The above image is the one that put me over the edge. There sits Francoise in her inifinite coolness, playing some unknown song that would no doubt take me out of the game. Shelley played this album during the vinyl hours of one of the 24 Hour Marathons, and I lost my ability to focus. She's so mysterious! I admit that part of that is because I CANNOT SPEAK FRENCH, but still. And, despite the fact that this album seems to be impossible to find, Shelley gave me her personal copy. That's the kind of co-host she is.

On this date in 1975 BBC Omnibus aired "Cracked Actor", an amazing documentary that follows David Bowie on his 1974 US tour. Bowie is in a pretty fragile place psychologically in this doc, and he was also at the height of his legendary cocaine addiction, so what you see is a combination of electrifying concert footage (this is the ONLY place to see film from this tour) and revealing interviews.

Apologies for the multi-part post, but it's worth watching.

Don't ask me why, because this never happens. I mean, I have no good explanation for why I woke up with Jerry Lewis on my mind. Other than his turn in Scorsese's King Of Comedy, I have no real affection for the man. So why it was that I woke up at 5:30 in the morning obsessing over his almost mythical film The Day The Clown Cried is a puzzler. Still, I spent the first two hours of my day trying to find out everything I could about it on the interwebs. And I here I am, five hours later, doing the same thing.

I'm sure we must have posted something about The Day The Clown Cried before. It's weird and tasteless and impossible to find, which means it's right up our alley. For those that don't know about this film, it can be summed up as such: Jerry Lewis plays a clown that leads kids to the gas chamber at Auschwitz. YEAH. If you're like me, you probably read that description and said "that sounds too unbelievable to NOT see! SHOW IT TO ME NOW!" Well, here's the rub: The film has never been released. In fact, probably only 10 people in the entire history of the world have ever even seen it.

Harry Shearer is one of the few people to have seen The Day The Clown Cried, which is almost too perfect. I mean, he is the ideal person to really understand everything that is wrong and unbelievable about this movie, and at the same time understand why these factors make the movie incredible. He described the movie in Spy Magazine like this: "if you flew down to Tijuana and suddenly saw a painting on black velvet of Auschwitz. You'd just think 'My God, wait a minute! It's not funny, and it's not good, and somebody's trying too hard in the wrong direction to convey this strongly-held feeling."

I know. You wanna see it even harder now, don't you? Well, you're still screwed. There is ONE copy in existence, and it's on 3/4" videotape in Jerry Lewis' private vault. The negatives are being held for ransom by a film lab in Sweden until the $600,000 bill is payed. The screenwriters refuse to allow its release. Jerry Lewis' own website says "Jerry hopes to someday complete the film, which remains to this day, a significant expression of cinematic art, suspended in the abyss of international litigation."

This movie aint comin' out.

SO... what can we turn to? There are two versions of the script floating around on the interwebs. The first is the original rough script by Joan O'Brien and Charles Denton, which is more serious in tone than the second and final version that Jerry Lewis rewrote and shot. Both version are available HERE at the Subterranean Cinema website. You can also find the full text of the 1992 Spy Magazine article that digs into the mythology of The Day The Clown Cried, and features interviews with many key players in the saga.

THE CULT OF CELEBRITY TRAINWRECK

I don't get the cult of celebrity trainwreck. I mean, I get the fascination in watching people self destruct, but celebrating people that live a grandly stupid life makes no sense to me. The cult of Sid Vicious, after all, is just the glorification of a junkie that couldn't play bass, murdered his girlfriend, and then OD'd, right? Still... sometimes a person just can't tear their eyes away...

This is an unaired performance from Johnny Thunders. It was filmed for Swedish television, and it will become apparent almost immediately why it was never aired. Enjoy?

Then, of course, there's this "classic" interview with Sid and Nancy. Poor Sid. His friends all say he used to be a lovely guy before the junk.

And completing the live music trainwreck, here's The Sex Pistols LIVE at the Longhorn Ballroom in Dallas, Texas, 1978. The band is ragged and electric, but Sid is a remarkable mess. He has carved "gimme a fix" into his chest, and at one point he is headbutted and proceeds to bleed all over himself.

Free Spirits, Vagabonds, Bigfoot and Me

Like many folks in their 40's, my fascination in Bigfoot began with the "In Search Of" episode. I can still remember how difficult it was to go to bed after watching it. Even though I was safe and sound in my urban bedroom, I was convinced that in the night I'd hear the pounding of heavy footsteps in the hall and see a giant hairy creature in the doorway. Also around that time the Six Million Dollar Man/Bionic Woman/Bigfoot episodes also aired, and I have been hooked ever since.

If you are a casual listener of Shuffle Function, then none of this is news to you. Bigfoot rumors and sightings crop up every now and then in our conversations. With the recent boon of paranormal and cryptozoological themed television shows, it is a good time to be a bigfoot fan. Animal Planet's Finding Bigfoot easily tops that list and has enjoyed a lot of media attention as of late. Admittedly there are a number of things that bother me about "Finding Bigfoot", namely how willing they are to declare that the evidence they find is "definitely Sasquatchy", but what I do like about the show is their willingness to actually go out into the field and do research. After watching and episode of "Finding Bigfoot" I am empowered with a sense of "Well, if they can do it, why can't I?".

