parmesan Truffle Oil popcorn and a gin and tonic for those of you keeping track at home.</p>
<div style="text-align: center;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/NlRxZdpqodQ?si=yGKXxqkfgx0UfIql" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"> Between the first and second film the host came out and told us that the next three films had "major stars and were "bigger" films. This claim only lasted for the second film, for reasons I will be getting too next. The second film starred George C Scott!</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwr8P3hJoWvE-jL2YB7kwee_d6tGPGvrvE6zeN9fmYvhl_FWVc2YKaomW4KjkybUBQErBbValb1mhFN6aiVGU98tjB88BUmr8kc5k4d2gXlTaUG2aB5fEGwRP6fqDz7-1M7GTCznEbLztrSqf9tDPG-lKBEnnOqPJtXcrWwUd0fjC0jVxibP8C/s1300/changeling.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="668" data-original-width="1300" height="205" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwr8P3hJoWvE-jL2YB7kwee_d6tGPGvrvE6zeN9fmYvhl_FWVc2YKaomW4KjkybUBQErBbValb1mhFN6aiVGU98tjB88BUmr8kc5k4d2gXlTaUG2aB5fEGwRP6fqDz7-1M7GTCznEbLztrSqf9tDPG-lKBEnnOqPJtXcrWwUd0fjC0jVxibP8C/w400-h205/changeling.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div style="text-align: left;">I thought that I'd previously seen The Changeling, but I was wrong. This was a great haunted house movie that I really loved. There are some great scenes with some spiritualists that use automatic writing, and some creepy voices caught on reel to reel. I can't get enough of that stuff. After The Changeling was done, I said that already this year's Dismember The Alamo had managed to crush last years. But we weren't ready for what happened next. I only had a second gin and tonic during the second film.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/UwUI7d5TgGA?si=KYsw9LfGskE8Ocjb" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">At intermission the host came out and told us what the last two movies were, Italian film Blood And Lace and then to end the night - Ringu (the American version is better known as The Ring). I was excited to see Ringu, and so we settled in to see the third film. It started and then stopped after 5 seconds leaving a black screen. There was a communal groan across the theater and the house lights came up. Ten minutes later we were told there was technical difficulties but they'd be starting soon. After another wait the film started again and cut out at the same place. Things weren't looking good. More time went by.......and more time. After half an hour of waiting they announced they were showing something else while they tried to fix things, and they showed us 1988's Night Of The Demons.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9rzJRTwJo92EgK0V1WrDz7mxXMozBGQaaZBWF1Hlvyxh9pZLyJE6vI-WOZb0AocL6bJe3EYiIPe5keGXTP9uLBBddLtMyARuxj1s9hOzM1hmkjhekVQmqmZHN4KMxkeEq2jcaFSvKnrT6A0tOyiN-WneNxTScEObZKigyCGQ5EcXCl3IAO_rR/s1532/night%20of%20the%20demons.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1532" data-original-width="1000" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9rzJRTwJo92EgK0V1WrDz7mxXMozBGQaaZBWF1Hlvyxh9pZLyJE6vI-WOZb0AocL6bJe3EYiIPe5keGXTP9uLBBddLtMyARuxj1s9hOzM1hmkjhekVQmqmZHN4KMxkeEq2jcaFSvKnrT6A0tOyiN-WneNxTScEObZKigyCGQ5EcXCl3IAO_rR/w261-h400/night%20of%20the%20demons.jpg" width="261" /></a></div><div><br /></div>This wasn't a great film. Full of things that was pretty cringe worthy probably in 1988 and so all the worse in 2023. I have heard that each Alamo Drafthouse curated their own lineups for Dismember The Alamo, but that changed last year. The first year we attended this event was filled with 1980's slasher films, which gets really old really quick for me. Teenagers going to party and getting killed by supernatural events is always the storyline, and Night Of The Demons is just that. I was pretty bummed at this point but I was holding out for Ringu. It didn't help things either that I ordered the Churro popcorn and it was stale and had no churros in it.<div><div><br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/tQ7gSRfUCH0?si=5ei-8XFnNl3a5q3B" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe></div></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">Intermission between the third and fourth film was much shorter, since we'd sat in an empty theater for alomst 40 minutes. We expected the host to come out and say something, in fact they even turned on the spotlight, but she must have been tired of sharing bad news. I ordered a pizza with brussel sprouts, bacon and goat cheese that was fantastic, and we settled in to not watch Ringu but The Burning.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOKGKKYQsH9gk69cgL8xc9ak3ftbczYdcFFb3fPSPIxsCNI5gpnyVIrT7d38QiT5wO4MxC5Qec4IRVfIOPnvNSo_DFOVvn1ORCxkI14Cc-2vuWOdzrQCO44GloyNGNLx0_x6bEltRIPDHps004ogb5CIn33S9LfMN5-94rC9H3Xciilin6PDEu/s1000/the%20burning.jpg"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="646" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOKGKKYQsH9gk69cgL8xc9ak3ftbczYdcFFb3fPSPIxsCNI5gpnyVIrT7d38QiT5wO4MxC5Qec4IRVfIOPnvNSo_DFOVvn1ORCxkI14Cc-2vuWOdzrQCO44GloyNGNLx0_x6bEltRIPDHps004ogb5CIn33S9LfMN5-94rC9H3Xciilin6PDEu/w259-h400/the%20burning.jpg" width="259" /></a></div><div><br /></div>This film is better known for who was in it rather than how good it is. There is a non bald Jason Alexander and a really young Holly Hunter and Fisher Stevens. Prog God Rick Wakeman was responsible for the soundtrack and most disgusting of all was that Harvey Weinstein had his hands all over this movie. This was yet one more 80's slasher film that was full of cringe and a dissapointing way to end the night. When the lights came up there was no applause, when there had been some applause after all of the other films. The Alamo Drafthouse knew that things had not been ideal and gave all of us a "Raincheck" voucher for a free movie. <div><br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/KTvr0SJQ_WM?si=6k6rr4OGB3Oq42zT" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">All in all I feel that if there had not been any technical difficulties this would have been an amazing Dismember The Alamo. I have had my fill of 80's teen party/slasher films and unfortunately that seems to be the Woodbury's Alamo Drafthouse fallback position. I will go again for sure - and pray for no technical issues. But I shouldn't complain too much. I still got to spend a day in a movie theater with my friends. So that is the win!</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">Shelley</div>SHUFFLE FUNCTIONhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03635504692226461593noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8120709.post-38963682489567202802023-10-28T08:48:00.001-05:002023-10-28T08:48:54.475-05:00COUNTDOWN TO HALLOWEEN #28: DISMEMBER THE ALAMO!