In a year where Tim and I have decided to once again be "free spirits and vagabonds" for our New Years resolution, I am gong to have the opportunity to go out into the field and see what I can find. This week I officially became member of the 2012 Northern Minnesota BFRO Expedition. Around pledge drive time at KMSU, when we are hard pressed to get more pledges, we are fond of playing actual audio tapes of Tim playing 'Radio DJ' when he was ten years old. It's what he wanted to be when he grew up. If I had made such a tape at that age, it very well might have been me playing "Bigfoot Hunter"!! This is a dream come true for me, and one that I want to share with our listening audience. I plan on recording my experiences, with audio and video, and then airing it on Shuffle Function around Halloween time. I realize this is a pretty big "heads up" - my expedition isn't until September, but I am already making lists and preparations.

I will of course be keeping you all up to date on any developments, and in return feel free to send any questions or suggestions that you may have my way. As Tim so aptly put it when I told him about this,"You can't win the lottery if you never buy a ticket" and though I think the odds of me actually experiencing anything in my expedition are slim to none, I couldn't agree with him any more. We will never find bigfoot if we don't go out into the woods and try, and that's just what I'm going to do!

ROY ORBISON AND FRIENDS

Every time we play Roy Orbison on the show (like this morning) we end up discussing the amazing 1988 Cinemax special "Roy Orbison and Friends: Black and White Night". It's a full hour of amazing performances by Roy playing all his classics hits, filmed in black and white at the Cocoanut Grove nightclub. What first caught my eye, however, was his backing band.

The backing band was the TCB Band, which accompanied Elvis Presley from 1969 until his death in 1977: Glen D. Hardin on piano, James Burton on lead guitar, Jerry Scheff on bass, and Ronnie Tutt on drums. Male background vocalists, some of whom also joined in on guitar, were Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, Jackson Browne, J.D. Souther, and Steven Soles. The female background vocalists were k.d. lang, Jennifer Warnes, and Bonnie Raitt. Not too shabby.

If you haven't seen the new Rolling Stones Live In Texas 78 DVD, you need to see it IMMEDIATELY! Go out and get it and support the band and your local mom and pop shop! If you just can't wait, though, somebody has posted THE ENTIRE show on youtube. I don't know how long it will be up there, as I can't see the band approving of this, so don't waste time. This is one of the most exciting live performances I've seen on film.

VAN F'N HALEN!

Van Halen looms large in Shuffle Function legend. It was early on that we had a listener poll to see if I should listen to more Morrissey or if Shelley should listen to move Van Halen, and VH came out on top. People were LITERALLY yelling it from their cars at her. That's when Shelley became a convert.

News of Van Halen with David Lee Roth is always a good thing around these parts, so I'm excited to see and hear ANYTHING from the latest version of the band. They just released a video of a new song, PLUS they played a preview show at Cafe Wha? in New York. A tour has been announced, and 2012 is shaping up to be the year of VAN FREAKIN' HALEN!

Oh man.. I would have loved to have seen Flaming Lips and Yoko Ono on New Years Eve. Over the last couple of years I've become a huge Yoko fan, and the opportunity to see her live would be a dream come true. Sadly, money and time played against me. To make matters worse, I found out that they released a collaborative EP at the concert, and of course it is limited edition and gorgeous. AND WONDERFUL!

Yoko just posted the entire EP on imaginepeace.com, and you can listen to it and bask in the remarkable end results. It is epic and challenging and pretty amazing.

This morning Shelley and I went on for quite a bit about TV horror movie hosts, and how for many kids this was their first exposure to old horror and science fiction movies. I never had a regional horror movie host to call my own, but in the late 80s there was a guy called Commander USA that was on the USA Network Saturdays. He was my first exposure to badly dubbed Mexican horror, as well as a number of films that are most definitely Grind-Fu worthy.

On my quest to find loads of DVDs of the old shows, I came across a load of FULL EPISODES on youtube! JACKPOT! We need more stuff like this.

Legendary TV horror movie host John Zacherley (aka ZACHERLEY) apparently also hosted a TV dance party show called Disc-O-Teen. You never see local programming like this anymore. KIM JONG IL'S CRAZY MONSTER MOVIE!

Sure, we all know Kim Jong Il's reputation for running a starving isolationist country, as well as his penchant for escalating border tensions and nuclear posturing, but did you also know that he was a movie geek? He was such a geek, in fact, that he abducted a well known South Korean director and forced him to make movies for his regime! Aint that a lot of love?

In 1978 North Korean intelligence officers kidnapped South Korean film director Shin Sang-ok, on orders from Kim Jong Il. It was Kim Jong Il's dream to start a film studio to produce propaganda films that would impress the world. Shin directed seven films during his time in North Korea, the best know being Pulgasari. Shin eventually escaped in 1986. He then went to the U.S. and directed a few Three Ninjas movies. Anyway...

Pulgasari is giant monster film similar to Godzilla. The staff of Toho said in 1998 that they preferred Pulgasari to the recent U.S. remake of Godzilla, but that either means Pulgasari was great or slightly less crappy than the U.S. Godzilla. We'll leave that up to you. Here's the entire Pulgasari, presented in nine gloriously lo-fi parts via the youtubes. ENJOY!

It has been awhile since I've posted anything about bigfoot, and our conversation on the show this morning has prompted me to do just that. I found a great blog that collects only bigfoot news, videos and related stories. You can follow it here:

One of the best videos that I have seen in awhile can be found there. The video explains the circumstances surrounding the filming, so I won't go into great detail here. Have a look for yourself and see what you think.

This is another video that I found fascinating, and never knew it existed till I saw it here. It is from the infamous Patterson - Gimlin film, and shows the actual footprints on the sandbar of the creature they filmed that day. I had never seen this before.

There are very few people on this planet with a voice the likes of Matt Berry. I first fell under his spell when Shyboy Tim introduced me to the world of Garth Merenghei, and I will be a fan for life. For the past few days I have been without a satellite signal and relying on the on-lines and my DVD collection for entertainment. That is how I came across AD/BC on Network Awesome. During my Countdown To Halloween daily blogging I linked to Network Awesome a number of times. Believe you me, it is just as good as it's name would imply. So AD/BC has a lot of familiar faces if you are a fan of British Comedy - I will let you pick them out - but Matt Berry is simply amazing in this.

In this Rock Opera there are high notes hit so rocktastically awesome that you may shed a tear. A tear of joy, that is. So I won't dilly dally now, I want to watch part 3 of AD/BC and then I need to start getting ready to run the boards tomorrow morning on the 31st Anniversary of John Lennon's death. Tomorrow morning we are going to blow your minds, faithful radio listeners. We plan on diving deep into the intrigue and conspiracy of whether or not Paul McCartney died in a car accident November 9, 1966.

We have been gathering clues from album covers and listening to backward messages to make (or break) the case for McCartney's death. We're both pretty skeptical people, but this debate is both fascinating and entertaining at the same time. Perhaps my favorite bit of sleuthing on the Internet this afternoon comes from the following you tube clips. It is a documentary film from the Netherlands made in 2005, and it involves those who were at ground zero of this argument.

Hey, Gang! The Fall Pledge Drive is almost over! As of Thursday a.m. we had just under $6000 left to go. While that's a small amount in relation to the larger goal, it's a pretty large amount to have to raise in three days, especially since much of the weekend programming is syndicated.

Thanks to everyone who shared their creativity with us concerning the challenge I issued in the begining of the month. I asked that you use the photo above as your muse, and we had several takers. I would like to share a few of them now.

This story comes to us from Regis -

Jacob W. Hoover of West Union and the Gun That Killed the Zombie

My name is Hezekiah Hoover and I want to tell you the story about the bravest man I ever knew. As you may have guessed from the title of this tale that man was my grandfather Jacob Hoover. At the time of the Undead Upheaval or Zombie time as it was called it was 1906 and Jacob was pushing 75. I was the eldest of 6 children and I was 12.

We began reading stories in the Decorah paper which we got once a week about these creatures that seemed to come back from the dead. The first mentions that I can remember were about a town in Norway where the “draugen” had come out of nowhere and slaughtered the entire population. The next week there was a story about an entire province in China that had been destroyed by something called jiang shi. From the description it was obvious that it was the same kind of creature.

Finally in Spring of 1906 an article appeared that placed the creatures in San Francisco and New York. Nobody was able to pinpoint how it got started in California, but a tramp steamer was found adrift in the Atlantic near New York and this was blamed for the East coast infections. I say infections because that is the word that the scientists had used. When the steamer in New York was towed in, and the hatches were opened, a “stench like that from the gates of Hell” was emitted, and a hoard of bloody half eaten corpses descended on the would be rescuers like the locusts on the Egyptians. It didn’t take long before the entire city of New York was in panic as the plague grew.

Now I don’t know what year it might when you will read this. Maybe you still have zombies, but perhaps not. I know that a lot has been written about their behavior I just want to tell you what zombies were like in the time of my youth. Zombies are people you know. They can be your mother, or your sister. The fact is that once they are bitten they are infected; there isn’t any cure. You have to think of them in this way because it makes the killing that much easier.

Zombies are slow moving creatures. I read one account of a young man who thought of it as sport to run around leading one of these creatures. He kept it up for an hour and finally called out to his friend hidden safely in a tree that the one problem with this game was that the zombies just kept coming. Three hours later the young man, by now exhausted, was caught in the open when two additional slow mover appeared. After that it was just a matter of time.

The creatures do not tire, at least not in 1906. It was quickly discovered that the only way to “kill” a zombie is to destroy its brain. A bullet in the head works well as does a large rock in a pinch. Most anything that scrambles the brain has been shown to be effective. There were early tales of soldiers firing volleys into large numbers of the undead only to find that even with arms and legs missing they would continue to advance. A Boston newspaper reported that such a sight was so frightening that a group of 50 zombies was able to spread so much panic that 300 soldiers went running like school girls. One man later told the paper that the “sight of a little girl with only one arm and no legs clawing her way across the turf with her teeth all the while snapping together was more than any should human being should have to bear.” It was the week after this article appeared that we read about destroying the brain.

By this time my father started buying the Decorah Chronicle twice a week so that we could keep up on the progress of the “Undead Upheaval.” From what we read it appeared that the Rocky Mountains were a natural deterrent from the West so our eyes looked East for news. “The Undead are coming!” rang the headline, and come they did. New York to Philadelphia, to West Virginia and into Ohio and Kentucky west and south they spread. The day we got the paper with the headline which read, “Undead Overrun Chicago” we knew it was time to fully prepare.