<p style="text-align: center;"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEg7gZu8JEKf42pUj5vik9ZkiBnFWcygx4rzH1WiAW2jTAbL3wz-cE4NuHPmDQnwNgZ679homg0hTwBxZBorTqVOkYTmrdJa7NX1sBnswBufWSdsGDZHKget1hLE3WTdnrBLUVaR0SqPqzeykv5qYEoxi-SFzjgToD3Fs57-8d4Co9jrwSXUO4JJ" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="800" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEg7gZu8JEKf42pUj5vik9ZkiBnFWcygx4rzH1WiAW2jTAbL3wz-cE4NuHPmDQnwNgZ679homg0hTwBxZBorTqVOkYTmrdJa7NX1sBnswBufWSdsGDZHKget1hLE3WTdnrBLUVaR0SqPqzeykv5qYEoxi-SFzjgToD3Fs57-8d4Co9jrwSXUO4JJ" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">FROM THE DESK OF SHYBOY TIM: </div></div><p></p><p style="text-align: left;">First thing's first, Radio Heroes! We want to thank you from the bottom and top and all the assorted ventricals and arteries and such for being so generous to KMSU during the Fall Pledge Drive! We had a goal of $30,000 to keep the lights on and by the end of things we were past $42,000! This was a record breaking Fall drive in a 60th anniversary of major events, so thank you for helping us get to this point. These additional funds will allow us to invest in a backup transmitter so KMSU can stay on the air in event of repair work or emergencies. Please be patient while we tally and order the swag. It always takes a little bit before we can get things together and shipped out, but we promise it will be worth it.</p><p style="text-align: left;">This blogpost is all about what the Shuffle Function crew is doing today to celebrate surviving the drive. We're driving all the way from Mankato to see <b><a href="https://drafthouse.com/twin-cities/show/agfa-presents-dismember-the-alamo-2023">Dismember the Alamo</a></b> at the Alamo Drafthouse in Woodbury. This is a hault even if you live in the Twin Cities, but the Alamo is the best place in the state to see films. They have great projection, comfortable seats, plus they serve food and drinks during the show. They also have zero tolerance for movie talkers and people using there phones. We should be so lucky to have a theater like this in Kato! The first time we went the first movie was <b><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bdCWmuNCxHI&t=55s&pp=ygULbWFkbWFuIDE5ODE%3D">Madman</a></b>, a film that Shelley had talked about for years as standard slumber party fare, that she hadn't seen since high school. The final movie of the day was <b><a href="https://archive.org/details/the-return-of-the-living-dead-vhs-rip.-original-theatrical-audio">Return of the Living Dead</a></b>, which is a stone classic by anyone's standards. In between those two was a lot of fun, games, and special gift bags for everyone that attended.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">After that first year there was a two year haitus due to global health concerns, but it was back in 2022. The films this year were pretty underwhelming. One of the features was a compilation of movie trailers, which was kind of lame, but the lamest part of it was that many of the trailers had already been shown before and between features. By the final film people were leaving. It was disappointing to say the least. Initially we had thought this was a problem created by the programmer of the Woodbury Alamo, but a video I saw said that all Alamo theaters were told to play the same thing, so this is an issue from corporate. Hopefully the theater will have a chance to program a unique lineup this year.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhcmTaJjRowz04etMRrsPiIRdg4L3B0EnCq6PcxjGbGsUQnjaXad4_oyBffM5CS6HelwY2KEhrnVRD2Tz_gYd95noPRKu23V8V1EaIdltZs_q903COxI5tyoYtTEtzicFWM45crdNWxHLpXS55xLQmTYWwRn8sdUjr31NavD9fibSLT6p0AuGqo" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="701" data-original-width="1246" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhcmTaJjRowz04etMRrsPiIRdg4L3B0EnCq6PcxjGbGsUQnjaXad4_oyBffM5CS6HelwY2KEhrnVRD2Tz_gYd95noPRKu23V8V1EaIdltZs_q903COxI5tyoYtTEtzicFWM45crdNWxHLpXS55xLQmTYWwRn8sdUjr31NavD9fibSLT6p0AuGqo" width="640" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">This year they're bringing back custom t-shirts and posters for the event, which they failed to do last year, so hopefully this means they're finding their way back to the way Dismember the Alamo was run before. The shirts and poster are an additional cost beyond the ticket, but everyone will get a commemerative patch. Will we return if this year is another disappointment? I say I'm on the fence with it, but I probably will. It's a unique movie going experience at a great theater with a bunch of movie nerds. This is as close to Grind-Fu Cinema as we can get these days, and those experiences need to be supported.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">ANYWAY, there's still a handful of tickets available, so if you can be at the Woodbury Alamo Drafthouse by noon you should go! <a href="https://drafthouse.com/twin-cities/show/agfa-presents-dismember-the-alamo-2023">CLICK THIS LINK FOR SEATING AND TICKETS!</a></div><p></p>SHUFFLE FUNCTIONhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03635504692226461593noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8120709.post-2380810540578363042023-10-27T22:19:00.000-05:002023-10-27T22:19:27.643-05:00COUNTDOWN TO HALLOWEEN POST #27: I JUST FOUND THE MOST AMAZING WEBSITE!<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMWUM0CyTP_Qz4snrtr9HAIKHOXa8c4y-UnjpRibfrKKMgQGG8VS-9imi1B9q34w2ryeuuRTy-JZT_FWmFUh8ntMGOokJhVeQx2TRRcj6u3-uw4cUZWDRrmlN2nacecNN8oczdClcda8xoarrFSRg-PCdo6E0T1dKpsJrjygg4ZRZBjeDMADCJ/s291/gh2.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="291" data-original-width="291" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMWUM0CyTP_Qz4snrtr9HAIKHOXa8c4y-UnjpRibfrKKMgQGG8VS-9imi1B9q34w2ryeuuRTy-JZT_FWmFUh8ntMGOokJhVeQx2TRRcj6u3-uw4cUZWDRrmlN2nacecNN8oczdClcda8xoarrFSRg-PCdo6E0T1dKpsJrjygg4ZRZBjeDMADCJ/w400-h400/gh2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div>While looking for a topic for today's blogpost I stumbled across Ravensblight.com that has dozens of amazing paper crafts that you can download and assemble on your own. If you listened this morning you were able to hear a virtually exclusive drammer that we were able to track down from a collector. It's one of two that we air that are unavailable anywhere other than the incredibly rare original pressings of his work, and we're thrilled that we've been able to make them a part of our countdown to Halloween each year. If you missed the broadcast you can listen to the show (and two weeks of previous shows) on demand via the KMSU streaming app! The app is made possible by Radio Heroes like you that support us during our pledge drive. Thank you for being the best! </p><p style="text-align: left;">Download the app today!