Now I know that you are wondering whatever happened to Jacob Hoover, and now it is time to tell that part of the story. Jacob was a veteran of the Civil War. He enlisted because he believed in the Union of States, and he hated the Rebs because of something they did just to the south of us in Missouri. The Union Army was pleased to have him enlist, but because he was near 40 he was kept at Fort Atkinson in Iowa helping to “maintain order in the Midwestern frontier” as he would say with a wry grin. I always took that to mean that he didn’t do much and never got a look at a Rebel soldier or the waving of the Stars and Bars. He was always bitter about this, and when the chance came to fight Zombies I could actually see the life return to his features.

Plans were laid for our defense. My father and some of the farmers in the area decided against making a run for Decorah or Fort Atkinson. They reasoned that the zombies were following main roads for the most part because that is where the people were. Rarely did we read about little homesteads being attacked and father felt sure that they might even pass us by on their way West. He and his friends agreed to set up a bonfire, soak it with oil, and in the event of trouble they would ignite it and all the neighbors would come running. All of us kids were to climb into the loft of the barn and pull up the ladder and wait. Grandpa Jacob was assigned to be in the loft and keep the children in line. After the fact Jacob would say to me, “Boy, that is what really pissed me off. I sat out the war of the Republic and I wasn’t about to sit out the Zombie conflict.” The term Zombie Conflict gave the entire situation a comic tone in my mind. Some conflict! This was a massacre.

We got one more paper before we were introduced good and proper to the “Zombie Conflict”. My father read part of the article about a town in Illinois called Oak Bend. It was actually a village and was populated by an ultra religious group of crazies as dad called them. There were 250 souls in that village when the Zombies came a calling. One of the few survivors recounted how the elders had decided that zombies were the work of God’s hand and like Sodom and Gomorrah they were willing to suffer the retribution of turning their backs on God. And they all raised their arms and eyes to heaven and began to sing as they were slaughtered one by one. All the neighbors who had gathered at the farm shook their heads in amazement that these people just gave up, but I understood. I remember thinking that as true believers we needed to be responsible for neglecting god’s commandments. Those people probably thought of themselves as sinners and they took their medicine. I thought of myself sitting in school all day looking at the Olsrud twins and the things that I thought. Was I any better than the people of Oak Bend I wondered?

We practiced our defense a number of times. Someone would yell, ZOMBIES, and we would swing into action. My father and his brother Rob would take up positions on opposite sides of the pine stand in front of the house. There were small elevated platforms from which we would shoot venison, and they offered a good view of the area in front of the house. The creek in the rear of the property we hoped would protect our back. Jacob and mother would heard the children into the barn and up the ladder to the loft. Oh, and I forgot, I was the guy who would light the fire.

Finally the day came. It was October 31, 1906. The harvest was mostly finished. The cornfield was bare and the early mornings were beginning to have that frosty feel that precedes winter. If not for the anxiety we felt about zombies it would have been considered a good Fall. My brother Nathan and I were in the upper orchard near the house when I heard him mumble, “Zombie.” He was up in a tree pretty far, and I wasn’t quite what he had said when I saw the entire tree begin to tremble he was shaking that hard. I looked in the direction that Nathan pointed and saw two of the creatures. They looked so horrible. Covered in blood, big chunks of flesh missing, and I will never forget the vacant look in those dead eyes. I helped him down and we began to run for the house. Liberated from our temporary fear we were screaming at the top of our lungs, “Zombies! Zombies!” The plan went off without a hitch. On the way to the barn I stopped to set flame to the oil soaked wood, my dad and his brother Rob mounted their platforms with guns and extra ammo, and mom and Grandpa Jacob made sure that all of us children were up the ladder into the loft. With his help we finally got the ladder secured and then went to the loft door to watch.

Jacob pointed to the east where another column of smoke stood out against the blue sky. This meant that the Thorsons were in trouble as well and wouldn’t be sending help. Looking out towards the orchard we could clearly see that there were at least twenty zombies heading towards the house. “This situation calls for the US Calvary”, said Grandpa Jacob. He tied a rope under his arms and had me lower him to the ground in front of the barn. Once he had landed he cut the rope and made for the house. He turned, looked at the six of us huddled in the doorway, pointed the knife our way and said, “You young ‘uns stay there no matter what happens.”

The platforms worked perfectly for gunning. Both dad and Rob were armed with Winchester Model 94 saddle rifles and calmly went about taking careful aim and firing. Down the zombies went one by one as they came through the orchard and across the empty field. The plan would have worked completely if it hadn’t been for a sizable number of the undead who had somehow managed to ford the creek behind us. I screamed at my father as soon as I saw a group of about 10 come around the side of the barn. Father looked up in astonishment and cried, “I didn’t know that these demons could swim!” There were now too many of them and the shooting gallery was quickly becoming a desperate situation.

A group of 8 surrounded Uncle Rob’s perch and through some process of trial and error literally stumbled upon the steps which led forward. Rob fired, cocked the lever, and fired again and again. For what seemed an eternity he repeated this process until the last of them dropped nearly at his feet. Dad took but a moment to look at his younger brother so cool under fire , a look of love and admiration, and then father’s eyes looked at the bloody sleeve of his shirt. Uncle Rob looked down and although he was trying to speak, no words would come. “John, John, I’ve been bitten. I can see the marks on my arm!”