<br /><span face=""Open Sans", Frutiger, "Frutiger Linotype", Univers, Calibri, "Myriad Pro", Myriad, Geneva, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif" style="background-color: white; color: #480059; font-size: 1.2em;">APPLE APP STORE: </span><a class="body-title" href="https://apps.apple.com/us/app/kmsu/id6444543718" rel="noopener" style="border-bottom: 1px solid currentcolor; box-sizing: border-box; color: #480059; font-family: "Open Sans", Frutiger, "Frutiger Linotype", Univers, Calibri, "Myriad Pro", Myriad, Geneva, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 1.2em; text-decoration-line: none; transition: all 0.15s ease-in-out 0s;" target="_blank">bit.ly/3WT1E7P</a><br /><span face=""Open Sans", Frutiger, "Frutiger Linotype", Univers, Calibri, "Myriad Pro", Myriad, Geneva, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif" style="background-color: white; color: #480059; font-size: 1.2em;">GOOGLE PLAY STORE: </span><a class="body-title" href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.publicmediaapps.kmsu" rel="noopener" style="border-bottom: 1px solid currentcolor; box-sizing: border-box; color: #480059; font-family: "Open Sans", Frutiger, "Frutiger Linotype", Univers, Calibri, "Myriad Pro", Myriad, Geneva, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 1.2em; text-decoration-line: none; transition: all 0.15s ease-in-out 0s;" target="_blank">bit.ly/3VW830K</a></p><p style="text-align: left;">We were talking about Judson Fountain yesterday morning, because we aired <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GibWQe_EXpQ&pp=ygUcanVkc29uIGZvdW50YWluIG5hc3R5IHJvb21lcg%3D%3D">The Nasty Roomer</a>, his final radio drammer appearance. It was written for an insanely rare appearance that Judson made with his old pal Sandor Weisberger on WFMU in 1995. The drammer itself is special, because it's essentially a greatest hits performance of his most beloved characters over the years, but the most interesting part of the broadcast was the interview with Judson. Little is known about him beyond his work, so it's a treat to hear him talk about his life and work.</p><p style="text-align: left;">The original broadcast doesn't appear to be available via the WFMU archives, but a rebroadcast from Irwin Chusid's show in 2002 is available to stream. I believe this is a condensed version of the show, but it highlights several examples of his work in addition to the interview. No thanks, Hollywood.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">One of my favorites from the last few years is 2019's <b>Scary Stories To Tell In the Dark</b>, which is based off the popular <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scary_Stories_to_Tell_in_the_Dark">trilogy of short stories by Alvin Schwartz</a>. The stories in these books draw heavily from urban legends and folklore, and they've been messing up young readers since 1981. I haven't read the stories (yet) so I didn't know what to expect from the film. I assumed it would be full of Disney Channel grade acting and production values, but I was pleasantly surprised. <b>Scary Stories To Tell In the Dark</b> is a well made and genuinely creepy movie.<br /><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgbUvWWdP9cMgxE5UoeV7FQ3nKH-_dqHztvlJpopvXAEzwn21qkINOTrm3XF45AhA_9pkYTieV-3kp67BFJGmyW3NOjS9M-P8oux6C6-EzXpX-Ywsae9JXcIV1FYFEvcQBkRAaxWVIr8gXfy0z49JVa9C017AdwXZAkqh6Rbu_7ZJ0s6m2t_MwJ" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="1501" data-original-width="1001" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgbUvWWdP9cMgxE5UoeV7FQ3nKH-_dqHztvlJpopvXAEzwn21qkINOTrm3XF45AhA_9pkYTieV-3kp67BFJGmyW3NOjS9M-P8oux6C6-EzXpX-Ywsae9JXcIV1FYFEvcQBkRAaxWVIr8gXfy0z49JVa9C017AdwXZAkqh6Rbu_7ZJ0s6m2t_MwJ=w427-h640" width="427" /></a></div><br /><div style="text-align: left;"><b>Scary Stories</b> is really only an anthology because it's based on an anthology. It takes previously unrelated stories and weaves them into an overarching tale that follows a group of childhood friends trying to deal with a horrific mystery. What surprised me most about this is that the film really doesn't pull any punches. This isn't a kiddie version of the stories. There's gore and serious consequences to what takes place. Part of this is because the original stories were pretty freaky, but it's probably also because Guillermo Del Toro is one of the producers. <a href="http://www.lacma.org/art/exhibition/guillermo-del-toro-home-monsters">The dude knows creepy</a>.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">Another thing that surprised me about <b>Scary Stories To Tell In the Dark</b> is that it's a well executed period piece. The film takes place on Halloween 1968 in a fictional Pennsylvania town. It doesn't shy away from Vietnam, Nixon, racism, and other ugly elements of that year. Beyond that, it seems to get the details of popular American culture correct. None of that superficial "It's 1985 look at my huge cell phone and I love neon" type of thing that so many era specific movies use to gloss over their lack of interest in getting things right. The entire environment of the movie feels organic to the story, which goes a long way with making things ever scarier.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">Critical reception was mixed, but what do critics know? Rotten Tomatoes gives it a 77% rating, which is not too shabby. I kind of think that means 23% of the reviews are wildly wrong, but whatever. The film sets up a sequel, which was announced in 2020, but so far no news on progress. THANKS, COVID! </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">Scary Stories To Tell In the Dark is currently streaming all over the place. Check it out.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">FUN FACT: The director of this movie is <span style="background-color: #f8f9fa; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">André Øvredal, who also directed the excellent <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uvwEyHeRSvE&pp=ygUUdHJvbGwgaHVudGVyIHRyYWlsZXI%3D">Troll Hunter</a> and the recent (but mediocre) <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6FgUUO9Ztd0&pp=ygUmdGhlIGxhc3Qgdm95YWdlIG9mIHRoZSBkZW1ldGVyIHRyYWlsZXI%3D">The Last Voyage of the Demeter</a>.</span></span></div></div><p></p><div style="text-align: center;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Vlya92LZqZw?si=YlirsvcReyVI9wyB" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe></div>SHUFFLE FUNCTIONhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03635504692226461593noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8120709.post-30722135721095400922023-10-23T16:13:00.001-05:002023-10-23T16:13:15.857-05:00Countdown To Halloween Post # 23: Gary "Spider" Webb<p>This morning I played part one and two of The Cave by Gary "Spider" Webb. I love this 45 because it is sooooooo goofy. A guy and a girl get lost in a cave and spend the sides of a 45 yelling back and forth to each other and dodging bats. It's pretty fantastic. Have a listen below in case you missed it.</p><p> The Cave Part One</p><p style="text-align: center;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/ps4fGoMFjsc?si=bLIYI5jqTsvCnaos" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe> </p><p> The Cave Part Two</p><p style="text-align: center;">

Apparently he was a drummer - in fact he toured with the Hollywood Argyles, famous for playing Alley Oop, although he didn't play on the track. Have a listen to Drum City.</p><p>Drum City Part One</p><p style="text-align: center;">

There is a band called The Sci-Fis that released a song called Science Friction Parts 1 and 2. About halfway through Part 1, the drummer and guitarist start playing the drum beat of The Cave! It's perfectly normal for people to be curious about the darker side of humanity, because it's so insane and inconceivable that humans can be so cruel towards others, but it's hard for me to get past the fact that this is entertainment derived from the pain of others. That doesn't change the fact that I still watch True Crime documentaries.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">Recently I fully exploited the seven day trial subscription available from MGM+ to watch <b>Psycho: the Lost Tapes of Ed Gein</b>. This four part documentary explores the almost mythological crimes of Ed Gein and plays, for the first time ever, interrogation tapes made the night he was arrested for them. It's hard to believe that after all the times this story has been told over the years that his voice has never been heard. Outside a few moments of film taken after his arrest, there's little beyond second hand accounts and court records to even tell the story.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEh7jUZ4mDFJMZm_JdS_KxltZuhubkrkRmDzBLnoEXgcoykmM7cWettEZoTxDhK2n8pdOuu6vtBsfZti6w5BifbgqX2MuD3Hvnp9N21pbKLFxbhTI2r0I9OOTKVbL3OjNmzmt_MN-Zcn_mU3wL0gQrpoYzEp4w5WrowY1VkNJ_FHNw33fw4SdkBd" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="730" data-original-width="1358" height="344" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEh7jUZ4mDFJMZm_JdS_KxltZuhubkrkRmDzBLnoEXgcoykmM7cWettEZoTxDhK2n8pdOuu6vtBsfZti6w5BifbgqX2MuD3Hvnp9N21pbKLFxbhTI2r0I9OOTKVbL3OjNmzmt_MN-Zcn_mU3wL0gQrpoYzEp4w5WrowY1VkNJ_FHNw33fw4SdkBd" width="640" /></a></div><br />My continued fascination with his story lies with the fact that it has had such a powerful influence on popular culture. Films like <b>Psycho</b> and <b>The Texas Chainsaw Massacre </b>are based squarely on Gein's story and acts. <b>Psycho</b> draws on the psychology of it, where <b>Chainsaw </b>deals more directly with the crimes. What happened in the small town of Plainfield, WI in the 1950s is incomprehensible by today's standards, let alone when they happened, and I think that's why the story endures today and inspired this four part documentary. That's definitely why I had to give it one more look and spend four more hours with it.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">Four more hours. I'm gonna be honest and say that this could have been a single two hour documentary. Maybe an hour and a half. The big draw is the never before heard recordings of Gein speaking with investigators about what happened, and much of what is played is heard over and over again in every episode. The novelty of hearing his voice is fascinating, but the tapes aren't a treasure trove of information. If anything, these recordings present a scenario where the investigators seem to be leading Ed with their questions and he mostly goes along with what they say. He does admit to things, but many of these confessions are him just going along with their theories and guess work. This isn't to say that they're wrong or that Gein didn't do all the horrible things he was accused of. He was SO guilty. It's just that an interrogation like that wouldn't be allowed today, and might not even be admissible in court.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b>Psycho: the Lost Tapes of Ed Gein </b>is a time investment that might be worth if for someone that feels like they need to watch and read everything about this story, but it's repetitive and bloated. Each of the four hour long episodes repeats the same gruesome stories and grisly crime scene photos. There's literally no reason that it had to be four hours in total. If you want to hear what his voice sounded like, there's a brief clip in the trailer for the show. I would assume that at some point someone will make a super cut of the tape clips and post them on YouTube. That will save approximately three hours and 55 minutes of your time.</div></div><p></p><div style="text-align: center;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/mmr1LabsMJ0?si=EOqLcTF9ulKZBZNQ" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe></div>SHUFFLE FUNCTIONhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03635504692226461593noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8120709.post-51655928002915482262023-10-21T12:32:00.004-05:002023-10-21T12:32:52.807-05:00COUNTDOWN TO HALLOWEEN #21: LOOKING FOR THE MAGIC<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjecJ2fGSzWtgyFfOEDhwniV6nJD9wSpcKBbf2fy6DeTO4VjziR3t6R8MjhDebvR3rYdoo0czUp6PnzGYnUvl4wffqFNnAlaBFTZ3N_xOds0MIMGZz0Fx6zjA4wmyIK9VVJxLsH_xTZn3O4R2WEoXHEr7LpblF39FpTte-yS38r_T048jxrUoqV/s1200/youre-next.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="630" data-original-width="1200" height="210" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjecJ2fGSzWtgyFfOEDhwniV6nJD9wSpcKBbf2fy6DeTO4VjziR3t6R8MjhDebvR3rYdoo0czUp6PnzGYnUvl4wffqFNnAlaBFTZ3N_xOds0MIMGZz0Fx6zjA4wmyIK9VVJxLsH_xTZn3O4R2WEoXHEr7LpblF39FpTte-yS38r_T048jxrUoqV/w400-h210/youre-next.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p>What a beautiful Saturday! I hope you are planning on joining us for all the fun!</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaniiM3f9dXzRrRtaBlK-OQ7LAvCLHQtatsvqASd0KxQx-BunCCW9meiHYPsnbuW_yGCz4uXvg48GBLcrUBMQqBZIypzG1IRB9q2ghkm4Y3On6xQfMUQFO370Nj-qdrMRMXY8vL_oDNBF_wtbECPSBJ__Pdqu5aOgpeBLjodJDafKwB4ByYQr2/s228/dwight%20t.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="228" data-original-width="221" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaniiM3f9dXzRrRtaBlK-OQ7LAvCLHQtatsvqASd0KxQx-BunCCW9meiHYPsnbuW_yGCz4uXvg48GBLcrUBMQqBZIypzG1IRB9q2ghkm4Y3On6xQfMUQFO370Nj-qdrMRMXY8vL_oDNBF_wtbECPSBJ__Pdqu5aOgpeBLjodJDafKwB4ByYQr2/w388-h400/dwight%20t.jpg" width="388" /></a></div><br /><p>This week we learned that musician Dwight Twilley passed away at the age of 72. I had known about his power pop prowess, but it wasn't until the movie You're Next came out that I heard any of his music, and then I fell head over heels in love with his song Looking For The Magic. This song is played over and over again in the film, and it is hooky and catchy as all get out. Have a listen for yourself.</p>