“Take me John. Don’t let me become one of them.” It was only later that father was able to relate that they had made a pact one night as they discussed the stories they had read in the paper but had not shared with the children. These were the stories of families watching in horror as their loved ones turned into the undead. They promised each other that if one were bitten the other would end their misery before they changed.

“John, do it John! I beg you!” I looked up to see the tears streaming down my father’s face. We had never seen him cry so this disturbed us greatly. My father cried and was now full of rage as he jammed shells back into his empty gun. He raised the rifle to his shoulder and only hesitated for a split second before firing the shot which left its mark on Rob’s forehead. I swear to you that as he fell I saw a smile on his face.

The zombies continued to come. I had lost count. My mind was whirling. All of the stories which I had heard from the newspaper were just that, stories that happened to others. This was happening to my family and I understood quite clearly that we might not survive the day. In that instant I heard mother scream. My little sister Kate had left her doll on the steps of the house and as mother watched in horror Kate leaped, as only a nine year old can do, from the loft into the wagon which was loaded high with hay. This was part of a game we’d play, but clearly this wasn’t the time to jump the wagon even if the purpose was to rescue her favorite doll. I clearly remember mother screaming for her husband to do something, and I saw the confusion and fear on my father’s face as he realized how helpless we all were.

Without giving it any thought I found myself sliding down the rope that Jacob had used when we lowered him to the ground. In mere seconds I covered the distance to where my sister now stood. She was protecting her doll, I was protecting her, and the yard, it seemed, was covered with zombies. I saw no way out. I cradled little Kate in my arms, asked god’s forgiveness for my sins and awaited the end.

What happened still seems unreal. My father was furiously firing, first taking down one and then another of the fiends in the area directly around me, and then he ran out of shells.

Several of the undead continued to move in my direction. Abruptly I heard grandfather Jacob bellow, “I thought I told you to stay in the loft!” This brought me back to some semblance of reality and I saw that we were in serious trouble. Just as abruptly Jacob Hoover was standing there in front of us with his old civil war rifle. The gun was a Springfield 58 caliber that although old looked as though it had just come from the factory. Jacob stood there in front of Katie and me placing a powder charge in the old musket. “Pffffffft” went the powder and then nothing. The old man had nerves of steel, I will say that much for him. He pulled the hammer back and primed another charge. “Pffffffffft”. Same result. Things were dire now as the closest zombie was a mere 15 feet away. “Hold your ground”, Jacob roared.

He calmly reached into the old Union army pouch which hung from his shoulder and pulled out yet another of his powder charges. I remember thinking how old these things were and no wonder they don’t work. With the zombie now closing the distance Jacob Hoover raised the rifle, shouted, “Take this you stinking corpse”, and squeezed the trigger. The gun went off with a deafening boom. As the smoke cleared I saw what was left of the head atop the shoulders of the form which was now toppling into the dust. “Got the bastard” Jacob said. By then father had reloaded and began the job of taking down even more of the monsters in the area around the barn. Then horses came into view as the McCrae family, who lived to the west arrived to help turn the tide of battle. Within 10 minutes all of the zombies were stopped, the dead once again dead and the battle was over.

We buried Uncle Rob that night out in the middle of the orchard. He loved to sit out there and enjoy the smell of the trees so dad thought it a suitable place to let him rest. We forced the horses, who wanted no parts of the undead and their stench, to drag the zombie corpses into a field of rocks where we burned them and then scattered the bones to the four corners of the earth. That was the last of the zombies that we ever saw in West Union. They say that once winter came the zombies froze, up north anyway, and the time was well spent eradicating as many as possible while the opportunity presented itself. Let me tell you about Jacob W. Hoover. He finally found the peace that alluded him all those years following the Civil War. He had finally had the opportunity to fight his battle and he performed brilliantly. Jacob also saved my life and for this I will be forever grateful. A year later, when I asked him how he wanted to be remembered he had me take this picture of him and his gun. He wrote on the back of it and instructed me that whenever I told the story of Zombie Time I should show the picture and the words he had written, Jacob W. Hoover of West Union and the Gun That Killed the Zombie.

It didn’t notice us none, bein’as it was stupefied by the Reckonin’ Plague – folks round here know alls ‘boutthe Reckonin’ Plague, if’n you need hear more ‘bout it, there’s always JimLovegood down at the livery supply, or Esau Conway over’n Eureka County,they’ll tell ya all ‘bout it, seein’ as Jim’s wife and Esau’s son both fellvictim to the scourge-a-God last month – durn shame too, as they was finecountry stock.

Anyways,that’s aside this here story I’m relatin’. We musta stared – we bein’ EustaceThompson, Jacob Hoover (and that’s Jacob W. Hoover, mind, of the West UnionHoovers, not Jacob T. Hoover, of the lyin’, cheatin’, scoundrelin’ Hooversover’n Tipper’s Junction – an, if’n you ain’t aquainted with him, this hereJacob W. Hoover is ‘bout as fine a citizen an neighbor as I’ve known in allcreation) an a’course misself, who’s narratin’ this here story. We musta staredneigh upon one half hour at that there zombie, an we watched it shamble ‘roundin the field out back a Eustace Thompson’s house, an it had that empty look inits eyes, all clouded over like they was two shooters from little CurlyChoatum’s marble set. Now this was one a them slow movin’ ones, one a the typea the original Reckonin’ Plague, not one a them gentrified runnin’ zombies fromthe city. So’s, point bein’, Eustace, Jacob, and misself could afford standin’round lookin’ at it, makin’ note of its movements an habits an inclinations,like as if we were a set a regular scientists and all. Pass that bottle ‘roundhere again, will ya? Thank ya mightily.