If you have not seen the film You're Next (maybe you missed it when we played it at Grind-Fu Cinema?), I highly recommend it, especially this time of year. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div>

Everybody loves these slow moving little guys. I just assume at this point that I've watched every video of a sloth being helped across a busy road, so it makes sense that I'd want to watch a Horror movie about a kill crazy sloth. You heard me right: KILL CRAZY SLOTH. The movie is <b>Slotherhouse</b>, and it just landed on Hulu.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">This is another situation where the movie just became available, so I don't want to give away to much. The story deals with a sorority girl that is looking for a way to improve her social media numbers. She learns from a chance encounter at a mall with an exotic animal smuggler (WHAT) that sloths and other unusual animals often result in increased traffic for influencers. She makes arrangements to get a sloth, and that's when all Hell breaks loose.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">You might think you know what to expect from <b>Slotherhouse</b>, but I assure you that you have no idea. It's puzzling to me that it wasn't made by The Asylum for SyFy, as this is right up their alley, but it does have slightly higher production values than one of those movies. Maybe it was too rich for their blood. Whatever the reason, we should just be grateful that the movie was made at all. It's not great, but it's very fun. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><b>POINTS SUBTRACTED</b>: There's a song called Gimme More that's on the soundtrack with the lyric "John Lennon on the roof of the BBC". Cadman secrets Ramsay out of prison and makes him his assistant for a series of experiments on the human brain to try and resurrect his comatose wife. It gets kind of muddled after that. The movie is well made and atmospheric, but it got kind of hard to follow.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">ANYWAY, it has Chaney Jr, Tor, Bela, and Carradine but their roles are pretty small. It seemed to me like it was pretty deliberate stunt casting, but they're great. Chaney, Tor, and Lugosi are all mutes, and Tor is essentially Lobo from Ed Wood's <b>Bride of the Monster</b>. I normally find John Carradine insanely hammy, but that works in his favor here. He plays a delusional madman that thinks he's fighting the crusades and he'll declare it to anyone that will listen.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">Is it a great film? Not really, but it's weird and fun, and it's a great time seeing all these stars on screen together. It's also nice to see Bela in a well made film at the end of his career. <b>The Black Sleep</b> came out in June of 1956, and Bela died in August of that year. It's a little more noble than his notorious appearance in <b>Plan 9 From Outer Space</b>. This is a movie that doesn't show up very often, so don't miss this chance to stream it while you can.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjk022DJpAUiw9xDRMAWBmESg4JYWZdpD2WW4aPq1RWJbzaBTRyWQDdR8ZcSeMmwdBba5KkHqm3WBGbLlRdHSGE1D1sS_ikkV0z67ryA-rsl9B3HJIChkVxVU2bJhJVdDA7rLKdt_BCBEGZNQ7USscrHaTiTm95JeJIVHtxYEt3DlUE101YIlsw" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="242" data-original-width="640" height="242" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjk022DJpAUiw9xDRMAWBmESg4JYWZdpD2WW4aPq1RWJbzaBTRyWQDdR8ZcSeMmwdBba5KkHqm3WBGbLlRdHSGE1D1sS_ikkV0z67ryA-rsl9B3HJIChkVxVU2bJhJVdDA7rLKdt_BCBEGZNQ7USscrHaTiTm95JeJIVHtxYEt3DlUE101YIlsw=w640-h242" width="640" /></a></div><br /><br /></div>SHUFFLE FUNCTIONhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03635504692226461593noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8120709.post-21374447353079897932023-10-16T05:14:00.001-05:002023-10-16T07:22:34.880-05:00CHECK OUT THE 2023 FALL PLEDGE DRIVE SWAG!<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikWegdyQ0aN8fYYf4_zDh50JJi3MJ87eZ8EyFsDXqS0AR8Q8_wPaNfMfeMojshqtd6jV1Rjoy9JH82cGW0-8mYKaiiNooeQ3Toq4T-g87yTmhgydFOX373PsJd6m72Ztl4A9R75y9Pe4q2dezEt6COHA6EOe3xHaApbiKB08H3aQ9zNTRrDdaK/s957/2023%20Fall%20Pledge%20Drive%20Banner%20W%20Sidebars.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="362" data-original-width="957" height="242" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikWegdyQ0aN8fYYf4_zDh50JJi3MJ87eZ8EyFsDXqS0AR8Q8_wPaNfMfeMojshqtd6jV1Rjoy9JH82cGW0-8mYKaiiNooeQ3Toq4T-g87yTmhgydFOX373PsJd6m72Ztl4A9R75y9Pe4q2dezEt6COHA6EOe3xHaApbiKB08H3aQ9zNTRrDdaK/w640-h242/2023%20Fall%20Pledge%20Drive%20Banner%20W%20Sidebars.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><p></p><h2 style="text-align: center;">The Fall Pledge Drive Starts on Wednesday, October 18th</h2>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a class="arrow-link" href="https://give.communityfunded.com/o/minnesota-state-university---mankato/i/kmsu/s/kmsufall24" title="See All the Available Swag Online and Pledge Today"><span style="font-size: large;">See All the Available Swag Online and Pledge Today</span></a><br />NOTE: This link will go live on Wednesday!</p>
<p>Gang, the Fall Pledge Drive starts this Wednesday. This is one of two times during the year where we come to you and ask for your generous support to help keep KMSU on the air. We're hoping you'll take some time and make a donation to help us hit our $30,000 goal for the drive. $30,000 is nothing to sneeze at, but we're true believers in the station and its place in the community. This 60th anniversary year has seen major leaps in upgrades and how we broadcast. The KMSU streaming app has been a game changer, allowing you to stream KMSU live or listen to our locally produced shows on demand. We also created The Minnesota Music Channel, a 24 hour station devoted to music coming from the Land of 10,000 Lakes. Your donations have made these things possible. Thank you. </p>
<p>KMSU has a major investment that will be a long term goal for us. Our backup transmitter failed during recent maintenance on our primary transmitter. This is significant because we rely on it to keep us on the air when the primary transmitter requires repairs and upgrades. We also need it in case our primary unexpectedly fails. Without a backup we're in a pretty vulnerable position, so in addition to raising money for basic operating costs, we're also saving to put a new backup transmitter in place. </p>
<p>Please take a moment and consider the place KMSU holds in your life. If you listen to the station regularly, if you've found shows that you know and love, then you're probably a true believer, and you realize that what KMSU offers to you and the community can't be found anywhere else. This kind of programming can only continue with the generous support of our listeners, and we hope you'll give us a call or pledge online to help us out. Any amount makes a huge difference, but we have some great swag available at different pledge levels to hopefully nudge you towards making a contribution. And now...</p>

This low budget classic launched the careers of director Sam Raimi, actor Bruce Campbell, and a few other names and faces you'd probably recognize from work they did later. Joel Coen, from such hits as ALL COEN BROTHERS MOVIES, even edited the workshed scene! <b>The Evil Dead</b> still stands as one of the most terrifying films of all time, made all the more impressive because of its budget and the fact that virtually everyone involved had little to no film experience. It spawned two sequels, a TV series based around Campbell's Ash character, as well as two recent reboot films. Not too shabby.</p><p>As a first time film maker, Sam Raimi thought the best way to raise funds for the film would be to create proof-of-concept short film to drum up interest. He cast his childhood friend Bruce Campbell in the lead and brought in a bunch of other friends to fill out the cast and crew. Raimi and Campbell made loads of 8mm films growing up, and even held screenings of them at a local movie theater, so they had built up some low budget tricks by the time they go to this stage. $1600 later they had <b>Within the Woods</b>, a 28 minute early version of <b>The Evil Dead</b>. Raimi convinced a Detroit theater to run it before a weekly screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and it went over well. This is mainly due to music copyright, because they used quite a bit of music without receiving permission. Ultimately it's not considered profitable to spend a ton of money to clear what is essentially a home video extra, no matter how significant the film may be. Fortunately there have been dubs of the film that made it into the world, though at this point they're miserable quality. Still, the fanatics will put up with a lot to see something new, so here's <b>Within the Woods</b> in all its grainy 8mm multi-generation dubbed glory via archive.org.</p><p>P.S.: Watch that <b>Incredibly Strange Film Show</b> episode I posted that features Sam Raimi. It features quite about about <b>Within the Woods</b> and highlights some of the low budget tricks they used to make <b>The Evil Dead</b> so scary. Then just go ahead and watch all of the Incredibly Strange Film Show episodes. How on earth does that happen?! I was just started to be too old to play games but my family is a game playing family so I was still playing board games with my friends and family, just not as often. I wonder what other cool games are out there to be discovered? Well I did a little deep dive and found a few. I think this would be a horribly expensive hobby to pick up, right Tim?!</p>

I'm pretty sure it was one of the first R rated horror movies I saw in the theater, too. Somewhere in my multitude of boxes I have my original HBO taped copy of the film, which I watched endlessly. As amazing as this movie is, it was pretty unavailable anywhere until the early 2000s, and even then in an altered state. </p><p>Everybody gives the zombie movies of George Romero top billing, and for good reason. They established the zombie film genre, and <b>Night of the Living Dead</b> and <b>Dawn of the Dead</b> are rightly regarded as masterpieces. Still, let's not forget about <b>Return of the Living Dead</b>, that little zombie movie that could. Here are some fun facts about the film that you may not know.</p><p><b><u>DAN O'BANNON, GENRE MOVIE ZELIG</u></b><br /><b>Return of the Living Dead</b> was written and directed by Dan O'Bannon. He also had a hand in some other amazing films of note:</p><p></p><ol style="text-align: left;"><li>Dan O'Bannon's first film was <b>Dark Star</b>, which was also John Carpenter's first film. O'Bannon was the editor.</li><li>He wrote <b>Alien</b>. Friggin' <b>Alien</b>. He also supervised special effects on the film.</li><li>O'Bannon helped create the legendary animated film <b>Heavy Metal</b>, and wrote the 'Soft Landing' and 'B-17' segments.</li><li>He co-wrote Tobe Hooper's space vampire film <b>Lifeforce</b>.</li><li><b>Total Recall</b> was also co-written by O'Bannon.</li><li>Oh yeah, he also worked on <b>STAR WARS</b>. O'Bannon worked on the computer display animation.<br /><br /></li></ol><div><div style="text-align: center;"><b><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/iF-GYOFVHx8?si=GUh8L6jqK_ENxgPx" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe></b></div><b><u><br />BRAAAAAAAAAAINS!</u></b><br />Everybody takes it for granted that zombies have always craved brains, but the first place that trope existed was was in <b>Return of the Living Dead</b>. Before that zombies were just a bunch of flesh eaters. The hunger for brains is most profoundly expressed by the iconic Tarman zombie. A weird thing about his scenes is that in all the post VHS versions of the film his voice is pitched much lower. I haven't been able to find a reason why that was done, but I'm assuming it's because someone with poor decision making skills thought it would be scarier. Even with the change during the film, the original voice can be heard during the closing credits montage. </div><div><br /></div><div>Here's a YouTube clip narrated by someone that could use and editor discussing the voice change.</div><div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/cCiL0O4tyvI?si=Z0UaFJzr5rUBpldg" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe></div></div><div><br /></div><div><b><u>EXCELLENT SOUNDTRACK</u></b></div><div>Let's talk about the excellent soundtrack for a sec. That photo at the top is me holding my original Enigma pressing of it. I'm pretty sure that was the first place I ever heard The Cramps and Roky Erickson, not to mention every other band on it. Years and years ago I was pretty active in the VHS tape trading world, and that's when I first came across the workprint of this movie. A workprint is rough edit of the film, often featuring temporary soundtrack music and additional footage. Notable examples of this are the <a href="https://archive.org/details/vts-01-4_20220223"><b>Apocalypse Now</b></a> five hour edit featuring A LOT of helicopter, and the 4 1/2 edit of <b><a href="https://archive.org/details/this-is-spinal-tap-workprint">This Is Spinal Tap</a></b>. The downside of these early workprints is that they're often low quality because they were duped endlessly over the years.