So’s at anyrate we watched that zombie close on thirty-thirty-five minutes, tryin’ a guesswho all it could be the zombie of. Course it’s a hard thing to do, as all y’allare prolly well aware, tryin’ a figger who they was once’n they’ve turned. Wejawed out a few possibilities an finally decided it had a be Old Doc Stubbs,seein’ as the zombie was wearin’ Old Doc’s harmonica ‘round his neck, with thatspecial neck fastener Old Doc uses – or used, supposed I should say – andtwasn’t no other explanation we could square with, than it bein’ Old Doc, causewhy else would it a been wearin’ Old Doc’s mouth organ ‘round its neck unlestit was Old Doc hisself. One more sip off this bottle an I’ll pass it ‘round toya. Got a kick to it, ain’t it? A bit a Silas Wolcott’s white lightnin’. Helpya grow up big an strong.

Well now,we can’t say twasn’t a downright shame to see Old Doc in a way he was. But weknew it was no good lettin’ him keep shamblin’ round inna state like he was,seein’ as he might go infectifyin’ others unnecessarily. A zombie ain’t likeyer skunk or yer coon or yer possum, which’ll be mighty bothersome but which’nyou can just set free out in a woods an let bygones be bygones, no sir, yerzombie’s gonna go out on a streak a eatin’ something’ terrible, even if it‘twas Old Doc Stubbs, justabout the kindest sawbones this’n parts have everknown. After all, that shambling glass-eyed creature twasn’t no Old Doc Stubbsno more, and thinkin’ that any part of Old Doc remained in the critter, therebytreatin’ it aspecial and the like, well, that’d be a plumb easy way to getoursselves good and killed, and zombified real good. So’s we decided theneighborly and Christian thing’d be to put Old Doc outta that glass-eyed miseryonce’n for all.

Just sohappened, by a stroke a luck, Jacob had his gun with him (or, as he took tocallin’ it, the “Flintlock Jezebel”), for protection and all – oh, not fromzombies necessarily (although they are a heap a trouble ‘round these parts,after that brimstone-meteor crashed down from Hebben with fire and fury out inJoshua Oldbrook’s field), but more for protection from bears, cause this alloccurred in a heart of bear attack season, when the bears a the woods justsorta get it in their minds somewhy to just start hurtin’ people. It’s adangerous world out there, I’ll tell ya that as one a the Lord’s HonestCertainties, like a Good Book says it.

Any rate,Jacob raised up his gun with his right hand, crost to his left eye, like heholds his gun a typical, on account a the right eye bein’ generally dead fromthe regrettable incident at Mrs. McCall’s Dance Social pert near ten years agonow. So’s anyways, Jacob aimed his gun, an with a few words of apology on theside to Old Doc – indicatin’ how it’s a durn unfortunate sitiation, an it’s toobad that Providence had a go an take a turn like this – well, Jacob let loosewith the full fury a the Flintlock Jezebel, an sent the zombie a Old Doc to thegates a Zion. An sure enough, we ain’t seen Old Doc ‘round these parts a sincethen. Durn shame, that. An that’s the exact story a how Jacob W. Hoover killedthat zombie, an the Devil take me if I’ve stretched or exaggerated any of itstruthful details. I’ll have that bottle once again, an I thank ya mightily.

I HAVE ONE WORD FOR LAST NIGHT'S GRIND-FU CINEMA: AWESOMECAKECAPTAINHOWDYREDRUMTASTIC

Wow. It is going to be difficult to top this year's final Grind-Fu Cinema. Shyboy Tim and I screened two amazing films (The Exorcist and The Shining), had a great crowd of movie geeks on hand and we all had cake.

I want to introduce you to Amber's fourth creation for Grind-Fu Cinema, Regan. She is entirely edible, except of course her pajamas. We even had the option of offering you extra vomit to top off your piece of cake (a shout out to Tune Town hero Carl who offered to be my vomit boy). See the vomit in action below!

Regan was a labor of love to our Shuffle Function Cake Decorator Extraordinaire, Amber. She works with me at Hilltop Hy-Vee, but is currently finishing up her degree in North Dakota. For the second year in a row she made the trek back to Mankato to make our Grind-Fu Cinema cake, and Shyboy Tim and I can't begin to thank her enough for her time and efforts!

Amber is pretty shy, but after we got her a disguise, she agreed to let us document the progress of her work. The following pictures illustrate the step by step process - and we had to leave Amber to work her magic before she began applying the color and details, but we also wanted the finished product to be a surprise.

The cake begins to take shape.

Amber called this the monkey stage. That is her chin rounded out on the bottom, her round chipmunk cheeks and two holes where her eye sockets will be.

The cake gets it's first layer of icing as the real Regan watches. Note the container of vomit in the top left hand corner.

The facial features are added - the flesh colored nose, eyebrows, etc. are made of fondant.