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="480" mozallowfullscreen="true" src="https://archive.org/embed/the-return-of-the-living-dead-rough-workprint" webkitallowfullscreen="true" width="640"></iframe></div><div><br />As you can see, the <b>Return of the Living Dead</b> workprint on archive.org is miserable quality, but if you're an obsessive you'll put up with a lot to see a bonus 20 minutes. Apparently t<a href="https://shoutfactory.com/products/the-return-of-the-living-dead-collector-s-edition-1?variant=40080739336326">he Scream Factory blu ray</a> has the workprint as an extra, but I've read that was taken from a standard definition videotape, which probably wasn't the greatest quality in the first place. WHY DON'T I OWN THIS?!?!?! There are several differences between this version and the released film, but too many to mention, so <a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089907/alternateversions/">FOLLOW THIS LINK</a> for a list.</div><div><br /></div><div>Wait a minute...have you never seen <b>Return of the Living Dead</b>? Today I want to talk about what is referred to in the Appalachian mountains as the "Look Behinds". For Appalachian natives it is common knowledge that if you are walking in the woods alone and you hear a voice either say your name, or just say "hey" as if trying to get your attention, you do not stop and reply. You continue on your way - briskly, and get out of the woods as soon as you can. It is believed that there are shadowy creatures that inhabit the woods and they will try to slow you down and distract you enough to leave you vulnerable to an attack. If you were to run away when you hear your name, these creatures would then know that you have spotted them and they will try to attack. In fact, the saying goes "If you heard someone call your name in the woods, no you didn't. If you see something out in the woods, no you didn't". Keep walking is the rule of thumb. Click on this link to hear all of the rules: <a href="https://youtube.com/shorts/QYBCS16ZwhU?si=n_c4wWpFSbRYa-Hh">https://youtube.com/shorts/QYBCS16ZwhU?si=n_c4wWpFSbRYa-Hh</a> </p><p>and <a href="https://youtube.com/shorts/lQj_ZQtIDx4?si=BxB3vwtVZXP80-_p">https://youtube.com/shorts/lQj_ZQtIDx4?si=BxB3vwtVZXP80-_p</a></p><p> I wish there were some videos that I could share hear of this phenomenon occurring. I have seen some you tube clips but they don't really capture the phenomenon. This may act as proof for why these things don't exist in some people's minds, but it makes sense to me. As someone who has spent my fair share of walking alone in the woods, I don't ever have my phone camera on and just waiting to capture something creepy. In fact when I have come across some innocent wildlife all of a sudden and have wanted to photograph them, I can't get my phone out on time to capture a picture. So this doesn't bother me that much.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxZaxt79K_OjmcdFQroQ_egc-TDHI6X6wCCw7a9ivLmkwfgdNgPEfxeDssBr04lKCuMJvBaPuFAtoYYPC3nViMlpfAzIicSRfJyA1H9btpb8V-_1JoZTGCmJf9xpky1SI7g9qyOIAK1i8vQVmwIVMSpiK8mQCfOptD7xqtjlldl5LnZRol4i_W/s1024/phantomwhistler.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1024" data-original-width="1024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxZaxt79K_OjmcdFQroQ_egc-TDHI6X6wCCw7a9ivLmkwfgdNgPEfxeDssBr04lKCuMJvBaPuFAtoYYPC3nViMlpfAzIicSRfJyA1H9btpb8V-_1JoZTGCmJf9xpky1SI7g9qyOIAK1i8vQVmwIVMSpiK8mQCfOptD7xqtjlldl5LnZRol4i_W/s320/phantomwhistler.png" width="320" /></a></div><br /> There are however plenty of websites that are dedicated to the rich storytelling tradition found in Appalachia. He did four other films during that 20 year stretch, but none of them were zombie movies. Not that he didn't try.</p><p>For a brief shining moment in the late 1990s we were almost blessed with <b>George Romero's Resident Evil</b>, his take on the popular horror video game. It seems like a dream situation with the Godfather of zombie horror interpreting a horror game in the same genre. Deals were made, <a href="https://www.dailyscript.com/scripts/resident_evil_romero.html">scripts were written</a>, and plans were in motion. Heck, he even directed an ad for the Resident Evil 2 game during this period! </p><p style="text-align: center;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/PcDjo_uKeF4?si=1jx2Jqmlnd0jq95P" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe></p><p>Sadly, this match made in heaven never happened. Word on the street is that <a href="https://residentevil.fandom.com/wiki/Resident_Evil_(Romero_script)">Romero's vision for the game</a> was much darker and more violent than expected, and the producers thought it would be impossible to market. It would likely receive an X or NC-17 rating, which would limit the number of theaters it could show in. As one producer put it:<br /><br /><i>"With George would could have done a great zombie movie with a very, very limited audience. We could not have shown it to a regular theater, we could not have shown it on television and the video would have been sold in the X rated section. Then you can make a $2-million movie, but not a big event movie."</i></p><p>Fair enough. With Romero you get a George Romero movie, even if it's someone else's intellectual property. If you're making a zombie film you're gonna get that with a vengeance. Resident Evil was a massively profitable video game series, and producers naturally wanted to cash in. A limited audience release, no matter how prestigious, wouldn't exactly print money. Romero was dropped from the project and he allegedly found out when some some fans/reporters asked him to comment. Classy.</p><p>If you're intrigued by this what-if movie, you'll be excited to hear that there's a documentary on the way. <b>George Romero's Resident Evil</b> features interviews with folks involved, including Romero, and it goes into detail about the promise of the project and how it all went wrong. No details on the release date, but there's a trailer to make you desperate for more.</p><div style="text-align: center;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/l5_pB2Z0y6g?si=U78GYJx_5F1xrJ0h" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe></div>SHUFFLE FUNCTIONhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03635504692226461593noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8120709.post-90442487756072527952023-10-11T09:45:00.003-05:002023-10-11T09:45:30.471-05:00COUNTDOWN TO HALLOWEEN #11: WHO KNEW EDGAR WINTER COULD RAP?<p> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgByISeFebdlInGtwyEus8d1QjDQD0OalkGFQkDTcK7fylKqUmHCHn1dyDWqAO8aMlxga2UuQb7W3uYlCy3HcMIXiSLf-NnAoEBwfjO29xvC7vR0TTOKRzqO09sAQwqjf-t6ZM_Ibxkwsvb6psaD_LiiurEztldqZ7_a2OxHFNMyg24KjCOUQlK/s1200/297_Frankenstein-1984-Monster-Rap-mp3-image.webp" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1200" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgByISeFebdlInGtwyEus8d1QjDQD0OalkGFQkDTcK7fylKqUmHCHn1dyDWqAO8aMlxga2UuQb7W3uYlCy3HcMIXiSLf-NnAoEBwfjO29xvC7vR0TTOKRzqO09sAQwqjf-t6ZM_Ibxkwsvb6psaD_LiiurEztldqZ7_a2OxHFNMyg24KjCOUQlK/w400-h400/297_Frankenstein-1984-Monster-Rap-mp3-image.webp" width="400" /></a></p><p>This morning I brought in a radio promo 12" from Body Rock Records for Edgar Winter's re-recording of his big hit song Frankenstein. He called this version FRANKENSTEIN 84, and as the letter included with my promo states, "Edgar played all of the instruments and produced it along with Tom Silverman. The recording was made with the most advanced digital and analog synthesizers and drum machines but a real sax is on it as well as the same dusty synthesizer that Edgar played on the original. You'll hear human heartbeats, thunder and other effects from Frankenstein's laboratory."</p><p>Now that's all well and good - but the real reason that I picked this up is because of what is on side two, something called FRANKENSTEIN 1984 (Monster Rap). As the promo reads, "yes, Edgar actually raps!". This I have to hear!</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8Ug_5-C0CdtM3jJoRzyASiAOgGWu12FIqwoixedwNnhNqK_mw5J8ZgAVhwxtlu2TFyzYodUBHXxtFIQdKQuPpvI5AvAhCSS3b2w_DVTIf1MP3lA_AIitSKIeSlFZN5Fj1gHET1Vfbr26QZN_3cSZS0vnwCVpQ3poUtxu6AzpD3zq1K5j1ikUU/s1600/FRANKENSTEIN.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8Ug_5-C0CdtM3jJoRzyASiAOgGWu12FIqwoixedwNnhNqK_mw5J8ZgAVhwxtlu2TFyzYodUBHXxtFIQdKQuPpvI5AvAhCSS3b2w_DVTIf1MP3lA_AIitSKIeSlFZN5Fj1gHET1Vfbr26QZN_3cSZS0vnwCVpQ3poUtxu6AzpD3zq1K5j1ikUU/s320/FRANKENSTEIN.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p>We played it this morning on Shuffle Function, but because it is almost 10 minutes long and we had just played Judson Fountain's Granny Sing No More Radio Drama yesterday, I thought I'd better include an escape plan. And so I said that if we had three texts from three different listeners, I would stop the song a.s.a.p. and play something else. Then I hit the start button on the record player. Almost immediately a listener pointed out that it had a definite Revenge Of The Nerds vibe to it. Edgar Winter does indeed rap, or talk angrily in rhymes might be a better way to describe it. The texts that came in were overwhelmingly supportive, with just one listener asking for us to stop. In case you missed it, I will share it with you here. I hope you get a kick out of it! </p>

Evangelist Billy Graham said "there is the power of evil in this film, in the very fabric of the film itself", which probably did more to put butts in the seats than convince people to stay away. Viewers were reported to have physical reactions to the movie like vomiting and fainting, and still screenings were sold out and liner were around the block.</p><p style="text-align: center;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/AkIqFK3KoZ4?si=aGvUXj1_bL6CyVy4" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe></p><p>With the film a global sensation it was inevitable that there would be a sequel. The insufferable <b>Exorcist II</b>, as well as a string of films in the 2000s, tried and failed to capture the terror and magic of the original. Only 1990's <b>Exorcist III</b> succeeded at finding a way of adding to the original.</p><p>Recently Universal Pictures dropped a whopping 400 million dollars for the rights to the Exorcist brand, promising a new series of films with EVEN MORE EXORCISMS. The fact that their selling point for the new films is MORE EXORCISMS says to me that there is a real lack of understanding about why the original was so scary. More exorcisms doesn't equal bigger and better. If anything it just means the movies will be overindulgent. Which brings us to <b>The Exorcist: Believer</b>, which hit theaters last weekend.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgfJonTjEDnOWDu2vI1VVYk7y2R6yywMiQuTgwrv3E-TESF7Ab4MK9mYuoGQ1hJZ54BGPULdLPIuRFTwlxuZ44BHG-JP45YtH_aAnNIQDnStqUUo58NP6S6FQQwaXAuLIBKEQbNUrcIeQFVjYTf2JpfgK6m6fLp5ewbU9jVkzPe5VHCuhjs1_ZI" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="755" data-original-width="510" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgfJonTjEDnOWDu2vI1VVYk7y2R6yywMiQuTgwrv3E-TESF7Ab4MK9mYuoGQ1hJZ54BGPULdLPIuRFTwlxuZ44BHG-JP45YtH_aAnNIQDnStqUUo58NP6S6FQQwaXAuLIBKEQbNUrcIeQFVjYTf2JpfgK6m6fLp5ewbU9jVkzPe5VHCuhjs1_ZI=w432-h640" width="432" /></a></div><br />The latest addition to the saga is by collaborators David Gordon Green and Danny McBride, the folks responsible for shows like <b>East Bound and Down</b>, <b>Vice Principals</b>, and <b>The Righteous Gemstones</b>. They also did the recent <b>Halloween</b> trilogy. That trilogy, while not perfect, at the very least managed to put the Rob Zombie <b>Halloween</b> films in the rear view mirror. I was hoping that they'd bring that level of success to the new film, meaning "just don't be as bad as the last bunch".<p></p><p>As you may have heard, the reviews for the new film have been scathing. Honestly, any movie attempting to capture the magic of the original <b>Exorcist</b> film is in for an uphill battle. I'm always hesitant to give any impressions or details regarding new movies, especially ones that have only been out for a few days, because the last thing I want to do is spoil it for anyone, even if the film sucks. What I'll say is that it was fine. If it wasn't an Exorcist movie it'd probably be just as accepted as any random Blumhouse or Conjuring universe movie. It probably helped that I went in with super low expectations. There was plenty to roll my eyes at, but that's kind of how I react to a lot of the horror movies I see. In fact, my eye roll during <b>The Nun II</b> is being reviewed by the Guiness Book.</p><p><b>The Exorcist: Believer</b> has some good performances from Leslie Odom Jr, Ann Dowd, and Ellen Burstyn. They're all reliable names in any project they're linked to. It was great to see Ellen Burstyn reprise her role as Chris MacNeil, the mother from the original film. Everyone else was fine. It was fine. The movie was fine. It's a good enough horror movie for this Halloween season, which seems to be suffering a drought of scary movie choices.</p><p style="text-align: center;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/rSGeC880CYw?si=ULeB1dsWAa5-AuLW" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe></p>SHUFFLE FUNCTIONhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03635504692226461593noreply@blogger.com0