Another feature that this cake had was Regan's spinning head. Watch the video above to see what I mean. After watching The Exorcist, we spent our intermission devouring the cake. When all was said and done there were maybe four pieces of cake left. It is such a treat to ask movie goers if they want to eat an eye or if they would prefer some hair!

Shelley did the cake, and Carl dished out the extra vomit.

We had a fantastic turnout!

Shyboy Tim will have some more pictures to add of the melee later on, but I wanted to share mine right away this morning. The final Grind-Fu Cinema of 2011 is coming up soon, and we'd like to warn you up front that the movies are pretty freakin' scary. You see, the final Grind-Fu is always our love letter to Halloween, so we go out of our way to find films that will make your skin crawl and the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end. Last year we showed Suspiria, and we probably had 10 people walk out because the film was just too intense, and after the second movie of the night (Se7en) I was pretty sure we had broken some people.

This year we're showing two landmark films. The first one has been called (arguably) the scariest film ever made, and the second film is the only horror genre film that Stanley Kubrick ever made. Starting at seven p.m., Grind-Fu Cinema presents THE EXORCIST. Entertainment Weekly thinks that The Exorcist is the scariest film ever made, but when a guy like Billy Graham says "there is a power of evil in the film, in the fabric of the film itself"... well, you gotta go see that movie! Truthfully, this is one scarifying film. Bring a change of pants.

The second film is THE SHINING, directed by Stanley Kubrick and based on the novel by Stephen King. Already we've got the all star credentials going. Throw in Jack Nicholson as a writer slowly going nuts, and you've got yourself one intense psychological thriller. Like I always say, if you see a Kubrick film you automatically get 50% more Simpsons references, so don't miss it!

Also... THERE'S CAKE! We always have cake at Grind-Fu for intermission, and not just your typical sheet cake. No sir. We get hardcore cake architecture going on. Amber, our cake craftsperson, drives all the way from North Dakota just to design and assemble these delicious masterpieces. The following photos are of previous Grind-Fu cakes:

A great big thanks to our usual polka suspects Ambroe and Maude. And another thanks to our new polka pal Charlie! We had a lot of fun playing two hours of Minnesota's party music, and the response from our listeners with their pledges was amazing. Last year we made $500 during Polka Til You Puke, and this year we more than doubled it with $1,130 pledge dollars!! Thanks to you too Radio Heroes!! Somewhere in this endless pile of music, books, culture, and trash is Shelley's vast collection of K-Tel records! It is no small effort to find them, number them, and then wheel them out for their date with destiny, but that's exactly what is happening on Thursday, October 27th. when we play...

SHUFFLE FUNCTION RADIO ROULETTE!

What is Shuffle Function Radio Roulette? It's when we draw numbers, flip coins, and roll dice to determine a playlist drawn randomly from the previously mentioned K-Tel collection. The albums, numbering near 500 total, are a MINEFIELD of bygone hits, one hit wonders, no hit wonders, french country music, canadian Elvis impersonators, angels, devils, and regrets. It's from these records that we are forced by the radio gods to assemble our playlist.

HOW DOES THAT WORK?

IT SOUNDS COMPLICATED!

Actually, it's pretty straight forward. We draw numbers from a real live magic hat to determine which record gets selected. Then we flip a coin to determine whether or not we play Side A or Side B (it's all vinyl, folks!), and then we roll a ten sided die from Shyboy Tim's Magic Bag Of Holding to determine what track we play. EVERY SONG IS RANDOMLY CHOSEN! There is nothing more horrifying for the Shuffle Function gang than leaving a playlist up to chance, but that's exactly why we play this game around Halloween. It can either be the greatest hour of radio EVER, or an hour that makes you want to never listen again.

Don't panic. USUALLY it turns out pretty good.

Wednesday morning we went out and made our offerings to the radio gods, and we have to believe that they would love what we've given them. It was almost entirely Halloween related, and if there's one thing radio gods love more than messing with playlists, it's trick-or-treating.

Listen on THURSDAY, OCTOBER 27th @ SIX P.M. and find out if the radio gods are down with the offerings. With any luck, we won't be crawling out of the studio afterwards. It's been known to happen.

There are a number of familiar faces in this show, and some of my favorite comedians to boot. This BBC show is sooooooo good that it hurts. Your jaw will drop, it's as simple as that. ONE WEEK TO HALLOWEEN FOLKS

This is when things start to get crazy in Shuffle Function land folks. We have Radio Roulette coming up on Thursday night at 6 p.m. and Polka Til You Puke on Friday morning's show. Saturday night is Grind - Fu Cinema and on Halloween we have Lux Interior's Purple Knif Radio Cramps show. And on top of all that the KMSU Fall Pledge Drive starts this Wednesday!! We hope to have a blog post on the Fall Pledge Drive Swag tomorrow - so be sure to come back for that.

I want to keep this post a little short today due to my lack of free time, but the subject matter is an essential for all zombie aficionados. Filmed in 1967 on a shoestring budget and with all of his friends pitching in to help, George Romero introduced us all to the world of zombies with NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD. This is a great film to visit again and again, so why not give it a view right now?!

Did you know that you can download a free app that let's you watch the film in it's entirety on your ipod or ipad? This movie is everywhere, and for good reason. It is the template of every zombie film that has followed and one of my favorites. Enjoy!!

EIGHT DAYS TO GO!!

Halloween is coming up fast, and I want to remind folks about my zombie challenge I issued earlier during my countdown blog posts. I asked that you do something creative with the photograph of Jacob, and because it tis the season, I made him a zombie killer.

We have had several short stories come in, and a series of paintings as well. The sky is the limit here folks - maybe you want to write a haiku, or some flash fiction, a screenplay or sketch out a graphic story. Any and all entries are welcome. I plan on sharing the entries on the blog next weekend, so get cracking! Today is a good day to have zombies on the brain, Walking Dead is on again tonight! Last weeks season premiere was a nail bitter, and so I can't wait to see what shakes out tonight. If you didn't get to see the premiere, well here you go!

There is however a major dilema for me concerning Sunday night televison. It is zombies vs. bigfoot tonight, and while that means we are all winners, it is like freakin' Sophie's Choice around here!!

At the same time that Walking Dead airs, Animal Planet's Finding Bigfoot series is airing a special on the Patterson Film. This is the Rosetta Stone of evidence as far as the legend of bigfoot goes, and the footage has caught my fascination ever since I saw it as a child on television.

Now I am not always impressed with what I see on the Finding Bigfoot shows, in fact I rarely am, but they are going back to the actual location of where the Patterson film was shot. They plan on debunking or proving the viability of the original footage, and while I know they will basically end up saying something along the lines of "We just don't know", I can't help but be excited by tonight's subject matter. So choose wisely folks. Maybe switch hit during commercials. That is probably what I will be doing.

THIS JUST IN - FINDING BIGFOOT IS ON NEXT WEEK!!! I WILL RELIVE THIS DRAMA OVER AGAIN NEXT WEEKEND.

Yesterday's blog post featured found photographs of what look to have been an amazing Halloween party back in the early 60's. What I am about to share with you isn't necessarily a Halloween party, in fact it occurs in the middle of the winter, but boy oh boy would it make for an excellent Halloween tradition.

In parts of Austria and Bavaria the folkspeople still believe in the Goddess Pertcha, who is believed to be the keeper of beasts and evil spirits. This pagan tradition of Pertcha lives on today, as young men dress up in Pertchan masks and parade through their towns to frighten away the evil spirits that accompany the Goddess.

The creatures that they make look like they come straight from a Hollywood Studio - and your nightmares!! They are not for the faint of heart, and I could not imagine how frightening these monsters would seem to children. But like all things that frighten me, I am fascinated with this Pagan Tradition as well.

If I win the lottery, you can be sure that I will make a point of attending a Pertcha Festival. I would also make a point of bringing along quite a few adult diapers as well.

This kind of thing makes a zombie pub crawl look like a church cake walk!! If you still need a costume idea - I suggest you become a Pertcha beast. You will also help frighten away all the evil spirits around you.

COUNTDOWN TO HALLOWEEN BLOG POST # 19

Tonight I would like to write a little bit about a subject that came up on the morning show today, something we called THE STANLEY KUBRICK FONT. If you have been a frequent listener of the show, then you know that Shyboy Tim and I can go on and on about fonts. Tim is the guy that went to school for this kind of thing, but I have always been an avid fan too.

Now before I start blowing your minds, I should probably ask - Do you know what I am talking about when I say the word "fonts"? Don't be embarrassed if you don't, that's where I can help you out. Pretty soon you will be chatting up Helvetica, Lucida and Magneto with the best of them Gatsby!! I am not going to get too technical here, but it is perhaps easiest to think of the word typeface when you think of fonts. Coming to us all the way from wikipedia, a font is traditionally defined as a quantity of sorts composing a complete character set of a single size and style of a particular typeface. In laymen armchair terms that would probably anger the purists in the group - it is what the letters and words "look" like.

Since we are screening The Shining as part of Grind-Fu Cinema, this is the perfect time to do a little geeking out about some of the details we see on the screen, and the STANLEY KUBRICK FONT is front and center in the movie. It is used to great effect throughout the film as a tool to show the passage of time, and is just brilliant in the opening sequence of the film. Have a look at the opening below in the clip (while flipping out over that font, just think how awesome it is going to be seeing this on the big screen at Grind-Fu Cinema!)

Kubrick's favorite font is officially given the name FUTURA EXTRA BOLD. He too was in love with fonts, and his films give that away. This font was invented by Paul Renner in 1927. There are a number of variations on the Futura theme, as the picture below illustrates, but it will look very familiar to those of you have seen a Kubrick film or two.

I found out about Futura Extra Bold in an amazing article written by Jon Ronson, whom I first heard of after reading his book The Men Who Stare At Goats (which was made into a great film). In his article for The Guardian he talks about his brush with Mr. Kubrick before he'd passed away and is subsequent visits to Kubrick's home which consists of a large main house surrounded by a number of out buildings. Those buildings are filled completely with boxes that comprise Kubrick's archives. He has visited these boxes and foraged through their contents and explains some of his findings in his amazing article. You can read it here, and I heartily suggest you do.

I know that after reading that article, I simply have to find a few books to study about Kubrick, so this is your official heads up Shuffle Functioneers, okay. Sometime in the future I will start talking a lot about his films and his eccentricities to the point where even Shyboy Tim is tired of hearing it (remember my months of 70's movies after reading Easy Riders and Raging Bulls?) I'm not going to apologize, I can't help myself. All right, time to hit the hay and dream about fonts.................see you in the morning.
